Elke hond kry sy dag, en vir ’n jong Amerikaanse veghondjie het sy goeie dag gekom meer as vyf maande nadat hy by ’n huis in Welkom gesteel is. Ryan du Plessis, ’n inwoner van Riebeeckstad by Welkom, sê Bullet, toe maar twee maande oud, is op 30 Mei uit sy erf gesteel. Du Plessis werk in die boubedryf en was skaars ’n uur en ’n half weg van die huis toe iemand sy hond van agter ’n geslote hek gesteel het. Hy het die wêreld vol na Bullet gesoek. Hy het Bullet by die DBV en Claws in Welkom as vermis aangegee, maar niemand kon hom help om die hond weer op te spoor nie. “Ek het al vrede daarmee gemaak dat ek hom nie gaan terugkry nie en ’n ander hond in sy plek aangeskaf,” sê Du Plessis. Alecia Prinsloo het op 8 November na ’n huis wat in die mark was, gaan kyk. Agter in die erf in Joanestraat, Riebeeckstad, het sy op ’n verwaarloosde hond in ’n hok afgekom. Sy het onmiddellik die DBV laat weet. Kingsley Nkala, ’n inspekteur van die DBV, sê hy was geskok om die hond te sien, wat in ’n klein hokkie sonder kos en water aangehou is. Hy het onmiddellik op die hond beslag gelê en die veearts wat hom ondersoek het, het gesê die hond ly aan erge wanvoeding. Die hond sou nie die mishandeling veel langer oorleef het nie, sê hy. Hy was so verhonger dat hy net ’n klein bietjie kos op ’n slag kon eet. ’n Polisielid, Lizl Scheepers,

het intussen op die DBV se Facebookblad foto’s van die verwaarloosde hond gesien en onthou dat Du Plessis vroeër vanjaar na sy hond gesoek het. Du Plessis is laat weet dat Bullet moontlik by die DBV in Welkom was en hy het gaan kyk of dit wel sy hond is. “Hy was maar net twee maande oud toe hy gesteel is, maar hy het my dadelik herken,” sê Du Plessis.

Hy sê daar word verskriklik baie bulterriërs en veghonde in Welkom gesteel. Hy glo die hond word gesteel vir sindikate wat hondegevegte bedryf. Nkala sê hy is nog op soek na die man in wie se besit Bullet was. Die man, wat glo vir ’n veiligheidsmaatskappy werk, huur ’n buitekamer op die erf in Joanestraat en is nie gereeld by die huis nie.

Despite being faced with major setbacks and vandalism, the Matjhabeng Municipality is giving the sewage problem at Toronto Pan, Lakeview, urgent attention. On 6 September the Western Pump Station was badly vandalised and the electrical MCC panel was damaged. “All of the cables were stolen, and electrical motors damaged,” says Betty Maswanganyi, executive director for infrastructure services at the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. On 21 October the panel was repaired and all electrical cables were replaced. They are still waiting for the electrical motors. “The pump station only worked for three days, before it again clogged up due to overloaded sump. “A service provider has been appointed to clean the sump. The Matjhabeng roads department will fill the surrounding area with gravel to enable heavy equipment to access the pump station for the cleaning of the sump. The work should be completed by 24 November.” Vista reported on 21 October that the residents around Toronto Pan were facing an ecological disaster, as unchecked raw sewage had been flooding the pan and adjacent area since middle September.

