’n Vyfjarige seun van Mandelapark in Bronville het ’n noue ontkoming gehad toe hy amper in ’n moeras van rou riool verdrink het. Thapelo Leferefere (5) en sy boetie Thabang (7) het op Maandag 28 Augustus oudergewoonte buite hul huis saam met maats gespeel. Naby hul huis is daar die afgelope jaar reeds ’n reuse-moeras van rou riool en die hele gebied is met riool deurtrek. Thapelo het gehardloop terwyl hulle speel en het toe in die rioolmoeras beland. Die ander kinders het hom probeer red, maar hy het al hoe dieper weggesink. Die kinders het histeries om hulp geroep en ’n verbygaande taxi-bestuurder het

Die familie het ’n saak teen die Matjhabeng-munisi-

Die munisipaliteit doen tans herstelwerk en sal met Thapelo se gesin vergader om hul behoeftes te bepaal, sê Kgojane Matule, kommunikasiebeampte van die munisipaliteit.

Chaos broke out at the Matjhabeng Municipality’s building on Monday (04/09) morning when the tender box in the foyer was set alight. A large tender is reported to have closed on Monday. The Matjhabeng Municipality confirmed that the tender box in its offices had been set alight.

Police forensics experts of Welkom and Bloemfontein were on the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire. All leads are being followed up and the security camera footage is being inspected. New manager aims high The Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s new municipal manager, Thabiso Tsoaeli, says he is not a man to make empty promises. Formerly the chief financial officer of Matjhabeng, Tsoaeli says he believes in the expression that the proof of the pudding lies in the eating.. “I don’t like making f l to empty promises, but fail deliver in the end. I believe in saying less and doing more. I want to hit the ground running and make an impact. I know that it’s not going to be easy, but I have faith in the leadership of the municipality and my team,” says Tsoaeli. “I have a name and reputation to protect. Letting the council and community down is not an option.” Tsoaeli’s immediate goal is to obtain a clean audit for the municipality and to see its employees working in synergy towards this common goal. “I am a team player who believes that excellence can only be achieved when a group of individuals work with synergy towards a common blueprint. “My mission to take Matjhabeng to

greater heights will be based on team work. “Of course there are basic things which need immediate attention. There are several tenders advertised as well for resealing of roads, replacing high mast lights and repairing of leakages. “These are my medium term goals, which should impact positively on service delivery.” Tsoaeli has extensive experience in local government and the mining sector, spanning over 25 years. He has a proven track record as an accounting officer. He served the Dihlabeng Local Municipality as municipal manager from February 2010 to April 2014. He proceeded to transform the

Dihlabeng Local Municipality. When he took over the ailing municipality in 2010, they had several disclaimers and within no time he turned things around. “I managed to employ change management strategy with ease at Dihlabeng, because I believed in the abilities of my team and they reciprocated by giving me their best.” He joined Matjhabeng in May 2014 and in that financial year the municipality had 20 qualification paragraphs, which included the following major sections which led to disclaimer opinion. From May 2014, following his appointment as chief financial officer, Tsoaeli decreased the qualification paragraphs to 19. In the 2014-’15 financial year, he was instrumental in implementing internal controls and the qualification decreased to 12 paragraphs. The executive mayor, Nkosinjani Speelman, says Tsoaeli is the ideal person to take Matjhabeng to the next level. “I believe he is the right person for the responsibility of driving Matjhabeng to a desired destination. I enjoy working with him, because he’s hands on, a good listener with clear understanding of local government and I’m confident with him in charge we are destined for greater heights,” says Speelman.

‘Konferensies oor klagtes ’n foefie’

Johan de Lange, Naudeville: Ek was op Donderdag 24 Augustus om 18:00 by die konferensie van die burgemeester (Nkosinjani Speelman) in die Ferdie Meyersaal by die Burgersentrum. Ek het aan mnr. Speelman ’n geskrewe brief oorhandig met die klagtes van die inwoners van Naudeville. Ek was geskok om die vervalle trappe van die Ferdie Meyersaal te sien. Die vloerteëls van die trappe is seepglad op die koop toe. Dit is natuurlik ’n oortreding van die wet. Ek praat van die Beroepsveilgheidswet, Wet 85 van 1993. As iemand hier sou val en seerkry, kan die niemandsraad vir sy mediese sorg en beserings aanspreeklik gehou word. Nie dat die niemandsraad hom klaarblyklik aan litigasie steur nie. Hulle is pas ’n paar weke terug gelas om geld aan Jan Bezuidenhout te betaal vir dienste gelewer. As Eskom en Sedibeng met litigasie teen die niemandsraad begin, gaan dit heelwat ernstiger litigasie wees as wat hierdie niemandsraad in sy bestaan nog ooit gesien het. Tog vind die burgemeester dit nodig om speletjies met die inwoners te speel met sy sogenaamde “konferensies oor klagtes”. Mnr. Speelman, die lig in die straat waarvan ek u persoonlik en skriftelik in kennis gestel het, is nog steeds buite werking. Wil u werklik vir my vertel dat ’n elektrisiën nie tien minute kan neem om die lig te herstel nie? Mnr. Speelman, van die skriftelike voorlegging wat ek aan u gedoen het, het net mooi niks gekom nie. Die strate is nog steeds in dieselfde

