Crimes a concern The Welkom Cluster Trio Task Team, which was initiated in February 2017, has thus far arrested 102 people for crimes such as house robberies, murder, use of a vehicle without owner’s consent, business robberies, house breaking and theft, possession of unlicensed firearm, attempted murder, illegal immigration, assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH), possession of drugs and kidnapping. The convictions obtained for these crimes range from 18 months to 15 years in jail. The following accused were sentenced: Ishael Rabooi Sehume was sentenced to 15 years in jail for house robbery, Mpho Daniel Tladi (30) was sentenced to eight years in jail for business robbery, Pulane Irene Mokete (32) was sentenced for theft on 5 June, Lebohang Khanuka (25) and Lebone Samuel Sekhoto (26) were each sentenced to 12 years in jail for house robbery on 28 June in the Welkom Magistrate Court, and Joseph Ralekgetla (39) and Lebohang Trata Ralie (40) were sentenced for house robbery, attempted murder and illegal immigration. They received 15 years and eight years and 3 months respectively on 13 June in the Welkom Magistrate Court. Mohapi Selepe (23) was sentenced to 15 years in jail for house robbery. The unit was established by the Cluster Commander of Welkom, Maj.Gen. Lerato Molale. The members of this elite team are WO Slang van Zyl, WO Jerry Lenyane, Sgt. Bertus Olivier, Sgt. Neels Lubbe, Const. Pitso Matsie and Const. Martin Machesa. “I am very proud of the team. House robbery is a concern, but with the help of the community, we will continue to squeeze these particular crimes to zero,” says Molale.

’n Spesiale taakspan is Donderdag (13/07) deur lt.genl. Lebeoane Tsumane, die Vrystaatse polisiekommissaris, aangestel nadat vyf mense in die Goudveld vermoor is. ’n Bende wat moontlik bande met die onwettige goudbedryf het, het twee wagte by ’n terrein naby die St. Helena-myn vermoor. Die mans is doodgeskiet en hulle, die bakkie waarin hulle was en nog voertuie en ander toerusting is aan die brand gesteek. Dinsdag 11 Julie, net voor middernag, is die twee veiligheidswagte, Abrie Koch (61) en Mojalefa Tlali (ouderdom onbekend), naby die St. Helena-myn vermoor en aan die brand gesteek. bewaak en is vermoor op ’n manier wat na ’n “teregstelling” gelyk het. Global Demolitions is aangestel om die myngrond te rehabiliteer en as deel van hul kontrak, maak hulle ook die ou ongebruikte mynskagte toe. ’n Ingeligte sê hy glo vas die mans is op dié manier vermoor om ’n boodskap aan die maatskappy te stuur dat die goudsmokkelsindikate hulle uit die gebied wil hê. Mbambo sê daar was duidelike beserings aan die liggaam en ’n lykskouing sal gedoen word om vas te stel hoe die man gesterf het. Die taakspan, wat nou saam met ander eenhede sal werk, sal deur genl. Jones Qhobosheane gelei word, het Mbambo gesê. Dit is nie seker of al die moorde met onwettige mynbouaktiwiteite in die gebied verband hou nie, sê Mbambo. ) Intussen is die lyke van sewe mans wat vermoedelik weens metaangasontploffings doodgebrand het, by die Elandmyn se pompstasie bogronds gebring. Nog 11 mans wat ernstige brandwonde opgedoen het, is by dieselfde mynskag deur mynwagte gevind en in die hospitaal opgeneem. Van hulle is in ’n bedenklike toestand.

Die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit in Welkom moet byna R12 miljoen in drie paaiemente aan die bekende Goudveldse sakeman, Jan Bezuidenhout, se Goldfields Radiators & Mining Supplies betaal, het die Vrystaatse hooggeregshof gelas. Van dié bedrag is R1 miljoen rente op geld wat die munisipaliteit die laaste jare aan hom skuld. Die munisipaliteit het twee jaar gelede reeds R3 miljoen aan hom betaal, luidens ’n skikking wat Donderdag (13/07) deur regter Lepono Lekale ’n bevel van die hof gemaak is. Luidens dié bevel kan die munisipaliteit nou die meer as 30 watertenkvragmotors, voorlaaiers, trekkers en vragmotors vir vullisverwydering, wat klaar herstel is, en in retensie vir die skuld gehou is, op die plaas Esperanza in die distrik Welkom gaan haal. Van dié voertuie word al sedert 2013 daar gehou. Die munisipaliteit is ook gelas om Bezuidenhout se regskoste in albei sy eise en ook dié van die arbitrasieverrigtinge oor die skuld te betaal. Die munisipaliteit moet die eerste paaiement van R5 miljoen aan die einde van die maand, R3,5 miljoen aan die einde van Augustus en R3 443 093 aan die einde van September betaal. Indien die munisipaliteit in gebreke

