Die besetters van ’n boer van Virginia se plaas word nou deur ’n dringende tussentydse hofbevel van die Vrystaatse hooggeregshof verbied om enige van die boer se drie plase in die distrik te betree. Die besetters sê Nkosinjani Speelman, uitvoerende burgemeester van die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit, het hulle toestemming gegee. Honderde grondbesetters het Maandag (06/08) op Andries Pienaar se plaas Christiana probeer erwe uitmeet om daar te gaan woon. Luidens die bevele wat waarnemende regter Seef Hefer Dinsdagmiddag (07/08) gemaak het, word hulle verbied om enige van Pienaar se plase – Christiana, Dora en Mooiuitzig – sonder sy skriftelike toestemming te betree en te beset.
Hulle word ook verbied om op enige van die plase strukture op te rig. Pienaar sê in ’n hofverklaring dat daar teen Dinsdagoggend geen besetters op sy plaas was nie. “Die situasie kan egter enige oomblik verander. My ander eiendomme is ook in gevaar en ek het beskerming nodig. “Ek vrees nie net dat my eiendom beskadig sal word nie, maar ook vir my eie veiligheid en dié van my plaaswerkers.” Hy sê die gerugte dat ’n plaaslike politikus aan die inwoners van die Meloding-woonbuurt in Virginia gesê het die eiendom is vir ontwikkeling by hom gekoop, is onwaar. Dié politikus het glo gesê die mense kan die eiendom beset en erwe uitmeet. Van die inwoners het Dinsdag buite die Virginia-landdroshof, waar 11 van hul makkers verskyn het, gesê hulle gaan aanhou om die grond, wat langs
hul township is, te beset omdat Pienaar “ ’n ooreenkoms” met die munisipaliteit het. Die 11 het in die hof verskyn nadat hulle die vorige aand in hegtenis geneem is toe die polisie en honderde grondbesetters slaags geraak het. Volgens kol. Thandi Mbambo, provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder, is twee van die mense op borgtog van R500 elk vrygelaat. Die ander nege is egter borgtog geweier omdat hulle nie “hul nasionaliteit kon bewys nie.” Die verhoor is tot Dinsdag (14/08) vir aansoek om borgtog uitgestel. Sowat 500 mense het Maandagoggend die plaas beset en vir hulle erwe begin afmerk. Volgens die inwoners is ’n ooreenkoms met Pienaar in 2013 aangegaan. Hulle meen hy ontduik hulle sedertdien, en Seun Diphoko, nog ’n raadslid, het Sondag (05/08) gesê hulle kan vir hulle erwe uitlê. Sello Motsei, streekskoördineerder
en raadslid van die ANC, het buite die hof gesê hulle het nie self besluit om erwe uit te meet nie, maar dat Speelman en Diphoko gesê het hulle mag. Hulle soek die grond om huise te bou omdat daar te veel mense in die township is. “Ons wil nie baklei nie, ons is vreedsaam en gedissiplineerd. Ons wil saam met die polisie met hom oor die grond praat,” het Motsei gesê. “Hier is meer as 300 mense wat grond vir behuising nodig het. Ons gaan daar erwe uitlê en as daar nie genoeg is nie, gaan ons geduldig wag vir nog grond om beskikbaar te word.” Volgens die inwoners het die grondbesetting “niks met Julius Malema en die EFF of die ANC te doen nie”. Rapist jailed for 18 years A man from Wesselsbron was found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl, and has been sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment. Vandalism done by illegal miners (zama-zamas) has caused damages in excess of R800 million to the Matjhabeng sewer infrastructure, leaving thousands of residents literally knee deep in sewage. The functionality of a recently refurbished Witpan Water Waste Treatment Plant was severly affected after massive vandalism to this plant. The recent blockages at the Witpan, Theronia and T18 treatment plants have caused sewer spillages in several residential areas such as Thabong, St Helena and Bedelia in Welkom. The municipality has a 30 km line of sewerage network. “Repair work is done on a regular basis with municipal trucks with special equipment opening the blocked sewerage system following tampering by zama-zamas. The exercise is very costly and deprives citizens resources that could

