Residents ‘jailed’ Marti Will

Five prominent residents from Welkom will be “arrested” early on Saturday (11/11) and will be “incarcerated” at the Welkom flea market from 09:00 to 13:30. “Each accused will be charged and found guilty. “They will only be released from custody when each of the accused has complied with their sentences: 20 units of blood each,” says Alta Pienaar, client services manager of the Welkom branch of the South

African National Blood Service (SANBS). This forms part of the annual SANBS Jail-inBleed-out campaign. “Each accused must find 20 people, or even more, to donate blood on their behalf to ensure their release from jail,” says Pienaar. “One unit of blood saves three lives. ’n Geliefde in jagkringe en oudburgemeester van Hennenman, Izak Abram de Villiers (77), beter bekend as Sakkie, is skielik aan ’n hartaanval oorlede. De Villiers, wat die afgelope 56 jaar op die Goudveld gewoon het, was Donderdag (02/11) besig op sy plaas toe hy inmekaargesak het. Een van sy werknemers het hulp ontbied, maar toe die familie opdaag, was De Villiers reeds dood. “My pa se dood was skielik en onverwags, want hy was nie siek nie. Hy het nog die oggend heerlik aan my ma se ontbyt gesmul,” sê sy dogter Deidrè.

De Villiers is in Excelsior gebore en het daar op die familieplaas Leeuspruit grootgeword. Hy het sy skoolloopbaan aan ’n plaasskool in Excelsior begin en het hom ná gr. 10 by die Tegniese Skool in Ficksburg aangesluit. Direk ná skool in 1958 het hy sy ambag as meganiese ingenieur by Barloworld in Bloemfontein begin. In 1969 het hy sy eie firma, Izak de Villiers Diesel Dienste, gestig en in 1974 het hy Hennenman Bande op die been gebring, waarvan hy drie takke, in Hennenman, Welkom en Virginia, oopgemaak het. De Villiers was ’n welbekende inwoner van Hennenman wat vir sy gemeenskap omgegee het. In die vroeë jare 90 was hy

ook burgemeester van die dorp. Hy het in die Laer- en Hoërskool Hennenman se beheerliggaam en in die kerkraad gedien. Sy groot passie en liefde was jag en die jagtersverenigings waarby hy betrokke was. De Villiers was in 1980 een van die stigterslede van die Vrystaatse Jagtersvereniging in Bloemfontein en die aanvoerder van die Noord-Vrystaatse Jagtersvereniging, wat in 1984 gestig is. Hy het as voorsitter en president van die Vrystaatse én Noord-Vrystaatse jagtersvereniging gedien. In 2016 het hy uitgetree as president van die Noord-Vrystaatse jagtersvereniging en ’n medalje vir 32 jaar se bydrae tot dié tak ontvang. “Dit was sy gunsteling-tydver-

dryf om in die veld op die plaas te ry en tussen die diere te wees. My pa het ook gereeld gaan jag en jagters op sy plase ontvang. Hy was lief vir lees en het ’n groot hart gehad wat nooit kon nee sê nie,” sê Deidrè. De Villiers was met Bessie de Villiers (76) getroud. Die egpaar sou op 16 Desember hul 54ste huweliksherdenking gevier het. Hy word oorleef deur Bessie en sy dogters, Rene van Rensburg (50), Irma de Jager (47), die tweeling Izaan Volschenck en Deidrè de Villiers (42), en Melanie Koch (39). Die egpaar se enigste seun, Izak, is in 2003 oorlede. De Villiers se roudiens sal Saterdag (11/11) om 11:00 in die NG Moederkerk Hennenman in Fouriestraat plaasvind.

