MATJHABENG stuur op ’n besoedelingsramp af indien iets nie daadwerklik gedoen word om storting van rou riool in rivere en damme stop te sit nie. Twee van die rioolaanlegte is heeltemal buite werking en die ander staan op wankelrige bene. Rou riool stroom vrylik in onder meer die Sandrivier op Virginia en Klippan in Welkom. Dit hou ’n ernstige besoedelingsprobleem vir veral boere in. Johan Terblanche, voorsitter van AfriForum in Matjhabeng, sê die suiweringwerk by Teronia is geheel en al gevandaliseer en rou riool vloei vrylik langs die Welkom-Theunissen-pad, waarna dit na Wolwepan loop en dan in boere se boorgate beland. Vista verneem miljoene rande se skade is aangerig toe Eskom die krag by die Virginia-pompstasie en Nyakallong-pompstasie weens wanbetaling afgesny het. Stefanie Janse van Rensburg van Eskom het bevestig dat die kragtoevoer afgesny was, maar weer aangeskakel is nadat die Eskomrekening betaal is. Die pompstasies ontvang elk hul eie rekening. Volgens Terblanché doen AfriForum alles in sy vermoë om die probleem hok te slaan. By die Virginia-rioolwerk is kabels gesteel en by Thabong is die rioolaanleg buite werking. Tot dusver het AfriForum geen terugvoering van die departement van water en sanitasie gekry nie. Volgens Terblanché vloei die onbehandelde riool by Odendaalsrus al vir jare na verdampingspanne omdat die rioolverwerkingsaanlegte buite werking is. By Witpan word sedert Desember herstelwerk aan die rioolaanleg gedoen. Dié herstelwerk behoort teen einde Oktober klaar te wees. Net sowat 12 m3 sal glo verwerk kan word en nié 27 m3 waarvoor aanvanklik beplan is nie. David Ross, parlementêre verteenwoordiger van die DA, sê die besoedelingsramp in die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit hou verband met die finansiële wanbestuur. “Welkom se DA het op 21 April ’n besluit ondersteun om die grondwetlike ingryping van die tesourie te ondersteun.”

So said Executive Mayor Nkosinjani Speelman during a meeting with local business people last week. “Local business people will benefit more in my term of office. I want people who will produce quality, and not pathetic work. I need to see white and black women getting more work from this municipality,” said Speelman. “I believe that if work is given to locals our money will circulate more in Matjhabeng. This will boost the economy of the municipality.” Speelman added that no business person must pay kickbacks to get work, or payments, from the municipality. “Corruption has no room under my leadership. You must immediately report any person asking for a bribe or a kickback, to myself and the police. I will not tolerate such acts under my watch. I want companies to produce quality, enjoy their profits and pay tax,” he said. Speelman invited all businesses who have instituted legal action against the municipality, to come to his office for remedial action. “My door is open for all issues which affect local businesses, including legal matters. I want to try and resolve these matters outside of court,” he said. Speelman emphasised that he is the mayor of all who live in Matjhabeng – black, Indian, coloured and white. “I carry a mandate from the ANC to create local millionaires during my term of office. Believe me you will get business, but in the right manner”. He also told business people that they must be paid no later than thirty days after submitting verified invoices. He told the Project Management Unit (PMU) officials that there will be no money taken back by National Treasury because it was not spent. Speelman warned municipal officials to stop getting companies and people from outside to do work here, when there are qualified locals who can perform better. “I am a humble person who listens to everyone, but I hate to be undermined and will not tolerate any nonsense,” said Speelman.

