This was announced at the prestigious annual SAPS National Excellence award ceremony that took place in Pretoria last week. The Thabong police station commander, Brig. RESIDENTS of Orange Groove in Thabong say they are sick and tired of being restricted in their right of movement because of criminals. They have identified sections such as Metampelong and New Stands as the no-go areas in their community. Last week a meeting between angry community members and the Thabong police was held at the Setshabelo School to find a solution. The meeting followed a complaint by community members that gangsters in Orange Groove have created their own demarcations that have taken away their right of free movement. Sibongile Dlamini from Orange Groove says she wants the criminals to know that they do not own the township. “We are living in fear, and as community members we are not allowed to walk in some areas because they have made the areas their own territory. If they see you walk there, they will attack you. “As pedestrians we like taking short cuts, especially where there is an open space, but we now have to take the road of motorists because we know that the thugs will attack us. The hot spots are open spaces in the area and abandoned houses. In the open

spaces people are killed, mugged and some are raped. “As the community we are appealing to the police to help us with this situation. “We would like the police to patrol the areas, especially at night and in the early morning, because that is when the dangerous crimes occur.” During the meeting the commander of Thabong Police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit, Lt Col Moleleki Matsabu, said the creation of no-go areas was a movement backwards to oppression. Other community members pointed out that the police had to be given authority to use force against criminals involved in these groupings. The other solution was that parents should be involved in community patrol initiatives. Police spokesperson Malebo Kgosana says the way forward is that there will be committees comprising five members in each of the three units in question. These committee members will work with Social Crime Prevention to solve this problem by identifying the houses where the members of the groups are staying. “After that their families will be visited to discuss this problem with the immediate family members. The visits will guide the committee and the police to the best possible solution,” he says.

Die hartroerende verhaal wat hom daarna in die Nyala-afdeling van die Phakisa-goudmyn afgespeel het, het ’n vriendskap gesmee wat alles oorbrug. “Carlos het my lewe gered. Daar is nie woorde om dié groot dankie te beskryf nie. Hy het ’n baie spesiale mens vir my familie geword,” sê Coetzee van die departement van minerale hulpbronne. Hy was Vrydag met ’n roetineondersoek op die 55ste vlak van die myn saam met Quintas en Mthimkhulu (Shoes) Zihlanga, veiligheidsverteenwoordiger van die National Union of Mineworkers.

Coetzee het sy bewussyn begin verloor en in sy asemnood en benoudheid het hy van Quintas probeer wegkom. In dié proses het Quintas ’n onbedoelde vuishou of twee opgedoen. Quintas het toe reeds hul selfreddingspakke opgeblaas om koel lug in hul longe te kry. Die deksel daarvan het hy gebruik om

Ons kan hulle nie genoeg bedank nie. Die gesegde as een myner bloei, bloei almal, is só waar,” sê Quintas.

Die lede van die komitee steek ’n helpende hand uit na die mense van Allanridge en vra hul samewerking. Hulle wil Allanridge ’n misdaadvrye dorp maak, maar hulle kan dit nie alleen doen nie.

The main causes of accidents at this time are drunken

driving, excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, not using seat belts and vehicles that are not roadworthy. Pedestrians are also victims. Some of these pedestrians walk in the streets drunk. These deaths affect the social and economic state of the country negatively. Bread-winners are lost, leaving behind traumatised child-headed families. Statistics show that R306 billion is lost to the economy every year, monies contributed to the Road Accident Fund (RAF). The petrol price increased for the third time this year on 2 April due to an ever-increasing petrol levy, a source of income for RAF funding. Our responsibility is to abide by the rules of the road and be positive role-models to our kids.

Vegetable gardens win THE annual vegetable garden competition, which is organised by the Morning Star Children’s Centre, recently held its prize-giving ceremony. “The proud and deserving winner of the R1 000 first prize, Nobesuthu Phathekile from Hani Park, had tended her garden with great diligence as did the other prize-winners, Alinah Maboee, Mapalesa Fukuzana and Sellwane Molapo,” says Joan Adams of Morning Star. Open to anyone, this annual project is teaching enterprising township residents what can be done with a little initiative and some hard work. The project is financially supported by the Welkom Rotary Club and the seeds are donated by a local hardware store. “Morning Star deeply appreciates the support and is especially grateful to the Welkom Rotary Club for its sustained interest in this venture since its inception 11 years ago,” says Adams.