Landdros Johan Bosch (63) is Vrydag (03/11) aan ’n longkwaal in sy huis in Riebeeckstad oorlede. Nadat dokters ’n longkwaal by hom gediagnoseer het, het hy ’n geruime tyd met die siekte geworstel. Andries Johannes Bosch het in Balmoral groot geword en aan die Landbouskool in Brits gematrikuleer. Hy het sy regsloopbaan by die Departement van Justisie op 6 Desember 1971 begin en sy regsstudies deur Unisa voltooi, waarna hy 32 jaar lank as landdros gewerk het. Sy kollegas beskryf hom as ’n baie objektiewe en insiggewende persoon; ook ’n uitstekende en regverdige landdros wat nie beïnvloed kon word nie. “Bosch was ’n vinnige en knap landdros wat op ’n daaglikse basis baie sake kon afhandel. Hy het oor ’n magdom kennis beskik en kon altyd op ’n objektiewe en baie logiese manier sake ondersoek en afhandel,” sê aanklaer en kollega Charmaine Labuschagne. Bosch was ’n buitelugmens en was gaande oor die bosveld en om te kampeer. Hy was ’n voëlkyker en het graag die natuur en voëls bestudeer. Hy het ook baie gelees en dit geniet om tuin te maak. “My pa was ’n man van min woorde, maar wanneer hy gepraat het, kon ’n mens luister. Hy het met baie wysheid gepraat en het ’n baie

Do not block sewer lines Anonymous, Bronville: I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the municipal manager of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Thabiso Tsoaeli, for assisting us with the unblocking of sewer lines in Bronville. The Bronville community has experienced unbearable sewer blockages for months. We were delighted to notice the workers with sewer trucks working around the clock after hours to unblock it. I can really see a bright future for

the Matjhabeng Municipality with a leader of such calibre. However, the community of Bronville will have to take responsibility and not throw foreign objects into the sewer lines that cause these blockages, which affects us all.

welcome and accompany the Dutch ambassador, did not arrive. Mayor Speelman did not send a delegation to welcome the ambassador. Ambassador Marisa Gerards was ill-treated. She tried to call the executive mayor on his cell phone. Tipoffs give police the edge Moeti Molelekoa, Thabong: I would like to congratulate the Monyakeng Wesselsbron community for giving the police a tip-off about the theft of tablets and equipment reportedly stolen from the Chief Albert Luthuli Clinic in Monyakeng. A total of 91 packets of ARVs were recovered, and four suspects were arrested and appeared in court on 3 November. Hundreds of ARVs are stolen daily by syndicates at Lejweleputswa clinics. There are also allegedly insiders involved in the thefts. While the Wesselsbron burglars were caught red-handed by the police, many other cases are often thrown out of court due to a lack of evidence. I am deeply impressed by the community members who reported the burglars to the authorities. It is the patients who need this care that suffer the most as a result of this crime. Patients spend long hours in lengthy queues due to stolen computers. The HIV programme in this country has grown from 923 000 patients on

treatment in 2009 to 3,9 million by the end of August. Most of the stolen ARVs are reportedly smuggled underground for the illegal miners. These zama-zamas use it for either their own treatment or in the manufacturing of a drug called nyaope (a concoction of marijuana, rat poison and ARVs). Before heading underground, zamazamas themselves were once registered as patients at the clinics. Some of these zama-zamas have since defaulted and have been registered with false regional addresses. Also, stock auditing at the clinics is in disarray. A single ARV costs R1 000 over the counter and sells for R5 000 each underground. Other consumables to the value of millions of rands are smuggled underground daily. These zama-zamas are said to be earning R500 a day by grinding up a 20-litre bucket full of rock. They are earning an average of up to R100 000 a week. They are mostly immigrants from neighbouring SADEC countries and have families back home who they are supporting.

Five guilty of murder Five men have been sentenced to 12 years in jail for the murder of Molahlehi Simon Kok (33) on 25 March this year. The accused, Helepi Helepi, Mpho Ramogupane, John Masuwane, Phakiso Sarel Molete and Ntatabana Japhta Manonye, aged 22 to 25, were sentenced on Friday, 13 October, in the Ventersburg Regional Court by Magistrate Tiloshnee Ramdeyal. Ramontsheng Lekgetho prosecuted. “The accused had assaulted Kok on the morning of 25 March. He was certified dead at the scene. “Helepi was on the scene and was arrested in connection with the murder. He divulged the names of the other four who were all arrested by Const. Tshediso Sakoane on the same day. “Investigation followed and all evidence was brought before court,” says Sgt Mamello Mokhuoane, police