haglike toestand waarin dit was, die slaggate is net groter. Die swart sakke word ook nie betyds verwyder nie. Wat het van u sogenaamde vloot voertuie geword? Wie gee die niemandsraad die reg om nie net een nie, maar sommer twee landswette te oortree? Hoe is dit moontlik dat daar geen water in die brandkrane was toe die brand in Voorspoed uitgebreek het nie? U niemandsraad oortree nie net die wet op brandweerdienste nie, u oortree ook die wet op beroepsveiligheid. U weet net so goed soos ek dat niemand die reg het om brandbestrydingstoerusting te beskadig of die werking daarvan te verniel nie. Dit is ’n bekende feit dat die niemandsraad daarvoor verantwoordelik is om ten alle tye die brandbestrydingswater in stand te hou teen die regte druk en hoeveelheid. Wie is die persoon wat dit verhoed het en hoe het dit gebeur? Mnr. Speelman, kan u vir u die litigasie indink as daar geen brandkraanwater is in geval van ’n brand in die winkelsentrums? Dit is dus nou finaal bewys dat u sogenaamde “konferensie” net ’n foefie was. Waarvoor, sal net uself weet. Mnr. Speelman, die ou Romeine het beweer dat hul keiser Nero viool gespeel het tewyl Rome gebrand het. U niemandsraad is besig om presies dieselfde te doen. Waarlik, u sal iets moet doen, en vinnig ook.

A meeting was held near Tosa Campus Goldfields FET College on Sunday (03/09) at 08:00. We were invited to raise complaints and address issues within the community. The executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Nkosinjani Speelman, was the guest speaker, but he was not available. He did not send a representative and the community was very disappointed. The issues which were raised included illegal occupation and bribery involving giving people sites which are not legally theirs. The SASBDEF, which represents small business, was there to represent the community to empower their businesses. If the municipality cannot represent the community, it should be discontinued. We will see what we can do to help the community; 2019 is around the corner and this organisation will stand for elections so that we can help the community.

Just because they are situated nearby, does not make them part of us, because we do not have any gangsters in Bronville.

The Central University of Technology (CUT) in Welkom hosted hundreds of future scientists on 26 August for this year’s Welkom Regional Eskom Expo for Young Scientists. The expo offers learners the chance to hone their problemsolving skills while addressing some of the country’s most pressing issues. Anina Nel, the regional science fair director who has been involved with the Eskom Expo since 1996, says the Eskom Expo creates opportunities for learners to gain skills that will prove valuable later on. “They’re learning skills from this Eskom Expo that they’ll be using at varsity level. Even if they don’t get gold, they’ve learned research skills that they can keep forever,” Nel says. Arsheen Ahmed, a Gr. 12 learner of Welkom-Gimnasium, demonstrated these research skills through her project that investigated the healing properties of snake venom. The matric student had judges speaking animatedly of her potential. “Snake venom as a cure for cancer? This is something different and generally not something you’d expect,” said Edrich Schmidt, judge and teacher at the Welkom High School. This is Arsheen’s fourth year at the Eskom Expo and her research suggests that snake

She tested her theory by milking the snakes to get the venom and making an ointment. “I now need to go to university so that I can play around with the peptide bonds and move towards curing stage three of breast cancer and cervical cancer. Maybe I could also cure menstrual pains,” said Arsheen. Her dreams may soon become a reality thanks to the Eskom Expo, where she not only received a gold medal for her work, but also scooped up the sought-after Eskom Expo Best Female Award. Arsheen was also selected as one of four students who stand a chance of winning a bursary at CUT. The other highly coveted Eskom special prize went to

Abram Marothodi. Abram, a Gr. 12 learner of the Leseding High School, won the Eskom Expo Best Energy Award for his project “Maths Laboratory”. The Eskom Expo Best Development project went to Boitumelo Dikana and Thabo Dick, Gr. 11 learners of the Rainbow Secondary School in Bultfontein, for their project which is aimed at addressing problems experienced with radio antennas. Learners were inspired by guest speaker Bianca Reyneke, a student who has participated in the Eskom Expo multiple times and went on to win a bursary to Stellenbosch University. Reyneke also attended the SciFest Africa Science Festival and the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair.