bly om dit te doen, is die volle bedrag dadelik opeisbaar en is Bezuidenhout geregtig om sonder kennisgewing die nodige regstappe te doen om die geld in te vorder. Vir dié stappe sal die munisipaliteit ook moet betaal, luidens die bevel. Die skuld aan Bezuidenhout spruit uit ’n kontrak ingevolge waarvan Goldfields Radiators & Mining Supplies sedert vroeg in 2013 stootskrapers, kruiptrekkers, laaigrawe, vragmotors en motors van die munisipaliteit versien en herstel. Bezuidenhout het reeds die volgende jaar namens sy beslote korporasie, Prozel 105, handeldrywend as Goldfields Radiators & Mining Supplies, ’n eis vir agterstallige betalings teen die munisipaliteit ingestel. In 2015 is ’n volgende eis ingestel vir nog geld wat die munisipaliteit verskuldig is. Die munisipaliteit het ook sy eie werkwinkel waar herstelwerk gedoen kan word. Die skuld het ’n lang pad deur die howe geloop. Die munisipaliteit se voertuie is al deur die balju opgeskryf om verkoop te word en sy lopende rekening in die bank is ook al gevries. Die afgelope twee jaar kry Bezuidenhout nie meer werk van die munisipaliteit nie. Pieter Schuurman van Hill McHardy en Herbst-prokureurs is Prozel se prokureur.

“Ek kom vir jou ook,” het Solomon Tladi Tlake (30) aan Annemart Nothnagel gesê kort nadat hy gevonnis is vir die moord op Sophie Gehring, Nothnagel se ma. Tlake is verlede maand in die rondgaande hof in Virginia tot lewenslange tronkstraf gevonnis vir die moord op Sophie Gehring (72) van Riebeeckstad, Welkom. Hy is ’n verdere 15 jaar gevangenisstraf vir roof opgelê. Nothnagel sê Tlake het aan en af vir ongeveer drie jaar lank as tuinier vir haar ma gewerk. Hy het gereeld nie

Nothnagel se minderjarige dogter sou die naweek van 2 Oktober 2015 by haar ouma gaan kuier het. Nothnagel het toe besluit om liewer die volgende Woensdag haar dogter te neem. Gehring is op die Saterdag vermoor. “Daar was nog strokies in die huis van kruideniersware wat my ma gekoop het vir ons kuier,” sê Nothnagel. Nothnagel het die Dinsdag (6 Oktober) toe sy nie haar ma op haar selfoon kon bereik nie, uit Bloemfontein na Welkom gery. Dit was Nothnagel se verjaardag. Hier moes hulle die deur oopbreek waar hulle op haar ma se lyk afgekom het.

Tlake het in die hof gesê hy en Gehring het oor iets gestry en hy het sy humeur verloor. Hulle was in Gehring se huis. Hy het haar omgestamp, haar hande vasgebind en ’n plastieksak oor haar kop getrek. Hy het aangevoer hy het probleme met die beheer van woede. Nothnagel het aan die polisie gesê sy glo die tuinier is die skuldige. Die polisie het hom ’n week ná die moord gevang. Regter Mahube Molemela het in haar uitspraak gesê Gehring het Tlake soveel vertrou dat sy haar kwaai hond toegemaak het omdat hy daar werk. Sy het Tlake se getuienis in die geheel verwerp.