’n STROOM water wat dag en nag na Witpan vloei. Ross gaan volgende Vrydag (23/09) die finansiële state van Matjhabeng en Nala met die ouditeur-generaal in Kaapstad bespreek. Hy het op 22 September ’n afspraak met die nasionale tesourie vir ’n inspeksie van die disfunksionele riool-suiweringswerk. Hy het reeds die minister van water en sanitasie, Nomvula Mokonyane, gevra vir dringende ingryping in die water- en rioolkrisis in Matjhabeng. Ross sê ’n waterraad behoort aangestel te word om die rioolkrisis in Matjhabeng te hanteer. André Styger, woordvoerder van die DA in Matjhabeng, sê slegs twee van die rioolplase is permanent buite werking (Witpan en Teronia). “Die pompstasies word wel aan die gang gehou, maar elke keer as daar iets fout gaan, druk die riool in die woongebied op en vloei vir dae en soms weke aaneen oor na die panne, damme en riviere.” Hy sê die strafregtelike klag wat in 2009 deur Terblanché ingedien is, is in 2016 sonder sukses afgesluit. Die hoofrede is omdat die klagtes oor verskeie munisipale bestuurders se termyne gestrek het en dit
moeilik was om te bepaal wie presies nalatig was. Die hoofoorsaak is onvoldoende en onopgeleide personeel wat die stasies beman en beveilig, asook die toekenning van herstelwerktenders aan onbekwame kontrakteurs. ’n Voorbeeld hiervan is die WitpanTeronia-rioolaanlegte wat in ’n stadium vir slegs R1,5 miljoen herstel kon word, maar waaraan intussen na raming meer as R100 miljoen bestee is. Dié aanlegte is steeds buite werking. Sedert 2014 is ’n strafregtelike klag van die DA teen die munisipaliteit hangend vir besoedeling weens die riool-probleme in Odendaalsrus en spesifiek weens die toestand in die Frankstraat-Weblaanomgewing. “Sodra die munisipale bestuurder, adv. Muthusi Lepheana, se verklaring gereed is, sal dit hopelik op verhoor kan gaan. “Dit is te betwyfel of hierdie strafregtelike klag die probleem vir die inwoners van Odendaalsrus en die groter Matjhabeng gaan oplos, maar alle beskikbare weë moet gebruik word om druk toe pas op die raad totdat Matjhabeng se rioolkrisis die aandag kry wat dit verdien.”

DIE Spesialiteit-sekuriteitgroep van Welkom het op ’n wenk gereageer en plofstof wat vermoedelik ondergrond gebruik word, in Odendaalsrus gevind. Dinsdag omstreeks 10:00 is die groep in kennis gestel dat daar plofstof in ’n oop veld by Goudriflaan, Hospitaalpark, Odendaalsrus lê. Twee lede van die groep het hul dadelik na die toneel gehaas en die gebied beveilig. Die plofstofeenheid in Welkom is
ontbied en die plofstof is onskadelik gemaak en is versigtig van die toneel verwyder. Dit is kommerwekkend om sulke gevaarlike plofstof in ’n gewone woonbuurt te vind waar inwoners niksvermoedend voortgaan met hul dagtake. Die spesifieke stuk veld word deur baie voetgangers gebruik en dit is baie gevaarlik. Danksy die flinke optrede van die groep, wat uit verskeie nooddienste bestaan, is die gebied beveilig en niemand is beseer nie.

Budding entrepreneurs awarded THE Welkom High School is the overall winner in the 2016 Eskom Simama Ranta Awards. According to a press release, this annual entrepreneurship education competition is aimed at identifying and celebrating secondary schools successfully implementing entrepreneurship education. All intermediate and secondary schools in South Africa are eligible for the competition To qualify, schools must have enterprise clubs which teach learners the basics of running a business through practical application, while responding to their respective communities’ socio-economic needs. Welkom High School’s WHS Yes Club has been in operation since April 2016. The members produce various decorating and other useful things such as candle holders. The creative club mainly uses papier-mâché to make the products. They also produce bags from old T-shirts, phone charger holders from two-litre bottles, as well as book covers from old worn jeans. To raise funds, this highly motivated group of
youngsters host cake sales at their school, and easily make around R800 in a day. For their efforts and for taking top honours in this year’s competition, the Welkom High School learners received a cash prize of R100 000 for their club. They fought off some stiff competition from the other 27 finalists from across South Africa. A winner was named from each province and each received a prize of R50 000 for their club. The deputy president of the WHS Yes Club, Nombulelo Ntakakazi (gr. 11), says they did not expect to win due to the tough competition they faced. This ambitious young woman says being a future job creator is one goal that all her club members share. “I’m a believer in the saying ‘If you don’t build your dreams, someone else will hire you to build theirs’. We are looking forward to expanding further and reaching out to more learners in our school and getting them interested in entrepreneurship. Our prize money is going towards

