Dié mynbouproses staan as “underground coal gasification” (UCG) bekend. Dit is ’n betreklik nuwe mynboumetode, maar is al in verskeie ander lande verban. Van die boere voel hulle is nie behoorlik in die saak geken nie. ’n Grondeienaarsforum is begin en Danie Botha van die prokureursfirma Wessels en Smith is aangestel om die boere se belange te beskerm. ’n Inligtingsvergadering is by die Goldfields-wildsplaas gereël. Verteenwoordigers van Vrystaat Landbou, die grondwaterinstituut van die Universiteit van die Vrystaat, Sandvetwater en die Friends of the Earth-groep was ook teenwoordig. Die maatskappy Africary het reeds by die departement van minerale hulpbronne aansoek vir mynbou- en omgewingsbemagtiging gedoen. Dawie Pretorius, voorsitter van die Africary-grondeienaarsforum, meen daar is geen waarborge dat niks fout sal gaan nie en hulle weet nie of grondwater dalk besoedel kan word nie. Die vereniging sien om na die belange van boere wat moontlik deur Africary se mynbouaktiwiteite geraak kan word. Volgens die ingenieur Johan Brand, een van die direkteure

Net omdat ander soortgelyke projekte misluk het, beteken nie dit kan nie gedoen word nie, meen hy. Volgens Brand het Eskom by sy Majuba-kragstasie ’n soortgelyke projek begin, maar dit was net ’n proefneming en is nie weens probleme gestaak nie. In die Waterberge in Limpopo is ’n UCG-projek gestaak omdat die maatskappy geldelike probleme ondervind en nie omdat daar probleme met die ontginning van steenkoolgas is nie. Brand meen suurstof word ondergronds in ’n pyp gepomp en die steenkool word aan die brand gesteek. Die steenkool kry net genoeg suurstof om te smeul, maar nie te brand nie. Gas wat so beskikbaar gestel word, staan as singas bekend. Dié gas word bogronds met ’n

pyp gevoer waar dit in groot enjins ontbrand word om krag op te wek wat dan aan Eskom verkoop word. Brand meen meer as die helfte van Suid-Afrika se steenkoolreserwes is van so ’n lae graad dat dit nie die moeite werd is om te ontgin nie. Met dié metode kan dit wel ontgin word. Hy glo dié metode is meer omgewingsvriendelik as wanneer steenkool uit die grond gehaal word om verbrand te word. Van die grondeienaars het gevra dat ’n fonds gestig word wat boere kan vergoed as dinge sou skeefloop en hul waterbronne besoedel word. Brand het beloof om met die res van Africary se bestuur te vergader om so ’n fonds te oorweeg. Die boere in die omgewing gaan nie geldelik by die projek baat nie. Dit sal ook nie tot merkwaardige werkskepping lei nie.

Goudvelder kuier by Mimi Coertse Die bibliotekaris van die Hoër Tegniese Skool (HTS) in Welkom, André van Dyk, was bevoorreg om Mimi Coertse se 85ste verjaardagviering by die LemonJack-teater in Centurion, Pretoria by te woon. Die geleentheid het op Dinsdag 18 Julie plaasgevind. Hy was die enigste Vrystater wat hierdie voorreg gehad het. “Die partytjie was ’n glansgeleentheid en voorwaar ’n gepaste manier om die diva se lewensbydrae tot musiek te vier,” sê hy. Bekroonde soprane en tenore het die vermaak verskaf. Die tenore was Coert Grobbelaar, Dewald von Solms en Chris Mostert, wat die Bel Canto Ensemble verteenwoordig het. Die soprane was Michelle Veenemans (wie se ma, Barbara Veenemans, self ’n operasanger was, en die suster van Leonore Veenemans) en Goitsemang Lehobye. Die afgetrede radio-omroeper Tinus Esterhuizen (verhoognaam Martin Lane) het ’n keurspel op die klavier gelewer wat al Coertse se bekendste liedere, van “O Boereplaas” tot “Die koningin van die nag”, ingesluit het. Ná afloop van die konsert is al die gaste genooi om ’n glasie op Coertse te klink en saam te kuier. Die televisiepersoonlikheid en sakeman Dawie Roodt het die bedankings behartig. Die bekende aria uit Verdi se La Traviata, “Libiamo ne lieti calici”, is as verrassing gesing. Sakkie Kotzé van die ATKV het vir Coertse ’n verjaardagkoek laat bak.

Ek het nog altyd groot respekte vir spinnekoppe gehad. Ek sal nooit as te nimmer ’n spinnekop aspris doodmaak nie. Hetsy met ’n blik gifstof of sommer met die kant van my skoen se hak. Operations successful The Welkom and Thabong Police clusters held a joint high density operation on Friday, 27 July. During this operation, 21 suspects were arrested. Led by the Welkom and Thabong cluster commanders, Maj.Gen. Lerato Molale and Maj.Gen. Apathia Modise, it entailed different units from both clusters. These include the Tactical Response Team (TRT) from Bloemfontein and Welkom, Public Order Policing, the air-wing, Vispol members of both clusters, the Crime Intelligence and Diving Unit, the National Intervention Unit, the Welkom K9 Dog Unit and Bidvest Mine Security. The purpose of the operation was to deal with all kinds of criminal activities in the greater Thabong and Welkom area. A search was conducted in three phases. The first phase, conducted in the President Steyn Mine in Welkom, was to disrupt illegal mining activities. The second phase took place at the G Hostel in Thabong and the last phase was conducted at 9th

Street and ARM#2 in Welkom. Searches were also conducted throughout these phases. “During the operation, 11 suspects were arrested for trespassing on mine premises, one for the possession of dagga and one for the possession of Mandrax tablets,” said Sgt Mamello Mokhuoane, the Thabong cluster’s communications officer. Items confiscated during the search included gas cylinders, plastic basins and buckets, hammers, spades, sports bags, gold brass nuggets and gold-bearing dust. “These items are suspected to be used during illegal processing of gold,” Mokhuoane said. “About 39 males from Lesotho were taken in for profiling in order to verify whether they can be linked to other crimes.” Modise thanked the members who were involved in the operation. She lauded them for doing their best to bring peace to Thabong and Welkom.

