In ’n daad van openlike aggressie en oorlogsverklaring het ’n groep swaargewapende onwettige delwers (zama-zamas) Dinsdag (22/11) omstreeks middernag veiligheidswagte van Bidvest Protea Coin by ’n mynskag in St Helena, Welkom, met outomatiese gewere en petrolbomme aangeval. Ten tyde van dié aanval het die polisie omstreeks 23:43 geweerskote gehoor en die veiligheidswagte te hulp gesnel. Hulle was in die omgewing met ’n roetinepatrollie besig toe die aanval gebeur het. Een wag het in ’n Njala-voertuig doodgebrand en nog een is lig gewond.

’n Petrolbom is na die Njala-voertuig en ’n nabye watertenk gegooi. Die zamas het ook op ’n kragopwekker losgebrand. Dié het ook aan die brand geslaan en uitgebrand. Die waarde van die kragopwekker alleen word geraam op R700 000. Dit is vermoedelik gedoen sodat die gebied in donkerte gehul kon word. Die res van die wagte moes vir hul lewe vlug en is te voet van die toneel. Die wagte het hul vuurwapens in ’n mynpan gegooi sodat hul aanvallers dit nie kon buit nie. Nadat hulle die veiligheidswagte verdryf het, het die zamas die mynskag gebruik om toegang tot die myn te verkry. Dit is nie seker hoeveel onwettige delwers daar was nie, maar die wagte

sê dit was ’n groot groep. Die polisie het ’n bloedspoor vanaf die toneel gevolg, etlike meter in die veld in. Hulle vermoed ’n zama is swaar gewond. Niemand is in hegtenis geneem nie. Die mynskag, die nr. 3-ventilasieskag van die St Helena-myn, word al jare lank deur zamas gebruik om onwettig ondergronds te gaan. Die skag loop met ’n skuinshelling na onder en dit maak dit vir die zamas maklik om hier ondergronds te gaan. Die myn is in die proses om die skag heeltemal met verwerkte slik toe te maak. Polisielede op die toneel moes Woensdagoggend inderhaas van oral in die Goudveld kegels gaan haal om die letterlik honderde patroondoppies op die toneel te bewaar totdat forensiese

kenners opgedaag het. Die doppies is volgens kapt. Stephen Thakeng, polisiewoordvoerder, AK 47-, R 1-, R 5- en 9 mm-doppies. Ingeligte bronne op die toneel sê hulle vermoed dat ’n groep zamas met wapens ten tyde van die skietvoorval ondergronds gegaan het en nog steeds daar skuil. Marian van der Walt, ’n woordvoerder van die Harmony-myngroep, sê die myngroep en veilgheidswagte behaal ál meer sukses om onwettige delwers uit ou mynskagte te hou en mynterrein te rehabiliteer. “Die nr. 3-skag is duidelik van strategiese belang vir die onwettige delwers en ons glo dit is waarom hulle nou met meer aggressie optree om toegang te verkry,” sê Van der Walt.

Die Ernest Oppenheimer-hospitaal is Donderdag (17/11) amptelik aan RH Capital Managers oorhandig. Die eens gesogte hospitaal, en een van die grootste in die Suidelike Halfrond, was die afgelope twee jaar nie in gebruik nie. Harmony het na ’n geskikte koper vir die hospitaal gesoek en RH Capital Managers het aan die vereistes voldoen. Die eerste fase, ná die opening van die hospitaal, gaan hoofsaaklik op die kraam-, pediatrie- en hoësorgeenheid fokus. In dié fase sal 141 beddens beskikbaar gestel word, hoofsaaklik vir pasiënte wat aan ’n siekefonds behoort. Vir die tweede fase word beoog om die algehele getal beddens (695) te benut. Die tweede fase is egter nog in beplanning en die doelwit van RH Capital Managers is om aan almal mediese behandeling te bied. “Ons wil graag private en staatspasiënte huisves,” het dr. The shocked children of the late Sylvia Likomo Phumo from Thabong still cannot believe the gruesome discovery they found in their mother’s freshly dug grave. Thabo Manyaka, the deceased’s youngest son, told Vista that his mother passed away after a long illness in the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein on Saturday (19/11). Manyaka and his eldest brother, David Lintoe, was at the Thabong graveyard on Tuesday (22/11) morning to prepare their mother’s grave for her funeral this Saturday (26/11). They hired a tractor-loader-backhoe (TLB) to dig their mother’s grave next to their father’s, who had passed away in 2001. In that year, the brothers had bought a double grave for their parents. While the TLB was digging the grave, the brothers saw a plastic bag in the ground. They stopped the TLB operator when they realised that it was more than a piece of plastic. After investigation, they realised it was a body wrapped in plastic, similar to the plastic that is used at mortuaries. In the sand that the TLB dug out, they also found bones of the body. The brothers immediately contacted the security at the graveyard,

who contacted the Matjhabeng Municipality. The SAPS was also called out and it was confirmed that it was a human body. The body was removed and a docket of inquest was opened for further investigation. “Our records at the Matjhabeng

