RESIDENTS from Welkom, Thabong and Bronville are in dire straits after the Bongani Hospital implemented a new policy on the admittance of priority two patients. According to a source in the Health Department, patients from these areas were being sent around between the three state hospitals in the Goldfields to get treatment. Welkom, with close to 300 000 residents, have always been served by the Bongani

matter is under discussion within the Lejweleputswa District management teams. The department regrets that patients had to suffer. “A clear instruction was issued that priority two and three patients should be seen and treated and only then be referred to district hospitals. “The department hopes that the management teams of Bongani, the district hospitals and EMS will quickly find amicable ways of patient treatment and smooth referral systems without compromising the rights and comfort of patients. “The department apologises to all who experienced less than worthy service during this period,” said Mvambi.

said they could not admit him without a referral letter from Bongani. After close to three hours of waiting, the man was sent back to the Bongani Hospital where he was admitted. The man, who suffers from a heart condition, was by then looking very weak and confused. Nursing staff said they were very concerned about this development as it was only a matter of time before somebody will die. Priority two patients are people who are chronically ill, like heart patients and diabetics. Patients in this catagory can very quickly become priority one patients if not looked after.
