Twee sonder heenkome Verpleegkundige ontferm haar oor paartjie op sypaadjie Molly Green OM uit ’n huis geskop te word en met jou karige besittings op ’n sypaadjie te sit is traumaties. Veral as dit koud is en jy geen ander heenkome het nie. Boonop is daar niemand wat jou kan help nie. Dit is wat met Ben Botha (33) en sy vriendin, Natalie Steyn (32), gebeur het. Hulle sê hulle was drie maande se huur agterstallig. Die eienaar van die huis in Burenstraat, Flamingopark, Welkom, het hulle die Vrydag gewaarsku: Betaal of . . . Maandag is hul besittings uitgedra en is hulle op die sypaadjie gestrand. Nie ver van die plek waar hulle in wind en weer gesit het nie was ’n taverne. “Ons was te bang om te slaap, want ons het nie geweet wanneer die mense ons goed gaan begin wegdra of ons aanrand nie,” sê Natalie. ’n Verpleegkundige van die MediClinic Welkom het haar Maandagaand oor die paartjie ontferm en vir hulle iets te ete en te drinke gevat. Sy het ook geld op Ben se selfoon gelaai en ’n veiligheidsmaatskappy gevra om deur die nag ’n draai daar te gaan maak. Ben het weens afdankings by die Marikanamyn naby Rustenburg sy werk verloor. “Ek soek oral werk, maar kry niks nie. Ons het geen ander heenkome nie. LUR, munisipale hoës in hof vir wanbestuur PRESIES tien jaar nadat ’n Welkomse ingenieur ’n klag van poging tot moord weens die wanbestuur van riool teen die bestuur van die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit by die hof ingedien het, het die hofsaak die week in Welkom begin. Dié bestuurslede het vier jaar gelede die eerste keer in die hof verskyn. Dr. Benny Malakoane, Vrystaatse LUR vir gesondheid en ’n vorige munisipale bestuurder van Matjhabeng, is een van die ses beskuldigdes. Koos Davel, ’n ingenieur wat in afval spesialiseer, het voor streeklanddros Johan Bosch getuig nie die polisie in Welkom of op Odendaalsrus wou in 2004 sy klag van oortredings van omgewingswette registreer nie, omdat dié oortredings nie op hul stelsel was nie. Hy het

toe ’n klag van poging tot moord ingedien. “Geskiedkundig is riool die grootste uitdaging van stede wêreldwyd. Ongesuiwerde riool is nie iets waarmee jy kan speel nie.” Davel het getuig hy het elke dag op pad na sy werk, waar hy met die goudmyne se rioolsuiweringsaanlegte te doen gehad het, by die Witpan-aanleg in Welkom verbygery. Hy het besef dit werk nie. By sy seun se skool het hy te hore gekom van sogenaamde rooi krane waaruit leerlinge nie mag drink nie. Dit was gesuiwerde rioolwater vir sportvelde en tuine. Dit het na rou riool geruik. Hy het dit verder ondersoek en besef die suiweringsaanleg in Welkom en op Odendaalsrus is heeltemal buite werking. “Rou riool is deur

kanale verby die suiweringsaanleg gepomp.” Op Odendaalsrus het dié rou riool in die Losdoringspruit beland. Tog was daar talle vee, waaronder melkkoeie, in die vlei. “Riool is die afskeiding van elke menslike wese en almal word daardeur geraak. Riool het nie status, kleur of ras nie. Riool het ’n drastiese invloed op alles in die omgewing. Patogene kan jare lank in die grond oorleef. Dit sit in die vleis en melk van beeste. Dit kan ernstige skade by mense veroorsaak. Dit lei tot tifus, cholera, E.coli, wurms en wurmeiers. “Ek het besef dat dié ongesuiwerde riool op skoolterreine en in parke en sypaadjies in die Goudveld uitgepomp word. Ek het die munisipale bestuurder gebel, maar sy sekretaresse het besluit dit is nie belangrik genoeg om met

