At a media briefing on Monday (13/02) the executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Nkosinjani Speelman, revealed shocking facts which he discovered during the 104-day programme of service delivery. The programme, Operation Kena Fela, was completed on 20 January. “There is a lot of damage control to be done and hard work lies ahead. The community must give me their full cooperation regarding any illegal activities in the Matjhabeng Municipality. I have an open door policy,” says Speelman. Speelman has promised to address road and electricity issues in Welkom. “I will catch the electricity thieves. This includes big businesses and I will issue title deeds to the needy. The pay or cut rule will apply to everybody. I will bring back the image of our municipality and the diginty of the people of Matjhabeng,” says Speelman. Speelman will be addressing broken street lights, broken water meters, properties where there are no water meters or where water meters are being bypassed. The 104 days kicked off in September 2016 when Speelman addressed all municipal workers to explain what he expects from them. He warned municipal employees that he will tighten the strings. Speelman had requested departmental managers to take him to different projects to give feedback about tender processes. Speelman issued 712 title deeds to people in need in Matjhabeng. Last year he encouraged the matriculants of 2016 to sign pledges as part of the programme. The Matjhabeng municipality also assisted students with bursaries and assisted those who were not able to pay their studies.

Crime in Matjhabeng is rife, says Speelman. He met with the police to embark on campaigns against crime, including the illegal mining problem. He dismissed municipal and security officials who were caught stealing copper. During a recent community intervention, Speelman discovered a business paying rates and taxes to a company in Durban, a tavern which had been built over the water meter, shop owners sleeping in their shops and people slaughtering cattle in their shops and selling the unhygienic meat to the community, amongst other irregularities. In Virginia he found a fully operational motor mechanic shop operating with illegal electricity and water. At one stage Speelman decided to telephone the municipality, pretending to be a community member. He reported water leaks and broken street lights. “None of these problems have yet been repaired,” he says. Speelman is especially disgusted by the sex workers operating all over Matjhabeng, as well as the multitude of drug dealers openly plying their trade. “Drugs are a huge issue in our community, destroying our community. I am frustrated that Matjhabeng is a filthy mess with cattle grazing all over the place, there is a out of control prostitution problem and a huge drug problem,” says Speelman.

Keelvol vir stilte oor perke Antoinette Schoeman, Riebeeckstad: Nou het ons genoeg gehad! Ons is keelvol en wil nou antwoorde en reaksie hê. Ek glo en vertrou regtig dat hierdie klagte nou dringend hanteer sal word en dat daar ernstig daarop gereageer sal word. Die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit is veronderstel om die twee rolbalperke van die Riebeeckstad-rolbalklub te onderhou. Tog word daar nou al jare lank niks gedoen nie. Ons lede moet self inspring en ’n werker huur om die perke te sny. Ek wonder net hoe word die mense betaal wat veronderstel is om elke dag aan die perke te werk? Ons is ’n baie klein klub met bejaarde lede en rolbal is hul lewe en stokperdjie. Asseblief, Matjhabeng-bestuur, gryp in en doen iets vir ons wat deur ’n sport soos rolbal ’n verskil in mense se lewe probeer maak. Die premier van die Vrystaat word nou dringend versoek om iets aan hierdie saak te doen. Ons het nie meer geld om mense te huur om die perke en die omgewing te onderhou nie. Kom ons asseblief tegemoet – ons wil graag sien dat ons klub se ledetal weer groei. Dit is werklik hartseer om te sien hoe ons klub agteruitgaan en dit net omdat die munisipaliteit nie sy ooreenkoms nakom nie. Maak asseblief ’n verskil en tree dringend op.

Engo Family Care in Welkom is a non-governmental organisation which endeavours to alleviate need and bring hope by means of professional services based on actions of love and mercy to persons and communities in distress. “We currently have a foster care caseload of some 450 files. In accordance with the norms and standards of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, monitoring and evaluation of these files should be done on a quarterly basis, using the Circle of Courage,” says Michelle Brown of Engo, Welkom. The Circle of Courage is a strengthbased and developmental approach aimed at building and fostering a sense of self-worth in individuals. Engo Family Care in Welkom receives partial funding from the Department of Social Development to implement these programmes. “But the funding is insufficient to pay for the printing and stationery to implement the abovementioned programme,” says Brown. She says Engo needs R4 950 to implement this programme. “Engo is requesting anyone interested in contributing towards the Circle of Courage programme to contact me on 057-352-6381 during office hours,” says Brown. Die geld word terug geploeg om kankerpasiënte in die gemeenskap te help en te versorg. Hospice is a non-profit organisation which delivers home-based palliative care, free of charge. “We rely on donations from businesses and individuals to render a service. Without the NLC funding, Hospice would have great difficulty in serving the community of the Goldfields. Three artists from Virginia, Isaac Lethetsa, Josephine Setai and Mathapelo Malgas, joined their creativity and established Botle Ba Africa Arts and Crafts. The three combine wood, mirrors, “molda tree”, varnish and acrylic paint to create beautiful art items. They make picture frames, decorated tables and frames with art inside. Botle Ba Africa Arts and Crafts invites unemployed people to join them in creating art at 26 Eland Street, Virginia. Die Suid-Afrikaanse Rugbyunie (Saru) het twee Griffonrugbyspelers genooi om aan ’n o.18-oefenkamp in Kaapstad deel te neem. Hulle is Ruben Liebenberg van die Goudveld-Hoërskool en Qamani, of te wel Andrew Kota, van die Welkom-Gimnasium. Altesaam 30 spelers van al nege provinsies is genooi om van 24 tot 26 Februarie by dié oefenkamp te wys wat in hulle steek. Slegs 12 spelers sal ná die kamp gekies word om aan die internasionale sewestoernooi in Windhoek deel te neem. Die Suid-Afrikaanse span sal op 1 Maart bekend gemaak word. Die toernooi in Windhoek word op 3 en 4 Maart gehou.
