Electrical short circuit the suspected cause of explosion inside home Madli Grobbelaar madli.grobbelaar@volksblad.com
A blazing inferno, which is suspected to have been the result of an electrical short circuit, has destroyed a house in Doorn. On Friday (19/05) just after 17:00 Boniwe Jonas (64), the owner of the house at 2 Oribi Street, Doorn, Welkom, heard a loud noise. Initially she thought that the
geyser outside the house had exploded. When she went to investigate, however, she saw smoke coming from the roof. Jonas suspects the loud bang she heard had been caused by an electrical short circuit in the roof of the house. This presumably caused a fire in one of the rooms. The chief fire officer of the Matjhabeng Municipality, Freddy Khuze, says they received a call about the fire in
Oribi Street at 17:20. The fire department was on the scene at 17:27. “The roofing had already collapsed and most of the house was going up in flames when we arrived,” says Khuze. The fire was extinguished at around 20:30 and the situation had been brought under control with the help of other emergency services. At the time of the fire, Jonas was in the house with her one
daughter, three grandchildren and four visitors. It was impossible for the family and visitors to rescue any items from the devastating fire which rapidly engulfed the house. Jonas does have insurance, but registering a claim could be hampered by the family losing all documentation and identity books in the fire. ) The Welkom City/Stad Facebook page, in conjunction with Vista and Gold FM 104.3