Municipality show that this site belongs to the Manyaka family. We will provide the family with a new site for both the parents. The municipality appeals to the community to assist the police with the investigation to resolve this mystery case,” said Kgojane Matutle, spokesperson.

The Matjhabeng Publicity Association has been housed at the Clock Tower for nearly 29 years without paying any service fees, with a view to carry out its core function, which is to promote the municipality and the City of Welkom. So answered Kgojane Matutle, municipal spokesperson in response to a media enquiry made two weeks ago. The publicity association (MPA) has in fact been in the tower for 29 years and seven months. “The Municipality is in the process of reviewing all contracts. Unfortunately, none of the MPA programmes are linked with the municipality, nor the Local Economic Development (LED). There is thus no value for the municipality,” he says. “In order to address this, we advise the MPA to deliberate with us whether there is value in the marriage, and how the relationship can be enhanced. “The municipality appreciates the pride the media and the community have shown in their assets. It is important to note that the copper doors are 50 years old. Serious thought went into the decision to replace them with lighter aluminum ones. They were no longer operational and often unable to lock,” says Matutle. – Marti Will

Funds cause concern Anonymous, Thabong: I am a resident of Ward 31, Thabong, and am concerned about how things are being done at one of our schools. At the Lenyora school, there had been a project that was launched to renovate the school. As residents and small business owners of Ward 31, we could have assisted with the project, but nobody informed us about it. When a member of the school governing body (SGB) was asked why nobody had been informed, he responded by saying he was not aware of the project. Even the shool principal denied having any knowledge of the project. Since then, the said SGB member had been victimised for asking questions. He has as of late not been

invited to SGB meetings. All this raises questions as to what is happening to school funds. Are they being misused? When concerned members of the community tried to raise the issue with the principal, they did not get very far, as they were told that nothing would come of their enquiries. This makes them wonder if the principal is hiding something from them. As members of the community, we are therefore appealing to the Department of Education to investigate the matter and give us, the community of Ward 31, feedback.

Irked by irregular metre readings Unsatisfied taxpayer, Riebeeckstad: Referring to the article “Municipality to turn up the heat” published in Vista on 27 October 2016, I would like to respond by asking: How does our executive mayor, Nkoshinjani Speelman, intend to turn up the heat if the company appointed to take our monthly water and electricity readings do not have a fixed term with the council? They are contracted for two to three months and then you don’t see them for the next two months.

In the meantime, our council works on average assumptions if this info is not given to them. Another issue is the statement scenario. How do they expect people to pay their accounts if none of the above practices are working properly? I believe that as tax payers paying for service delivery, we should be assured that our meters are read correctly and on time and that billing is done accordingly. I strongly feel that our mayor should get his house in order before he attempts to turn up the heat.

Oorkant my sit ’n jong meisie en haar ma. Haar vingertjies is vreeslik besig met die knoppies op haar pienk selfoon. “Mamma! Hier is dit! Ek weet wat Mamma makeer!” En sy gee ’n vreeslike verduideliking. My oë verskuif na Moeder. Haar gesig verkleur gryswit. Die vingertjies beweeg lustig voort. Ek

Sy sit-lê nou al in die stoel en klou krampagtig aan die leunings vas. Ek buk af na die meisie en fluister in haar oor: “Hou die advertensiebord teen die muur dop. Kort-kort flits daar ’n advertensie vir ’n baie goeie begrafnisondernemer op die skerm. Bêre daardie nommer.” “Hoekom, Tannie,” kom dit verbaas van die kindjie. “Omdat jy en dr. Google een van die mooi dae iemand in jou gesin oor die rand gaan dryf met julle diagnoses. Kyk hoe lyk jou Mammie!”

