Die herrie is los oor ‘briewe’ Refilwe Mochoari IN ’n slegte nadraai het inwoners van die nedersetting Sewende Laan by Odendaalsrus uitsettingsbriewe ontvang twee dae nadat Mathabo Leeto, uitvoerende burgemeester van Lejweleputswa-munisipaliteit, aan hulle kospakkies gegee en huise beloof het. Net twee dae ná Leeto se besoek het die inwoners uitsettingsbriewe van die verhuurder, Almarie Stubbe, ontvang waarin hulle opdrag kry het om die nedersetting teen 4 Junie te verlaat. Inwoners het onmiddellik Leeto se kantoor besoek en aan haar gesê dat sy die enigste persoon is wat hulle kan help. Hulle het ’n memorandum aan Leeto oorhandig met ’n brief met 23 handtekeninge. Daarin word beskuldigings teen Stubbe gemaak. “Daar is baie mense en besighede wat geld, kos, klere en meubels aan alle inwoners van Sewende Laan skenk, maar Stubbe vat die meeste van die skenkings vir haarself, of sy verkoop dit.

“Sy het ons verplig om ’n kontrak te teken wat sê ons sal tussen R500 en R800 per maand betaal. As daar mense is wat nie die volledige bedrag kan betaal nie, word hulle uitgesit en prokureursbriewe word aan hulle oorhandig. Baie van die mense op hierdie nedersetting kan dit glad nie bekostig nie. In Sewende Laan word mense elke dag geïntimideer as Stubbe nie kry wat sy wil hê nie. “Daar is baie probleme in Sewende Laan en sedert die ANC se besoek hier het die situasie vererger. Die Stubbe-egpaar sê as ons ANC-lede word, sal ons onmiddellik uitgesit word,” het hulle in die brief aan Leeto gesê. Maar Leeto het die inwoners beloof dat hulle nie uitgesit sal word nie, want Sewende Laan behoort nie aan die Stubbe-familie nie. “Ons sal julle help. Niemand in Suid-Afrika kan so leef nie. Ons sal dit nie toelaat nie. Almarie kan nie mense so behandel nie. Wat sy doen, is uiters verkeerd. Harmony sê die grond behoort nie aan Stubbe nie, sy kan nie doen wat sy doen nie,” het Leeto gesê.

Saterdagmiddag is Stubbe uitgesit, maar sy het geweier om uit te gaan. Fatima Ismail, ’n weldoener van Odendaalsrus, het gesê die burgemeester het Stubbe laat weet dat sy nie meer die bestuurder van Sewende Laan kan wees nie, “want die plek hoort nie aan haar nie”. Sy het geweier om te gaan. Sy het gesê sy gaan alles wat aan haar behoort, saamneem as sy nie meer die plek bestuur nie. “Harmony het briewe aan haar geskryf om haar dienste te beëindig, maar sy wil nie gehoor gee daaraan nie,” sê Ismail. Stubbe sê dit is ’n leuen. “Ek was nog nooit uitgesit nie. Ek is steeds die bestuurder hier en ek is op die oomblik in die kombuis om kos vir mense te gee. Ek het die plek twee jaar gelede oorgeneem met die geld wat die mense vir my gee, koop ek kos en betaal water en elektrisiteit. Ek het nie aan almal uitsettingsbriewe gegee nie. WORK has started in earnest to renovate and resuscitate the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre after a fire damaged the stage almost two years ago. The grand opening of the theatre is planned to take place before Christmas. Dulcie Harris, theatre manager, says it has been a long and hard struggle to get to this point, but the project has received the green light. “We have been able to engage local contractors to do some of the work, but the specialised work will be given to contractors who work in that field. The final product will be brand new, but with a definite classical ambience,” says Harris. The programme that is planned for the opening of the theatre will be a grand affair incorporating opera, music, dance and drama. Local and national artists will be used, says Harris. They are the friendliest faces I have seen in a long while. Wow what an eye opener! I bought quite a few items, among which a few

