Welcome to sewage city Concerned resident, Welkom: This is with reference to the comments from the general public about the lack of refuse collection and the general rundown condition of Welkom and surrounding towns. Welkom has become a sewage city. Think of the sewage drying in the veld, the wind blowing the dried particles into the air and people breathing this into their lungs. Where are the voices of the ratepayers’ association, the publicity association, the chamber of business, the political leaders? If they are busy dealing with these problems, then the residents should be kept informed of problems and what is being achieved. The debt owed to the municipality by businesses, households and organs of state, is disgraceful. How could this debt be allowed to accumulate? We, the residents, need to know

their reasons. The former refuse collector has not been paid for services rendered, so they have withdrawn that service. The municipality does not have the finance to settle the debt, yet the municipality claims that the new budget will provide for a new fleet of refuse removal trucks. This then means double expenditure for trucks, the debt to be settled and the new trucks. This could be an entry under the heading of wasteful expenditure – could there be the possibility of the opportunity to score from the contract for the new trucks? A final question at this time is: Is there anyone out there who cares?

Municipality’s list of wrongs goes on and on Anonymous, Welkom: Very strange things are happening in the Matjhabeng Municipality. I am referring to the fencing of the entire civic centre. Where does the money come from? What is the purpose of this? Do the municipal officials feel threatened? If so, what about the security personnel that is employed by the municipality? Every time we complain about service delivery issues, we hear the same story: There is no money. Funny how there is enough money to pay non-working staff their monthly salaries on time. Look around in Welkom and the surrounding towns. There is no money to fix the potholes. I wonder if Jan Bezuidenhout is getting his money from the municipality for services rendered?

What about Eskom and Sedibeng? Have a look at the present state of sewerage in the entire Matjhabeng Municipality. There is no money to fix the lifethreatening issues. Another problem I want to mention is the tenders being awarded to companies to audit water metres. Many houses in the suburbs do not even have water metres. Which metres are these newly-appointed auditors going to audit? The Matjhabeng Municipality should be ashamed to waste money like this. Maybe the officials should use that money to go study and equip themselves with the necessary information instead. Then plumbers can be sent for proper training at an accredited training centre. These are just a few of the issues we as a community have with the Matjhabeng Municipality. Sadly, the list goes on and on.

Wat die meeste hinder is dat kinders in gr. 8 by ’n skool begin met ’n mikpunt om eendag vir die betrokke skool se eerstespan te speel. In gr. 11 word kinders van ander

skole genader om vir die skool te speel en word ’n groot pakket aangebied. Die seun wat al die jare geoefen het word weggelaat. Weet julle, afrigters, skoolhoofde en borge, wat julle die hardwerkende kinders aandoen? Of gaan dit oor skool-ego? Dit maak nie saak hoe seer die seuns kry nie. Ons moet besef wat ons kinders aandoen.

Three caught red-handed Three Lesotho nationals were arrested at a house in De Wet Street in Reitzpark, Welkom, by members of the Bloemfontein Crime Intelligence Gathering and Reaction Team on 10 August. The police found a Browning CZ 83 Cal. 7,65 with three rounds of ammunition and one magazine, and another Browning firearm of which the serial number had been filed off. The gun had one round and a magazine. The three men could not provide

the police with the necessary documents of legal possession of the firearms. The three suspects, aged 22, 25 and 39, were then arrested for the possession of unlicensed firearms and the possession of live ammunition. The suspects can possibly be linked to a shooting incident that recently occurred in Rheeders Park. Cluster commander, Maj.Gen. Lerato Molale, said following up on information from residents led to the positive results.

Die Padongelukkefonds is 'n openbare entiteit wat befonds word deur 'n brandstofheffing wat by die prys van petrol en diesel ingesluit is. Die doel van die Padongelukkefonds is om te vergoed vir verlies of skade as gevolg van ligaamlike beserings weens die nalatige bestuur van 'n voertuig op Suid-Afrikaanse paaie.

Ná hoe lank moet ek 'n eis indien? Indien die identiteit van die oortrede bestuurder of eienaar van die voertuig bekend is, moet die eis binne drie jaar vavaf die datum van die ongeluk ingedien word. Dít is nie van toepassing by die eis van 'n minderjarige nie. Indien die identiteit van die persoon onbekend is, moet die eis binne twee jaar ingedien word.

A young and enthusiastic entrepreneur from Welkom, Ephraim Skosana (22), has a passion to succeed and has already achieved huge milestones. Skosana attended the Welkom Technical High School and has been residing in the Goldfields for close to eight years. After school he travelled a lot. He believes it is essential to travel and to get to know the world. ”It opened my mind and I have been exposed to different locations throughout South Africa in order to accommodate a different type of mind set. The traveling taught me and gave me experience and the ability to furthermore expose myself and to broaden my horizon,” Skosana says. He started his entrepreneurial path by studying Business Management at the Goldfields Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College in Welkom. He is currently the owner of his own business. His business provides services for property development, project management, brand and business consulting and events management. He also does research, develops strategies and prepares timelines with targets to his clientele. “I am a conceptualist. I conceptualise more than I actually work, because any concept needs implementation – that’s where I come in.” He also studied Electrical Engineering and he is deeply rooted within the engineering field. Skosana sees himself as a very active and inspired individual. That is why he chose uplifting hobbies like

working out in the gym. For him this is a great stress reliever and a good way to process any sort of mental problem. He also loves reading, as he believes it stimulates a healthy mind. It is his passion to encourage and motivate young entrepreneurs and to help them to follow their dreams. “I am well aware that life gets rough and that not all are awarded the same opportunities, but it is rewarding to move away from mental strain and to believe that we are unique individuals who can achieve anything,” says Skosana.