hom daaroor te praat nie. “Ek het ’n brief geskryf en ontvangs daarvan is erken. Daar is beloof om dringend aandag aan die probleem te gee. Dit is nie gedoen nie en ek het strafregtelike klagte ingedien.” Die beskuldigdes, wat die betrokke tyd verskillende poste beklee het, is Johannes Motseki (waarnemende munisipale bestuurder), Malakoane (munisipale bestuurder), dr. Dimakatso Moorosi (waarnemende munisipale bestuurder), Maria Tshabangu, Sello Noniso en Vuyo Adonis. Hulle ontken skuld op die hoof- en alternatiewelike aanklagte van die besoedeling van waterbronne. Twee ander munisipale bestuurders wat ook aangekla was, Nkrumah Pitso en Thabo Pietersen, is intussen oorlede.

Hy het ook voorgestel dat water aangelê moet word om in die behoeftes van die diere te voorsien. ’n Voorstel om ’n munisipale skut in werking te stel is voorlopig aanvaar. Munisipale regulasies sal in werking gestel word. Nog ’n besluit wat

Blyspel in ‘nuwe’ teater JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT is die grootste musiekblyspel wat nog deur ’n skool in die Goudveld opgevoer is en is ook die heel eerste opvoering op die planke in die nuut opgeknapte Ernest Oppenheimerskouburg. Sowat 90 kinders, wat sangers van 10 laerskole insluit, neem aan die produksie deel. Die laerskool-sangers vorm die koor. Die eerste vertoning is reeds vanaand. Daar is drie vertonings en dit eindig Saterdagaand. Net die klank en beligting kos meer as R100 000. Met dié blyspel word die deure van die

Ernest Oppenheimer-teater in Welkom weer amptelik geopen nadat die teater in 2011 deur ’n brand beskadig is. Gerda Koekemoer, hoof van die musiekskool aan die Goudveld-Hoërskool, sê oudisies is nege maande gelede gehou. Die regte om Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat te kon opvoer, moes van die Dramatic Artistic and Literacy Rights Organisation (DALRO) verkry word. Die begroting vir die produksie is R200 000. Daarvan is sowat R100 000 vir oorhoofse klank en beligting. Die orkes bestaan uit 15 lede, onder wie 5 skoolkinders. Van die orkeslede is professore in musiek en lede van ’n simfonieorkes. Joseph is oorspronklik deur Andrew Lloyd Webber vir ’n skool in Engeland geskryf. Die oorspronklike stuk was net 20 minute lank. Die blyspel was egter so gewild dat dit in die 1980’s ’n volwaardige musiekblyspel geword het. Die lirieke is deur Tim Rice geskryf. Volgens Paul Sauer, hoof van die Goudveld-Hoërskool, is die musiekblyspel ’n hoogtepunt vir die gemeenskap en die prestasies getuig van ’n uiters professionele standaard.

ONCE again the Goldfields Hospice has received the good news that the US ambassador has granted them funding for another year. Out of about 1 000 applications they received nationwide, Goldfields Hospice was one of only eight lucky organisations to be approved in the Free State. “We are very thankful for this grant, which was given to us to use for our income-generating activities and purchasing of office equipment,” says Marli Young (general manager, Hospice). Baie gou was daar sowat 70 bokke en 17 beeste en die laaste twee weke ook sowat 40 skape. Al hierdie diere was van die begin af in ’n ondervoede

toestand. Die “bykos” wat bestaan het uit mieliereste is daar gaan afgooi (tot ergernis van die mense wat reeds daar woon aangesien al daardie blare en gemors in hul wonings ingewaai het) en was in elk geval geheel en al te min vir die aantal vee wat daar ingehok word. Daardie beeste het tot drie dae op kamp gestaan met slegs water (soms) tot hul beskikking. Betreffende die tekort aan “hande”, daar was genoeg “hande” om daardie onooglike strukture reg teen die wonings van die ander inwoners op te rig, dus is dit ’n patetiese verskoning. Rakende die beskikbare veld waar die diere moet voedsel vind. Van die sowat 38 ha waaruit die hele Flamingo-pangebied bestaan, is slegs sowat 24 ha veld. Let wel, nie weiveld nie, want daar is letterlik niks vir die diere om te vreet nie. In ag geneem die aantal diere is dit buitendien algehele oorbeweiding. Vra maar enige boer wat sy