DAAR word so baie geskryf, gekla en gemor oor die haglike omstandighede en posisie waarin ons Vrystaatse dorpe se munisipaliteite nou en al maande lank in verkeer. Niemand, niemand doen iets daaraan nie. Ek het al so ver gegaan om te probeer om die burgemeester te gaan spreek om vir haar my ondervinding en raad aan te bied – met geen sukses nie. Sy is nie beskikbaar vir die publiek in die geheel nie. Wat ’n jammerte – miskien kon my bydrae ’n verskil aan ons huidige omstandighede gemaak het. Daar is soveel tekortkominge wat net oor die hoof gesien word. Deur slegs te luister na een mens kan ’n reuseverskil maak – ons is in elk geval die mense wat moet betaal vir dienste nie gelewer nie. Ons het agt weke in die Oos- en Suid-Kaap getoer en baie dorpe en kusdorpies aangedoen. Van Keimond, net om een te noem, tot op Danabaai en vele ander was dit so lekker om hierdie skoon dorpe te besoek. Die strate en sypaadjies, die tuine en die

besighede is so skoon en netjies – jy kan net niks kry wat verkeerd is nie. Die antwoord wat ons gekry het: “Ons het die regte bestuur en die party in beheer van die dorp is baie besorg oor netheid – dit moet ’n absolute attraksie vir die toeriste wees.” Dit is hul modus operandi. Die dorpe se sypaadjies, parke, strate en om die skole is dit silwerskoon. Hierdie mense is werklik trots op hul dorpe en ek salueer elkeen van hulle daarvoor. Dit is so lekker om te gaan kuier en toer by plekke wat so daarna uitsien. Terug in die Vrystaat. Geen toesig word gehou nie. Ag nee, iets moet gedoen word hieraan – so kan dit nie aangaan nie. Ons verwag oorsese besoekers en is te skaam om vir hulle die dorp te gaan wys. Ek is ’n trotse Vrystater wat al 61 jaar op die Goudveld bly – dit is vir my bitter hartseer om te sien hoe ons Goudveld verval, veral as ’n mens so lief is vir die dorp en sy mense waarin jy bly. Mag reg en geregtigheid geskied met onmiddellike effek – die munisipale bestuur is dit aan elke belastingbetaler verskuldig.

A Biblical saying says: Teach a child in the way he should go because when he is old he will not deprive from it. What prompted me to write this letter is that many parents expect their children to be responsible adults when they grow up, but they don’t even know what is going on in their daily lives. If rules are broken, you have to enforce them and let them know why your are doing it. How many parents help their children with their homework, read them bedtime stories or follow their progress at school? In many households fathers come home late and drunk. Then they start abusing their wives in front of their kids. If you teach them violence, they grow up to be violent.

No one is born a police officer, domestic worker or a criminal. You start by stealing small. I am privileged to have a close-knit family where we eagerly opened the gate for our parents to come back from work. In reality I never saw my mother and father fight. All their problems were solved behind closed doors. I was taught to stand up and give my seat to an older person everywhere except in a plane where seats are booked according to name. While other children received toys and bicycles, we received Bibles. If I came home with a stolen toy, my parents would send me to give it back to their original owners. In a nutshell, let us teach our children and lead them by example. They are our future leaders. Always bear in mind charity begins at home.

Bankrowers kom weg met derduisende rande ’n GROEP van tien bankrowers het Dinsdagoggend met derduisende rande weggekom ná ’n waaghalsige rooftog by Ubank in Welkom waartydens die glasversperring in die bank met ’n hamer stukkend geslaan is. Hulle het met die geld ontvlug nadat hulle ’n veiligheidsbeampte oorval, vuurwapens rondgeswaai en almal in die bank beveel het om op die vloer te gaan lê. Terwyl hulle die wagte, kliënte en personeel van Ubank in Stateway met wapens aangehou en

gedreig het, het een van hulle die glasversperring op die toonbank met ’n hamer stukkend geslaan en oorgespring om die geld te kry. Al die beskikbare kontant agter die toonbank is gebuit voordat die groep weer die bank uit is en met twee motors weggejaag het. Kapt. Stephen Thakeng, woordvoerder van die polisie, sê ’n veiligheidsbeampte van die bank is net ná 09:00 buite die gebou deur drie mans oorval, met ’n vuurwapen gedreig, deursoek en die bank

