Stripped to the bone Businessman’s property carried away piece by piece Marti Will “WE are heading towards becoming another Zimbabwe, but with a slight difference. In South Africa, instead of just being forced, or told, to vacate our land or premises, we are now terrorised with break-ins and looting until we have no more courage to carry on doing business or to even try and salvage anything of our lives. “Up until November 2013 I was the proud owner of a business in the industrial area of Virginia,” says Evert Demmer, a prominent Welkom businessman, who also owns what is left of CJN Scrap Metals in Virginia. Demmer’s business has since 13 November been systematically broken into and his property carried away in front of his eyes. In October and November the factory next to CJN Scrap Metal in Westwood Road, Virginia, closed down and has since been stripped to the “bone” by looters. “Within six weeks there was nothing left of the building, including the two trucks inside. I estimate between 60 to a 100 people have been stripping this building on a daily basis,” says Demmer. In November the substation which supplies his business was blown up and the transformer damaged. “We use electronic scales and machinery. We have lost a lot of income because there is no electricity,” says Demmer. His alarm system had to be run off two car batteries. “I had to arrange with a security company to supply and change the batteries every two days. This was expensive and in December the two batteries were stolen.” When Demmer inquired at the municipality about the electrical supply, he was told by a female official: “I don’t know what or when anything will be done to rectify the matter. You had better buy yourself a generator.” “I am a rate payer, yet Matjhabeng cannot supply me with electricity,” says Demmer. When he spoke to a senior municipal official at the end of November he was told that they were rebuilding the transformer and that he would have electricity by the end of the week. When he phoned again on 28 November and spoke to the same man, he was told that the problem would be fixed the next week as people were on leave at that time. On 13 December, Demmer closed shop for the holidays at 13:40. By 14:00 criminals had broken into his premises and stolen the

Holes were chopped into three other walls in the other building, and the main entrance was forced open. On 30 December the alarm went off again. When Demmer arrived at the business he found that the police were there. The main garage door was wide open and all the tools, plasma cutter and a lot of steel and metal had been removed. The alarm was again damaged. Half of the roof of the store room (9 m IBR sheeting) had been removed. By Sunday, 5 January, the entire roof had been removed. Demmer says he does not want to close

After serious discussions they visited Virginia. All the looters in the adjacent property were arrested and Komphela has instructed the police to take further action. Kemp says the police, business and the security companies will now liaise to form a strategy. Looting suspects arrested SEVEN people have been arrested this week after causing chaos in Mothusi Road in Thabong. Riots took place on Monday and Tuesday when the road was barricated with bricks and burnt tires preventing motorists to drive on the road. Police spokesperson Malebo Khosana said the Thabong police with the assistance of the public order policing tactical response team intervened as the gathering turned violent. “A case of public violence was opened by Thabong police for incidents that occurred at about 18:00 on Monday. No one was arrested in this case. “The violence was stabilised at approximately 20:00 as groups dispersed. However some participants of the riots decided to attack and loot tuck shops. “A case of business robbery was opened after four suspects were found inside one of the tuck shops at approximately 21:30 with groceries.” The four suspects are aged 24, 28, 31 and 35 respectively. “The swift reaction of police

members averted what could have been a disaster. Among the nine shops that were attacked, five were only damaged, three looted and one was not damaged. “The housebreaking implements such as crow bars and bolt cutters were confiscated as the perpetrators fled from the shops they intended to loot.” On Tuesday suspects were arrested for the possession of suspected stolen goods. The three suspects were pushing a dust bin containing groceries in James Ngake Street. Mothusi Street was not accessible for motorists as the remains of the burnt tyres and stones were still on the road. “The road was later cleaned and the situation stabilized. The motive for the unrest rose from the unconfirmed claims that the mining houses in Goldfields have vacancies and the community felt youth from Thabong – and not other parts of the country – should be employed. “The situation was calm at the time of releasing this statement. “The suspects will appear at Welkom Magistrates’ Court in due course,” he said.

