Boerdery ‘pla niemand’
Man wat onwettig met varke boer, kwel nabygeleë besighede Madli Grobbelaar DIE onwettige varkboerdery op grond wat vermoedelik aan die Harmony-myn behoort, dryf sakeondernemings in Almaweg tot raserny. Ongeveer ’n maand gelede is die onwettige boerdery onder Vista se aandag gebring. Aangrensend aan die boerdery is twee restaurante, ’n kwekery, twee veeartspraktyke en die Welkomse Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV). Die Matjhabeng-elektrisiteitsafdeling en paneelkloppers is ook daar geleë. Met navrae aan die Harmony-goudmyn het Hendrika Ninham, woordvoerder, gesê dat die myn besig is om ondersoek in te stel en dat hulle sal terugvoer gee sodra die ondersoek afgehandel is. Vista het die eienaar van die varkboerdery, ene Mashego, gekontak en by die boerdery ontmoet. Hy het bevestig dat hy al jare lank in die omgewing boer, sonder die nodige munisipale of myntoestemming. Mashego het bevestig dat die ondernemings in die omgewing van sy boerdery bewus is en dat hy al kontak met van hulle gehad het. Hy sê die myn het hom van hul grond verwyder. Volgens hom is dié varkboerdery eers op die Harmony-goudmyn se grond bedryf, maar ná afset het hy na die munisipale grond verskuif. Die myngrond en die munisipale grond word met ’n smal dienspad geskei, sê hy. Mashego is daarvan oortuig dat sy boerdery niemand in die omgewing pla nie en dat hy alle gesondheidsvereistes nakom. Die DBV van Welkom het ook die saak ondersoek en daar is bevind dat die varke wel gesond is. Daar is geen tekens dat die diere honger ly of sieklik is nie. Volgens Kingsley Nkala, Welkomse DBV-inspekteur, is die droë bene met vet aan en die karkasse wat in ’n sloot daar naby lê, vir hom ’n bekommernis. “Mashego moet egter sy varkhokke skoonmaak. Dit is baie vuil,” het Nkala gesê. Hy het ook gesê dit is nie die DBV se verantwoordelikheid om oor die wettigheid van die boerdery te besin nie en dat die DBV na dieregesondheid omsien. By Vista se besoek is bevind dat die varke net oorskotbene, wat die eienaar van ’n stortingsterrein bekom, eet. Mashego voel egter dat sy boerdery nie ’n veiligheid- of ’n gesondheidsrisiko inhou nie.

DIE onwettige varkboerdery op die vermoedelike myngrond. “My plaas is higiënies en my varke is gesond,” het Mashego gesê. Hy reken hy oortree geen reëls nie en dat die boere wie se beeste in die woonbuurte wei, groter veiligheid- en gesondheidsrisiko’s inhou. Volgens die Matjhabeng-ordonnansies is die skape, bokke en beeste wat in die woonbuurte rondloop, onwettig. Die beeste het al verskeie motorongelukke veroorsaak. Hoewel daar nie werklik ’n reuk in die lug is nie, kan die ondernemings die varke met tye ruik. Twee van die ondernemings aangrensend aan dié boerdery bedryf restaurante en die eienaars voel dié onwettige boerdery gaan hul kliënte wegdryf. Mashego beweer hy doen “freelance”-boerdery wat niemand in die omgewing skade doen nie. Tóg is dit ingevolge munisipale ordonnansies onwettig. Ongeveer drie weke gelede het die DBV hope vars bene en afval in ’n sloot langs

Die Matjhabeng- munisipale ordonnansie se wetstoepassingseenheid is van die probleem bewus. Met Vista se besoek was hulle teenwoordig en besig om die saak te ondersoek. Mashego het aan Vista gesê dat rou riool vanaf die myn-hostel op die myngrond anderkant die dienspad stroom. Volgens hom is die myn besig om dit reg te maak en Mashego reken dié rou riool is

‘Ondersoek vorder’ Madli Grobbelaar DIE ondersoek na ’n moord wat skokgolwe deur die Goudveld se gemeenskap gestuur het, vorder goed, sê die polisie. Kapt. Stephen Thakeng het Maandag (18/07) bevestig dat die ondersoek na die moord op die haarkapper Andrè Gebhardt (52), wat dood in sy huis in Riebeeckstad gevind is, in die laaste fase is. “Alle leidrade is deeglik deur die polisie ondersoek en opgevolg,” sê Thakeng. Goeie vordering is gemaak en die skuldiges kan moontlik binnekort aan die pen ry. Gebhardt, se pa, Dries, het op Dinsdag 14 Junie op sy seun se lyk afgekom nadat hy nie sy telefoon beantwoord het nie. Die vermoorde se hande was met toue vasgebind en daar was ’n tou om sy nek. Volgens die polisie was die kluis in die huis oopgebreek en ’n onbekende hoeveelheid kontant en ’n selfoon word vermis. Gebhardt was lewend gesien op Sondag 12 Junie.