The Welkom Magistrate’s Court sentenced Tankiso Johannes Molelejane (24) to life in prison after being found guilty of raping a woman in Welkom during 2012. In the early hours of 7 December 2012, a young woman (20) was walking with her boyfriend in Nkoane road, Thabong. They were attacked by four unknown males. The boyfriend managed to flee, but the suspects assaulted the girlfriend, robbed her of two cell phones and clothes and took turns in raping her. A case of rape and robbery was registered. During January 2016, the DNA results were received and one of the suspects was linked and identified as Tankiso Molelejane, who was apprehended. Molelejane had already been convicted for another rape case. On 26 October, he was found guilty and was sentenced to life in prison for rape and 15 years for robbery. The police have called on women to avoid walking alone at night.

Local model enters Miss Mamelodi Sundowns Pageant

Local model Patricia Meintjies from Hennenman is a Miss Mamelodi Sundowns 2016 Pageant entrant. This pageant is one of the biggest pageants in the country with prizes to the value of R2 million. Patricia was also crowned the first princess in the Miss Hennenman 2015 Pageant. She is now a signed model at the modelling agency BellaDiosa Models, based in Welkom. BellaDiosa operates countrywide under the leadership of Welkom celebrity DJ Taaibos.

BellaDiosa Models is also supplying a popular celebrity TV show, Zaziwa on SABC 1, with models for studio shoots with guest celebrities. Patricia has been appointed as the new brand ambassador of BellaDiosa Models for 2017. She will make an appearance at the big 057 Pop Bottles event that will be held at the Jabu Mshengu Square, Shileka in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus, on 25 December. Patricia will appear with celebrities such as TV presenter Gift from YoTV Live

Crowned again: The 7-year-old Masego Thsidi Mabela was crowned as Little Miss Goldfields on 29 October. This was her third pageant. Previously she won Little Miss Dunamis and was the first princess at Miss Sandrivier 2016.

Celebrate 102 years A 102-year-old resident of Jerusalema Park, Leah van Schalkwyk, was ecstatic and overwhelmed when her friends and family from all over South Africa joined her to celebrate her birthday on 11 November. The facilitator of the Thabong Concerned Residents Forum, Mohau Ramakhale, says the forum wants to thank all of the sponsors and donors who made Leah van Schalkwyk’s 102nd birthday party such a joyous occassion. “We received donations of groceries, a cake, cooldrinks, meat and tinned foods. Mme Van Schalkwyk even danced for us. Her friends and family came from all over South Africa to celebrate with her. The executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Nkosinjani Speelman, has confirmed that she will get her house,” says Ramakhale. The Action Against Crime Youth Group held a fun day in aid of the Bronville youth at the Bronville Stadium on Saturday, 29 October. The group has identified 66 children to form the nucleus of their proposed feeding scheme. These children all attended the fun day and were each given packets of sweets and chips and meat parcels sponsored by a local butchery. More than ten prominent businesses sponsored this day which was the first of many to follow, says Xavier Oerson, chairperson of the group. Philanthropist gives donation Well-known Hoopstad philanthropist Dirkie Kotze of the Hoopstad Department of Correctional Services (DCS), his wife, Andri, and their daughter, Sulandri, donated clothes, food, toiletries and some school books to the President Kruger foster home in Reddersburg. This is the eighth consecutive year that they have made this donation in their private capacity. ”We have been working with the foster homes since 2008 and it remains a very emotional matter to us. My daughter has made friends with some of the foster children and it is difficult for her to say goodbye when we leave for home,” says Kotze. The Kotzes make use of donations from the community, business people in town and farmers to enable them to make these donations. He and his wife try to collect things for the children and then try and visit them twice a year. There are about 65 children in the President Kruger Foster Home. “This is our biggest annual project and also forms part of the community outreach project from the Department of Correctional Services of Hoopstad. “We as Hoopstad DCS appreciate the support that the community gives us in our outreach projects. Without these donations, it would be impossible to render this project,” says Kotze. Kotze says he wants to make an appeal to the rest of the community to reach out to the children of South Africa. Mack Rapapali wou dadelik by die ontvangsdame weet of daar ’n gimnasium by die werk is. Dít was kort nadat hy gehoor het hy is as aanbieder by Jacaranda FM aangestel. Maar dit was nie om spiere te pomp nie. Hy wou seker maak hy sou kon stort voor werk, want Mack was haweloos. Mack is die gewilde aanbieder met die energieke stem wat onlangs aangestel is om die Workzone, wat weeksoggende van 09:00 tot 12:00 uitgesaai word, te stuur. “Min mense ken die volle storie,” sê Mack. “Ek het agt maande lank in my bakkie (’n Ford Bantam) gebly. Dit was lekker koud. “Sien, ek het twee keuses gehad: Ek kon teruggaan huis toe (in Welkom) of die werk aanvaar en ’n kans kry om suksesvol te wees en vas te byt, al het ek nie verblyf of geld gehad nie. “Ek wou van kleins af by Jacaranda FM werk en het besluit om vas te byt.” Dit het alles by sy ouma, Gladys Rapapali, begin. Sy het as huiswerker in Welkom gewerk en haar werkgewer se seun, Dean Ririe, was bewus van Mack se passie. Mack het Afrikaans grootgeword by sy ouma en ma, Deborah. Hy was in Welkom op skool aan die Laerskool Dagbreek en die Welkom-Gimnasium. Ná skool het hy in die regte gaan studeer. Sy ma het egter haar werk by die Amerikaanse ambassade verloor en hy moes opskop omdat daar nie geld was nie. Dean (wat toe by OFM gewerk het) het hom gekontak en voorgestel hy kom vir opleiding. Kort daarna het Mack by die gemeenskapsradiostasie Gold FM begin werk. “Iewers in 2012 is ek en ’n vriend Johannesburg toe vir ’n rugbywedstryd tussen die Bulle en Cheetahs. Ek is ’n stoere Bul. Ons het nie geld vir kaartjies gehad nie, maar die game by Montecasino gekyk,” vertel Mack. “Toevallig was daar dié dag oudisies vir DJ’s by Jacaranda FM.” Hy het ná omtrent twee maande nog niks gehoor nie. Ziyaduma Promotions and Bokamoso Youth Club recently held a well-attended and successful community meeting at Parkeng next to the Ahanang Crèche and Setshabelo Public School in Ward 16. The aim of the meetings was to involve the youth in cultural activities. Saduma Miya, play writer, drama tutor, poet and arts promoter, appealed to parents and the community to support the youths’ dreams. Memme Kabi, MMC for Policy Development and Monitoring, and ward councillor Selinah Meli both supported and appreciated the initiative. A total of ten students from Shiloh Ministries in Welkom recently received their degrees and diplomas from the International Theological Centre during a ceremony in Welkom. One of the students, Dr Ezekiel Naong Moholo, received his Doctorate in Philosophy at this ceremony. A blooming success

