Theft and vandalism are two of the causes of the north and south pump houses in Bronville not working.

The disgusting sewage problem in Bronville is receiving urgent attention and should be solved by Sunday (27/08). “The municipality is aware of the sewerage problems in Bronville. “On 10 August we procured the services of an eco-combination recycling unit. “They started working in Mandela Park on 15 August. “This was, however, ineffective due to specific challenges at the pump stations,” says Betty Maswanganyi, executive

director: Infrastructure Services at the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. Maswanganyi says the Bronville North and the Bronville South pump stations are not operating effectively due to a number of factors, ranging from large foreign objects blocking sewer lines and clogging pumps, to theft and vandalism. “Vandalism and criminal activities (especially by illegal miners) play a major role in the current situation. “If municipal workers unblock a drain today, then by tomorrow the zama-zamas will have damaged it again.

“They allegedly need the water for the gold processing,” she says. To restore the functionality of these pump stations, the municipality has appointed a service provider. “They will identify problems to ensure effective operation of the pump stations,” she says. The repair work was planned to start on Wednesday (23/08) and it may take a period of three to four days to clean everything and restore the functionality of the pump stations. Vicky Morris, the councillor for Ward 11, confirms that

both the north and south sewage substations in Bronville are not working due to vandalism. The security guard at the one station was assaulted and the pumps and electrical boxes inside were stolen, he says. Morris says he plans a community meeting in Bronville for this weekend. Details will be published on Morris’s Bronville Facebook page. The municipality is also attending to the major sewage problem at the corner of Koppie Alleen Road and Stateway in Welkom.

Munisipaliteit dok op Die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit het ingestem om R180 000 aan Brandon Swanepoel (15), ’n seun wat op 15 Mei verlede jaar aan die ankerkabel van ’n lamppaal gevat het en geskok is, te betaal. Die munisipaliteit het aanspreeklikheid aanvaar vir die voorval verlede jaar toe die niksvermoedende toe 14 jaar oue Brandon aan die ankerkabel van ’n lamppaal in Weeberlaan in Odendaalsrus geraak het. ’n Elektriese skok het deur sy lyf gegaan en hy het bewusteloos op die grond geval. Hy is in die hospitaal vir brandwonde aan sy

gesig, rug en hand behandel. Die voorval het daartoe aanleiding gegee dat Brandon simptome van geheueverlies en posttraumatiese stresversteuring getoon het en vir sielkundige behandeling verwys is. Geliefde apteker oorlede

Een van die mees geliefde en oudste aptekers van die Goudveld, Chris Louw (70), is Saterdag (19/08) weens longontsteking oorlede. Louw, wat in die Bloemfonteinse Mediclinic geopereer is, het goed aangesterk totdat hy longontsteking opgedoen het en Saterdag omstreeks 10:55 oorlede is. Louw is in Krugersdorp gebore en het daar sy skoolloopbaan voltooi. Ná skool het hy hom as apteker bekwaam en hom as jong man in die vroeë jare sewentig in Welkom gevestig. Louw, Cas Badenhorst en Tom Grobler het in daardie jare as jong aptekers saam in die Goudveld begin werk. Louw het baie belanggestel in die Rendezvous-platewinkel wat in die einste Mooistraat was waar die apteek tans is. Nadat die platewinkel toegemaak het, het hy die apteek Rendezvous genoem. Die Rendezvous-apteek is steeds op dieselfde perseel in Mooistraat en hier het Louw baie kliënte met raad en daad bygestaan. “My pa was ’n toegewyde apteker met ’n groot hart en liefde vir

Acting on a tip-off regarding possible rhino poaching, the police in Hoopstad arrested four suspects and confiscated a vehicle, a 375 calibre firearm, ammunition and rhino-poaching equipment on 6 August. Wimpie van Deventer of Rijan Security informed the police about a bakkie which could be involved in poaching and gave a discription of the vehicle, as well as details about the registration number. WO Deon van Eeden, the commander of the Hoopstad Detective Unit, requested reinforcements and Const. Sello Nkoane, Const. Fats Sellaolane, Const. Alex Mokwebe and Sgt Mosela Kgang started looking for the vehicle. When the occupants of the bakkie saw the police, the driver started shooting at the officers, who fired shots at the left back tyre of the bakkie, forcing it to stop. The driver fled, but four other suspects, aged 25 to 30, were arrested. The driver is still at large, but members of the Hoopstad Detective Unit are following every lead to trace him. “I applaud the detective commander and all members involved for arrests made and seizing the rhino poaching equipment. We work as a team with security companies, hence this valuable information,” says Maj.Gen. Lerato Molale, cluster commander of Welkom.