ingedwing. Tussen die tien rowers, van wie sommige glo buite die bankgebou wag gestaan het, was daar minstens vier vuurwapens. Hulle het in ’n wit Toyota Hiluxbakkie met registrasienommer CD 36NB GP en ’n groen Kia-sedan met ’n Mpumalanga-registrasienommer gevlug. THE St Dominic’s Primary School children treated their mothers to a picnic for Mother’s Day. THIS is the eleventh year that Cell C’s project Take a Girl Child to Work is celebrated nationwide. The theme this year is Empower a girl, empower a nation. On 23 May ten Gr. 12 girls visited the SAPS Academy in Thabong. They are respectively from the Lebogang and Lenakeng High Schools. They were given the opportunity to experience, first-hand, the “world of work” within the public service sector. Section heads explained the different working environments such as training, human resource management and supply chain management. “Ek is afhanklik van ’n loopraam en kan nie eens motor bestuur nie. Die stilsit het my ondergekry.” Sy en haar twee susters, Chrissie Cloete en Barbara Wessels, het in Bloemfontein vir laslappieklasse by Issie Steenberg ingeskryf. Elsa se dogter Elbie Herbst van Bloemfontein het die laslappiekombers wat haar ma gemaak het, vir Issie gewys. Issie was baie beïndruk en Elbie het besluit: Skou toe met die kunswerk! Vir Elsa was dit ’n groot verrassing toe sy hoor sy het tweede gekom. “Daar was baie inskrywings en dis vir my ’n groot eer.” Die kwilt, wat op ’n dubbelbed pas, is geheel en al met die hand gemaak. Dit het Elsa sowat ’n jaar geneem om die kunswerk te voltooi. Elsa is lief vir handwerk. Sy hekel en brei graag en doen ook borduurwerk. “My hande moet altyd besig bly.”

’n EENS aktiewe vrou wat drie of vier keer ’n week rolbal gespeel het, se wêreld het feitlik in duie gestort toe sy haar heup gebreek het. Om te keer dat sy van verveeldheid krepeer, het sy besluit om laslappiewerk te begin doen. Die eindresultaat was ’n tweede prys op die Bloem-skou in Bloemfontein. Elsa Wentzel (69) van Harmonie op Virginia sê haar uiters lewendige Duitse herdershond wou speel en het haar per ongeluk omgespring. Haar heup was af en ’n pen is ingesit.

Illegal dumping THIS is what the situation is like at the back of the businesses in Long Road, including Mini Market. These businesses just dump their garbage anywhere. The law enforcement unit of the Matjhabeng Municipality has issued six summons against several businesses. Each of these amount to fines of R1 000. “We will continue to fine businesses in the CBD area who continue to transgress the by-laws. I would also like to thank the people who are continuously calling in to report transgressors like these,” says Bokvel Pietersen of the Matjhabeng law enforcement unit.

DANIEL WADE and Angels Boutique are holding the Welkom Western Festival to raise funds to help the Claws Animal Shelter on 1 June. THE Free State Provincial Heritage Authority (FSPRHA) has decided to declare the graves of a number of struggle heroes as heritage sites. They are Sipho Mutsi, Billy Mokobo, Ndoyisile Xhamfu and Vuyo Charles. Marge dankbaar oor hondekos Molly Green MARGE LÖTTER (71) is oorstelp oor die skenkings wat sy vir haar honde ontvang het. As dit nie vir die sakke hondekos was nie, weet sy nie wat sy sou gedoen het nie. Sy kan nie meer bekostig om haar tien “kinders” te voed nie en dit sou vir haar hartverskeurend gewees het indien hulle moes honger ly. Dewald Rouw, eienaar van ’n fabriek wat hondekos maak, sê hy het trane in sy oë gekry toe hy lees van dié vrou se opdraande stryd om haar honde se magies vol te hou. Hy het dadelik twee sakke Max Munchies by haar gaan aflaai en is bereid om weekliks kos daar te besorg. Marge sal hom bel sodra sy weer hondepille benodig. Skenkings is ook van lede van die publiek ontvang. “Ek weet nie hoe om vir almal dankie te