Aletta van der Walt Die ou geykte uitdrukking, “hoe meer dinge verander, hoe meer bly dit dieselfde”, is dikwels geldig. Of in die woorde van die rockgroep The Who: “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” Ek wonder hoe weeg mediavryheid in die ou apartheidstaat op teen dié in die nuwe Suid-Afrika. Vergelykings tussen die twee bedelings het mense al hul loopbane gekos. Die ou NP-regering het nie van joernaliste gehou nie en geen geheim daarvan gemaak nie. In ’n era waarin die term “polities korrek” nie bestaan het of bestaansreg gehad het nie, is daar dikwels rof met medialede gewerk. Van vryheid van spraak en persvryheid was daar dikwels min sprake. Rolprente en boeke is gesensureer en verban, liedjies is met ’n vergrootglas bekyk vir onkuise bedoelings of politieke ondertone voordat dit op radio gespeel kon word. Playboy of Hustler was in Suid-Afrika so onwelkom soos die Bybel in ’n Isiskamp. Enige politieke joernalis wat sy sout werd was, het geweet hoe ruik traangas en het ’n draai of twee in ’n geel vangwa gery. ’n Oorywerige fotograaf se filmrolletjies is dikwels met groot vertoon uit ’n kamera gepluk. Tot niet vir altyd. Die tydsgees was anders, die waardestelsel was anders en die medialandskap het verskil. Dit is skokkend dat daar vandag ook nie mediavryheid is nie. ’n Jong man het

Wanneer jy op ’n nuuswenk of nuusbrokkie afkom, bel jy die polisie om seker te maak die voorval het werklik gebeur en dat jy die feite kry. Dit is gewoonlik hier waar die frustrasies begin. Sommige woordvoerders is bevoeg en behulpsaam, maar die stelsel is ’n nagmerrie. Die meeste distrikte het aangewese woordvoerders terwyl ander, soos Kroonstad op die oomblik, elke dag deur iemand anders bedien word. Van die ondersoekbeamptes is moedswillig en woordvoerders is nie vry om net inligting uit te gee nie. Sommige hoofde dring daarop aan om eers die mediaverklaring goed te keur

voordat dit aan die media gestuur word. So gaan waardevolle tyd verlore in ’n era waarin nuus by die minuut oor talle netwerke versprei word. Bekommerde gesondheidswerkers het my al in die nag gebel net sodat ek hulle moet gerusstel dat ek nie hul name bekend sal maak nie. Dit is nadat ek die een of ander berig geskryf het oor voorkombare sterftes en die wandade wat in provinsiale hospitale plaasvind. ’n Mens sal dink die topbestuur van die gesondheidsdepartement sal die sterftes ondersoek, maar hulle is met ’n heksejag besig om uit te vind wie die inligting uitgegee het. Geweld teen verslaggewers is steeds vandag ’n werklikheid. My oudkollega Tom de Wet wou ’n polisievoertuig afneem wat in Welkom in ’n ongeluk betrokke was. Polisielede op die toneel wou hom in hegtenis neem en eers toe Welkom se polisiewoordvoerder ingetree het, is die situasie ontlont. Ek self is al aan my keel gegryp, byna met traangas gespuit en ontelbare kere gedreig dat my kamera gekonfiskeer sou word. Daar is gereeld openlike vyandigheid teenoor joernaliste. Danksy die inligtingsera waarin ons leef en die sosiale media, lyk mediavryheid in Suid-Afrika beter as drie dekades gelede. Sou ’n mens die internet, sosiale media en die beskikbaarheid van video- en kamerategnologie uit die vergelyking haal, sou daar weinig verskil tussen die twee bedelings wees.

‘Garden city’ in a dilapidated state Concerned resident, Virginia: As a resident and businessman who has lived and traded in the Virginia CBD for the past 20 years, I have witnessed this town deteriorate into a disgusting state, with overgrown bushes, broken street lights, potholes a plenty, rubbish and plastic spread all over town, burning heaps of rubble dangerously close to buildings and parked cars. What has happened to our once beautiful garden city of the Free State? What are we paying rates and taxes for? Why is garbage being burned, rather than being collected in town anymore? As for the licensing department: Why must we go to Welkom or Hennenman to

write our learners tests? “No paper” is surely not a valid excuse. Why doesn’t our licensing department in Virginia conduct roadworthiness tests or drivers licence tests anymore, when we have the necessary facilities and infrastructure right here? Is it time for Virginia’s residents to stop paying rates and taxes and rather take the initiative ourselves to clean up our town? For how much longer do we have to pay for non-existent services? I am prepared to pledge R500 per month towards a private initiative to keep Virginia clean. I challenge all other businesses to make their pledges. Who is in? ’n Egpaar van Welkom verskyn weer Vrydag (21/07) in die landdroshof in Bloemfontein op verskeie aanklagte van bedrog. Daniel Kock (45) en sy vrou, Stephanie (49), is steeds in aanhouding nadat hulle op 7 Julie die eerste keer in die hof verskyn het. Die egpaar is op 5 Julie in Welkom, waar hulle ’n buitekamer gehuur het, in hegtenis geneem op verskeie aanklagte van bedrog.