Kadwa is al ’n boete opgelê van oor die R30 000 vir sy vee binne daardie gebied. (Wonder of dit al betaal is?) Nee wat, Meneer, bly liewer by die besigheid wat jy goed kan doen. Los boerdery vir dié wat weet wat hulle doen. En gaan boer op ’n plek wat rêrig en wettig joune is. Respekteer die mense wat reeds daar woon en vat weg daardie stink bokkamp en vuil vlieë wat deur jou onwettige toedoen die omgewing daar besoedel.

SA Queen of Friends coming to Goldfields

THE Queen of Africa Fashion Show, annually presented by the Yvette Basel School of Modelling, will take an exciting turn this year, incorporating the national crowning of the Commonwealth 2013-’14 South African Queen of Friends and South African King of Africa. Alida Pretorius, a finalist for the Queen of Friends, said she was surprised after she had been selected for the prestigious pageant. When she heard that the organisers had decided to bring the coronation event to Welkom it took her breath away. “I was stunned when the organiser of the national pageant, Tina-Bella van der Merwe, told me she had decided to bring the pageant to the Goldfields,” said Alida. The fashion show and pageant will take place at the Goldfields Casino on 19 October,

and the dress code is formal. Tickets cost R150 and include light snacks. A cash bar will be available. “We have decided to donate a percentage of the ticket sales to the title winners to cover some of their travelling expenses when they have to attend the international finals in London. We’ll also be donating money to Claws and the Welriedal Youth Centre in Riebeeckstad.” Fabulous fashionistas and socialites from all over South Africa will be attending the gala event in Welkom, firmly placing the city on the country’s social map. Adding to the glitz and glamour of the evening, the models from Yvette’s School of Modelling will be showcasing exciting African creations by local designers.

Harmony-slimmes van die eerste water wen Molly Green TWEE gr. 11-leerlinge aan die Hoërskool Harmony op Virginia, Pule Liatile en Mawethu Ndiki, is die algehele wenners van die nasionale Eskom-ekspo vir Jong Wetenskaplikes wat by die Birchwood-hotel-en-konferensiesentrum in Boksburg gehou is. Hul projek getiteld The Mechanics of a Falling Water Droplet is in die fisika-afdeling ingeskryf. Hulle het ’n waterdruppel wat van hoogtes van 10 cm tot 60 cm in water val (in 2,5 cm-toename, dus elke keer met ’n toename in hoogte van 2,5 cm) deur middel van video-analise bestudeer en daarna ’n korrelasie probeer kry tussen die diepte van die “krater” wat vorm en die terugstuiting-hoogte (rebound height) wat verkry word. Dit het hulle letterlik tientalle ure geneem om die analise te doen omdat tien herhalings van

elke hoogte af gedoen is en dit moeilik is om met Microsoft se Mediaplayer die presiese momentum te kry wanneer die krater vorm en wanneer die terugstuiting sy hoogtepunt bereik. Die pryse wat hulle gewen het, sluit in: ) Beste ontwikkelingsprojek (spesiale eerbewys). ) Beste projek van ’n plattelandse skool (spesiale eerbewys). ) Eerbewys van die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) vir die beste fisika-projek. can Youth Water Price (SAYWP). Mawethu het vanjaar dieselfde beurs gewen. Albei was Vrystaatse wenners van die SAYWP en het nasionaal deelgeneem. Altesaam 652 projekte is vanjaar vir die nasionale ekspo ingeskryf. Rebecca Motsunye, ook ’n leerling aan die Hoërskool Harmony (gr. 11), het ’n goue eerbewys in die omgewingstudie-afdeling (veranderinge) gewen en daarmee ’n beurs van R26 000 van die Universiteit van Pretoria (UP) se fakulteit natuurwetenskappe. Dit is die derde jaar agtereenvolgens dat Harmony dít vermag. In 2011 het Winston Mthabela (wat ook die INTEL ISEF in Amerika bygewoon het) dit gewen, in 2012 het Retsilisitsoe Monyake (wat die INTEL ISEF in Amerika bygewoon het en ’n vierde plek in die wiskunde-kategorie gewen het) gewen en vanjaar was dit Rebecca se beurt.