Blessed with gorgeous weather, beautiful people and the sweet scent of fresh flowers at every turn, the inaugural Free State Flower Festival held in Parys on 11 and 12 November proved to be a momentous and memorable occasion, planting the seed of high standards for next year’s event. With 130 000 flowers and 600 dancers, not to mention five giant floats and loads of exciting things to see and do, the festival put the beauty of Mother Nature on centre stage. The festival has attracted a crowd of close to 50 000 people and impressed the president of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque. The festival is a joint venture between the Free State and the Autonomous Region of Madeira, aimed at stimulating flower production and exports, as well as attracting more tourists to the area. A large group of dancers from Matjhabeng took part in the festival and the Matjhabeng Portugese community was well represented. Hijacker found guilty Tefo Philemon Molea (32) from Thabong was found guilty in the Welkom Regional Court after a case of attempted murder and robbery was opened in June this year. This followed after an incident in June when Lesego Nkomo (31) stopped at the Sylvania Spar in Welkom to buy groceries and was hijacked. On 4 June, Nkomo was approached by four unknown African men when he returned to his car. They covered his head with a jacket, forced him into his car and drove off. The hijackers stopped near a circle next to Boiketlong Village, robbed Nkomo of three cell phones and R800 cash and instructed him get out of his vehicle. Nkomo was told to run away and when he did, five shots were fired in

his direction. He sustained gunshot wounds in his right thigh, left shoulder and upper body. He fell to the ground and was kicked several times to find out if he was dead. Nkomo pretended to be dead and his attackers drove away with his Toyota Tazz. He crawled and walked to the residents of Boiketlong Village to seek help. The ambulance and Welkom SAPS were informed and he was admitted to hospital. A case of attempted murder and robbery was opened. The following day, 5 June, his vehicle was found abandoned at the Saaiplaas Mine in Welkom. The case was handed over to the Welkom Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit for investigation.