Just another SA citizen, Welkom: THE New South Africa is ruled with fear and chaos by individuals in traffic departments and the South African Police. I hope that all persons involved in the roadblock on 7 January at 08:00 between Kroonstad and Riebeeckstad are proud of what you have accomplished against citizens who care for safety on the road and for other people. You, the so-called authority, stripped my wife and me of our dignity. You assaulted us – not just verbally, I was also assaulted physically. You abused your power and forced us to delete evidence from our private cell phones. You threatened to lock us up if we didn’t adhere to your com-

mands. You treated us, fellow South African citizens, as enemies by POSBUS /P.O. BOX 1027 categorizing us as racists WELKOM 9460 and the kind of white people who want to cause trouble. This is the way that communism rules: Not with respect, but with fear and chaos. Thank God this all happened during the daylight hours, because if it were dark at that moment, I am sure we would not have left there with our own car but by ambulance. In future I hope all law-abiding citizens will not even bother to report wrongdoing so that we can see how many more people will die on the roads. We were only trying to report another motorist who was endangering the lives of others.

Tip-off leads to arrest of suspects FOUR suspects have been arrested after robbing a Pakistani business in Odendaalsrus Block 6 last week. A firearm, airtime and money were confiscated at the houses of the three men and one woman. Welkom Police spokesperson Capt. Stephen Thakeng said the police received a tipp-off after a business robbery in Kutloanong. Information was followed up by Capt. Moiloa Khothule and WO Muso Sello who went looking for the suspects. Three male suspects and one female were arrested in sundry Sections of Kutloanong. “During interrogation, it was discovered that the firearm used in the commission of the crime was hidden in a house at K9 section in Kutloanong,” Thakang said. While members were searching a house belonging to a sister of one of the suspects, a firearm, airtime and money were recovered and she was arrested. “All four suspects, ages between 27 and 37, are facing charges ranging from business robbery to unlawful possession of a firearm and are expected to appear at Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court soon,” Thakang said. The station commander of Odendaalsrus Police, Col. Disebo Cezula, applauded her members for a job well done. She also thanked the community of Odendaalsrus for coming forward with the information which led to the arrests and confiscation of the stolen items. Col. Cezula said that this was an indication that the residents of Odendaalrus are sick and tired of crimes committed in their residential area.

Red vanjaar ’n lewe Molly Green DIE Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens (SANBD) doen ’n beroep op inwoners van die streek om bloedskenking ’n Nuwejaarsvoorneme te maak. “Dit is ’n maklike voorneme om te maak en om daarby te hou. Bloedskenking red lewens,” lui ’n verklaring van die SANBD. Die plaaslike tak van die SANBD se doelwit is om vandeesmaand 935 eenhede in Welkom in te samel. Tot 9 Januarie is nog net 143 ingesamel. Dit is ’n tekort van bykans 800 eenhede, sê Alta Pienaar van die SANBD. Om ’n eenheid bloed te skenk neem sowat ’n uur en kan tot drie mense se lewe help red. “Die skenkingsproses is eenvoudig. Voornemende skenkers moet ’n vraelys oor hul gesondheid en leefstyl voltooi. Jou bloeddruk word geneem, asook ’n druppel bloed om seker te maak jy is nie anemies nie en dat dit veilig is om te skenk. “ ’n Gekwalifiseerde suster sal ’n kort onderhoud met jou voer en as alles reg is, word jou skenking geneem. Naalde en toerusting word slegs een maal gebruik en dan vernietig. Ná jou skenking geniet jy koekies en koeldrank,” sê Pienaar. Daagliks moet 3 000 eenhede bloed ingesamel word om aan hospitale in Suid-Afrika te verskaf. Die behoefte aan bloed is deurlopend – daar vind elke 35 sekondes ’n bloedoortapping

