House to give peace Only registered place of safety for babies, toddlers in FS opens in Welkom Marti Will mwill@volksblad.com
The only registered place of safety for babies and toddlers in the Free State, opened its doors in Welkom last week. House of Shalom forms part of House of Hope Community Life Development (HOHCLD), and has been designated as a Child Protection Organisation (CPO) in terms of the Children’s Act. “We officially opened the house on Thursday (01/03). Our dedicated staff chose the name House of Shalom for our new toddlers’ safe house. Shalom is a word meaning peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare and tranquillity. The reason why we chose this name is that the toddlers coming into this home will be scared and traumatised and we believe they will experience peace and love in House of Shalom,” says Jean van der Westhuizen, project administrator. “HOHCLD is very proud to be registered as a CPO. We are also very grateful to the Goldfields Casino for renovating and transforming the building for House of Shalom,” says Van der Westhuizen. In 2005 the Goldfields Casino renovated and donated a house to the project and House of Joy opened in February 2006. The casino also facilitates the annual Charity Auction in aid of

HOHCLD. House of Shalom can accommodate ten toddlers. There are two caregivers and one supervisor in charge, and the house will make use of volunteers as it does at its other homes in the project. HOHCLD currently provides foster homes and care to 17 children in three separate houses, each with their own foster mother and caregivers.
The HOHCLD was initially known as the House of Hope Project, and functioned in partnership with the AFM Executive Welfare Department (Umephi) as a NPO community project. House of Hope was started in 2004 as a safe house with the capacity of housing 12 babies a time. These babies were babies with special needs (HIV-infected, HIV-affected, HIV-orpha-
ned, abandoned, physically disabled and more). “Because the need in our community was so great, House of Hope quickly expanded. “Within a year and a half three foster homes were opened in addition to the safehouse. These foster homes, House of Love (foster care home for boys), House of Peace (foster care home for girls) and House of Joy

(foster care for toddlers), houses a total of six children. “In the ten years to follow the divisions Hope Life (pregnancies and rape) and Hope Support (Tough Love) were launched. “In 2015 House of Hope obtained its own NPO number, and has since functioned autonomously as HOHCLD with its own constitution and board,” Van der Westhuizen says.