A young woman was robbed while she was walking next to the Welkom Business Machines. On 24 October at approximately 13:30, a 24-year-old woman was walking next to Welkom Business Machines in Stateway when two African males approached her. They threatened her with a knife and demanded cash and took her Blackberry Z10 cellphone. A case of robbery was opened and an identikit of the one

suspect was compiled. The suspect is light in complexion, 1,8 m tall, of medium build, with short black hair and a tattoo on his right arm and upper cheek. He was wearing a white shirt and khaki pants. The second suspect is dark in complexion, 1,6 m tall and slender. He was wearing a white shirt and brown cap. Both suspects might be between the ages of 18 and 25. No one has been arrested. Retired commissioner MW Ngobeni visited the members of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Thabong Cluster recently. The purpose of the visit was to raise awareness about the Elderly Care Fund. The benefits of the fund for retired members were explained and the investment techniques were highlighted. The members present were those who are approaching retirement age

and those who have already retired who reside in the SAPS Thabong Cluster precincts. Ngobeni encouraged members to invest their money wisely and he invited members to approach him when there were uncertainties. He further handed over a winner’s cheque of R1 000 to Det.WO Leonie Pothas of the Welkom SAPS Detectives. Ngobeni said Pothas was an active contributor to the fund and her name had been selected in a lucky draw at head office, which won her the prize.

Police request information The police in Welkom are looking for victims who have been robbed at taverns in and around Welkom. In a spate of robbery cases, robbers used the same modus operandi, attacking vulnerable people when they came from taverns. After a thorough investigation conducted by the police, two suspects (aged 27 and 31 years) were arrested in the Welkom Central Business District (CBD) for these robberies. The complainant in the most recent incident, on Friday, 28 October, alleged that he had been waiting in front of Mario’s Tavern when a group of un-

known men approached him. They searched him and took his wallet, with R400 inside, his bank cards and two cellphones. A case of common robbery was registered, and the police arrested two men in the Welkom CBD. Several similar robbery cases have been reported, and it is suspected that the same men who were arrested might be the culprits in most of these cases. The police are appealing to anyone who was robbed in this way to contact Det.Sgt Tsie Matlokotsi of the Welkom Detective Services on 057-391-6240 during office hours.

Three men, Mfaniseni Richman Sikhosana (33), Simon Mahoko Bonokoane (28) and Solomon Makitomi (27), appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday (07/11) for the murder of Tefo Molelekoa. According to eyewitness statements, Molelekoa was chased by men armed with knives in the early hours of Sunday, 23 October. Molelekoa was wounded, and ran to the nearby Berlin Tavern at Moshongoville, Thabong, where he collapsed. The suspects fled the scene.

The Thabong police and emergency services were called to the scene by bystanders and paramedics certified Molelekoa as deceased. A case of murder was registered for further investigation. The motive for the killing is unknown. During preliminary investigation, eyewitnesses gave a description of the suspects, as they were known to them. The three were arrested at one of the taverns in Moshongoville. The case was postponed for bail application.

On Wednesday, 16 November, the task team led by Sgt Theo Phuthumo were informed that there were zama-zamas occupying a house and that there might be illegal activities taking place. The police followed up on the information and found two men inside the house. The police members explained the purpose of their visit and the house occupants gave permission for a search, during which the police found several items. Boxes of tablets believed to be antiretrovirals, bottles of cough mixture, painkillers, ointments and other medicine were found.

The police also found a big plasma screen TV, speakers, an amplifier, a DVD player, a computer monitor and solar panels.

It is suspected that the medicine was meant to be taken underground to illegal miners. The items, estimated at

Crossing over to being a full-time artist demands dedication, patience, passion and ten times more hard work. Nkoali Eausibius Nawa, a Thabong artist, has spread his wings to practice art in the big city and knows all about that. “I have been working to the best of my abilities to make sure everything falls into place, because everything I do, I have a family to consider,” he says. “My first big shift was when I moved from being a full-time artist to being a teacher of the arts. This was a difficult shift, but the shift from teaching back to the arts was even harder. “The art markets have changed and have advanced with the times. I have had to patiently adapt and get used to the market. This has put a lot of strain on us as a family, because some household responsibilities couldn’t be met and notwithstanding the fact, bills had to be paid,” says Nkoali. He says the lack of a market for his art in Welkom forced him to reconsider his position. He decided to leave Welkom and move back to Cape Town. “I am now starting to find my feet, but it has not been easy. “I am one of the artists selected in Cape Town to be part of the Nando’s Artists Society. The works produced in this project are going to be displayed in Nando’s restaurants internationally.” “The economic situation in Welkom makes people’s life hard. Buying basic food is a struggle. People are seen in numbers mostly at the end of the months or fortnights. My current works denote the shopping time in Welkom,” he says. In 2015, Nkoali, an internationally acclaimed artist, returned to his roots in dusty Thabong to teach youngsters