The police in Welkom are looking for four men who “accidentally” robbed a resident of Paballong Village in July. It became apparent from a conversation between the robbers during the robbery that they were robbing the wrong house. Despite their “mistake”, they proceeded with their dastardly deed. The home owner was asleep when he heard a window pane being broken. He was overpowered by four men. “The 48-year-old complainant jumped from his bed and tried to open his bedroom door, but an unknown person was already at his door. He then tried to forcefully close the door, but he was overpowered by three more suspects,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng of the police’s Department of Corporate Communication, Marketing and Liaison. “They demanded cash, cellphones and gold. Ná 41 jaar in die onderwys gaan Gert Viljoen, skoolhoof van die Hoërskool Riebeeckstad, amptelik die tuig neerlê. “Ek was een van min bevoorregte mense om my passie en dit waarvoor ek ’n groot liefde gehad het in my beroep te kon uitleef,” sê Viljoen. Gert Nicolaas Viljoen (64) is ’n gebore Bloemfonteiner en het aan die Hoërskool Sand du Plessis in Bloemfontein gematrikuleer. In 1971 het hy sy militêre opleiding in Heidelberg voltooi en begin werk as klerk by die departement van gemeenskapbou en die destydse Universiteit van die Oranje-Vrystaat ten tyde van sy studies. Viljoen sê dat een van sy onderwysers op skool al sy opleidingpotensiaal identifiseer het en hom toe reeds aangemoedig het om onderwys te studeer. Hy het ook besef opleiding en om met kinders te werk het natuurlik gekom. Hy het ’n BA graad en hoëronderwysdiploma aan die UOVS voltooi. Sy onderwysloopbaan het in 1977 aan die Hoërskool Hoopstad begin en in 1980 het hy ’n pos by sy alma mater, die Hoërskool Sand du Plessis, aanvaar. Aan die einde van 1996 is hy as departementshoof aan die Hoërskool JBM Hertzog in Bloemfontein aangestel en van 1990 tot 1993 was hy departementshoof aan die Hoërskool Fichardtpark in Bloemfontein. In Januarie 1994 is hy as hoof van die Hoërskool Olien in Fauresmith

aangestel. Sedert 1997 is hy die hoof van die Hoërskool Riebeeckstad. Viljoen het hoofsaaklik geskiedenis en Afrikaans ebied. vir gr. 8 tot gr. 10 aange In sy loopbaan was hy d deell van die onderwysdepartement se taakspan om onderwysers vir die nuwe kurrikulum op te lei. Hy was ook 12 jaar lank nasiener vir geskiedenis. Een van die hoogtepunte in sy loopbaan was toe hy drie jaar lank eksaminator vir geskiedenis in die Vrystaat was en ook in 1994 die eerste vraestel in die nuwe bedeling opgestel het. Ondanks die bedrywigheid van sy onderwysjare, het hy deeltyds studeer en ’n BA honneursgraad en ’n BEdgraad behaal. Viljoen het ook ’n sterk betrokkenheid by sport gehandhaaf. Hy het verskeie kursusse vir atletiek, krieket en rugby voltooi en in verskeie sportsoorte as voorsitter en bestuurder op provinsiale vlak gedien. Hy het sy rugbyskeidsregter-eksamen geslaag en was nege jaar lank die eersteligaskeidsregter van die Vrystaat.

Op kult kulturele gebied het hy naars tot op provinsireden ale vlak afgerig en het y ook destyds die hy j junior meisies-drilpeloton afgerig. Sy peloton was ses keer die wenner in die Vrystaatstreek. Viljoen het ook jare lank die SuidAfrikaanse Onderwysersunie (SAOU) s ge edien. Ek wil graag die nuwe “E geslag onderwysers bemoed deur d dig vir hulle te sê onderwys is ’n roeping, en ons as onderwysers maak ’n indruk op elke kind wat ons onderrig se lewe,” sê Viljoen. “Dit is belangrik om die kinders altyd eerste te stel, want sonder geleerdheid is daar geen toekoms vir ons land nie. “Vat jou roeping as onderwyser vas, bly positief en maak so ’n verskil in elke kind se lewe.” Ná sy aftrede gaan hy in Riebeeckstad aanbly, maar hy beplan om so veel moontlik te toer en die land te besigtig. Hy en sy gesin is kampeerders en hy wil graag eerste die Weskus en Tuinroete besoek. Sy gunsteling-kampeerplek is Natalia aan die Natalse kus. Hy is getroud met Christine. Hulle het twee seuns, een dogter en sewe kleinkinders. Hy beskou sy lewe as suiwer genade van bo en is dankbaar dat hy sy roeping ten volle kon uitleef.