Centre supports to prevent crisis THE Zoe Life Centre started their first outreach as a step to awareness,support and education for women and girls preventing a crisis pregnancy or support in a crisis pregnancy. “Our passion is to be available and support with counselling and also educate our community on teenage pregnancy, abortion and other options, STIs and sexual integrity. Living a life of integrity as women created by God is the ultimate goal, but it is never too late to achieve his dream even after wrong choices. His plan is for every women to

THE House of Hope Project for abandoned children is ten years old. This project has been part of the successful procedure of giving loving homes to destitute children. The project started in 2004 as a safe home with two babies that had special needs. Currently it is home to 27 children, who are divided into four homes, namely House of Hope, House of Joy, House of Peace and House of Love. House of Hope is a safe house for nine abandoned babies who are all available for adoption. The three other homes are forever homes, each housing six children with special needs. Each house has a registered foster mother. Founder and project manager Jackie Botes says all the hard work has not only been accomplished by herself. “Many people are involved in the success of this project. Our committee comprises people from all walks of life, including the different churches in our area. “My husband, Fansie, together with all the house mothers, the committee members, the management team and the sponsors have done a great job in making this a great place for the children to live in,” says Botes. She says they started the project after reading about the countless babies that were being abandoned in the Goldfields. “We saw all the sad stories of abandoned babies in Vista and we realised something urgent had to be done about the issue. “Every week when we saw these sad stories, our hearts were sad, so we decided to start a safe home (House of Hope) for abandoned babies. The project soon started to burst out of its seams and we were able to incorporate three more homes for children with special needs,” says Botes. “Our heart is for Welkom; we were

commissioned by the Lord to change Welkom and this is what we will continue to do for the community of this town. “This was a real calling for both of us. I feel that these children are very lucky and blessed to be part of the project because now they also look out for other children in need. But what we have done so far is just a drop in the sea. We still need to do more for the children,” says Botes. Apart from all the homes included in the House of Hope project, there is also the Zoe Life Centre. This is a centre which aims to help pregnant women who fall into the trap of unwanted pregnancies. Here they are given options on what to do with their babies in their situation. “We also helped with the establishment of two homes in Virginia. They are the Potter’s House and House of Grace, as well as El Pisso Home in Bloemfontein. “Looking back at all the children we accommodate in all our foster homes, I feel like a proud mother. We raised our children from where they were in terrible situations, to them now being great young ladies and gentlemen. “I will say it makes me happy to see them grow every day and I want them to know that they are all very special,” she says. Botes says they have various needs at the different homes, but the biggest one currently is an urgent need for nappies. “The nine babies range in age from a few days old to two pre-toddlers; a small boy and girl just over a year old who have both been caught up in the long adoption process in the Free State, which is not in the best interest of the babies. Both of these young ones have sadly been at House of Hope for over a year. “There is also a very big need for winter clothes (boys and girls) for the school-going children at the three forever homes,” she says.

FOCUS ON ENTERPRIZE JOB CREATION CHALLENGE

Enter challenge for aspiring entrepreneurs THE second annual Free State enterPRIZE Job Creation Challenge was launched last month at the Windmill Casino and Entertainment Centre in Bloemfontein. This competition, aimed at job creation through the development of small and medium enterprises in the Free State, is a partnership between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DETEA), the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) and the Flemish International Cooperation Agency (Fica). Contestants will compete to win one of 75 prizes totaling R7,5 million.

This year’s challenge will be offering a combination of financial support and technical assistance, along with business management coaching and mentorship which will be valuable for entrepreneurs experiencing difficulties in obtaining funding. Last year alone the Free State enterPRIZE Job Creation Challenge attracted in excess of 540 entrants from aspiring entrepreneurs across the Free State. One such winner is the 26-year-old Bloemfontein resident Ayanda Makhanya of Genesis Africa Investment (Pty) Ltd whose business focuses on connecting tradesmen with businesses that requires their skill set or services.

The business idea came from her and her colleagues’ realisation that many informal artisans skilled in plumbing, tiling, painting, electricity, carpentry and general building are underpaid due to lack of exposure, lack of qualifications and lack of funding. Jens Dyring Christensen, ILO chief technical advisor, said one of the important means to address the very high levels of unemployment in the province is through the stimulation of entrepreneurship and innovation allowing potential and existing entrepreneurs to identify and exploit new market opportunities thereby creating more economic growth.