Die eienaar van die huis het agterdogtig geraak en die polisie ontbied. Die twee is deur kapt. Wouter Jerling en kapt. Bennie Strydom van die Welkom-speurtaakspan in hegtenis geneem. Kapt. Stephen Thakeng, polisiewoordvoerder, sê die Kock-egpaar word sedert 2012 in verskeie dele van die land gesoek. Volgens hom word Daniel in onder meer Parkweg in Bloemfontein, Humewood in Port Elizabeth, Jeffreysbaai, Da Gamaskop in Mosselbaai, Welkom, Richardsbaai en Wessels-

bron gesoek. Sy vrou word ook in verband met drie klagte in Jeffreysbaai en in Bloemfontein gesoek. “Die egpaar kom na bewering in ’n dorp aan en huur ’n blyplek. Hulle versprei dan hul pamflette wat hul dienste, soos die maak van staalkabinette, adverteer en as mense hulle betaal vir ’n kabinet, verdwyn hulle glo met die geld,” sê Thakeng. Kol. Christo van der Merwe, bevelvoerder van die Welkomse speurdiens, het die twee beamptes geloof en gesê dit is ’n deurbraak vir die polisie.

Die Padongelukkefonds is 'n openbare entiteit wat befonds word deur 'n brandstofheffing wat by die prys van petrol en diesel ingesluit is. Die doel van die Padongelukkefonds is om te vergoed vir verlies of skade as gevolg van ligaamlike beserings weens die nalatige bestuur van 'n voertuig op Suid-Afrikaanse paaie.

One of the hottest male gospel choirs to have emerged from Matjhabeng, the Intlanganiso Choir, is launching a CD this Sunday (23/07) at the Thabong Community Centre from 12:00. People are invited to attend the launch and entry is free. Meals will also be served and a supporting choir will be in attendance. The spokesman for the choir, Billy Setlaelo, who is also the lead baritone singer, composer, producer and arranger of the songs, told Vista that God has been on their side during their ten years of compiling the music. “We were never under any pressure to come up with a CD, but we looked forward to something perfect and something to sooth the hearts of all who will listen to the 13 hymns sung by these young men. It was all through hard work that we ultimately achieved this goal,” said Setlaelo. Through the ups and downs which the choir experienced in the ten years, they brought together 16 young men, recruited from different denominations and churches, hence the name Intlanganiso (“kopano” in Sotho and “unity” in English). Karate girl chosen as winner Andrea Charmoné Beukes (15), a Gr. 9 learner of the Hentie Cilliers High School in Virginia, has been chosen as the June winner of the Vista Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month competition. She is a talented young sportswoman who excels in karate and chess and who has a wide variety of achievements. Andrea has a first Kyu brown belt in karate. At the Andre ea moné Charm es Beuke

Northern Free State Championship held in Welkom in March, Andrea obtained two gold medals, one for kata and one for kumite. She also qualified to participate in the South African Karate Championship in Johannesburg in May, where she won a bronze medal for kata. Andrea has also been chosen for the South African team to represent the country in Ireland later this year. Andrea also excels at chess. In 2016 she was chosen for the u.16 provincial chess team. ’n Judo-kampioen van die Goudveld, Chantè Labuschagne (19), het weer goud op die Nasionale Judo-kampioenskap in Bloemfontein verwerf. Chantè, ’n oudleering aan die Goudveld-Hoërskool, het as sesjarige haar eerste judo les by haar oom, Anton Labuschagne, ontvang. Die twee stap steeds die pad saam. “Chantè het die sport vinnig bemeester en niks kon haar deursettingsvermoë stuit nie,” sê Anton. Oor die afgelope 10 jaar het sy verskeie trofeë en medaljes verower. In 2009 het sy vir die eerste keer Suid-Afrikaanse kleure in judo verwerf. In 2013 het sy kleure van die Internasionale Judo-federasie en Judo Suid-Afrika verwerf.