Singer asks help for wife, baby The pregnant wife of a well-known Goldfields singer, Dusty van Zyl of the band Strange Brew, has been diagnosed with leukemia. Elsabe van Zyl is currently receiving treatment in the Life Flora Clinic in Roodeport. What complicates matters further is that she is 25 weeks pregnant. The baby, who will be known as Luke, will be born prematurely in the next three weeks. Over the years Dusty has been involved in several charity projects in the Goldfields, and now he needs the help of the community he has always served. His friends in the music industry, especially Unleash your Voice, Instituition and Strange Brew, have come forward to raise funds to assist the family, but the funds raised so far are insufficient. A desperate father who is an Ethiopian refugee in South Africa is urgently seeking help to get a South African identification document (ID) for h his daughter, who was bo orn in South Africa in 2008. 2 Yohannes Fayesa and his wife came to South Africa from Ethiopia

about 20 years ago. Their daughter, Samerawit Fayesa, was born in Heilbron on 4 August 2008. Samerawit is currently a learner at the Kingdom Academy Primary School in Welkom. She is an excellent athlete and performs well in cross-country. Unfortunately she never progressed further than Welkom, because she does not have a South African birth certificate or ID. The parents and the school cannot get assistan-

ce from the Department of Home Affairs. The department says that because both the parents are from Ethiopia, they cannot issue these documents for the child born in South Africa. They only issued a formal recognised refugee status form. The family needs assistance with this process and have issued a plea to anyone able to help. Chantelle de Abreu, a former learner of the St Dominic’s College, Welkom, received a prestigious Queen’s Young Leaders Award at a special ceremony held at Buckingham Palace in London. The Queen’s Young Leaders Awards recognises and celebrates exceptional young people aged 18 to 29, in the Commonwealth, who are driving change within their communities and transforming people’s lives. Chantelle received her award from Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Chantelle is the founder and director of Educating Athletes. She was chosen in recognition of her dedication to helping marginalised young people pursue their education and have access to mental well-being services while they pursue their careers in sport. She believes that this award will help her become an effective leader within her organisation, as well as the community that she works in. She was also honoured by being named among Mzansi’s Top 100 in 2017. Chantelle says this experience has left her inspired and wanting to encourage all people, young and old, to pursue their dreams and goals. Chantelle is a born and bred Goldfields girl. She was crowned as Vista Miss Goldfields in 2005, and also won the titles Miss Charity and Miss Ball Gown. Chantelle matriculated from the St Dominic’s College in 2006.

Die kinders wat in dié jeugsorgsentrums woon, is deur die hof as sorgbehoewend bevind en is van hul ouers of voogde verwyder. Die jeugsorgsentrums bied aan hierdie kinders ’n huis met ’n bed, klere, gebalanseerde etes en opvoeding. Die subsidie wat die huise van die staat ontvang, dek ongeveer 50% van die sentrums se uitgawes. Vir die res is die sentrums afhanklik van skenkings en betrokkenheid van die gemeenskap en besighede in die streek. Engo hou gereeld geldinsamelings om te help om aan die behoeftes van die sentrums te voorsien. Die kuns-en-matuitstalling word vanjaar vir die agste keer gehou. Dit vind van 14 tot 16 September by Jasmynstraat 11 plaas. Die uitstalling kan op dié dae van 10:00 tot 18:00 besigtig word. Op Saterdag 16 September kan die teetuin van 09:30 tot 16:00 besoek word. Die teetuin is ’n hoogtepunt op Engo in die Goudveld se kalender.

“Dit bied hulle die geleentheid om saam met die gemeenskap en vriende te kan kuier terwyl ’n koppie tee of glasie wyn, ’n musiekuitvoering en eetgoed geniet word, terwyl die kuns en matte ook besigtig kan word,” sê Mitzi Heiriss, Engo se administratiewe beampte in Lejweleputswa. Die matte is in September by Constantia Home and Gift Centre in Stateway beskikbaar. Benewens werke deur ou gunstelinge soos Rika Senekal, Hennie Niemann, Anine Barnard (etse), Michael Heyns (etse en olieverfskilderye) en Hannatjie de Clerq, is daar ook werke deur Zerk de Villiers, Kaffie Pretorius en Kobus Kotze (bekende Suid-Afrikaanse skilder) en sy dogter Mariaan, wat ook met olieverf skilder.
