Nog ’n hartverskeurende saak het skokgolwe deur die Goudveld gestuur toe ’n tweejarige na bewering gruwelik deur ’n man, wat ook ’n skopboks-afrigter is, aangerand en mishandel is. Gerrie Martin (49) en Jo-Anne Davis (42) van Virginia is Donderdag (15/06) in hegtenis geneem op klagte van kindermishandeling en die versuim om aanranding op ’n kind aan te meld. Martin word deur klagte van aanranding, poging tot moord en kindermishandeling in die gesig gestaar. Die tweejarige kind het hoofbeserings en bloeding op die brein gehad, sy linkerarm was erg opgeswel en die bloedtoevoer na sy hand was afgesny. ’n Plaaslike chirurg het gevrees dat die kind se hand geamputeer sou moes word. Die tweejarige kind was erg getraumatiseer, en weens sy erge beserings moes hy dadelik vanaf die Bongani-hospitaal in Welkom na die Universitas-hospitaal in Bloemfontein oorgeplaas word. Daar is die kind in die pediatriese hoësorgeenheid opgeneem en eers gestabiliseer voordat hy die volgende dag geopereer is. Kennisse van Martin het die saak onder die owerhede se aandag gebring nadat hulle op Vrydag 9 Junie gesien het hoe die tweejarige verniel is. Die kind het blou kolle op sy liggaam en in sy gesig gehad. Owerhede is ingelig en die tweejarige en sy broer van vyf is Maandag 12 Junie uit die sorg van Martin en sy verloofde na ’n plek van veiligheid geneem. Die kinders se ma kon finansieel nie na die kinders omsien nie en het hulle in Martin se sorg geplaas. Die kinders is deur die hof in Martin en sy verloofde se sorg op Woensdag 7 Junie geplaas, net om vyf dae later weer verwyder te word. Daar word tans ondersoek ingestel na die deeglikheid van die ondersoek wat deur die maatskaplike werker gedoen is. Na bewering word die kinders al ’n geruime tyd mishandel en aangerand, wat nie deur die maatskaplike werker

opgemerk is nie. Charmaine Labuschagne, die beheeraanklaer in die hof vir gesinsgeweld en seksuele misdrywe, sê almal wat wel bewus was van die voortdurende aanranding van die kinders, sal ook aangekla word. “Ek bedank graag die partye wat die moeite gedoen het om laat in die nag die polisie te ontbied en toegesien het dat die kinders beveilig word,” sê Labuschagne. Sy moedig ook die gemeenskap aan om nie onbetrokke te bly indien hulle bewus raak van sulke dade nie. A lack of refuse trucks in Matjhabeng, which has led to a major backlog of refuse removal, has resulted in this crucial service deteriorating into a state of emergency. A number of factors have contributed to this state of affairs, including major repairs to an aging fleet of municipal vehicles and ongoing litigation between the municipality and a service provider. The acting municipal manager, Thabiso Tsoaeli, says the municipality will receive a new fleet in the new financial year, as a substantial amount of money has been budgeted for this. Tsoaeli says the Matjhabeng Local Municipality is working around the clock to address the refuse collection backlog. He says the municipality has drafted a contingency programme to address the backlog. “I deployed 48 refuse collection personnel and five trucks to start in Welkom’s Naudeville on Tuesday

Somme klop nie Johan de Lange, Welkom: Ek kan nie help om die belaglikheid van ons berugte niemandsraad raak te sien nie. Dit word net ál meer belaglik namate die tyd aanstap. In die nuutste Vista lees ek dat ’n “meer intensiewe” afsnyprogram vir wanbetalers ingestel gaan word. Ag siestog en foeitog! Wat die ou wat oor die hek geklim het om sy werk te doen aanbetref, raai ek die niemandsraad se kontrakteur aan om herkenbare klere vir sy mense te gee. ’n Man wat oor ’n hek klim kom nie na jou toe om jou te vertel hoe baie hy van jou hou nie, hy kom gewoonlik om jou kwaad aan te doen. Dit kan noodlottige gevolge teweegbring vir die persoon. ’n Mens wonder hoe lank die kontrakteurs wat die werk moet doen, betaling van die niemandsraad gaan ontvang. As die raad nie eens self die kontrakteurs wat werk vir hulle doen kan betaal nie, hoe verwag hulle om die inwoners sover te kry om dit te doen? As betaler het die niemandsraad geen trotse reputasie om op voort te bou nie. Kyk gerus maar na die Eskom-rekening en ook na die Sedibeng-rekening. Dit is dus dan geen wonder nie dat hul voertuie in beslag geneem is tot so ’n mate dat dienste nie meer gelewer word nie. Ek wil die inwoners van Welkom vra om te weier om die vullisverwyderingsfooi op hul diensterekeninge te betaal.