in Suid-Afrika plaas. “Daar is baie mense wat nog nooit bloed geskenk het nie, of lank gelede geskenk het, en ons vra dat hulle gereelde bloedskenking deel van hul lewe maak. Moenie dat die lewe in die pad van lewe staan nie,” sê Irene van Schalkwyk, bemarkingskonsultant by die SANBD. Om bloed te skenk moet jy: ) Tussen die ouderdom van 16 en 65 wees. ) Meer as 50 kg weeg. ) ’n Veilige seksuele lewenswyse volg. ) Gesond wees op die dag van jou skenking. ) ’n Maaltyd genuttig het voordat jy bloed skenk. Born in South Africa in January 1924, Marie went on to become an avid sportswoman and great student during her high school years. She joined the military secretarial division during World War 2. Marie met the love of her life, Boet von Plaster, and in the early 1940’s moved to (what was then known as) Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Returning home in 1965, she settled with her family in Welkom where she has been for the last 49 years. Marie continues to be part of the VLU community and is their oldest active member. She is well known for her flower arranging creativity and expertise,

Cansa honours, remembers with relay Molly Green CANSA WELKOM is hosting the next Relay For Life on Saturday, 8 February. Relay For Life is an overnight event during which Cansa celebrates with cancer survivors and remember those who lost their battle against cancer. It is also a fundraiser to help Cansa with research, to educate the community in early detection and to support families affected by cancer. The relay on 8 February will be from Saturday evening till Sunday morning and will be a closed event for entered teams only. There is space for 50 teams. A team consists of 10 to 15 members, with a team captain, who walks a track for 12 hours. Teams are given a designated area where

they can camp for the night. Teams may brand the camp site and bring along a gazebo, sleeping bags and camping chairs. Participants can choose a team name and dress according to a theme. Each team must have a positive cancer message and this must be visible at the camp. The registration fee is R500 and teams are asked to do fund-raising as well. Cansa pleads with teams to try to raise R3 000 as part of the whole fund-raising initiative. Companies that sponsor their team’s funds can be issued with a 18A tax relief certificate. On the night of the relay teams are asked to run a stall where you can sell food, beverages or anything else to keep teams

On registration teams will receive ten luminaria (“celebrate and remember”) bags that can be handed out to family or friends. These bags can be decorated. The bag with their loved one’s name and the bags must be back at Cansa by 1 February. Bags are on sale at Cansa for R10. The bags have a very special place at the relay. They represent a loved one and will contain a candle that is lit during the luminaria ceremony and light the track. HEAVY rain and thunderstorms did not prevent members of the Sand River Golf Club to raise R100 000 for the Virginia SPCA in a golf competition. This annual prestigious event was made possible by AED Mining Supplies and Norman Relining Services. Richard Martin, manager of the SPCA in Virginia, said without the annual golf competition, as well as the help of the Harmony Gold Mining Company, the local SPCA would not have been able to carry on with their work. Niki Norman, co-owner of the two companies, is the mastermind behind this annual fundraiser for the orphaned animals. Her love for animals and constant dedication to do something worthy for the local SPCA has made it possible that, once again, a cheque for R100 000 was handed over to the SPCA team. “The Virginia SPCA is really an inspiration and worth visiting. The animals get five-star treatment and extreme efforts are made to make our four-legged friends’ lives as comfortable as humanly possible,” said Linda Oelfzee, a member of the Sand River Golf Club. She stressed that Martin goes out of his way to find good homes for his orphans and will always have the history of each animal on hand. “He is quick to inform when a cat is not a dog lover and when dogs do not like cats. Their response to help find strays on the roads and in getting to injured animals is of vital importance,” she said. Norman, also manager at the Sandriver Golf Club, made such an impression with her speech regarding help for the SPCA that the Beatrix Mine added another R5 000. Therefore R105 000 was eventually handed to Thea Smit, chairperson of the SPCA. Smit and her team thanked the club for their support.

