IN yet another family tragedy, a healthy pregnant mother and her baby died several hours after being admitted to the Bongani Hospital. The 38-year-old Olga Chambise was admitted to the Bongani Hospital on Thursday (29/09) around 23:50 to give birth. Chambise called her father, James Chambise (both from Kutlwanong), to rush her to the Bongani Hospital when her water broke earlier the evening. They arrived at the hospital just before midnight and the father left Chambise in perfectly fine condition to give birth. The next day after work (Friday 30/09), Chambise’s husband and family went to visit her and the baby, only to find that they were not in the maternity ward. Nobody knew where they were. After a few enquiries, they found out that Chambise had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bongani. Upon arrival at the ICU, the family were informed that Chambise and her unborn baby had passed away at 06:00 on Friday (30/09), six hours after they were admitted. The family were highly upset and asked why they had not been contacted when Chambise and the baby had passed on. The hospital staff alleged that they did not have the cellphone number of Chambise’s husband, Ben Nhassenngo, even though his number was on her admission form. The family and husband saw it when they looked at the paperwork. The hospital personnel also refused the family the opportunity to see their bodies.

The family was asked to come back on Monday (03/10) to see the bodies, only after hospital management had had their meeting at 13:00 to establish the cause of death. On Tuesday (04/10), the family was called to see Dr. Ernest Moloi, the clinical hospital manager. Moloi explained to the family that the cause of death was internal bleeding and that the baby had been still-born. The hospital allege that the baby had been dead for three days by the time Cambise gave birth. The family disagrees with this. Moloi apologised to the family for the way they were treated by the hospital staff. He said the necessary disciplinary steps will be taken. This was Chambise’s fourth child and she did not have any problems with her other pregnancies. The family requested a postmortem to establish the cause of death and it will be done in Bloemfontein. “The patients are suffering and their lives are at risk. “Nobody seems to take responsibility for their actions, which leaves the community with the question of how many people must die before someone will do something,”said Rathipe Molupe, a family member. Vista received several other enquiries from the public regarding the Bongani Hospital. Vista made numerous calls to the Bongani Hospital for comments and sent two e-mails to Moloi. Nobody has responded to any of these enquiries. Vista reported on 8 September that doctors leaving the Bongani Hospital are a huge concern. At the end of October, there will only be one specialist left.
