Two arrested for common assault at shopping centre Two men were arrested by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) after engaging in a street brawl with security staff at Welkom Square on Saturday (04/02) afternoon. The conflict began when members of the security staff asked the men to move away from the Welkom Square centre, where one of them was raising funds for his bachelor party. The man did not have permission to be collecting money. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, communications officer for the Welkom police, has confirmed the incident, which occurred on Saturday at about 13:15.
“Two men were asking for donations for a bachelor party,” says Thakeng. “The centre’s security guards approached them and told them they were not allowed to collect money at the centre. “This is when they allegedly attacked the security guards.” A case of common assault was registered against the brothers, aged 28 and 30. Carel and Jacobus Fouche appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday (06/02) on charges of common assault, says Thakeng. Elrienne Mattana, manager of the Welkom Square, says the behaviour of the

two men was totally unacceptable. “This is private property. We allow no fundraising to be done without prior permission. “The security guards were just doing their jobs. One of the guards was admitted to hospital to be treated for his injuries. “The security company will be doing its own investigation into this matter,” says Mattana. She says the owner of Welkom Square has condemned the barbaric manner in which the assault took place on private property, and compromised the safety of the patrons at the shopping centre.