Hoekom moet daar vir ’n diens betaal word wat nie gelewer word nie? In Naudeville, en ek is seker in ander voorstede ook, word daar al vir die afgelope maand of wat geen dienste gelewer nie, maar die bedrag is nog op die rekening. Miskien kan ’n regsgeleerde persoon my inlig. Dit klink vir my na bedrog, of hoe dan nou? Ek wil ook graag weet of daar iets aan die onwettige kragaansluitings gedoen gaan word. Wat die litigasie van die diensverskaffer teen die niemandsraad aanbetref, dit het hulle net aan hulself te danke. As hierdie verskaffer betaal was soos wat behoort te gebeur het, sou daar nie litigasie gewees het nie. Maar wanneer jy ’n belaglike begroting indien met ’n werklike betaalsyfer van 48% en jy hoop op ’n betaalsyfer van 85%, dan leef jy in ’n droomwêreld. Dan is jou hoop een wat die donkie omgeskop het. Selfs ’n kind wat nog in die laerskool is, weet jy kan nie ’n artikel wat R85 kos met R48 koop nie. Dis dalk nie ’n slegte idee om die niemandsraad op ’n goeie wiskundekursus te stuur om hulle die vier basiese wiskundige bewerkings te leer nie. Ek glo daar is dalk hier en daar kolleges in Welkom wat die diens kan lewer. Of hulle egter betaling daarvoor gaan kry, wel, dis nou ’n ander vraag.

Suspects caught Information from a community member led to the arrest of two men (35 and 39) for the theft of copper cable worth R60 000. On Tuesday, 6 June, at 18:30 in Sunrise, Thabong, the Thabong SAPS and Eskom security members found the two men in possession of copper cable rolls, busy burning it into bundles. The police confiscated six rolls of copper, 12 burned rolls, three large wooden reels, one iron rod and three steel rods. The suspects were arrested and a case of possession of suspected stolen property was opened for further investigation.

Three hijacking suspects were sentenced to a total of 45 years in jail. The three, Pheelo Sam Leburu (22), Kamohelo Reverance Marate (25) and Merawe Sean Matsoso (23), were sentenced on Monday, 12 June, in the Welkom Regional Court.

Three hijackers jailed On 27 May last year at 01:20, a motorist stopped with a flat tyre next to the Kutlwanong cemetery in Odendaalsrus. The

three men then approached him. They took his silver Volkswagen Polo after holding him at gunpoint.

The victim reported the crime to the police and they arrested the suspects on the same day. Through intensive investigation by Const. Vuzimusi Ngomane of the Vehicle Crime Investigation unit, the three suspects were found guilty as charged.

Drie mans het “net ’n paar bloukolle en kneusplekke” opgedoen toe hul helikopter naby Bultfontein geval het. Johan Cronjé, eienaar van Phezulu Plant Hire in Welkom, Christopher Kleynhans, vlieënier, en Trevor Smith, finansiële direkteur by Phezulu Plant Hire, was Woensdag 14 Junie op pad na Christiana toe die ongeluk omstreeks 14:00 gebeur het. Cronjé wou sien hoe die padwerke wat sy maatskappy doen, uit die lug lyk. “Ons het laer gevlieg sodat ek kan kyk. Toe ons weer wou hoër gaan, het die helikopter krag verloor,” sê hy. Hy was egter nie té bekommerd nie. “Ek vertrou die vlieënier ten volle. Hy het ons lewe gered.” Die helikopter het die grond met ’n harde slag getref, maar hulle het sonder ernstige beserings daarvan afgekom. Kapt. Stephen Thakeng, polisiewoordvoerder, sê volgens die polisierekords is geen helikopterongeluk aangemeld nie.

their own safety and securing their area, says Coetzee. Residents have voiced their concern about the poor lighting in this area. “This situation makes the area unsafe. We have approached the municpality to fix the street lights in Langeberg, Mt Ayliff, Mt

Frere, Kok, Toronto and Unicor Streets. We are awaiting their answer. Residents have indicated a willingness to fix the lighting in Langeberg Street adjacent to the long park. Other problematic locations in this area will also be addressed and fixed by concerned residents,” says Coetzee. Residents have already tarred a large section of Kok Street. This park, and the smaller play park in Kok Street, are known drug dealing areas and the parks are often used by criminal elements who are watching the houses in the area. Residents have already placed cement barriers around these parks to stop motor vehicles from entering them or parking there. Some residents in Kok Street also payed for a section of this road to be tarred.