Louw was jare lank by die Gideon-bediening betrokke wat aan verskeie instansies Bybels geskenk het, en was ook as kerkleier baie nou by sy gemeente betrokke. Die Rendezvous-apteek is in die mark en die gesin hoop om so gou as moontlik ’n koper te kry. Dit is hul wens dat Louw se nalatenskap behoue bly. Hy word deur sy vrou, Julie (met wie hy 45 jaar lank getroud was), sy dogter, Theresa Luyt (43), en skoonseun, Victor Luyt, oorleef. Dankiesê en omgee ’n passie

Borrelbad ruk erg handuit Sowat ’n week of twee gelede moes ek in Kimberley gaan werk. Ek het in die vroeë oggendure die pad gevat en kom toe heel veilig in Kimberley aan. Ná sowat ’n paar uur se werk besluit ek om te gaan kyk waar die gastehuis is, en om sommer my goedjies af te laai. Met net een kyk na die borrelbad in die badkamer besef ek daai kort mos ’n glasie wyn of twee, én bubble bath. Ná werk hop ek toe ook sommer by die naaste mall in op soek na die wynwinkel en sommer ook ’n wynglas – ek drink g’n wyn uit ’n plastiese glas nie. Met die terugstap besef ek, ek het probleme. Almal wat my goed ken, sal weet rigting is nie my forte nie. Hoekom die uitgange van inkopiesentrums almal altyd dieselfde moet lyk, sal g’n mens weet nie. Ek kom by die (verkeerde) ingang uit en toe is die tweede probleem daar – daar staan hordes wit karre wat almal soos die poolcar lyk. Gelukkig onthou ek toe ook ek het die bubble bath vergeet en stap weer terug. Per ongeluk kry ek toe die regte uitgang en ek sien myself al met ’n lekkerte in die glas en ’n heerlike massering deur die borrelbad. Die eerste ding wat ek opmerk, is dat die jets almal opwaarts wys, maar ook maar niks gewoond nie, aanvaar ek dit moet so wees.

Ek gooi ’n goeie skeut van die bubbles in, sit die glas en die bottel wyn op die bad se rand en klim in. Nou vir die aanskakel van die storie. En dis net hier waar die sports begin. ’n Hele paar goed gebeur gelyk: Die stroom van daardie waterstrale uit die jets tref my tussen die oë en ek slaat agteroor. Ek het nooit geweet borrels kan in sekondes amper dakhoogte bereik nie. Ek kom om die dood nie regop in die gladde spul nie, en die beheerknop van die bad is totaal en al buite my bereik. Ek besluit hande viervoet gaan dalk werk, want op moet ek op. Ná sowat tien minute se gestoei, kry ek die knop en met ’n skok kom ek agter my wynglas is weg. Ek besef ek gaan onder geen omstandighede te veel beweeg nie, en ek gaan ook nie die glas soek nie en lê met groot versigtigheid liewer agteroor. Ek besef later ek sal die prop moet uittrek, want daar is geen relings aan die bad om myself uit te trek nie, en dis seepglad. Gelukkig het ek darem ’n verversinkie om die tyd om te kry wyl ek wag. Ek gaan binnekort weer Kimberley toe en dié keer vat ek maar ’n plastiese glas saam. Net vir die wis en die onwis

Elke Donderdag word die gemeenskap se nuus met ons gedeel. Daar is negatiewe nuus, maar tog word ons ook met besonder positiewe artikels verras. Ek is baie lief vir die Goudveld se mense. Hier is wonderlike omgeemense. My passie in die lewe is liefde en omgee vir my mense – mense en nogmaals mense. Dit is vir my bevredigend om vir my medemens te gee, al is dit net om vriendelik te groet of om ’n koeldrank vir ’n karwag te koop wat ure lank in die brandende son staan, of in die bibberkoue, om ons voertuie op te pas. Ek het vandag met ’n gees van blymoedigheid, dankbaarheid en vreugde ontwaak. Vandag gaan ek vir minstens twee karwagte ’n lekker beker warm koffie gee en sommer ’n tuisgemaakte toebroodjie. Asseblief. Gee vir