spokesperson. A sister of the deceased, Maleshoane Lipholo, says the family is happy with the outcome of the case, as justice has been served. “I thank the investigating officer, Const. Remembrance Day celebrated The annual Remembrance Day parade by members of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth) will take place on Sunday (12/11). The parade will start at 10:30 for 11:00, and all of those who have lost loved ones in active service are welcome to lay a wreath at the Welkom Shellhole. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November every year to recall the official end of World War 1 (WWI) on that day in 1918. Hostilities ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 11th month

with the signing of the Armistice. The ceremony has since become an occasion where all of those who have fallen in combat during various wars are commemorated. It is normally held on the first Sunday following 11 November. Remembrance Day is also known as Poppy Day, as red poppies bloomed on some of the worst battlefields of WWI. Police watch over shopper safety The contact point of the Welkom Business Watch was officially launched at the Goldfields Mall on Friday (03/11). The cluster commander of Welkom, Maj.Gen. Lerato Molale, thanked all stakeholders for their involvement in this venture. He said the police cannot fight crime alone. “Together we can do more. “Safety starts with you, and business people and shoppers must ensure that they do not carry a lot of cash. “I urge shoppers to swipe rather than carry cash,” Molale said. Col. Didi Ramoolla, the acting police station commander of Welkom, thanked all stakeholders for their involvement, which ultimately led to the launch of this business watch. He emphasised that the police in Welkom will not police the mall alone, but the entire Welkom central business district (CBD). Ramoolla said the police in Welkom will ensure that business premises and shoppers feel safe during this festive season.

The official festive season operation will soon be launched in Welkom, he said. “Cheryl Seymour, manager of the Goldfields Mall, appreciates the joint venture which will help to ensure that the entire CBD is safe, and which is operating from their premises,” Capt. Stephen Thakeng of the police’s liaison and communications section in Welkom said. According to Thakeng, Seymour said they are more than willing to assist in any way to contribute towards the reduction of crime in the Welkom CBD. Ramoolla and his management, the Goldfields Mall management and other stakeholders attended the opening of this facility that was launched at Entrance Two of the mall. The MMC of Public Safety and Security in the Matjhabeng Municipality, Vicky Morris, welcomed everybody who attended the event. The event was also attended by officials of the provincial Traffic Department, private security companies, Matjhabeng Security and ER24.

The Nutcracker, a classical ballet piece, will be performed by the young dancers of the Dance Alive Studio in Welkom. The show will be presented at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre in Welkom on Friday (10/11) and Saturday (11/11). Tickets are available at the theatre at R100 for pensioners and young children and R120 for learners and adults. This classical piece has been performed by ballet companies across the world and is a true Christmas treat. The Dance Alive Studio wants to share the story of magic, delights and mystery, a sugarplum fairy, a toy soldier and a little girl’s dreams with the people of Welkom. The studio was opened in 2000 and Amanda Matthysen has been the dance instructor for the past five years.

Athlete rises to stardom Kgabaneng Khoathane (16), a Gr. 10 learner of the Hentie Cilliers High School in Virginia, has been chosen as the October winner of the Vista Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month competition for her sporting achievements in athletics and netball. She took part in the Sentraal NWU Pukke Top 20 athletics meeting, where she secured a fifth place in the u.17 high jump event. She also achieved a third place in high jump at the Clover Top 10 athletics meeting held earlier this year. Kgabaneng plays for her school’s first netball team, as well as for the Free State and South African Schools Netball (SASN) u.16 teams. Kgabaneng was also selected for the top 35 u.16 South African netball squad during the national u.16

Die veelsydige judo-kampioen van Virginia Chantè Labuschagne (19) was die enigste Suid-Afrikaner wat haar land by die onlangse junior judo-wêreldkampioenskap in Zagreb, Kroasië, verteenwoordig het. Labuschagne, wat in die 63 kg-afdeling deelgeneem het, het teen Japan se Honoka Araki, wat tans die wêreldkampioen is, te staan gekom. Sy het haar geveg verloor. “Toe ek besef ek gaan teen die wêreldkampioen veg, was ek nogal bang en baie senuweeagtig, maar met my afrigter, Anton Labuschagne, se ondersteuning en strategie, het ek vir 2 min. 35 sek. geveg,”sê Labuschagne trots. Sy sê dat die wêreldkampioenskap wat einde Oktober plaasgevind het in ’n heel ander klas was.