Help, die Goudveld verval Antoinette Schoeman, Riebeeckstad: Gaan die premier van die Vrystaat, Ace Magashule, sy skitterblink beloftes, projekte en voornemens laat realiseer? Gaan hy werklik daadwerklik daaraan werk, in samewerking met sy paneel bestuurders van die munisipaliteite in die Vrystaat? Gaan hy elke dorp in die Vrystaat besoek en sien waaroor ons belastingbetalers kla en al ons vrae beantwoord? Ons is immers die mense wat sorg dat hy elke maand sy salaris stiptelik ontvang. Dit is nie net Bloemfontein wat “vullisstatus” bereik het nie. Daar word so baie geskryf en gekla oor die haglike omstandighede en posisie waarin ons Vrystaatse dorpe se munisipaliteite al jare lank verkeer. Niemand, maar niemand, doen iets daaraan nie. Ek het al so ver gegaan om te probeer om die burgemeester te gaan spreek om vir hom my ondervindinge en raad aan te bied – sonder sukses.

Die verval van die Goudveld is een groot skreiende skande. Met ’n gees van blymoedigheid ry ons weg ná ’n besoek aan ’n pragtige natuurreservaat waar wilde diere rehabilitasie ondergaan. Ons ry deur Virginia terug na ons bestemming in Riebeeckstad. By die ingang na die Thabong-woonbuurt lê rou riool en maande se slyk en vrot water in die veld. Die water staan al vir langer as ses maande daar en die zama-zamas is sigbaar baie bedrywig. Hulle was hul klere in die vrot water, klein kindertjies baljaar in die gemors en hawelose honde dwaal in die veld rond. By die indraai na Riebeeckstad lê hope en nogmaals hope vullis in die veld. Dit is een helse gesondheidsrisiko en ek kan jou verseker,

Meneer die Premier, hier kom die uitbreek van ’n groot epidemie. Waar is al die gesondheidsinspekteurs van die munisipaliteit? Bestaan daar nog só ’n belangrike departement of kry hierdie mense elke maand hul salarisse om maar net agteroor te sit en te kyk hoe ons eens pragtige Goudveld in riool, vullis en rommel versmoor? Ace Magashule, jy moet kom kyk wat hier in die Goudveld aangaan. Ons, die belastingbetalers, is nou regtig keelvol vir die toestande in ons gemeenskap. Wat is jou modus operandi? Hoekom word daar geen aandag aan ons talle vrae gegee nie? Hoekom is daar soveel kinkels in die instandhouding-kabel? Daar is geweldig baie werkers aangestel om toe te sien dat ons dorp skoongehou word, maar hulle drentel in groepe rond. Ek is bereid om my dienste aan te bied as dit enigsins ’n verskil kan maak.

Vrae oor heining, advertensiebord Bekommerde belastingbetaler, Welkom: Geagte burgemeester, Nkosinjane Speelman, graag wil ek van u die volgende verneem: Wie het goedkeuring gegee vir die omheining van die munisipale geboue en wat is die koste daaraan verbonde? Die heining is opgerig sonder enige tenderprosedure en is nooit op enige raadsvergadering bespreek nie. U het inwoners belowe dat alle werk deur plaaslike kontrakteurs gedoen sou word en nou moet ons verneem die kontrakteur wat die munisipale geboue omhein, is van Gauteng.

Dan, die advertensiebord in die middel van Stateway, Welkom (waarop ’n mens in die dag absoluut niks kan sien nie), kos die munisipaliteit R5,5 miljoen. Wie gaan daarop adverteer, wie het besluit die bord moet opgerig word en waar is die tenderdokumente vir die advertensiebord? Wie is die gelukkige persoon wat die advertensiebord teen daardie prys kon oprig? Hoekom weet niemand by die opposisiepartye van die advertensiebord nie? Die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit kan nie eens Sars of skuldeisers betaal nie, maar daar word willekeurig geld op sulke onnodighede spandeer.