hierdie mense ’n fooitjie. Elke sent is vir hulle iets werd, want hulle moet kos vir hul geliefdes op die tafel sit. Ek haal my hoed vir ons joernaliste af en salueer hulle. Hierdie mense moet gevaarlike situasies trotseer en in baie gevalle hul lewe op die spel plaas om vir ons die varsste nuus aan te bied. Ons bevind onsself in ’n land met baie probleme. Die ekonomie het rommelstatus bereik en ons verbruikers is absoluut genoodsaak om die koste van huishoudelike uitgawes te besnoei en te bespaar waar ons kan. Dankie, Vista, vir al die advertensies. Ons is altyd op soek na “specials” en glo my, ons kry dit elke week in ons geliefde Vista. Dankie ook aan die jong vriendelike mannetjie wat elke Donderdag die Vista in my posbus plaas. Dit is bitter koud wanneer hy die koerant aflewer. Ek wil ons gemeenskap versoek om vir dié koerantafleweraars iets te ete te gee. Net ’n bietjie vriendelikheid kan sy selfvertroue ’n hupstoot gee en ’n huppel in sy stap sit. Baie geluk aan die Vista-redaksie vir ’n puik koerant in poniegrootte.

Subsidised decoders available The Department of Communication, in partnership with the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, will embark on a rollout of the broadcasting digital migration. This process will see the registration and installation of government-subsidised set-top boxes (STBs). From Monday (21/08), the local municipalities which form part of the Lejweleputswa District – Matjhabeng, Tswelopele, Nala, Masilonyana and Tokologo – will commence with an awareness and registration campaign programme

in preparation for the rollout. The Free State provincial and local government are strong supporters of the broadcasting digital migration project and encourage qualifying residents to register for the STBs. Evicting the Unlawful Occupier: Why the PIE is not always so tasty! By Crystelle Fryer It is now the third month in a row the tenant has failed to pay his rental, and it doesn't look like this tenant will ever be in a position to make up the outstanding rent. Can you quickly evict the tenant and replace him with a new one, or is it not quite that easy? What does our law say? In our law the current procedure to evict a tenant is unfortunately not one that has been built for speed, and often appears to favour the unlawful occupier rather than the owner. The Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (“PIE”), was enacted in 1998. PIE drastically changed the landscape in respect of evictions. PIE is only applying to residential properties. According to PIE no person can be evicted from a residential property without a court order that enforces such eviction, and acquiring such court order can be time consuming as it can often take upwards of three months to obtain. When considering that every month you are suffering loss of rental, potential damage to property and you may have to incur legal costs, the costs related to this period can add up quite quickly. Waiting for a litigious matter to be settled can be accepted as a 'normal' risk when renting out one's property. The court has the discretion to grant an eviction order or not and take circumstances as the rights and needs of the elderly, children, disabled persons and households headed by women into consideration before granting an order. This means that even though you are the lawful owner of the property you can still 'lose' the use and enjoyment of your property if the court nds that these or other similar circumstances are present. Although PIE is intended in part to help protect these vulnerable and easily exploited groups, it does in effect mean that unlawful occupiers could stay in your property for an indenite period of time in accordance with what the courts deem as being just and equitable under the circumstances. PIE does make provision for urgent applications which can dramatically shorten the time to evict an unlawful occupier. In this regard section 5 of PIE determines as follows: “5(1) Notwithstanding the provisions of section 4, the owner or person in charge of land may institute urgent proceedings for the eviction of an unlawful occupier of that land pending the outcome of proceedings for a nal order, and the court may grant such an order if it is satised that(a) there is a real and imminent danger of substantial injury or damage to any person or property if the unlawful occupier is not forthwith evicted from the land; (b) the likely hardship to the owner or any other affected person if an order for eviction is not granted, exceeds the likely hardship to the unlawful occupier against whom the order is sought, if an order for eviction is granted; and (c) there is no other effective remedy available.” Although urgent relief can be obtained, this places a heavy burden of proof on the owner, and even more so when the vulnerable groups are involved whose hardship in the event of an eviction order being granted may outweigh that of the owner. So what can a lessor do to evict an unlawful occupier? Firstly, it is important to seek legal advice and ensure that you have a well drafted lease agreement. Evicting unlawful occupiers with a well drafted lease agreement is hard enough, not to add further complications with a sloppy contract that is vague and ambiguous. Needless to say a verbal lease agreement is never a good idea. Secondly, and unfortunately, it is important to be patient when dealing with these matters. Sometimes it may even be benecial to help the unlawful occupiers relocate, even though this might put you out of pocket in the short term. Thirdly, landlords should consider requiring a deposit of at least two months rental to cover monies due by defaulting tenants. Lastly, pre-screening of lease applicants is vitally important. A little upfront due diligence can go a far way in helping identify bad tenants and avoiding time-consuming eviction processes at a later stage. Do you need assistance to evict an unlawful occupier? Inwoners van die Welkomse woonbuurt Doorn, asook lidmate van die One Way Church in Zombastraat, het hande gevat om die onooglike Peter Pan-park skoon te maak. Awareness raised at dinner A Stiletto Power gala dinner will be held on Friday (25/08) at the Greek Hall in Welkom. The theme is “#fight for women”. The aim is to raise awareness and funds to combat rape, prostitution, human trafficking, the abduction of women and targeted killings. Hospice helped The 28th annual Flamingo Rotary and Goldfields Hospice Golf Day was held on Wednesday, 9 August, at the Oppenheimer Park Golf Club in Welkom. It was well-supported by local businesses and players. The funds raised for the Goldfields Hospice will enable the association to continue its free service in the Goldfields area. “We strive to improve quality in life, dignity in death and support in bereavement to all those suffering from a terminal illness, and it is only through the generosity and unselfishness of people in our community that we are able to continue to provide a valuable service to the patients,” says Marli Young, general manager. “There was a great turnout. ’n Lank gekoesterde droom gaan vir die legendariese langasem Louis Massyn bewaarheid word wanneer hy op 67 die eerste keer die New York City-marathon gaan aandurf. Dit is die grootste marathon ter wêreld. Dié marathon (42 km), waaraan sowat 51 200 atlete van oor die wêreld heen verlede jaar deelgeneem het, vind op 5 November plaas. Dit sal die 364ste marathon wees waaraan Massyn gaan deelneem. Massyn was 22 jaar oud toe hy in die jare sewentig die eerste keer aan die moordende Comrades-wed-