DNA leads to conviction Marti Will A WESSELSBRON man has been found guilty on two counts of rape and sentenced to two life sentences. Semi Samuel Sekgo of Monyakeng, Wesselsbron, has been linked by means of DNA to the two cases. In the first incident in October 2013, a girl was at home when her ex-boyfriend broke into her house and gained entrance through the bedroom window. The victim was overpowered and forced to his residence, where he raped her. A 33-year-old man was arrested on 2 November 2013 by Det.WO Jolanda Hulme, but the victim withdrew the case on 4 August 2014. In the second incident, a 15-year-old
girl was walking in Monyankeng in Wesselsbron in December 2015 when a man forced her to a shack, where she was raped. The suspect was arrested after the victim had identified him. Sekgo was linked by DNA to both rapes. The two cases were investigated by Det.WO Jolanda Hulme, WO Tshepo Maleme and WO Fanie van der Merwe of the Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. “I am very proud of the team of capable investigators who ensured that a thorough investigation was conducted. This led to the successful prosecution of the rapist,” says Captain Bizzah Ntsiane, Welkom FCS commander.

DIE spoedvraat Lafras Fritz (21) het nog nie ’n spoedkaartjie met sy rolstoel gekry nie, maar wel met sy motor met die nommerplaat “Frassie”. Dié bekende Welkomiet het in 2015 met sy Lexus V8 tweede geëindig in die klas vir Suid-Afrikaanse sedanmotors. “Ek oefen nooit nie. Ek neem net deel,” sê hy ondeund. Lafras is in Augustus 2010 in ’n motorfietsongeluk op die Phakisarenbaan tussen Welkom en Odendaalsrus verlam. Sy lewe het weke lank aan ’n draadjie gehang, maar hy het herstel en glo hy kan enigiets vermag as hy probeer. Hy was vyf jaar oud toe hy aan veldfietsrenne begin deelneem het. Hoewel hy van sy tekortkominge bewus is, verkies hy om dinge self te doen. Mense beleef hom nie as gestremd nie. Lafras is nou ’n tweedejaarstudent in meganiese ingenieurswese aan die Universiteit van Pretoria. Hy geniet elke oomblik daarvan. “Alles is Engels, maar ’n mens
raak daaraan gewoond.” Hy het in 2015 gereeld spesiale terapie by ’n arbeidsterapeut in Pretoria ontvang. Hy het daar ook gereeld met ’n bioniese pak geloop. “Dit help met die bloedsomloop, maar dit het sy beperkings. Ek sal onder meer nie met so ’n pak trappe kan klim nie,” sê Lafras. “Daarby is dit baie duur. Ek sal nie eens oorweeg om so ’n pak te koop nie.” Die sentrum is sowat ’n uur se ry van sy koshuis, Olienhout, en vanjaar het hy nie gereeld vir oefening gegaan nie. “Ek fokus nou op my studie. Ek het aan myself belowe ek sal nooit ’n vak druip nie.” Lafras, wat van kleins af ’n liefde vir tegnologie gehad het, sê hy geniet dit om te ontwerp en hy wil later sy eie besigheid begin. Sy pa, Lafras, het ’n ingenieursbesigheid in Welkom se nywerheidsgebied en Lafras (jr.) het die afgelope vakansie daar gewerk om homself besig te hou. Hy konsentreer nie op die verlies van sy bene nie, maar hy glo hy sal eendag weer kan loop. “Niks is onmoontlik nie.”