Of jy sien op Facebook die slegte nuus van ’n vriendin se suster wat met kanker gediagnoseer is en nou in die hospitaal lê met eindelose vrae en sekerlik ook vrees. Jy is dankbaar dat daar ’n God is met wie jy kan praat en vir wie jy kan vra vir genesing. Jy ry verby die vrou wat jy elke dag flink met haar handsak en kossakkie werk toe sien stap en jy voel skuldig dat sy loop en jy ry. Die motor se wiele draai in die straat af en jy kan die kruis langs die pad met ’n oorledene se naam daarop nie miskyk nie. Jy skiet ’n dankgebed op na Bo dat jy nie

Aan al hierdie dinge dink jy terwyl jy rustig werk toe ry, om dan wreed uit jou gedagtes na die die werklikheid teruggeruk te word deur ’n dowwe plofgeluid teen jou voorruit. En dan sê jy dankie tog, want jy wil nie eens dink waar daardie voël-blerts te lande sou kom as dit nie vir die voorruit was nie.
VANOGGEND het nostalgie my totaal en al oorweldig. Ek het in my biblioteek van boeke, tydskrifte en koerante rondgekrap om te kyk waarvan ek ontslae kan raak. Ek kom toe af op ’n boekie – ’n baie kosbare boekie – van die geskiedenis van ons “Lady”, die Ernest Oppenheimer-hospitaal. Dié hospitaal was in ’n stadium een van die grootste hospitale in die suidelike halfrond. Die boek is in 1951, toe die hospitaal deur nonne en plaaslike dokters bestuur is, geskryf. Hierdie goed toegeruste hospitaal, met van die duurste en beste toerusting in die wêreld, het sedertdien gesluit. Dit is nou twee jaar ná die sluiting en ek het besluit om net weer te gaan loer hoe die geliefde “Lady” nou lyk. Groot was my skok oor die toneel waarop ek afgekom het. Hartseer het my oorweldig. Die hospitaal was bekend vir haar pragtige, goedversorgde, kleurryke en beeldskone tuine. In die somer was dit ’n lushof en ’n groot aantreklikheid vir pasiënte en besoekers. Vandag is dit vervalle en verwaarloos. Dit is hartverskeurend. Die Goudveld se mediese dienste is in die moeilikheid. Ons staatshospitale kan net uiters kritieke gevalle hanteer. Baie pasiënte sterf weens swak dienslewering. Is daar nie ’n moontlikheid dat die Ernest Oppenheimer-hospitaal weer kan funksioneer nie? Dit sal ’n groot verligting vir ons mediese dienste en vir ons gemeenskap beteken. Baie van die personeel van hierdie hospitaal is hoogs gekwalifiseerd en hul dienste kan gebruik word. Dit is so hartseer om te sien hoe bejaardes en kindertjies weggewys word by staatshospitale in die Goudveld. Kan die regering nie indringend ingryp nie? Dit is werklik ’n kritieke noodsaaklikheid. Premier Ace Magashule, ons sien op na jou vir die lewering van goeie diens op verskillende terreine en veral noodsaaklike dienste. Ons belastingbetalers verdien beslis wêreldgehalte-kliëntediens. Doen asseblief wat jy as premier moet doen.