Rebecca Motsunye, also a gr. 11 learner of the Harmony High School, received gold for her project The identification of bio indicators in the Sand River water system in Virginia in the category Environmental Science: changes to the environment. She received a bursary valued at R26 000 from the University of Pretoria (UP). Gr. 11 learners Boipelo Poho and Mosele Thobatsi of Harmony High received a bronze medal for their project entitled Laser Thermometer in the category Physics, Astronomy and Space Science. Gold medals were also won by Mieke Lagendyk, Courtney Parsons, Tara Potgieter, Saschke van der Merwe and Lafras Fritz. Silver medals were won by Ishka Hildebrandt, Megan Papp, Inge and Caryn LloydEvans, Junior Bancram, Bianca Reyneke and Talita Schoonraad. Bronze medals were won by Charolize de Lange and Linandi de Lange, Carla de Klerk, Hugo van der Westhuizen and Tracey Clarke.

THE Welkom region did very well at the Eskom National Expo for Young Scientists that was held in Boksburg last week. The learners of six Goldfields schools competed against the best in the country and brought home six gold, six silver and five bronze medals. The Harmony High School in Virginia took top honours with two of their three projects entered by five learners. They brought home two golds and a bronze. Gr. 11 learners Pule Liatile and Mawethu Ndiki won the Eskom best overall project at the National Expo. They were the senior project winners and they received a trip overseas as one of the prizes for their project named The mechanics of a falling water droplet in the category Physics, Astronomy and Space Science. They also received bursaries worth R10 000 from the University of the Free State (UFS) for the best project in the Physics category and each girl received a laptop for the best project from an urban school.

Kinders stal mooigoed uit DIE Kids Carnival vir skole-entrepreneurs word vanjaar op 26 Oktober op die Kinder-enJeugsorgsentrum in Bloemfontein se speelterrein gehou. Een van die vernaamste doelwitte van dié groot entrepreneurskapprojek is om kinders te leer hoe om hul eie onderneming te bestuur. Die mark fokus op kinders, maar sluit ook skole en ouer-gemeenskappe in. Kids Carnival laat kinders hul produkte op ’n besige vlooimark verkoop terwyl hulle beoordeel word. Beoordelaars is op soek na die beste produk, die beste stalletjie en die beste verkoopspan. Kinders kan deelneem aan die Kids got Talent-talentkompetisie of selfs kyk wie die kroon sal dra vir Mej. Kids Carnival of Mnr. Sterkman. Die inskrywingsproses is eenvoudig. Al wat daar van jou vereis word, is om ’n inskrywingsvorm te voltooi, ’n sakeplan op te stel en dit aan die streekskoördineerder (Z PR) te stuur. Inskrywings is gratis vir die entrepreneurs-afdeling. Sodra jy in kennis gestel word dat jou idee goedgekeur is, kan jy na die Kids Carnival gaan en jou produkte op die vlooimark verkoop. In die verlede het kinders talle opwindende produkte soos kraletjie-armbande, handsakke, découpage-kerse, papiermâché-spaarvarkies, geverfde kussingoortreksels gemaak. Skenkings benodig DIE Sonskynprojek verkeer in ernstige nood. Alet Viljoen, projekbestuurder, sê sy versorg 100 gesinne, onder wie 66 kinders tussen die ouderdom van pasgebore en 18 jaar. Skenkings van somerklere, nie-bederfbare kos en enigiets anders wat tot nut kan wees, sal waardeer word. Viljoen sê daar is ook vier matriekmeisies. Skenkings in die vorm van koopbewyse kan aangewend word om vir hulle onderklere en toiletware te koop. “Deur die genade van God is die Sonskynprojek vanjaar 27 jaar op dreef. Ek het dit in 2006 na die Goudveld gebring,” sê Viljoen. “Ons leef en bedryf die projek van skenkings. Bye veroosaak drie honde se dood ’n SWERM Afrika-heuningbye wat Maandag in Bedelia deur honde versteur is, het amok gemaak en verskeie mense en diere is gesteek. Twee rottweilers en ’n klein hondjie van Elsa Douglas is dood. Sy is self verskeie keer gesteek en so ook ’n kollega wat haar kom help het. ’n Mediese beampte van ER24 is ook gesteek. Faan Swanepoel, haar buurman in wie se erf die bye nes gemaak het, het blikke vol gif op die bye in sy huis uitgespuit en is wonderbaarlik nie een keer gesteek nie. Sy malteser, Tekkies, het egter onder die bye deurgeloop. Faan sê een van Elsa se honde het oor die heining gespring na Tekkies toe. In die rondhardlopery is Elsa se hond onder ’n selonsroosbos in waar drie buitebande op-