Trek nou die laaste stukkie onderklere uit. Haal diep asem Z en weer uit Z en vat die handdoekreëling vas. Klim op die skaal sonder om jou hande van die reëling te verwyder Z ons gebruik dit mos vir ondersteuning om nie ons balans te verloor nie. Dit is belangrik om op dié reëling te steun. Kyk dan so tussen en oor alles deur na die skermpie op die skaal. Indien die uitsig belemmer is, probeer dan van die kant af ondertoe kyk. Indien jy steeds niks kan sien nie, los die reëling, klim af, soen jouself in die spiëel en vertel vir jouself hoe mooi en “sexy” jy is. Wat is ’n ou kilogrammetjie of twee nou tussen ons vroue?

Klein Ethan se dood nie vergeefs

Maar dié vegtertjie het ander planne gehad en minder as ’n maand ná sy geboorte het sy kort lewe mense se hart aangeraak en weet die hele land nou van dié wrede praktyk in staatshospitale. Die Barnard-egpaar het in Januarie vanjaar uitgevind Cindy is swanger. Dit sou hul derde kind wees. Toe sy nege weke swanger was, het Cindy begin bloei. ’n Dokter in die Bongani-hospitaal in Welkom het haar aangesê om elke dag ’n aspirien te drink. Op 20 Junie het sy sametrekkings gekry en die Barnards het ’n ambulans ontbied. Cindy sê sy was al 26 weke swanger, maar die hospitaalpersoneel het uit die staanspoor nooit aan haar baba as ’n mens gedink nie. Daar is na ’n dreigende miskraam verwys terwyl sy besig was om die lewe te skenk aan ’n vroeggebore baba. Ben is die aand huis toe, want hy mag volgens die hospitaal se beleid nie by Cindy gebly het nie. Sy het teen middernag nog in die wagkamer van die kraamafdeling gelê en alleen, sonder hulp, daar begin kraam. Nadat baba Ethan gebore is, het ’n suster, wat haar intussen begin versorg het, gesê: “Jy kan maar vergeet van die kind.” Dié suster het Ethan weggevat. Cindy het gedink haar kind word in ’n broeikas gesit. Sy is in die nag oorgeplaas na die hospitaalsaal vir ma’s wie se babas dood is. Cindy het geglo haar kind is dood, want dit is waarheen sy in 2013 gestoot is toe haar en Ben se eerste kind ook dood is. Cindy is gevra om ’n toestemmingsvorm te teken dat Ethan veras mag word. Die vorm moet geteken word omdat babas van minder as 1 kg as mediese afval beskou word. Ethan het 730 g geweeg. Sy het Ben gebel en gesê Ethan het dit nie oorleef nie, hy was te klein. Ben het net ná 07:00 by die hospitaal opgedaag. Die egpaar het hartseer in die hospitaal se binnehof gesit en huil oor hul baba toe ’n verpleegster na hulle kom soek het. Die

God het Ethan gestuur sodat almal kan weet wat hierdie hospitale met babas doen.” In baba Ethan se lêer was ’n aantekening dat hy aan hipotermie (verkluiming) ly. ’n Dokter in die neonatale waaksaal het hier reguit aan die egpaar gesê babas van minder as 1 kg is nie vir die hospitaal ’n voorkeursaak nie. Dit is waarom die mediese personeel vir Ethan in ’n yskoue spoelkamer gelos het om te sterf, sê Cindy. Die volgende paar dae het klein Ethan versterk. ’n Vroulike dokter het volgens die
Barnards alles moontlik gedoen om hul seuntjie te versorg. Hy het goed gevorder, maar bloedarmoede ontwikkel. Die naweek van 1 Julie was die dokter wat na Ethan omgesien het, nie aan diens nie. Ethan se toestand het begin verswak en sy lyf het styf geword. Niemand kon aan die egpaar verduidelik waarom die seuntjie se spiere styf word nie. Op Sondag 3 Julie het Ethan se toestand verder verswak. Hy is die aand oorlede, 13 dae nadat hy vir dood in ’n koue waskamer gelos is. Toe Cindy in die gang gehuil het, is glo aan Ben gesê: “Vat jou vrou huis toe, sy raas.” Die Barnards glo Ethan het nie vergeefs gesterf nie. Hulle sal nie stilbly oor wat aan hul seun gedoen is nie. In 2013 het hulle ook ’n baba in die Bongani-hospitaal verloor. Hulle glo dié baba se dood was aan nalatigheid te wyte. ’n Klag van strafbare manslag is teen die hospitaal aanhangig gemaak en die polisie het bevestig dat die saak ondersoek word.

