Summit a huge success

Positive feedback for ideas to eradicate poverty, equality Refilwe Mochoari AN economic growth summit to reduce the 37% unemployment rate in the Matjhabeng Municipality was seen as a success. This is according to Sebenzile Ngangelizwe, the executive mayor of Matjhabeng. The two-day summit that took place at the Ferdie Meyer Hall in Welkom last week under the theme Creating economic growth through the green economy focused on the the mining and agricultural sectors on which the province is dependant. It served as an opportunity and platform to, amongst others, chart a new path by diversifying the local economic landscape in order to create a platform to the development of a local economic strategy and to enable the municipality to drive social and community development in its area of jurisdiction and to present opportunities and attract investment in order to stimulate economic growth, reduce poverty and inequality. Ngangelizwe said the main aim of the

ment in our region. We have invited businesspeople and the community, together with officials from Seda and the Department of Trade and Industry, to share ideas on the eradication of unemployment. “We believe by inviting owners of busines-

ses we can come to a conclusion on how businesses can be developed to employ more people. In its simplest expression a green economy growth and income and employment should be driven by the public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency as well as to prevent the loss of biodiversity.” Some business owners who attended the summit said they were also happy to be part of the initiative. Kgotso Mokhandi, owner of the Emarauda security company, says: “What is good about the summit is that it is giving us as businesspeople a platform to share ideas and come to a resolution and serving our aim of reducing unemployment in the region.” Lehlohonolo Dlamini, an emerging entrepreneur in Welkom, says he is happy with the summit, but it is worrying that there are all these opportunities that arise, but they are not easily accessable. Arthur Holland of Sibanye Gold said the summit was overdue.