sê nie.” Vir dié diereliefhebber is haar honde haar lewe. Hulle is haar kinders. Hulle hou haar geselskap. Hulle gee haar liefde. Sonder hulle kan sy haar lewe nie voorstel nie. Sy sê haar kinders wil hê sy moet van die honde ontslae raak omdat sy dit nie kan bekostig om vir hulle kos te gee nie. “Al kry ek huise vir my ‘kinders’ sal hulle nie aanpas nie. Hulle is baie bederf,” sê dié vrou wat al deur diep waters gegaan het. Lötter, wat in die Welkomse woonbuurt Bedelia bly, sê sy het haar ma, Marie Breytenbach, sowat 11 jaar versorg. Sy is vroeër vanjaar dood. “My ma het aan Alzheimer se siekte gely en dit was soms moeilik om na haar om te sien. “Verlede Kersfees was ek en sy stoksielalleen. Al ander geselskap wat daar was, was my

honde. “Met my verjaardag en Moedersdag was dit net ek en die honde. Hulle is my maatjies en die meeste van die tyd my enigste geselskap,” vertel sy. “Elke hondjie het ’n naam. Van hulle is al oud en die een is blind, maar ’n mens sit nie net ’n dier uit omdat hy nie kan sien nie.” Lötter, ’n radiografis van beroep, het sowat vier jaar gelede afgetree. Sy het ’n gewas op die brein gehad en ’n paar maande gelede ’n beroerte gehad. Sy is blind in haar linkeroog en sukkel soms met haar balans.

Agt Goudveldse skole is reeds betrokke. Mariaan Lesch sê Equip for Life het reeds 33 lede. Die organisasie was aanvanklik deel van Famsa, maar het sowat 17 jaar gelede sy eie pad begin loop. Vrywilligers ontvang opleiding en opvoedkundige materiaal word verskaf. “Ons doen onder meer groepsberading met ’n klas vir ses maande. Indien nodig word kinders vir verdere berading verwys,” sê sy. Die vrywilligers het wyd uiteenlopende agtergronde. Sommige is gewone huisvroue, ander professionele vroue. Wat hulle wel in gemeen het, is ’n liefde vir kinders. Kursusse van drie dae oor persoonlike groei word ook drie keer ’n jaar aangebied.

Die stormloop is een van die hoogtepunte van die jaarlikse basaar. Dié basaar begin om 09:00 en sal tot 13:00 duur. Dr. Leon van Zyl, leraar, sê die tafels gaan onder lekkernye en handwerk kreun. “ ’n Feestelike atmosfeer gaan geskep word en niemand mag dit misloop nie.” Heelwat pret en pryse wag op die jongklomp. Onder die aktiwiteite wat aangebied word, is ’n meganiese bul, vuurpyl, springkasteel, skyfskiet, mini-gholf, gesigverf en koekieversiering. Basaarlekkernye soos kerrie-enrys, pannekoek, basaarpoeding, koek, lekkergoed, koeldrank, brood en beskuit, groente en handwerk van gehalte sal ook verkoop word. Een van die ander hoogtepunte van die basaar sal ’n vertoning deur die brandweer wees.