Dié hospitaal was toe in die soeklig nadat vyf babas in ’n kort tydperk daar gesterf het. Die hospitaal het later bekend gemaak dat die babas almal bloeding op die longe gehad of baie min geweeg het. Voorkombare sterftes van babas, amputasies weens nalatigheid en sterftes van volwassenes nadat hulle vir eenvoudige mediese prosedures in die hospitaal opgeneem is, kom gereeld voor. Brendan Kretzmann, ’n plaaslike prokureur, is tans besig om regstappe namens sommige van die slagoffers te doen. Die Barnard-egpaar, wat twee babas in die hospitaal verloor het, het Maandag (18/07) gesê hulle gaan beslis regstappe teen die hospitaal doen. Talle mediaberigte, asook ’n gesprek met ’n dokter van Welkom, bevestig dat staatshospitale nie vroeggebore babas wat baie klein is as ’n voorkeursaak beskou nie. Sulke babas sterf dikwels binne ’n uur ná geboorte. Omdat die babas dikwels breinskade opdoen, doen staatshospitale geen moeite om hulle te probeer red nie. Dieselfde dokter het aan Vista gesê vroeggebore babas wat onder 1 kg weeg, word al baie jare nie as ’n voorkeursaak beskou nie. Heelwat nuwe metodes om vroeggebore babas beter te versorg, is ontwikkel. Vel-op-vel-kontak waar die baba teen ’n volwassene se lyf gehou word, word deesdae met groot sukses toegepas. Die kontak help glo om die baba se hartklop, asemhaling en bloeddruk te stabiliseer. Vroeggebore babas word ook in plastiek toegemaak. ’n Kaapstadse dokter was bereid om die Barnard-egpaar met die plastiek en ’n seelmasjien te help, maar die hospitaal het dit geweier. Die Bongani-hospitaal het enige raad of hulp uit die private mediese omgewing van die hand gewys, sê Ben Barnard.

Alleged rapist wanted THE Virginia police are looking for a man who raped a 45-yearold woman from Virginia in the presence of her young son. On 17 June, the unknown man allegedly gained entrance to the woman’s home at around 05:00. The complainant stated that she had still been in bed with her son when she heard the bedroom door opening. It was then that she realised that a man was in her home. After a brief struggle, the man overpowered her and pointed a knife at her chest. He then raped her in the presence of her child. The child covered himself with blankets and the attacker ordered him to go to sleep. When he had finished raping her, he demanded money from her. “The alleged rapist then had taken two cellphones before he left. The victim managed to lock herself in another room. “During the investigation, we were able to ascertain that the man had entered the house by forcing open one of the windows. The victim could not give a clear description of the suspect, but said he is a black
Crash claims woman Marti Will AN elderly woman was killed and a 52-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy were seriously injured when an out-of-control vehicle struck a fence in a built-up area. The 75-year-old woman died on the scene. This unacceptable incident took place in Dichocolateng, Thabong, on Friday (15/07) at about 17:15. It is alleged that the 13-year-old boy was playing in the yard just before the incident. The two women were passing the house in the street, on their way home from Orange Groove where they had just visited a family member. At that moment, a white Colt bakkie lost control and hit the 52-year-old woman. The 75-year-old woman was dragged through the fence, said Sgt. Mamello Mokhuoane of the Thabong Cluster.

The driver of the Colt bakkie tried to flee the scene. He was, however, caught by angry community members who brutally assaulted him. The driver of the bakkie and the two surviving victims, the 52-year-old woman and the 13-year-old boy, were rushed to hospitals in Welkom. The 75-year-old woman was found underneath the bakkie. She was declared dead at the scene. The deceased was identified as Agnes Molelekeng Seleke. The 52-year-old woman was identified as Palesa Mosia. The name of the 13-year-old boy cannot be made public, as he is a minor, said Mokhuoane. The driver, who is in hospital under police custody, could not produce a driver’s licence. A case of culpable homicide was registered for further investigation.

Odendaalsrus sal ook twee hiervan kry en die oorblywende een gaan na Hennenman. Die doel van die karikikariki’s is om bystand aan die groot vullisvragmotors te verleen. Vullis wat deur die voertuigies opgelaai word, sal by die munisipale depot afgelaai word. Die groot vullisvragmotors sal die vullis dan na die naaste munisipale stortingsterrein neem. Let dus op na die kleurryke kariki-kariki’s wat in die woonbuurte en strate van Matjhabeng te sien sal wees.