mekaargestapel gestaan het. Toe die hond die bande omstamp, “het alle hel losgebars”. Faan sê Tekkies is ’n paar keer raakgesteek en ’n deel van die swerm bye is saam met hom die huis in. Daar het Faan blikke gif gespuit en agter die sifdeur probeer skuil. “Die bye het probeer om deur die sif by my uit te kom. Hulle het hulle disnis teen die sif gevlieg om in te kom.” Intussen is die grootste gedeelte van die swerm na Elsa se huis langsaan waar haar twee rottweilers getakel is. “Ek kon niks doen nie. Hier was miljoene bye die hele erf vol. Die arme honde het getjank, op die grond rondgerol en probeer weghardloop, maar vergeefs. Toe ek die hek probeer oopmaak, het hulle my begin

Faan sê hy het nooit agtergekom dat daar ’n swem bye onder die struik is nie, hoewel hy elke dag daar verbygeloop en -gery het. “Hulle moes nou onlangs daar ingetrek het. As ek die somer daar sou begin gras sny het, sou ek hulle seker gewaar het.”

Bedrog-verdagte gesoek ’n STERK moontlikheid bestaan dat die Valke ’n hooggeplaaste in munisipale en ANC-kringe in Welkom in hegtenis gaan neem. Dít gaan politieke skokgolwe veroorsaak. Die ondersoek van die Valke vorm deel van die opspraakwekkende ondersoek na beweerde bedrog van R13 miljoen, korrupsie en geldwassery in die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit. Die onregmatige toekenning van langtermynkontrakte vir die voorsiening van kantoortoerusting soos fotostaatmasjiene en telefone is by die ondersoek betrokke. Dr. Benny Malakoane, Vrystaatse LUR vir gesondheid, is vroeër saam met vyf ander mense op dié aanklagte in hegtenis geneem. Die jongste verdagte sou na verneem word slegs as staatsgetuie in die saak gedien het. Omdat sy weens beweerde nalatigheid nie die getuiedagvaarding gekry het en daarop gereageer het nie, het die Valke besluit dat genoeg getuienis teen haar bestaan om haar as beskuldigde aan te kla. Vista verneem betroubaar ’n dagvaarding vir haar inhegtenisneming is in Pretoria goedgekeur en na Welkom gefaks. Weens haar hoë pos is besluit om haar nie met net ’n kopie van die dagvaarding in hegtenis te neem nie. Bewerings word gemaak dat sy iewers op ’n plaas buite Welkom weggekruip het toe die Valke onlangs in Welkom was, sodat dié inhegtenisneming uitgestel kon word. Bewerings word ook gemaak dat daar uit hoë polisiekringe in die Vrystaat inmenging