improve service delivery,” said Thabiso Tsoaeli, municipal manager of Matjhabeng. Bronville experienced power outage for a week following a massive sewer spillage next to the Oppenheimer Park Bridge in Thabong and the theft of copper cables from the electrical substation which feeds the area.
“The sewer spillage was caused by blocked sewerage lines and manholes in the area. “Infrastructure employees removed large foreign objects such as stones, bricks, tyres, carpets, animal carcasses and sand bags from the sewer line network connecting Oppenheimer Park, Hani Park and Bronville.” Vandalism to the Bronville pump station costs Matjhabeng millions of rands. Tsoaeli says the municipality will be putting a grid along the Welkom sewer line to prevent the insertion of these foreign objects. The municipality has requested intervention from the provincial government and the national police ministry in dealing with the situation. “100 Years of Albertina Sisulu, Woman of Fortitude: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward".
I would like to extend warm greetings to the citizens of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, and especially to all women and girls on this important month in our history. South Africa has always been known for its strong women and their exceptional tenacity to face and conquer adverse situations and conditions. The 2018 National Women's Day on 9 August takes place during a significant year; the centenary celebration of two icons of our nation: the late Nelson Mandela, first democratically elected President of South Africa and the late Albertina Sisulu, a political activist and one of the most important leaders in the struggle of ensuring human rights for all South Africans. It is also the centenary year of the Bantu Women's League, a precursor to the ANC Women's League. We salute Charlotte Maxeke, the founder of the Bantu Women's League, a woman of substance who was a pioneer in many fields – science, education, missionary work, social work and leadership. Charlotte Maxeke led the first campaign against pass laws in Bloemfontein in the Free State, as early as 1913. The Free State Provincial government also honoured this heroine by renaming Maitland Street on which she led the march, as Charlotte Maxeke Street. Mama Sisulu played a pivotal role to bring about freedom and a society free
of poverty, inequality and racism. It is therefore befitting that on Women's Day we pay tribute to her and the many generations of women - influenced by her example - for their sacrifices, patriotism, hard work and commitment to bring democracy to all of us, black and white. She did not burdened herself with the boundaries cast upon women in her time. A nurse by profession, she was a nurturer and a human rights activist. Standing firm in unwavering support next to her husband, the late Walter Sisulu (1912-2003), she attended the first conference of the ANC Youth League where she was the only women present, for example. The history of Mama Sisulu's life is intertwined with the history of the struggle for equity and democracy in South Africa. The two cannot be divorced from each other. She took up the torch for freedom when others lost hope in the darkest hours of our country's history – as a woman, a mother and a visionary leader. In 1948 she joined the ANC Women's League and was one of the organizers of the historic anti-pass Women's March in 1956 and opposed inferior `Bantu' education. Her home in Orlando West in Soweto was used as a classroom for alternative education until a law was passed against it. Both Mama Sisulu and her husband were jailed several times for their political activities. She was also the first woman to be arrested by the Apartheid Security Police under new legislation. The Police was given the legislated power to hold suspects in detention for 90 days without charging them, and to make matters worse for her – the mother of a young child she was placed in solitary

confinement for almost 2 months while the Police was looking for her husband who went underground. He was subsequently caught and sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island. Constant harassment by the Police made a "normal" life impossible for her. She was put in solitary confinement again in 1981 and in 1985. She also suffered bannings and house arrests, but still managed to keep links between jailed members of the ANC and those in exile. A woman and a leader of her calibre and a character of her moral fibre could not be silenced, and as an elected leader of the United Democratic Front she brazenly and bravely met with British and American leaders experienced in the arena of international politics. Armed with only her convictions and passion for human rights, equity and democracy, she soon had them in her corner. In October 1989, the last restrictions on the Sisulu family were lifted and Walter was released from Robben Island. In 1994, Mama Sisulu served in the first democratically elected Parliament. She and her husband and son Zwelakhe have won numerous humanitarian awards. On the 2 June 2011 she died at her Linden home in Johannesburg, aged 92. National Women's Month, under the theme "100 Years of Albertina Sisulu, Woman of Fortitude: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward". pays homage to her and other women who daily face attacks on the freedom many lives were sacrificed for. Gender-based violence is one such a threat. As a community we must unite against all criminals who commit acts of genderbased violence and abuse against women and girls.