67 Minutes for Mande Mandela Day
Do their part on Mandela Day THE Goldfields Casino staff took part in the third annual Madiba 67 Minute Walk for Charity that was held in the parking area of the Goldfields Casino. The casino was the main contributor towards the event, which was held in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Goldfields Sunset in partnership with the Matjhabeng Municipality.
THE Choppies chain store made a donation to the House of Hope in Welkom for their 67 minutes for Mandela Day. The children received 40 balls and were treated with cake. The grownups of Choppies are from the left Mosele Motingwe, Jonathan Turner, Tsholofelo Botlholo, Alta Harris and Magda lene Mokhoadi. The children are from the House of Hope.
THE Rotary Club of Goldfields Sunset in partnership with the Matjhabeng Municipality, successfully hosted the third annual ‘Madiba 67 Minute Walk for Charity, with an incredible 700 en tries. This fun walk is fast becoming ve ry popular within the community and Rotary believes it is going to grow year by year, especially from 2017, as the Ma diba Walk would then also include a 10 km registered race for committed athletes. It hopes to attract athletes from all over South Africa. Goldfields MultiSport joined hands with Rotary this year and says it will continue to do so in the years to come and will also provide all the roadside marshals. Sun set Rotary has thanked all participants for supporting this charitable event and says it will ensure that all the food that has been collected will go to needy families within the community and that the Welkom SPCA will receive all the pet food that has been donated. The organisers say this event would not have been possible without the sponsors. “An event like this cannot ta ke place without you, and a special mention to the Goldfields Casino as the main contributor to the event,” says Dulcie Harris organiser of the event. The group hel ped to uplift the spirits of the inmates and the correctional officers. They donated disposable nappies and other baby necessities and also clothes to children who have been born in pri son. The guild would like to acknowledge orga nisations from the entire Circuit 605 for taking part. These include the Women’s Manyano, the Young Women’s Manyano, the Youth (GUiLD) and the Women’s Fellowship.

Sonskynvrou in lokval gelei Alet van der Walt WELKOM se geliefde en bekende liefdadigheidsvrou, Alet Viljoen, is verlede week deur kinders uit haar huis in Bedelia gelok terwyl mans met knopkieries haar agter haar tuinmuur ingewag het. Viljoen, van die Sonskyn-projek wat al jare lank behoeftiges help, het Vrydagmiddag (15/07) ’n noue ontkoming gehad. Sy sê sy was in die etensuur in haar huis besig om vetkoek te bak toe twee kinders by haar hek na haar roep. Sy het haar huishulp uitgestuur, maar dié het teruggekom en gesê die kinders wil haar sien. Viljoen het ná ’n ruk uitgegaan en
gevra wat hulle wil hê. Die een kind het aangehou na sy keel wys. Viljoen het tot by die hek in haar oprit gestap. Die volgende oomblik het haar buurman, wat verkies om anoniem te bly, in die straat gestop en vir haar geskree om in die huis in te gaan. Ses mans, sommige met knopkieries en met komberse om hulle gedraai, het agter Viljoen se tuinmuur opgespring. Die buurman het hulle met sy voertuig ’n ent gejaag, maar hulle het in die straat af gehardloop en verdwyn. Die twee kinders was volgens Viljoen tussen ses en agt jaar oud en besonder goed geklee.
Sy sê God het haar gehelp en haar buurman op die regte tydstip gestuur om haar te red. Viljoen is al 29 jaar lank betrokke by liefdadigheidswerk en versorg ongeveer 100 gesinne met altesaam 400 mense. Benewens haar voorsiening van kospakkies en klere help sy ook jaarliks behoeftige matriekleerlinge met klere vir hul matriekafskeidsgeleentheid. Sy bied ook elke jaar ’n Kersboom aan en verleen op talle maniere hulp en emosionele bystand aan behoeftiges. Viljoen is voorheen al benoem as Shoprite/Checkers se Vrou van die Jaar.