Uitstalling van modeltreine by skool ’n GROOT modeltreinbyeenkoms en -uitstalling vir alle modeltreinliefhebbers word Saterdag by die Laerskool Unie op Klerksdorp gehou. Die byeenkoms begin om 10:00. Vir elke ouderdomsgroep word voorsiening gemaak en verversings sal in die saal te koop wees. “Modeltreine, -huise en selfs klein boompies sal te sien wees en as jy voel om ‘n paar aan te koop is jy meer as welkom. Hy is ewe tuis agter ’n ramshoring as agter ’n trompet. Kosie, wat op Odendaalsrus woon, is op Stellenbosch gebore en het in die Paarl grootgeword. Hy was vier jaar oud toe hy mondfluitjie leer speel het. “My ma het besef ek is musikaal en feitlik elke geskenk wat sy vir my gekoop het, was ’n musiekinstrument.” Voordat hy hom in 1982 op Odendaalsrus gevestig het, het hy op Kroonstad in ’n musiekwinkel gewerk. Benewens die ramshoring en trekklavier speel hy ook onder meer die orrel, klawerbord, klavier, kitaar, banjo, verskillende soort harmonikas, ’n staalharp, boesoeki, marimba, trompie, ’n whistle chisel, wat hy self ontwerp het, fluit, konsertina, tromme, trompetbeuel, houtkornet, Franse horing, penniefluitjie, blokfluit, panfluit, xilofoon, saxofoon en tamboeryn. SHEQ Coordinator Laboratory The successful candidate will coordinate the analytical tests on raw materials, production samples, final products and water. Historic tour returns ‘Train insane’ THE 2013 Midas Historic Tour returns to Phakisa for its annual visit on Saturday. With over 130 entries and 14 races on the day the event promises a feast of racing for the local motorsport fans. Participating on the day will be sport cars, thundering V8’s, a large contingent of historic saloon cars, a variety of single seaters and a full field in the Lotus challenge. A 60 minute Springbok Series Endurance race will round off an exciting day’s racing at the Free State circuit. More than 50 cars will be competing in eight different classes in two eight lap races. Close racing is expected with full fields comprising various Alfa Romeos, Fords, Datsuns, BMWs, Mercedes-Benz and other historic saloon car marques fighting for class victory behind the fight for overall victory. The Sabat Lotus Challenge always provides close and exciting racing with a field of over 40 cars battling it out for overall and class victory. Klippies Krige and Glenton Rebello will be the most likely contenders for overall victory on the day.

SOME of the cars that will participate in the 2013 Midas Historic Tour at Phakisa. For many, the highlight of the day will be the Trans Africa Racing Pre 66 Legends of the 9 Hour Production Cars. The big V8 cars will do battle against the more nimble Alfa Romeo entries. A variety of entries make up the field and the sound of

the mighty V8s is reason enough to visit the race track on Saturday. Racing commences at 09:30. The spectator entry fee is R30 per adult, with children under 12 having free entrance. For more information visit www.phakisa.co.za.

CULLEN THOMAS (12) has been chosen as Vista’s Supersport Let’s Play Sport Star of the month for May. The young sports lover excels in swimming and biathlon. At the age of nine Cullen formed part of the Free State swimming team that competed at the South African Schools championships in Cape Town. In 2011 he competed at the Telkom SA level one championship in Kimberley and won one gold, four silver and two bronze medals. In 2012 he competed in the Telkom SA level two championships in Durban and won two gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Cullen went on to break seven Northern Free State records during the Telkom SA championships in Durban. At the Northern Free State prize giving Cullen was chosen as the best swimmer in his age group and obtained second place overall. In the Northern Free State schools gala in Kroonstad in February 2013, he won nine gold medals and two silver in the relay events. He was named victor ludorum. Cullen competed in the Midmar Mile in Howick that same month achieving 40th place. Cullen went on to compete at the Free State schools gala in Bloemfontein, winning gold in all five events. He was named victor ludorum, toge-

CULLEN THOMAS ther with two other boys. At the SA National level three championships in Durban in March, he qualified for 11 finals and won four gold, two silver and one bronze medals. Cullen is presently the national champion in his age group for the 50 m, 100 m, 200 m backstroke and 100 m free style. In his age group he lies in second place for the 50 m butterfly and 200 m freestyle, and in third place in the individual medley. At the SA biathlon championship in Oudtshoorn in March, he obtained an eighth place. In 2012 alone this swimming protégé competed in numerous galas and took home an astounding 89 gold, 35 silver and 22 bronze medals. He is currently in the top ten in the country. Cullen trains every morning before school and then in the afternoon and evening. He believes you train insane or remain the same.
