Cracking down on zamas

Brand verwoes fabriek

New unit established Marti Will HIGH levels of illegal mining and associated crimes in the Welkom area, which include murder, has led to the establishment of the Mine Crime Combatting Forum (MCCF). Last week Wednesday (17/08), three illegal miners were shot dead execution style at the President Steyn No. 2 shaft. On Friday (19/08) 70 illegal miners were arrested at the Eland Shaft in Welkom. “The murders, which involve illegal miners, are a real concern for the Welkom police. To this end, the Provincial Task Team (Tactical Response Team), Crime Intelligence and Visible Policing personnel are being engaged to curb crimes involving illegal mining. The police cannot combat these crimes alone. “We need information which will lead to the arrest of these barbaric killers. We will leave no stone unturned until all the perpetrators have been brought to book,” says the Welkom Cluster commander, Maj. Genl. Apaphia Modise. An intense manhunt has been launched to find the murderers who shot the three zama-zamas. On Wednesday, mine security and the police found several cartridges at the scene. The murdered men were shot in the head. People with information about the murders are asked to contact Det. WO Elliot Khutsoane of the Welkom detective services on 057-391-6259 (office hours) or

083-9401-743. On Friday (19/08), 70 illegal miners were arrested after they were found allegedly escaping methane gas at the Eland Shaft in Welkom. Mine security informed the Welkom Police. “On our arrival at the scene, 70 illegal miners were arrested,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the Welkom Cluster. The suspects are from Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The illegal miners have been charged with attempted theft of gold-bearing material, trespassing and transgression of the Immigration Law. “Illegal mining is a concern and the arrests are regarded as a breakthrough. They will face the might of the law,” says Thakeng. In another incident, the bodies of illegal miners were recently retrieved from the Bambanani Mine near Welkom. The deceased were mostly from Thaba Tseka in Lesotho. The next of kin travelled from Lesotho to identify the deceased, says Thakeng. ) The 70 illegal miners arrested in Welkom on Friday appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday (22/08). The case was postponed until 8, 9 and 14 September for bail application. They all remain in custody. These illegal miners are from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. They are facing charges which include attempted theft of gold bearing material, trespassing and illegal immigration.