THE Round Table clubs Welkom 40 and Goldfields 204 made a big difference in the life of the Delta Flats community in Odendaalsrus. On 23 December Welkom 40 and Goldfields 204 worked together with The Power of One (NPO) and donated R5 000 worth of groceries to the residents. For most of them the food parcels could not have come at a better time. The contents of the parcels varied from fresh vegetables to canned goods. Igor Scheurkogel, the leader of The Power of One, says: “The people’s faces were full of gratitude for what Round Table did for them. Now they could also enjoy the festive season with a warm heart.” Furthermore, Scheurkogel requested that the broader community of Matjhabeng open their heart for this community so that their flats could be fixed and that 2014 would be a prosperous one for the people of the Delta Flats. FOURLEGGED FRIENDS IN NEED CLAWS in Welkom was inundated with strays over the festive season. Pictured top from left is a boerboel male puppy of about 9 weeks old. He has a lovely playful nature and needs a family who wants him as a friend. Next is a Scotty, a male puppy of about 10 weeks old. He loves to sleep on a pillow next to the bed, and likes playing with children. He would make a wonderful family pet. Then there is one of two little Dachshund (worsie) pups, one male and one female. THESE are only a few of the many orphans up for adoption at Virginia SPCA. “Strange how after the holidays and festive season so many people simply give up on their furry family,” said Thea Smit of the SPCA. The Virginia SPCA has many dogs, puppies, cats and kittens up for adoption. Sadly what was called the holidays and festive season for humans became a season of sadness for many animals that were simply given up or left behind. Cop accused of burning cousin Refilwe Mochoari A police officer accused of burning and assaulting a 17 year old girl in Odendaalsrus in Kutlwanong is still reporting for duty. Const Maditaba Lebeko, stationed at Thabong Organised Crime Unit, allegedly attacked her 17 year old cousin. Lebeko accused her cousin Selloane Maretele of stealing R200 in her bedroom. Vista visited Selloane for an explanation of what led to the attack. “It was the morning of 26 December last year when Lebeko asked me to clean her bedroom. I did what she asked me to do and left. “While I was visiting my friend on that day, she gave me a call telling me to immediately come back home as her money is missing. “I did go back home as she instructed me. When I arrived, without asking me anything she started beating me up with brooms and stones. With the help of two

of her friends, she dragged me to her backroom and locked the burglar gate, closed all the windows and locked the door. “I started screaming for help, to no avail as doors were locked. She asked one of her friends to plug the iron (into the electrical socket) on the wall so she could burn and scar me for life. “When she said that, I thought she was playing – but I received the shock of my life when she started to place the burning hot iron om my body. She started with my thighs and then moved to my face. “She kept shouting that I should give her money back, but I told her that I did not take her money. I kept telling her that I did not even see money when I was cleaning the house. “I was so helpless and had no energy. I thought she was going to kill me. My father and neighbours were trying to open the door, but had no luck in doing so as the burglar gates are very strong.

“Her two friends were holding both my hands while she was placing the iron on me. “Eventually when they opened the door to let go of me, my father could not believe his eyes. “I do not know what went wrong that day; we (my cousin and me) used to get along,” said Selloane. Aron Maretele, Selloane’s father, said he wanted to report the incident immediately, but Lebeko kept stopping him. “She said if I do not report the issue she would give me R10 000. We procrastinated, but eventually I told myself that I have to report her because she almost killed my daughter. “Lebeko wanted to take advantage of the fact that I am struggling financially. “As a family we do not want to see Lebeko anywhere near us because she has showed us how evil she can get. How can you beat up a child who is more than 15 years younger than you like that?

“Even if the child stole the R200, why would you kill your own family member for such a small amount? “We are happy that she appeared in court, but we still want to see her suffer for the pain she caused us physically and emotionally,” said Maretele. Lebeko appeared in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court last Thursday and the case was postponed to 28 February. Lebeko was granted R3 000 bail with strict bail conditions. Her two accomplices will face assault with the intention to do grievious bodily harm. Welkom police spokesperson Capt Stephen Thakeng said: “The SAPS member is facing charges of assault and corruption for allegedly trying to bribe the complainant with a fee of R10 000. “She is still on duty, but the internal investigation has been initiated with immediate effect. “We will have to wait until the internal investigation process is completed before any decision of suspension is taken.”