Educate community on hygiene: The Environmental Health Practitioners in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality piloted a programme in Allanridge to promote health and hygiene. The campaign was to create an awareness about good hygiene habits such as washing hands five times a day, using a toilet for defecation and adopting safe drinking water practices. The Lejweleputswa District Municipality started the programme to reach out to schools, mothers and the local community. Suhandrie sê dat sy en Bennie die langnaweek na die Wes-Kaap met ’n leë vragmotor sou reis om meubels te gaan laai. Hulle het saam besluit om die leë vragmotor vol noodsaaklike artikels te maak vir die slagoffers van Knysna. In samewerking met Flamingo Drukkers, wat aan die Erasmusse behoort, kon 2,3 ton nie-bederfbare voedsel en water ingesamel word, asook klere, komberse en matrasse. Selfs inwoners van Kroonstad het ’n bydrae gemaak. Die vrag is Vrydag (16/06) by een van die krisissentrums, die Laerskool Knysna, afgelaai.

Altesaam 1 484 leerlinge van 42 skole het vanjaar aan die jaarlikse Taal- en Kunstefees by die Goudveld-Hoërskool in Welkom deelgeneem. Die standaard was besonder hoog en die fees was ’n groot sukses. Een van die beoordelaars was die bekende skrywer, skilder en illustreerder Fanie Viljoen van Bloemfontein. Hy het in 1987 aan die GoudveldHoërskool gematrikuleer en die adjunkhoof van die skool, Alex de Bod, was sy Afrikaanse onderwyser. Viljoen se eerste kortverhaal is in 1999 in Sarie gepubliseer. Daarna het verskeie publikasies in tydskrifte gevolg. Hy was twee keer die naaswenner in die RSG/Sanlam-radiodramakompetisie. Viljoen spog reeds met 40 kinder-en jeugboeke. Onder sy jeugverhale tel onder meer Onderwêreld, Betower, Uit, Pleisters vir die Dooies en die Nova-reeks. Hy het al verskeie eerbewyse ontvang, soos die Goue Sanlamprys vir jeuglektuur, die M.E.R.-prys vir geïllustreerde kinderboeke en hy was die naaswenner in die Lapa-jeugromankompetisie. Hy spog ook met talle kinderboekeerbewyse van die ATKV. Hy skryf veral kinder- en jeugboeke, want, sê hy, daar is nie grense aan kinders se verbeelding nie.

A very creative young artist who creates breathtaking paintings has been blessed with many talents. Neo Elton Mohohlo (25) was born and bred in the Goldfields and he attended the Boase Primary School in Virginia and the Lemotso Primary School in Thabong, Welkom. He matriculated from the Reatlehile Secondary School in Virginia in 2010. He started sketching at the age of eight and he mastered basic artistic skills during his high school career. “I was very good at sketching. Even my teachers and co-learners paid me to do their sketches,” says Neo. After school he took art classes at the Thabong Art Centre in Welkom. He specialises in portraits, painting on canvas, pastel drawings and portrait crafts. His favourite medium is charcoal sketches. He likes creating conceptual art, still life art, story mode art and cartoons. Neo also loves painting on big

walls, sun boards for display and advertisements for businesses and schools. “I want to be the best artist ever and hope for opportunities to develop my future and to take on interesting projects and work with people I can really learn more

from,” says Neo. Both his parents have passed away and his art creates an income for taking care of his household, which includes his grandmother and a cousin.

In nternationally acclaimed celebrity y opera singer Agos Moahi is part of South Africa’s internationally famous opera trio Afro Te enors. He hails from Thabong, W Welkom. Moahi has performed all over the world in countries such as Germany, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Denmark, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana, Angola and Zambia. He has shared a stage with some of the world’s greatest musicians, like Luciano Pavarotti from Italy and Luther Vandross from America. He has also performed during the president’s inaugur ration in South Africa and during t the Fifa launch in Lisbon, Portugal. He also did a television co ommercial for the BBC. The late former president of South Africa and world icon N Nelson Mandela talked very highly of Moahi’s great singing ta alent. With the Afro Tenors, he got to w work closely with popular Zimbabwean singer Oliver Mtukudzi when they recorded and collaborated in a remix of “Pata Pata” by Miriam Makeba.