loop deelgeneem het. Die goedkoop tekkies waarmee hy sy eerste Comrades voltooi het, word in die Comrades-museum in Pietermaritzburg uitgestal. Sedertdien het hy al meer as 122 000 km gedraf. Dit sluit oefenwedlope in. Massyn, ’n mediese verteenwoordiger, sê sy werkgewer, Kobie Mouton van Centurion, het vyf jaar gelede gesê as hy sy 40ste Comrades-marathon voltooi, sal hy ’n oorsese marathon vir hom borg. Mouton het woord gehou en hy gaan vir tien dae saam New York toe. “Dit sal die eerste keer wees dat ek New York gaan beleef. Ek is baie opgewonde.” Daar was 98 122 aansoe-

ke om aan die marathon deel te neem en net 16 000 is aanvaar. Massyn was een van dié atlete. Die res van die inskrywings is gewaarborgde inskrywings, met ander woorde atlete wat vir liefdadigheidsorganisasies hardloop. “Ek het ’n CD ingestuur en dit is aanvaar.” Nog iets waarna dié toegewyde atleet geweldig uitsien, is dat hy in New York na die verwelkomingsgeselligheid van Marathon Tours genooi is. “Dit is ’n groot voorreg.” Dit sal nie die eerste keer wees wat hy oorsee deelneem nie. Hy het in 2012 ook aan die Dallas-marathon en die Dubai-marathon deelgeneem.

Massyn is reeds besig om vir die New York City-marathon voor te berei. Hy draf weekliks sowat 60 km. Vanjaar was hy die eerste atleet wat 45 Comradeswedlope en 42 Twee Oseane-wedlope voltooi het. Hy het die Comrades-deelname-rekord geëwenaar en die Twee Oseane-deelnamerekord verbeter. Dit sal agt jaar neem voordat iemand hom dié prestasie kan nadoen. Hy en Mouton vlieg op 27 Oktober van die OR Tambolughawe direk na die JF Kennedy-lughawe in Amerika. Daar is medaljes op die spel. “Maar ek gaan vir die ondervinding en pret deelneem”.

The penultimate round of the 2017 SuperGP Champions Trophy takes place at the Phakisa Freeway outside Welkom on Saturday (26/08). Former champion Clint Seller (MiWay Yamaha Racing R1) has dominated the Super GP category and looks to regain the title he won in 2014 and 2015. Greg Gildenhuys (Autohaus Towing/Transport.co.za Kawasaki ZX10R) is the only rider with a mathematical chance of stopping Seller from taking another championship. Behind the leading pair is Michael White (Consortium Shipping Yamaha R1) who leads a quartet of riders all challenging for third. AJ Venter (Lekka Racing Team Hygenica Yamaha R1) is just three points behind White, with the BMW pair of David McFadden (Sandton Auto BMW Motorrad S1000RR) and veteran Lance Issacs (Supabets/ Sandton BMW Motorrad S1000RR) in hot pursuit.

Practice and qualifying take place on Friday (25/08) with a full day of racing for both the national and regional classes on Saturday. Saturday tickets will cost R100 (Pitlane) all round and spectators can bring cooler boxes, chairs and braai stands to the public area. There will be free practice on Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 and spectators are welcome. Gates open at 08:00 on Saturday.