Club keeps youth off the streets TO keep the youth and children away from the streets, mischief and loitering during the December holidays, a concerned Dirisang Intermediate School teacher, Ouma Swarts, brought the youth and children from Oppenheimer Park, Thabong, together to establish the Oppenheimer Park Youth Development Club. Swarts says the club engages youth and children in drama, poetry, dance, music, visual arts, sport and community development programmes. Their activities are held at the teacher’s home at 11428 Mokoena Street, Oppenheimer Park, daily from 10:00 to 12:00 during school holidays and from 16:00 to 17:00 on school days. To make this a meaningful and stimulating project, artists and interested community members with different talents and skills are invited to voluntarily assist in training and developing the participants. All the parents whose children are members of the club are invited to a meeting on Saturday.

THE Success Cultural Group in Thabong has reopened and the programme for 2014 will include poetry, awareness plays, community development projects and fundraising activities. The proposed plays will include topics addressing crime, woman and child abuse, TB, HIV/Aids, teenage pregnancy and the celebration of national holidays. Community development projects like fundraising concerts for the needy and charity projects will be held. Tshaba Lefuba is the first play that the group will be working on in 2014. Helping the needy children MERLE HENEGAN, founder of the Mamosa Ministries in Virginia and Meloding, currently manages three soup kitchens for needy children. These children are fed daily after school. “For most of these children this is their only meal of the day. “We also fill their lunch boxes to take home so that their sisters or brothers at home can also have something to eat,” said Henegan. She collects clothing for the poor. She also runs five nursery schools for pre-schoolers. “These children are fed, taught and clothed. I urge people to come forward and donate food or anything else they can spare. So many are ill, there are so many families and so many children,” she said. Polisie keer verdagtes vas BENEWENS ses vermeende moordenaars wat oor die naweek in die woonbuurt Thabong aangekeer is, het die polisie in Welkom verlede maand altesaam 80 verdagtes in verband met verskeie oortredings in hegtenis geneem. Sers. Mamello Mokhuoane van Thabong sê die polisie is op 4 Januarie uitgeroep na Chalalestraat waar die lyk van Raymond Nkobolo (21) gekry is. Hy het veelvuldige steekwonde aan sy hele lyf gehad. Hy het glo saam met vriende buite ’n taverne gestaan toe ’n groep mans hulle gestorm en aangeval het. Nkobolo se vriende kon vlug, maar hy is oorval en

vermoor. Volgens inligting was Nkobolo glo vroeër die aand by die taverne met een van die aanvallers in ’n woordewisseling betrokke. Die polisie het inligting opgevolg en vyf van die ses vermeende moordenaars is Sondagnag by ’n ander taverne in hegtenis geneem. Die sesde een is Maandagmiddag aangekeer. Kapt. Stephen Thakeng van Welkom sê die polisie het in Desember 80 verdagtes gevang. Hul beweerde oortredings sluit in gewapende roof, gesinsgeweld, onwettige besit van wapens, besit van dagga, aanranding, diefstal uit ’n motorvoertuig, motordiefstal en huisbraak.

DIE minderjarige meisie wie se verhouding met ’n 42-jarige man hier tot sy skuldigbevinding op verskeie seksuele aanklagte gelei het, word nou sélf van die vervaardiging en verspreiding van kinderpornografie aangekla. Dié skoolkind was verlede jaar ten tyde van die gebeure net 16 jaar oud. Sy word aangekla omdat sy naakfoto’s van haarself vir dié man, Pierre Booysen, gestuur het, én vir klasmaats. Booysen is op aanklagte van seksuele gereedmaking (grooming), die besit van kinderpornografie en die blootstelling van ’n kind aan pornografie skuldig bevind. Hy is ná ’n pleit-en-vonnisooreenkoms met die staat in die hof vir seksuele misdrywe 13 jaar tronkstraf opgelê, wat in geheel en voorwaardelik vir vyf jaar opgeskort is. Hy is intussen weer in hegtenis geneem nadat ander beweerde misdrywe onder die polisie se aandag gekom het. Die dade met die meisie het aan die lig gekom toe haar pa haar selfoon by haar weggeneem het toe sy een Sondag sonder