I have spoken to various traffic officers about the dangerous matter. The stop sign at Craib Avenue is also being misused by drivers. What is the traffic department going to do about these problems? Arrest due to Verkragter vyf maande later steeds op vrye voet stolen goods A BURUNDI citizen has been arrested when she was found in possession of stolen items and counterfeit cigarettes. On Saturday (10/09) at about 19:00, members of the Welkom Public Order Policing Task Team received a tip-off about suspected stolen items that were off-loaded at a house in Dagbreek, Welkom. The suspect, a 28-year-old woman from Burundi, was arrested. She appeared in the Welkom Magistrates Court on Monday (12/09). The case was postponed for a bail application until Monday (19/09). Harmony Gold en White Rivers Exploration (WRE) het aangekondig dat hulle ’n groot goudafsetting reg langs Harmony se Targetmyn in die Goudveld ontdek het. Die afsetting is tussen 1,1 km en 2,2 km ondergronds en dek ’n gebied van sowat 9,5 km². ’n Onafhanklike studie om die omvang te probeer bepaal, het bevind dat die afsetting 11,5 miljoen onse hoëgraadgoud bevat, volgens ’n verklaring deur WRE. Die groep verwag dat die beoogde myn ’n leeftyd van tot 30 jaar kan hê teen ’n produksiekoers van tussen 250 000 onse en 300 000 onse goud per jaar. Die twee myngroepe het in 2014 ’n
gesamentlike onderneming gestig met die doel om potensiële goudreserwes aan die grense van Harmony se bestaande myne in die Goudveld te vind. WRE besit ’n 65%-belang in die gesamentlike onderneming en Harmony Gold die orige 35%. Volgens Neil Warburton van WRE bevestig dié vonds dat die twee maatskappye “op een van die wêreld se grootste ongemynde hoëgraad-goudbronne sit”, met reuse-potensiaal vir verdere ontwikkeling. Hoewel die afsettings baie ver onder die grond is, glo Warburton deur Target se bestaande infrastruktuur, insluitend die bestaande skagte te benut, kan die nuwe mynprojek vinnig in produksie gestel word. THE Explorers restaurant at the Goldfields Casino has a trendy upper-market new look. The first classic cigar-bar launch has been replaced with a more modern and lighter interior. The menu was adjusted to include a variety of light meals for lunches. The kitchen has a new but well-experienced chef, Errol Mogashoa, who is responsible for the new lunch menu. Mogashoa was part of the Casino group, but he recently joined the Goldfields Casino in Welkom. Entertainment and fun evenings are planned and they invite everybody to join them for the last weekend of the month.

FRANS HLOI will compete in the World Championships in Italy on 15 October.
Frans on his way to Italy Madli Grobbelaar FRANS HLOI, a bodybuilder from Welkom, has again qualified to compete at the World Championships that will be held in Italy on 15 October. Hloi has participated in a variety of competitions since 2008 and recently won the 2016 IBFF National Championship that was held in Roodepoort. He started training in 2006 at Tswelelang in Wolmaransstad – in the beginning “just for fun”. But since 2008 he started competing in local development bodybuilding shows and in 2009 in the provincial and national competitions. He went to Austria in 2011 for the WBBF World Championships and received a fourth place. In 2012 Hloi won at the WBBF Provincial championships and was the overall winner in Bloemfontein. During 2013 he won a first place at the IFBB Provincial Championships and at WPF Provincial Championships he was the overall winner. At the 2013 WPF World Championships in Italy he received a first place. In 2014 he was the overall winner of the NABBA Provincial Championship. During 2015 he received a third place at the WPF Provincial Championship and at the WPF National Championships in Johannesburg he won a second place and in the same year a third place at the WPF World Championships in Italy. Hloi has also excelled this year with a third place at the IBFF Provincial Championship and a first place at the NABBA Provincial Championship where he was also the overall winner. Hloi says to attend the World Championships is to acquire knowledge and to share his experiences with his fellow bodybuilders. He hopes to present free bodybuilding workshops and coaching clinics to raise the standards of bodybuilding in the country.

WELKOM is in the heart of South Africa and has, surprisingly enough, got more to offer than most people think. “One thing we do lack is a decent art exhibition, even though our area boasts many well-known artists,” said Mari Strydom, a local artist. To this end a unique and exciting exhibition, The ArtBeat of Central South Africa, is planned at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre in Welkom from 24 to 29 October. “The Art-Beat of Central South Africa Exhibition is a fairly new concept, which we would like to see become a well-known annual exhibition, that will attract artists and art lovers alike, from all over South Africa, to this unique City of Circles,” said Strydom. The exhibition will be held in the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre, an architectural artwork, which is unique in itself. The theatre with its yellow wood- and stone-slatefloor foyers, two huge hand-woven tapestries designed by the
well-known Capetonian, Elanore Esmondè White, and two smaller tapestries designed by Cecil Skotnes, create a beautiful backdrop for an unusual art exhibition. Many different art forms will be exhibited throughout the theatre foyers, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, passages and the stage. The Monday and the Tuesday will be set aside for preparations, and Tuesday evening the exhibition will officially open during a welcoming cocktail party, held in the main foyer. Every evening between 18:00 and 19:00 there will be a sundowner’s concert in the auditorium, show-casing local performers. Dulcie Harris, theatre manager, encourages local artists to exhibit their work at this unique art exhibition. “Let’s get the heart for art beating in Central South Africa,” said Harris.