Moahi is also an adjudicator of choral music competitions at schools and tertiary institutions across South Africa and he recently performed at the Evolution Pot High Tea event held in Dagbreek, Welkom. At this event, he was applauded by the Free State Department of Sport, Art and Culture MEC, who is also the acting premier of the Free State, Mathabo Leeto. She was a special guest at the event. Moahi wants to perform at this year’s Macufe main jazz festival in Bloemfontein. Moahi, Quinton Molebatsi (best known as Qboy from Lesedi FM), DJ Taaibos and Ashley Louw (an upcoming local vocalist) are currently working on a song together, which is expected to be released in August. Moahi matriculated from the Teto High School in Thabong and then went on to further his studies at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria. DJ Fantas celebrated his birthday on Thursday (15/06) at Nyakallong, Allanridge.

DJ spoils children on birthday DJ Fantas has truly mastered the art of celebrating his birthday from a completely different perspective. People expect to be in a position of receiving gifts on their birthdays, but DJ Fantas, on the other hand, has done the opposite and gave food

hampers and childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s uniforms to families in need and organised a sports tournament to celebrate his birthday. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s celebration was the 5th annual charity event held by DJ Fantas. It is now the norm that every year on 15 June, people

around Nyakallong and neighbouring towns gather for the event. The event has been joined by leaders such as the MEC of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the mayor of the Matjhabeng Municipality, ward councillors and business owners.

Cleanup held The Environmental Health Unit of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality embarked on a quarterly Cleanup Week and visited Allanridge on 9 June. After the cleanup, the community was educated about the importance of preserving and maintaining a clean and healthy environment. The Lejweleputswa District Municipality collaborated with the Matjhabeng Local Municipality to emphasise that unmanaged waste negatively affects climate change. Private sector representatives, ward councillors, community members and school children attended the cleanup. The campaign is meant to inspire and empower communities to clean and conserve their environment. The campaign was done to coincide with National Cleanup Week. All the litter was recycled. Reach out to community: The Goldfields Muslim community participated in operation winter warmth on Friday (16/06). This is part of their social responsibility and obligation as Muslims towards community members in need. The Department of Labour will embark on a weeklong inspection in Welkom from 3 to 6 July. The department will conduct inspections in the domestic sector in the Free State. Four towns, of which Welkom is one, have been identified. “These towns will be the focal points for this pilot project and domestic workers and employers are therefore earmarked for these inspections during this weeklong project,” said Nomfundo Douw-Jack, acting chief director of provincial operations in the Free State. Two inspection methodologies aimed at enhancing the quality and efficiency of the inspection process will be adopted for this project: ) Desktop inspection – an inspection that will be conducted by an inspector while stationed at the labour centre. The inspection could be finalised without physically visiting the employer, provided that all the information requested from the employer is received and the employer complies. An interview with both the employer and the employee will be conducted telephonically. ) After-hours inspection – this inspection requires a physical visit to the employer’s household. Information is requested during the inspection with the exception of unemployment insurance, as it will be required prior to the visit. An interview with the employee is conducted in person if the domestic employee resides with the employer and telephonically if he or she commutes daily. These inspections will be conducted to check compliance with the following labour laws: ) Sectoral Determination (SD) for the Domestic Sector (SD 7); ) the Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA); and ) the Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act (UICA).

She obtained: novice dressage test 1 – third place; novice dressage test 2 – fourth place; 100 cm jumping (accumulator) – second place; 100 cm jumping (competition) – first place; and 100 cm working hunter – first place. ) She subsequently took part in the third leg, which was held in Welkom on 13 and 14 May.

The start and finish line will be at the Mediclinic Welkom’s main gate. If you race, jog or walk, this is the race to enter. Athletes can enter for the following distances:

) The 10 km with a brandnew route for men and women. Entry fee is R50. ) The 5 km CANSA breast awareness campaign walk, jog or run, only for females nine years and older. Die Griffons het vriend en vy yand verras toe hulle Vrydag (16/06) in Potchefstroom die se epter teen die Luiperds ge eswaai het. Die Griffons het me et 33-17 op Olënpark ge eseëvier. Die rustydtelling was 19-12 in die Perstruie se guns. Dit was slegs die No oord-Vrystaters se tweede oo orwinning in die SuperSportuittdaagreeks.
