Hani Park forgotten forgotten Joanie Bergh
THE residents of Hani Park followed Vista through the gravel roads like one man. The crowd of young and old desperately want to believe this time something will happen that will bring forth the change for wich they have been waiting for years. Since 1994, the old Hani Park has never had water, electricity or a proper sewerage system. The settlement originated when the municipality moved 400 families from Thabang into Hani Park temporarily until there was appropriate land to start a proper settlement. Today, 18 years later, the residents are still waiting for proper housing. Although the surroun-
ding areas were eventually supplied with these basic needs throughout the years, the pioneers of Hani Park are still using one communal tap on the side of the road for water. For more than 80 people this tap is their only source of water. Sekhotho Leerta, who is a hundred year old, has lived in Hani Park since it was established. Every morning she walks with a wheelbarrow to the communal tap for water. She has never used a toilet of her own. A hole in the ground is the only sewerage she knows, she has to cover it up when full. “I have lived here since 1994. And if I see now how nothing has changed since we’ve become a democratic republic, the fight against apartheid was useless,” she says.
Angry residents explained how they saw the electricity poles being erected around them, but when it came to their block they were “skipped”. “The municipality does f**ol,” says another resident, Teboho Ramaema. “This is Hani’s Park own Robben Island.” They are isolated and forgotten, apart from a modern society where everybody has the right to water and proper living. “Important people from the municipality and the province, they travel along the outskirts of Hani Park where there is electricity. But our area is hidden away from them. They don’t want to see us suffering.” The residents believe for as long
as people are living like this, crime in South Africa will never stop. A community leader showed Vista several letters of complaint that were sent to the mayor, Sibongile Gangelizwe. They asked him to help them with electricity, water, formal stands and proper roads. After several promises were made by the mayor, as well as Ace Magashule, the Free State premier, no one has responded to their cry for help. And while the 60-year-old Elizabeth Majoro stands in front of her shack, giving her grandchildren buckets to fetch water, she still hopes to see the day when she will have water of her own tap. “But it is like candy that drips on your lips,” she says, “you can see it, but you cannot have any.” – See more photos on p. 2.