The holiday commemorates the national march of women on this day in 1956 to petition against legislation that required African persons to carry the 'pass'. The 'pass' was an identification document which restricted a black South African's freedom of movement under apartheid. The pass allowed them to enter 'white' areas. The 'pass' had come into force under the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1950. On August 9, 1956, 20,000 women staged a march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against proposed amendments to the act. They left petitions containing more than 100,000 signatures at Prime Minister J.G. Strijdom's office door. They stood silently outside his door for 30 minutes. The women then sang a protest song that was composed in honour of the occasion: Wathint'Abafazi Wathint'imbokodo! (Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.).

The campaign aims to get

The Sunflower Fund will also run its school competition. Blood diseases do not respect age, gender or race. The impacted patients cover a broad age spectrum and all race groups. Money raised through this campaign will offer the hope of life to patients in need of a life-saving blood stem cell transplant. All money raised goes towards recruiting donors for the Sunflower Fund’s blood stem cell registry. Financial contributions will also assist the fundraising efforts for the tissue-typing test costs and the patient support fund.

The Welkom Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the management of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Welkom organised an Imbizo where all stakeholders gathered to engage with the residents of Welkom at large. It took place in the Ferdie Meyer Hall in Welkom on 1 August. The Imbizo was organised by the Welkom CPF and the police in Welkom under the leadership of Brig. Disebo Cezula, and the chairperson of the CPF, Zack Rossouw. Crime pattern analysis, detection successes and new community projects (including CCTV cameras) were presented during the meeting. The sector managers were also introduced to the residents. The programme director was Capt. Stephen Thakeng. Past. Jackie Botes delivered a message of encouragement and a prayer to open the event. Capt. Marius Kramer presented a crime pattern analysis, talked about the hotspots in the area for crime and the recovery plan to address crime within the Welkom police station’s precinct. Residents were given an opportunity to raise their concerns about service delivery and their appreciation towards the men and women in uniform.
Col. Beaulah Seyaya, the commander of Welkom’s Visible Policing Unit, informed the residents on drug abuse awareness at schools, which will be conducted from time to time. She explained that the two approaches to this problem would entail a soft approach (when awareness campaigns will be done) and a hard approach (when learners will be searched). Learners who are found to be involved in criminal acts face the might of the law, said Seyaya. Maki Moorosi of the Liquor Board spoke about the procedure regarding liquor premises compliance to the law. He also talked about the kind of taverns closing at 04:00. Residents were given guidelines with regards to their concerns about taverns within residential areas. Rossouw requested residents to be involved in the Welkom community CCTV camera project, which will be activated in the Welkom CBD. He said especially business people must become involved in this project. Col. Christo van der Merwe presented the successes of the police’s Detective Services Unit in Welkom. He also talked about the latest technology which is used to assist in ensuring that perpetrators of crime face the might of the law because of concise evidence presented in the court of law.

Skilder is sielskos, glo Nicoleen Hugo (40), wat die afgelope nege jaar al ontspanning en uitdrukkingsvermoë in skilder as stokperdjie vind. “Ek was vas oortuig ek sal nooit eens ’n stokkie-mannetjie kon teken nie, totdat my pad met dié van Stephan van Heerden gekruis het,” sê Hugo. By hom het sy haar basiese kunsen skilderopleiding ontvang, en haar passie vir skilder het dadelik vlamgevat. Sy het al verskeie verftegnieke en fynere kunsies bemeester. Sy werk graag in olieverf en eksperimenteer ook met verskillende style. Hugo glo haar styl verander namate sy groei. Tans is haar werk baie feestelik en kleurvol. Rooi is oorheersend in haar werk te bespeur, en is ook haar gunstelingkleur. Sy reken om blomme op die doek te verewig gee haar ongekende genot, hoewel sy op aanvraag enigiets skilder. “Harde en intense musiek in die agtergrond is ’n moet, dit laat die verfkwas oor die esel sweef,” sê sy. Eenmaal per kwartaal berei die huiskomitee van die Silwerbron-sentrum vir bejaardes in Wesselsbron ’n heerlike ete vir die inwoners voor. Laat in Junie is die inwoners weer met só ’n ete trakteer, en die nuwe inwoners by die sentrum is ook verwelkom. Die name van die nuwe inwoners is uitgeroep, hulle is geblinddoek en moes toe ’n “donkie” se stert aan sy lyf vassteek. Laverna Coetzee was die enigste een wat die stert op sy plek vasgesteek het. Daarna is die inwoners in spanne van vier gedeel. Elkeen het ’n beurt gekry om na ’n geheuebord met verskillende
voorwerpe te kyk en binne ’n minuut alles wat hulle onthou het, op papier te skryf. Die wenspan was Hans Terblanché, Kotie du Toit, Nicolien Bezuidenhout en Marlene Jordaan. Van die 62 voorwerpe het hulle 29 reg gehad. “Dankie aan die huiskomitee. Jul tafels was pragtig, soos ook al die eetgoed op die tafels. Die kos was soos gewoonlik van hoogstaande gehalte. Ons het lekker gelag en gesels en ons sien uit na die volgende keer. “Dankie aan ons kombuispersoneellede wat ook gehelp het,” sê Marlene Jordaan, sentrumbestuurder.

