GoldFM fills the airwaves Station now broadcasting after three years of hard work Marti Will

GOLDFM’s early morning Get Up and Go Show with Dean Ririe and Shaun Spiers is proving quite a hit on the Goldfields airwaves. The team behind the microphones are, from the left, front: Tshidi Sekhonyane (news) and Frank Jonker; back: Dean Ririe (pre senter and chairman of the board), Elriene Mattana (coopted board member) and Shaun Spiers (presenter and producer). GOLDFM 104.3 is officially on air. After three years of sweat and tears, false promises and false starts, the tenacious team behind the scene has brought their dream to life. “GoldFM is a fully functional community radio station,” says Tilla Neethling, one of the station’s directors. Community radio is a crucial part of the South African broadcasting landscape, providing diversity for listeners and much-needed skills for the commercial radio sector. “Not to mention the positive spin-off for our current economic and social economic standard in the Goldfields. Radio can and will improve this,” says Neethling. “We saw a need to initiate a revival in the broader community of the Goldfields. This revival needed to include the business community as well. We saw a need to create a positive outlook on life in the region, which has been adversely affected by a declining economy, unemployment and an exodus of residents due to job losses with the closing of the gold mines,” says Elriene Mattana, manager of Welkom Square and also representing the radio station, situated at the square. GoldFM has a managing board with nine members: Brian Emmenis, Kevin

Charlwood, Raff Moretti, Elriene Mattana, Dean Ririe (chairman), Tilda Neethling, Frank Jonker, Sydney Wigget and Christo Zietsman. They are mostly prominent and successful Goldfields business people. Zietsman is also GoldFM’s legal mean machine. GoldFM currently has 26 presenters (radio jocks) who have been sourced from every sphere of the Goldfields’ community. Public auditions were held in August and September at the Welkom Square. “GoldFM is fully representative of this community and the diversity of our presenters reflects this,” says Ririe. The station has to date not received any funding from the Media Development and Diversity Agency of South Africa (MDDA). GoldFM is a registered non-profit company and money generated by the station will be used towards it and community projects. GoldFM received its broadcasting service license and a radio frequency spectrum license from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) in October 2014. Ririe says GoldFM will broadcast in Afrikaans and in English. The programme content will be actual, community-based and community driven. “There is a gap in the broadcasting niche in the region and GoldFM will fill this,” says Ririe.

beskaafdheid” is glo oorskry.