Of is dit baantjies vir boeties en wie kry dié keer die “kickback” en finansiële beloning soos dit maar gaan met groot tenders en maatjies wat werk vir die munisipaliteit? Dit is tyd dat die opposisiepartye aansoek doen dat projekte wat sonder tenderdokumente plaasvind, verwyder word. Dalk moet hulle aandring op ’n interne ondersoek deur iemand soos Gerrie Nel om die korrupsie te bekamp? Nel moet kom kyk wat hier in Matjhabeng aangaan. Of moet ons wat weet die inwoners van die Goudveld in kennis stel waarmee julle besig is?

Rock and roll in Welkom After more than eight successful years in the music industry, Saarkie certainly needs no introduction. Sibbe swaai die hamer Die hamergooi-kampioene van Welkom-Gimnasium is broer en suster en hulle skitter op die atletiekveld. Albei is vanjaar op die jaarlikse prysuitdeling in hul onderskeie ouderdomsgroepe as beste atlete aangewys. Pieter-Juan Vorstman, wat tans in gr. 9 is, is op Welkom-Gimnasium se jaarlikse prysuitdeling as die beste junior seunsatleet aangewys. Sy suster, Hanli, wat in gr. 11 is, het die eerbewys as beste senior meisiesatleet ontvang en is as sportvrou van die jaar aangewys. Dié twee is uitmuntende atlete en blink in hamergooi uit. Hulle het albei vanjaar verskeie rekords laat spat. Op die Diamantveld-atletiek-uitnodigingsbyeenkoms wat in Februarie in Kimberley aangebied is, het albei nuwe rekords opgestel en trofeë vir die beste veld-atlete ontvang. Hanli het ook die trofee vir die algehele wenner van die byeenkoms ontvang. Sy is sedert 2014 ’n leerling aan Welkom-Gimnasium en is sedertdien elke jaar in die Vrystaat-atletiekspan ingesluit. Die internasionaal bekend de langasem Louis Massyn wat die New York-marathon oor 42 km in 4:00:51 voltooi het, het ho om deeglik misgis toe hy gedin nk het hy word deur duisende mense e toegejuig omdat hy sy Comrades s 45-frokkie aangehad het en die Suiid-Afrikaanse vlag laat wapper hett. Die luide toejuiging was to oe omdat hy ’n sponsmussie, wat soos die kroon van die Statue of Liberrty lyk, opgehad het. Die toesko ouers het gedink hy dra die kroon ter t ere van die d stand dbeeld. Lo ouis (67) se gevleuelg de voete v mik nou in die rigting van die Boston-

marathon. Hy het reeds aansoek gedoen om deel te neem, maar weet nog nie of hy aanvaar is nie. Tussen 30 000 en 45 000 atlete neem gewoonlik aan hierdie marathon deel. Dié marathon word weer in April 2018 in Amerika gehardloop en is die oudste marathon ter wêreld. Louis, ’n boorling van Odendaalrus wat al 45 Comrades-marathons voltooi het, asook 43 Twee Oseane, sê die New York City-marathon van 5 November was ’n belewenis wat hy nooit sal vergeet nie. “Om saam met derduisende atlete van 125 lande weg te spring, was onvergeetlik. Altesaam 50 640 langasems het deelgeneem. Net dié wat binne ses-en-’n-half-uur klaar gemaak het, het medaljes ontvang. “Ons het op drie vlakke op verskillende tye weggespring en later weer by mekaar aangesluit. “Ons het deur tonnels toeskouers gehardloop en tyd gemaak om langs die pad te stop om saam met orkeste

Daar was ook ’n artikel oor Louis in die New York Times. Die inligting is deur sy vriend en borg, Kobus Mouton, ingestuur. Die Suid-Afrikaanse vlag het hy by die 21-myl-merk by ’n Facebookvriendin, Emily Littman, gekry. Dié Amerikaner het die vlag in Suid-Afrika gekoop. “Ek wil graag vir almal dankie sê wat vir my gelukwensings gestuur het,” sê Louis.
