Tourism boost for town

Huge project planned Marti Will A SIGNIFICANT tourism project, which will incorporate a museum, an arts and crafts incubator, a facility that will recycle old furniture and antiques, a restaurant and coffee shop and bird watching along the Sand River, is in the pipe-line for Virginia. The project, which is still in the planning phase, will be on the Linabo Farm Virginia 751. This farm is on the R73, a road between Harmony Way and the N1 leading to Winburg. The proposed project forms part of the Sand River Route which has been adopted by council. The project will unfold in stages. Elements of the project will be the conversion of the Old Post Office into a museum, an arts and crafts incubator. Old furniture and antiques will be recycled here. A restaurant and coffee shop form part of the envisaged attraction, as well as bird watching along the river. There is a rich historical culture incorporated into aspects of the farm. The first railway siding and remnants of the bridge (1893) are located on the property. The graves of black women and children, who died in the Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) in concentration camps, are found on the farm property. The first Post Office in

Virginia was built in 1894 and named the Virginia Siding Post Office. Louis Seymour, the engineer responsible for the building of the bridge, scratched his home town’s name, Virginia, on a corner stone of the railway bridge. This is where the town Virginia got its name from. Seymour was killed in the Anglo Boer War on this farm. His memorial stone was removed from the farm and placed in the Kroonstad War Memorial Cemetery. On 20 September, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Tourism Division organised a cleaning campaign in Virginia. This campaign is affiliated with the provincial event, I Love Free State Cleaning Campaign to ensure cleanliness of tourism attractions, create responsible tourism awareness and to protect and conserve the natural environment. This event served as an awareness campaign for the proposed tourism project on the Linabo Farm Virginia 751. “This project is meant to be a success, based on the relationship between the community (Sand River Tourism Association), the government (Matjhabeng Local Municipality) and the private sector (IA Carriers),” says Lebogang Kobue, Directorate: LED, Planning and Human Settlements of Matjhabeng.

Zamas dealt a heavy blow Marti Will SINCE March this year joint operations have given the illegal mining trade in the Goldfields a solid blow, with 1 405 zama-zamas being arrested. On Saturday (24/09) an additional 16 zama-zamas (12 Zimbabweans and 4 Lesotho nationals) were arrested for trespassing, attempted theft of gold-bearing material and illegal immigration. The arrests were done at Harmony’s Eland Shaft in Welkom. The 16 suspects appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday (26/09). The case was postponed until Monday (03/10) for bail application. Since March, 60 cases of Inquest has been registered with regards to illegal miners who died underground. The deceased are mostly from Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The zama-zamas who are found

guilty, receive sentences which range from three months to three years in jail with options of fines from R1 500 up to R20 000. When these sentenced illegal miners cannot afford to pay options of fine, they serve their sentences in jail and face deportation to their respective countries. Apart from being charged with illegal immigration and attempted theft of gold-bearing material, charges they also face include street mining, conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of food or items suspected to be meant for illegal miners underground. The confiscated products amount to millions of rand. “Currently our police stores are full of these items seized in our joint operations between mine security, Home Affairs and the Matjhabeng Municipality,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Welkom Police Cluster.

“We will continue with joint operations and Crime Intelligence has already been tasked to track down “kingpins” (bosses) who recruit these people from their neighbouring countries like Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe under the pretence that they will be given employment. We are winning the war on illegal mining,” says Thakeng. Last week, 22 zama-zamas were arrested. They were expected to reappear on Tuesday (26/09) for bail application. “We would like to discourage people from getting involved in illicit mining, because they will be arrested. A lot of people are dying underground. Since March this year, 60 zamas have died. “We would like to applaud residents of the Goldfields for information they give to us that mostly lead to quite a number of these arrests and the seizure of zama-zama food,” says Thakeng.