WELKOM has been selected as a destination for the extended tour and the Aussie Circus’s white, yellow and purple tent village will be set up for shows opposite the Goldfields Mall parking entrance from Friday, 29 July, until Sunday, 7 August. The Australian Circus Spectacular has been making waves all over South Africa. Its previous stops in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and East London have been so successful that the show’s organisers, Weber Bros Entertainment, have decided to stick around for the rest of the year, after which the current line-up moves off to Asia on its international tour. Offering a night of escapism and positivity, the show has gained a devoted following across the country, with one family even travelling 400 km in one evening from the Karoo to Port Elizabeth just to see the spectacle. The show blends cirque artistry and acrobatics on the ground and in the air with slapstick comedy, illusion and extreme stunts including FMX jumps beneath the big top circus tent, as well as the splitting Globe of Death (a spherical cage in which four riders encircle each other and perform precarious tricks), and one of the world’s only surviving human cannonball acts, fired right over the heads of the audience.
Now it is elkom time for We to come and d say “G’day” and “how’s itt going?” to the Aussies. It is not often that the city plays host to a big international production like this, but Sebastian Cassie, executive producer, believes regional centres like Welkom are a circus’s “bread and butter”. “We included Welkom in our tour because we knew there would be a hunger for our kind of show. We think that there will be a particular interest in the high-octane motorbike acts that are our specialty,” says Cassie. The Aussie Circus will be in Welkom for a one-week show season only, with options for morning, afternoon and evening shows from 29 July to 7 August. The tent will be heated to protect you and your loved ones from the last of winter’s bite. Tickets are R200 to R400 for adults and R150 to R350 for children younger than 14 years old and groups of ten or more booking together. Infants seated on a parent’s lap do not require a ticket. Excel in modelling MPHO BOTHA participated in the prenationals this past weekend (16/07) at the International Arts Showca se in Sandton, Johannes burg. The competition is open to all models, sin gers, dancers and actors to show off their talents in front of international scout Kim Myers who comes from Orlando, Florida. This is in order for the artists to go to America next year to showcase their ta lents in front of big production houses, record labels and modelling agencies such as Walt Disney, BET, ABC, Bravo, So ny and next model management, just to name a few. Mpho was chosen to show his talent to Myers later this year. He was chosen for singing and modelling.

Collecting titles THE TLB Singing School’s Elite competition team rounded up 15 firstplace titles during the second term. They had a goal to achieve ten firstplace titles by the end of the year and they are already five over their target with only half the year behind them. The students received competition trai ning from Arina Bosch and Tyrell Bazley and are wellaccom modated by the St Helena Primary School and the Riebeeck stad Primary School. The singers are are clearly visible in their unique red Elite jackets and have been wellsupported by the public. They hope to achieve more titles in the third term as well as display their talents in the Ernest Oppenhei mer Theatre on 30 September with the rest of the TLB Sin ging School students. Dit is die vierde jaar wat die broer en suster Charles (16) en Kaylee Martin (14) die kompetisie aanbied. Hulle sê met dié kompetisie wil hulle iets in die gemeenskap terugploeg. Die kompetisie word op 6 Augustus by die Laerskool Merriespruit gehou en klein
en groot is welkom om deel te neem. Daar sal verskillende kategorieë wees. Charles en Kaylee doen veral ’n beroep op modelle én ontluikende modelle om hulle in te skryf. Hulle is albei leerlinge aan die Hoërskool Hentie Cilliers in die dorp. Die twee tieners vra ook die publiek om hul hart oop te maak en te help met tweedehandse klere, nie-bederfbare kos en toiletware, asook honde- en katkos vir vierpotige vriende in nood. Racing (in) memories THE Historic Tour V11 held at the Phakisa Race Course can be regarded as an important chapter in the book of the history of Motorsport in the Free State. Saturday (16/07) was a day of action in which cars from the 50’s took part. In the Historic Single Seaters Class, 23 cars competed. A total of 25 cars competed in the Lotus Challenge, 13 cars in
the Formula Ford Kent Class, 17 cars in the SKF Pre 66 Legends Productons Cars/Little Giants and SKF Pre and 66 in the Sports and GT cars/Little Giants ISP. There were many great drivers from the area, as well as some epic battles on the old Goldfields Raceway. Probably the Free State’s greatest exponent was the late Tony Viana, who dominated both
the Group 1 and the Wesbank Modified racing Z first in Mazdas, then driving for Mitsubishi, Fiat and finally becoming BMW’s number one. Do not forget there were many others Z the likes of the late Nols Nieman come to mind. Who can ever forget the Schekter/Van der Merwe carveup that sent Sarel’s Sapphire to destruction?

Bradford sadly passed away in December 2015 and his father fulfilled his wishes with the current chairman of Striders, Deon Lodder.