toestemming uit die kerk gestap het. Hy het die foto’s en gesprekke daarop ontdek. Booysen, ’n voormalige kroegbestuurder, het die meisie uitgelok om vir hom meer naakfoto’s van haarself te stuur nadat sy dit die eerste keer gedoen het, sulke foto’s van homself aan haar gestuur en onder meer vir haar ’n motor beloof om dié dinge te doen. Hy het in besonderhede aan haar voorgeskryf presies watter soort naakfoto’s hy wil hê en in watter posisies sy haarself moet afneem. Sy het onder meer in haar skool-uniform geposeer en haar skaamdele afgeneem. Hy het die meisie belowe dat hy haar aan sy ouers sal voorstel, vir haar ’n Mini Cooper sal koop, haar sal onderhou en het vir haar lugtyd gegee sodat hulle kan kommunikeer. Hy het na haar as “sy vrou” verwys. Die meisie het hom onder die indruk gebring sy is 21, hoewel nog op skool. Sy sal op 6 Februarie weer in die hof verskyn.

Coccioni needs tyres for ’14 LOCAL motor bike racer Luca Coccioni finished the 2013 season with second and fourth overall results in two of the classes in the Northern Regions. He had another second overall in the Club Championships. To add to this, he secured a second spot earlier in the year in Holland, not only making his academy proud, but the Goldfields too. He established himself as a silent force from Welkom to be reckoned with. In December both him as his older brother, Alessio, competed in the 31st 8 hour endurance race at Killarney in Cape Town. Coccioni’s team, consisting of 11 and 12 year olds, the youngest team ever, competed against veterans and overseas

visitors. The team managed to demolish more than half the field, finishing 15th overall after 8 gruelling hours. Alessio’s team recovered from an early accident, having lost 34 laps to effect repairs, to come back from 33rd to finish 21st. With a long season ahead and with the aim to stay competitive in the light of rising tyre costs, Coccioni is looking at the motorsport enthusiasts out there to sponsor a set of tyres, approximately R1 800. He will need eight sets for the season. With three more years of racing on the tables, Coccioni now faces the 2014 season on the Honda 150cc and will face the Dutch team in October at iDube in KwaZulu-Natal, this time around on the 100 cc.

Mieliemarathon vind 36ste keer plaas Molly Green DIE oudste marathon in die Vrystaat, die mieliemarathon, word vanjaar vir die 36ste keer in die Goudveld aangebied. Vir die bekende langasem Louis Massyn is dit ook ’n mylpaal. “Daar is geweldige baie belangstelling in die mieliemarathon van regoor die land – van Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Noordwes, die Noord-Kaap en verskeie klubs in die Vrystaat. “Ons het tot dusver reeds 150 inskrywings ontvang,” sê Louis. Atlete kan môre (17 Januarie)

tussen 17:00 en 20:00 by die sportterrein van die HTS Welkom in Volksweg gaan inskryf. Die marathon begin Saterdag om 05:30. Die roete wat gevolg word, is van HTS na Odendaalsrus en terug. Golf tournament held Molly Green

THE Free State Goldfields Chamber of Business is hosting a prestigious President’s Cup Golf Tournament at the Oppenheimer Park Golf Club in February. The tournament will be instituted as an annual event. Companies are welcome to enter more than one team. The tournament will be held on 15 February. The entry fee is R250 per player (green fees are included). Tees can be sponsored at R500, and putting greens at R500, while wet holes are sponsored at R500 each. This will give companies the exclusive right to advertise around the area of the tee. The tee-off time will be at 11:00. The format will be a two person better ball

Stableford, and shotgun style with no halfway house. Refreshments and snacks will be supplied at wet holes. Companies are invited to enter unlimited teams of two players. Players with and without a handicap are welcome to enter. Should a team have a player without a handicap, they will only be able to compete for prizes and not for the President’s Cup. The competition will be divided up into four categories: Men with and without handicaps, and ladies with and without handicaps. Prizes will be awarded in each of the four categories. The first and runner-up teams in the handicap categories will play for the Floating President’s Cup trophy, which will be followed by the award ceremony and a spit braai.

Member dies THE Orlando Pirates supporters club has lost a beloved member, Selina Seipati Mphatsoe.