was. Dit sou glo daarop neerkom dat sy glad nie in hegtenis geneem moet word nie, maar dat sy haar net op 29 November by die hof aanmeld om saam met die ander beskuldigdes te verskyn. Die ondersoekbeampte van die Valke moet nou glo self van Pretoria af kom om haar in hegtenis te neem en voor die hof te bring sodat haar saak tot November uitgestel kan word. Malakoane was ’n munisipale bestuurder van die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit toe dié beweerde ongerymdhede plaasgevind het. Vista verneem dié ondersoek gaan nog verskeie nuwe skokgolwe deur die Vrystaat stuur. Die ander beskuldigdes is L.B. de Bruyn (finansiële hoof van Matjhabeng), Leona Nel (De Bruyn se persoonlike assistent en verloofde), Oupa Molete (direkteur van Pole Adds), Hendrik Burger (uitvoerende hoof van Equipcell, handeldrywend as Gestetner Maluti) en Rudolf Kotze (assistent-direkteur). Gestetner Maluti is die sewende beskuldigde. Kapt. Paul Ramoloko, woordvoerder van die Valke, het nie die week op ’n navraag oor die nuwe verwikkelings gereageer nie. Hy het vroeër gesê benewens korrupsie, bedrog en geldwassery word oortredings van munisipale finansiële wette ook ondersoek. Hy sê die misdrywe, waarin groot bedrae omkoopgeld glo hande verwissel het, is tussen 2007 en 2010 gepleeg.

THE Mmabana Primary School in Wesselsbron closed the third term of the year with a celebration of Heritage Month. Here are Moleleki Maloka (school principal, in the middle) and his team. During this celebration different cultural groups like the Sotho, Tswana, Xhosa, Venda and Ndebele were represented by the staff, learners and parents through their attire and staple food that was served, and included umqusho, diretlo, motoho and dipabi. Different traditional dances (like mokgibo and umxhentsho), riddles and folklore were performed. The opening was done by the second deputy principal, Modupi Moseme, with a Sotho prayer, while Motsmai Khoposhane was the programme director.Photo: Supplied

SPCA holds walk, meeting THE Welkom SPCA will have its annual general meeting on 8 October. It will be held at the Goldfields Mall Centre Management Board Room at 19:00. Chameleon sing in Welkom

Musikant laat diep spore NEIL NACHTREIN is ’n kunstenaar wie se musiek en lirieke baie eerlik is. Hierdie boorling van die Vrystaatse Goudveld woon die afgelope jare in die 2013-Kwêladorp van die Jaar-wenner, Fouriesburg in die Oos-Vrystaat. Hy en sy familie besit en bedryf die Model-slaghuis op die dorp. Neil Nachtrein tree op Vrydag 11 Oktober om 19:30 in die Bekfluitjieteater in Welkom op. Die deure open om 18:00. Neil loop sedert hy in 2002 gematrikuleer het die pad van rock-’n-roll, hoewel daar ook elemente van blues en ander invloede in sy liedjies voorkom. Hy skryf al sy musiek en lirieke self. Om nie die hoofstroommusiekroete in Suid-Afrika te volg nie is beslis nie die maklike paadjie om te kies nie. Maar hierop is Neil goed voorberei en dit wys in sy harde werk en deursettingsvermoë die afgelope 11 jaar in die bedryf. Soos dit gewoonlik is, werp harde werk vrugte af, en dit is te sien in die groei wat hierdie kunstenaar die afgelope paar jaar getoon het.

In 2010 het Neil ook ’n volwaardige album, Gisters en Blisters, opgeneem saam met die hoog aangeskrewe vervaardiger John Buckley, wat onder andere ook saam met Jan Blohm gewerk het. Die album is op sy optredes te koop. Neil is ook al hoe meer in aanvraag om in van die bekendste en gewildste teaters in die land op te tree. Hy het al onder meer opgetree in die Aasvoëlklub in Bloemfontein, Asbos-teater in Pretoria, Shinkshack op Bronkhorstspruit, Firkin in Centurion, Vryfees in Bloemfontein, Kersiefees op Ficksburg, die Bloemfontein-skou en verskeie ander feeste en geleenthede. Hy tree soms solo op, maar ook saam met sy orkes. Neil se loopbaan bou voortdurend meer momentum op en hy is besig om al hoe dieper spore te laat in die opwaartse kurwe waarin hy hom tans bevind. Dit is daarom die moeite werd om sy vertonings by te woon. Some we hear of through books and the various forms of media we have today. You get different types of adventurers, those with big budgets performing daring feats or incredible journeys. Gregory David Robert doesn’t fit into that category. Arriving in Mumbai, India, on a false passport with very little money he tells us of his sometimes incredible experiences and highs and lows during the eight years he spent in Asia. After escaping from prison in Australia he flew to India where his adventures just didn’t stop. Gregory brings to life his experiences with intricate portrayals of the people he met. An exotic array of characters from untouchables to Pakistani gunrunners and of course beautiful women. The book is largely set in the city of Mumbai which Gregory gets to know intimately. Amongst other places he also journeyed as far as Afghanistan through Pakistan largely on horseback through hostile territories and not through any recognized border posts. His graphic description of his time in an Indian prison and involvement with the Mumbai mafia and Bollywood film industry are all portrayed in a fast-paced, yet sensitive and sometimes humorous manner makes for good reading.

