Farm school neglected

GRATIS

Marti Will EIGHTY three pupils, four teachers and only one toilet. It sounds like a nightmare, but that is the situation at the Kalkvlakte Farm School at Whites. “We need sanitation, water, electricity and a fence around our portable school. We have been begging for this since 2010, but to no avail,” says the principal of the school, Mandla Ntlemeza. He has been fighting for the survival of his school since he became principal in 1997. The school accommodates eight grades ranging from gr. R to gr. 7. The school was established in 1972 and was formerly situated at the Harmony Piggery on the way to Hennenman. In 2004 it moved to the farm Goedbegin and in 2010 they moved to the old dart hall at the Whites Golf Club. The previous school buildings were situated in an open veld with a pit toilet and security. Two of the little girls were almost raped there. Ntlemeza says he has been fighting a losing battle with the Department of Education. At the Piggery he had his portable classrooms, no fence and one pit toilet. It was unsafe and far for the children to walk to school. Most of the pupils are from Whites. The department gave him permission to move the school on the condition that he should find his own land and structures. He managed to have the portable classrooms transported to Whites in December 2012. Matjhabeng has allocated the land where the classrooms are standing. “All I ask is for a proper fence, security, sanitation, water and electricity. Paving around the portable classrooms will be appreciated. “I can’t wait indefinitely for the Department of Education to assist us.” Because of the isolation of the school the children need access to a library and computers to enable a proper education. “It would be a blessing to have a small computer laboratory and a library at the school.” His greatest ambition, however, is to incorporate gr. 8 and gr. 9 learners into his school in order to give his pupils a proper grounding.

BRANDNEW uniforms, but the 83 pupils of the Kalkvlakte Farm School have no functional school structure to call their own. UNPROTECTED. These portable classrooms belong to the farm school Kalkvlakte which moved to the vicinity of Whites near Hennenman. Most of the children are from very poor backgrounds. The parents can’t afford the transport to Meloding and Hennenman where the nearest high schools are. The children, therefore, do not further their education after gr. 7. People who can help the school to become viable can contact Ntlemeza on 074-238-5837.
