J Joanne Davis.

Wells developed Gasfields richest source of helium in the world Marti Will mwill@volksblad.com

The exciting and groundbreaking R650 million Tetra 4, a subsidiary to Renergen Limited, is South Africa’s first and only onshore petroleum production right holder. The Tetra 4 gas wells are currently being developed outside of Virginia, Matjhabeng. By November 2016 the company had already discovered 35 billion cubic feet of gas reserve. What makes the gasfields in Matjhabeng unique is that they are regenerating and the gas discovered here has an 11% helium component, making it the richest source of helium in the world.

Tetra 4 has a proven reserve equivalent to 1 billion litres of diesel, and a further potential 9 billion litre equivalent waiting to be extracted. Tetra 4 began production in May 2016, supplying compressed natural gas to Megabus at its depot in Virginia. “Tetra 4 is not only developing the Free State gasfields, but is also bringing added value through assisting customers with vehicle conversions to compressed natural gas,” says Stefano Marani, chief executive officer of Renergen. By May 2017 Tetra 4 delivered an uncontested environmental impact assesment for a pipeline construction. June 2017 saw the completion of a front-end engineering design for

the pipeline, and by the fourth quarter of 2017 the company will commence pipeline construction, and an intensive drilling campaign will be launched. By 2019 a fully fledged helium facility will be up and running right here in the Goldfields. This plant will supply 100% of South Africa’s helium. The advent of Tetra 4 in Virginia augurs a 2,3% growth for the Matjhabeng economy. “The plant may add 4,8% GDP to the local economy within a year of its construction,” says Marani. Apart from the wells Tetra 4 already has, the company is planning to drill an extra 200 wells over the next five years.