his passion. At the time, he told Vista that his aim was to mould and train promising young artists. Nkoali has taught art at schools and training facilities all over South Africa. His preferred mediums are oils, charcoal and multi-media and he has created beautiful sculptures using resin and clay. His favourite subject is people. His artwork focuses on normal ordinary people going about their everyday lives. Nkoali was born in Thabong, where he received his schooling. He matriculated in 1985. In 1986, Nkoali started working at

the Saaiplaas Mine and in 1990 he left the mines to pursue his dream of art. Nkoali completed his National Diploma in Fine Arts from the Central University of Technolgy (CUT) in the Free State in 1997 and his BTech in Fine Arts in 2000. His paintings have been sold in leading galleries all over South Africa. His works have also featured in galleries in Sweden, the United Kingdom, France and America and they are contained in private and public collections in South Africa and America. Nkoali is married to Likeledi and they have three children, Nomtandaso (24), Tando (17) and Sebosiso (9).

Fun walk for all at mall The Real Lions Athletics Club and the Boitumelo Mall will present the Boitumelo Junction Mall 3 km Fun Walk. The walk will take place on Saturday (26/11), starting at 07:00. The fun run will take the form of a relay and end with a fun aerobics session to unwind after the running. The first 50 male athletes and the first 50 female athletes will each receive Cansa medals. Each entrant will also receive a Cansa squeeze bottle when they register. “The athletes who have completed the fun run and who are waiting for the team members to finish their leg of the race, can then take part in the fun aerobic session,” says Sam Ditshoane of Real Lions. The entry fee is R20 per person and teams will comprise five people. “The aim of the fun walk is to create awareness around the Real Lions Athletics Club, one of the Goldfields’

oldest athletics clubs, ” says Eva Majoro, manager of Boitumelo Mall. The funds generated by the fun run will go towards promoting the athletes of the Real Lions Athletics Club, said Majoro. Cansa T-shirts will be available for sale at R70 each, on the day of the fun walk. The T-shirts can also be bought prior to the race at the Cansa offices, 188 Long Road, Welkom. Cansa information will be supplied at the Cansa stall at the race. Registration has already opened. Participants can register at the Boitumelo Mall information desk between 14:00 and 17:00. There is no age restriction for the fun run, and it is an ideal opportunity for the whole family to have fun. The prestigious SuperSport Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year Awards for Vista newspaper in Welkom was held on Friday (18/11) at the Goldfields Casino Conference Room. Two promising young sports stars, Keschia Scorgie and Jaydene Stevens, were chosen from ten finalists to take the first and second places. The guest speakers for the day were Protea netball player Annari van der Poel and Runaldi de Beer from SpecSavers, who has a diploma in sports vision. Van der Poel’s main message was about remembering why we play sport. She asked a question: “Would you rather always lose, or never play the game?” Van der Poel, a teacher at GoudveldHoërskool in Welkom, inspired the young athletes with a positive message: “While you are playing sport, especially at school, work through disappointments, work hard to succeed, stay humble, build friendships and never give up.” SpecSavers, the main sponsor of the event, came on board by sponsoring

She is a talented sportswoman on many levels. She is the quintessential all-rounder, having excelled in hockey, squash, judo and athletics

(cross country). She has excelled in her various sporting codes on provincial, national and international level. With judo and squash, Scorgie attained national excellence, going on to achieve international distinction in judo. In squash, she came fourth in South Africa and captained her school team and the Free State u.19A team.

In judo, she came third in South Africa. She also came third at the Africa Championship and third at the Commonwealth Championship. Scorgie embodies the ultimate multitalented sport star. Her motto is: “Just because you took longer than others, doesn’t mean you failed.” Jaydene Stevens (18), a gr. 12 pupil at the High School Hentie Cilliers, Virginia, grabbed second place. This young woman is currently training under Sensei Gordon Stevens and has a black belt (second dan) in karate. She has a lot of achievements for 2016, some of which include receiving two gold medals in kata and kumite at the Northern Free State Karate Championship. Thereafter, she took part in the Karate Winter Challenge and received a gold medal for kata and silver for kumite. She also competed at the South African Karate Championship and obtained a bronze medal in kumite. Furthermore, Stevens received her Protea colours and will take part in the World Karate Championship that will be held in 2018. Jaydene’s motto is: ”If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.”