Zamas destroy Municipal infrastructure -Citizens suffering in the processIllegal miners have left Matjhabeng Local Municipality with R800 million worth of damages in its sewer network. Executive Mayor Nkosinjani Speelman says the illegal miners, known as Zama Zamas, use sewer water to separate gold from gold bearing rocks. “Illegal miners are blocking the manhole with sand bags, stones and carpets so that they can redirect sewage water to their operations in order to process gold dust”, said Speelman. Speelman described the sewer spillages as calamitous and needing collective support from all stakeholders. He was speaking during a high level meeting in Matjhabeng’s Mayoral Boardroom, recently. “The focus is very much on a collective approach to address the security issue around sewer pipe lines and specifically the blockage by Zama Zamas, assistance of the police to the Municipality in this regard, cooperation of industrialists on waste content disposed in the sewer systems as well as focused management of the plant”, he said. He said security officers guarding treatment plants are often threatened with heavy rifles by Zamas. “In one instance, they exchanged fire to fire with our security officers. It’s not good at all as they are also killing each other over terrains. The community has also been living in fear as Zama Zamas have been engaging in gun battles in their quest for territorial advantage. If I had powers I would say to them go underground take what you want but please don’t disturb citizens and our infrastructure,” said Speelman. Municipal Manager Thabiso Tsoaeli said the Matjhabeng Local Municipality has a 30 kilometre line of sewerage network. “The repair work is done on a regular basis with municipal trucks with special equipment unblocking sewerage system following tempering by Zamas. The exercise is very costly and deprives citizens resources that could improve service delivery”, he said. Bronville experienced power outage for a week following a massive sewer spillage next to the Oppenheimer Park Bridge in Thabong and the consequent theft of copper cables from the electrical substation which feeds the area. The sewer spillage was caused by blocked sewerage line and manholes in the area. Infrastructure employees removed large foreign objects such as stones, bricks, tyres, carpets, animal carcass and sand bags from the sewer line network connecting Oppenheimer Park, Hani Park and Bronville. The Bronville pump station has also been vandalised costing Matjhabeng millions of rands. The functionality of a recently refurbished Witpan Water Waste Treatment Plant has also been slowed down. Tsoaeli said they are planning to put a grid along the Welkom sewer line to prevent large particles like animal intestines, big pieces of animal fat, fabric materials which were

Women celebrated Women’s Day is a public holiday commemorating the famous march that 20 000 women took to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in 1956. The women marched in protest against the proposed amendments to the Urban Areas Act, known as “pass laws”, which required people designated as “black” by the South African government to apply for a travel pass just for travel within South Africa. The purpose of the amendment was to maintain segregation and control migrant labour. This was part of the general apartheid policy of the time. Women of all ethnic groups were outraged and indignant about these travel restrictions – and about apartheid in general. They petitioned the government to change these policies, stood silently in protest outside the capital complex for half an hour, and sang a song that included the now-famous words, “You strike the women, you strike a rock!” Leaders of the movement included Lilian Ngoyi, Sophia Williams, Rahima Moosa and Helen Joseph. They bravely risked arrest to promote real change, and their efforts eventually paid off. National Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1994, after democracy came to South Africa. A re-enactment of the march was made on its 50th anniversary, and many of the original marchers were