The organisation is currently serving more than 30 000 meals a month to people in need in the Goldfields. This area includes Virginia, Meloding, Hennenman, Phomolong, Welkom, Thabong and Odendaalsrus. Claiming maintenance? What you need to know! By Crystelle Fryer Biological parents as well as the legal guardian of a child have a legal obligation to pay maintenance, in other words to support the child nancially which includes contributions towards paying for food, clothing, accommodation, medical care and education. Maintenance must be paid to ensure the proper living and upbringing of the child. It is compulsory to pay maintenance and the amount of maintenance will be determined in proportion to each parent's income. Regardless of whether or not the child is born in or out of wedlock, both parents are responsible for the maintenance of that child. When can you approach a Maintenance Court? - Whenever any person legally liable to maintain any other person fails to maintain the latter person; or - Whenever good cause exists to vary or discharge a maintenance order. Which Maintenance Court should be used? One should always approach the Maintenance Court within the area in which the child or person in whose care the child is (custodian or parent), resides. The Maintenance Court is generally located in the building of the local Magistrates Court. What is the process to submit a claim for maintenance?

Police teach, reach out Members of the Welkom K9 Dog Unit, under the leadership of Lt. Col Mandisa Myeki, visited the Polokong Intermediate School in Polokong Village, Welkom, on Friday, 27 July. They spoke to the learners about the different types of drugs, like cannabis, Mandrax, cocaine and nyaope, and gave a presentation of the different types of police dogs that specialise in explosives, narcotics and patrols. They also explained the role of the K9 Unit to the learners. The police also made a difference by providing 29 needy learners with school shoes, socks and clothes. “At a recent burglary at the school, children’s food and other valuable items were stolen. The Welkom K9 Unit managed to trace and arrest the

suspects and confiscated the stolen goods,” said Lt. Col Mandisa Myeki, the commander of the Welkom K9 Unit. “That is how we came to know about the school. We decided as a team to contribute to the school’s needs and show that we not only arrest criminals, but have caring hands as well.” According to the principal, Khanyapa Khauoe, they cannot thank the police enough for their contribution. “It is very clear that these learners come from poor families who stay far away. They have to walk long distances to come to school. “We pray that God blesses these men and women in blue, because they have made a lasting impact in the lives of these children.”

- It is best to consult an attorney to nd out which is the correct court that will be able to assist you to claim maintenance and to ensure you have the correct documents to submit a claim. - The Maintenance Court will then be approached to complete the relevant application form for maintenance. - After completing the application form, the Maintenance Court clerk will provide you with a date on which you will need to go back to the Maintenance Court. The respondent (the other parent) will also be informed of the date by the Maintenance Court by way of a subpoena. On the return date, the Maintenance Court will listen to both parties and after looking into the nancial situation of both parties as well as the needs of the child, the Maintenance Court will determine the maintenance amount to be paid. If there is an existing maintenance order and the other person fails to pay, the Maintenance Court can then issue summons to institute criminal charges against the person responsible for payment. Maintenance should be paid until such time as the child is self-supporting. This means that even if the child reaches the age of 18 and he or she is not self-supporting, the maintenance may continue until the child is self-supporting. In the event that the person responsible for paying maintenance dies, the maintenance should be paid out of the deceased's estate to ensure future maintenance. After you have received a maintenance order, one can always apply to the Maintenance Court to have the amount increased or decreased especially if the nancial circumstances relating to the care of the child have changed. Night race ‘a tribute and challenge’ This year’s night race of the Eskom Athletic Club Free State will take place on Friday, 18 August. Due to Women’s Month this race will be a tribute and challenge to all the phenomenal women to support and partake in the big walk, stroll, jog or run. The organisers want to motivate all athletes with inspirational quotes: celebrate life, be actively active, life in action, one victory for excellence, happy active feet, waves of success, footprint in time, spirit and victorious. The race will start and finish at the Mediclinic Welkom’s main gate. Various prizes are to be won and newly-designed medals, made specifically for the 15th night race, are up for grabs and 1 000 string bags are available for

Tiere seëvier as wenners van toernooi Die sesde Thepa Trading Netbaltoernooi vir streekspanne, in samewerking met VKB, het vanaf 18 tot 21 Julie in Hennenman plaasgevind. Agt spanne het aan hierdie toernooi deelgeneem. Daar was vier spanne uit Lejweleputswa (die Rooikatte, Flaminke, Lions en Tiere), een uit die Oos-Vrystaat (die Kosmosse), een uit die Xhariep (Xhariep Platteland), een uitnodigingspan (die Relekile Warriors) en een uit Fezile Dabi (die Kiewiete). “Netbal van hoogstaande gehalte is gespeel,” sê Brenda Hoffman van die Hoërskool Hennenman. In die uitspeelrondes het die OosVrystaatse Kosmosse met Xhariep Platteland en die Lejweleputswa Tiere met die Fezile Dabi Kiewiete afgereken om sodoende in die eindstryd te speel. Die Lejweleputswa Tiere het as wenners van die toernooi geseëvier. ’n Eerbewys vir die span met die beste gees is aan Xhariep Platteland gemaak, terwyl die trofee vir die aanskoulikste netbal aan die Fezile Dabi Kiewiete toegeken is. Trofeë is ook toegeken aan die beste speler (vir die toernooi) per posisie.