A highly motivated self-starter with good leadership and management skills will be our ideal candidate. A GDE in Mineral Resource Management, knowledge of geological modeling (including wire framing) and practical experience in managing Brownfields exploration programmes would be advantageous, as would knowledge of geostatistics and evaluation procedures. Potspel inspireer parapleeg Molly Green HANNES BOTHMA (53), ’n Welkomse parapleeg, het die Suid-Afrikaanse negebal-potspelkompetisie vir gestremdes in Johannesburg gewen. Hy is een van ses Suid-Afrikaners wat in November aan die wêreldkampioenskappe by Gold Reef City gaan deelneem. Hannes is die enigste gestremde lid van die Kokkerotte, die Noord-Vrystaatse kampioenspan. Wanneer hy aan potspel vir gestremdes deelneem, is die ander vier lede van die Kokkerotte aan sy sy om hom te ondersteun. Hannes, wat in Welkom by Mr Clean gewerk het, is sowat 16 jaar gelede op pad na Witbank gekaap. Die rowers het hom geskiet en hy is sedertdien verlam. Ná die traumatiese ervaring het hy ernstig potspel begin speel. “Dit hou my besig en dit inspireer my om teen normale mense te speel.” Hannes het in 2010 Springbokkleure vir agtbal-potspel verwerf. Hy is gekies vir die SuidAfrikaanse span wat in Engeland aan die wêreldkampioenskappe sou deelneem. “Dit was egter te duur om te gaan. Net die vliegkaartjies het R36 000 per persoon gekos.” Hy sê hy was nog nooit oorsee nie en hy sal nie nee sê as die geleentheid hom voordoen nie.

Griffons kon verbeter Molly Green DIE Griffons kan net hulself verkwalik dat hulle nie die laaste wedstryd van die seisoen teen die Boland-Kavaliers gewen het nie. Die Perstruie het in dié Eersteliga-kragmeting van die Curriebeker in ’n stadium met 26 punte teen 12 voorgeloop. Op die ou end moes die Noord-Vrystaters met ’n gelykoptelling van 26 punte elk tevrede wees. Die les wat hieruit geleer behoort te word, is om nooit in ’n wedstryd te laat slaplê nie. Daar was nie veel vir albei spanne op die spel nie, maar die Griffons vir groot dele van die wedstryd veglustig gelyk. Hulle het aanvallend gespeel en goeie balbesit gehad. Teen rustyd het hulle met 14-5 voorgeloop. Hulle

was in die eerste uur beslis die beter span. Die Kavaliers het in die laaste 20 minute van die wedstryd wakker geskrik en die bal met mening rond gegooi en punte aangeteken. Die Kavaliers het in die laaste tien minute van die wedstryd twee drieë gaan druk. Japie Nel, die sterk binnesenter van die Griffons, het weer ’n goeie wedstryd gehad en twee van sy span se drieë die aanvoorwerk gedoen en self ’n drie gedruk. Die ander driedrukkers van die Griffons was Martin Sithole, Norman Nelson en Joubert Engelbrecht. Franna du Toit het met drie doelskoppe geslaag. Vir die Kavaliers het Brendon April drie drieë en Rossouw Kruger een drie gedruk. Eric Zana het met drie doelskoppe geslaag.
