SEVERAL Free State cyclists of the South African Police Service (SAPS) participated in a stop-and-search operation conducted from 10:00 on Wednesday, 24 August. They concentrated on the most problematic areas, such as Dagbreek, Bedelia and Bok Street, as well as the shopping centres around Welkom. The members used their initiative and their own bicycles to conduct the operation to help in combatting criminal activities around the city. During the operation they searched 116 people and four motor vehicles. The public response was very positive and people appreciated the
effort of the cyclists. The operation will be conducted frequently in different station areas. The police members who took part in the operation were Lt.Col Ronel Bailey, WO Gustav Thompson, WO Past. Frans Vermaak, WO Basie Ferreira, WO Peter Muller and Sgt Jurgen Opperman. Maj.Genl Apaphia Modise, cluster commander of Welkom, expressed her appreciation to the members who had participated in the operation. Modise said that these kinds of operations would have a huge impact in assisting in the reduction of crime in Welkom.

ONE of Welkom’s legendary figures, Aubrey Nyschens, has died at the age of 94. He passed away on Sunday evening (28/08) at the Welkom Mediclinic. He would have celebrated his 95th birthday on 29 January 2017. The name Aubrey Nyschens was synonymous with the evolving business world of Welkom. Nyschens sat on many seats and wore many hats in the 66 years he was part of Welkom’s history. Nyschens was one of the last surviving original pioneering men of the Goldfields. He walked the walk and talked the talk in virtually every sphere of the ever-changing landscape of a golden city. He came to Welkom in 1950 at the age of 28 to be Welkom’s very first chief health inspector, a position which he filled for 18 years. He arrived on the dusty streets of this remote outpost when the pioneering engineers were literally setting up Welkom. He spent his first six weeks in the Uitsig Camp, living in a wooden hut. He then moved to Nyala House and worked in the mine hostels for six months before moving to his first home in Cactus Street, Doorn, and then to the second one in Tana Street.