A series of road shows will be held throughout the Free State with the aim of assisting and informing entrepreneurs on the competition’s workings. The roadshow details are available on the Free State enterPRIZE Job Creation Challenge website. Thereafter semi-finalists will be selected to participate in business training sessions with adjudication taking place in the first week of June. Three finalists in each of the 25 categories will be announced at a gala dinner to be held on 19 June. Entries close on 2 May. The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) target for Saturday, 12 April, is 15 units of blood, and donations can be made at the SANBS Mobile Bus and Gazebo between 09:00 and 13:00. According to the ABO blood typing system there are four different kinds of blood types: A, B, AB or O. Group A If you belong to Group A, you have A antigens on the surface of your red blood cells and B antibodies in your blood plasma. Group B If you belong to Group B, you have B antigens on the surface of your red blood cells and A antibodies in your blood plasma. Group AB If you belong to the AB od group , you have both A and B antigens on the surface of your red blood cells and no A or B antibodies at all in your blood plasma. People with AB positive blood types are the “universal recipients” as they can receive blood from all blood groups. Group O If you belong to the O blood group , you have neither A or B antigens on the surface of your red blood cells, but you have both A and B antibodies in your blood plasma. O Negative blood can be given to anyone in an emergency and O Negative donors are known as “Universal donors”.

WELKOM-GIMNASIUM het die afgelope atletiekseisoen uitstekend gepresteer deur 14 atlete op te lewer wat die Vrystaatspan gehaal het vir deelname aan die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskapsbyeenkoms wat van 27 tot 29 Maart in Polokwane plaasgevind het. Hier is van links, voor: Daniela Louw (o.17, 800 m) en Hesmari Coetzee (o.17, 400 m en 400 m-hekkies); middel: Khotso Matjato (o.17, driesprong), Milana Muller (o.15, spiesgooi en driesprong), JC Schultz (o.15, hamergooi en diskusgooi), Onica Tshabalala (o.15, driesprong) en Modise Makeka (o.15, 100 m en 200 m); agter: Longelo Motopi (o.19, 400 m-hekkies), Maryna Basson (o.15, gewigstoot), Xoliswa Mahonono (o.15, driesprong), Ryan Koen (o.17, hamergooi), Leighton Goodman (o.17, verspring), Kete Donovan (o.19, hamergooi en gewigstoot) en Jackson Meya (o.15, hoogspring en driesprong).

TWEE leerlinge van die Hoërskool Hennenman, Carel Haasbroek en Cironka Nel, is in die Vrystaatspan ingesluit wat die vakansie aan die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskapsbyeenkoms in Pietersburg gaan deelneem. Carel is ook in die Vrystaatspan ingesluit wat aan die Suid-Afrikaanse sub-jeug-, die junior jeug- en die o.23-baan- en veldkampioenskappe in Stellenbosch gaan deelneem. Hy is ook in die Suid-Afrikaanse span ingesluit wat van 16 tot 28 Augustus aan die 2014-Jeug- Olimpiese Spele in Nanjing (China) gaan deelneem.

Ryg die medaljes in TYDENS die Lejweleputswa-atletiekkampioenskapsbyeenkoms in Sasolburg het die Riebies 23 goue, 13 silweren 27 bronsmedaljes verower.

DIE Riebies se seunsmiddelafstandatlete het op die Lejweleputswa-atletiekkampioenskapsbyeenkoms in Sasolburg al die 800 m-afstande vir seuns gewen en hulle almal was ook op die Vrystaat-kampioenskapsbyeenkoms op die rostrum. Competition in full swing WELKOM’S GOT TALENT is in full swing and the first preliminary round was held this past Saturday at the Goldfields Mall in Welkom. DJ Miss White rocks THE launch of the return of DJ Miss White was a great success with his first gig “Golden Oldies” on Saturday evening at the Bronville Community Hall. Whitey Jansen, aka DJ Miss White, has been a DJ since the early 1980s and 1990s and is back with a full line-up for the rest of the year to entertain the community of Bronville. “My aim is to revive the entertainment industry in the community and bridge the generation gap between the young and old. We have good people living in this community, and with positive activities, we can decrease a lot of the challenges we are currently facing,” says DJ Miss White. There will be something for everyone, from discos for the young ones once a month during the day with security and supervision; to live bands and langarm dances for adults. MIRNÉ DE KLERK van die Welkom-Volkskool het die rekord vir meisies o.11 in gewigstoot op die Vrystaatse laerskoleatletiekbyeenkoms verbeter en die trofee vir algeheel beste meisieatleet ontvang. Op die Suid-Afrikaanse atletiekbyeenkoms in die Paarl was sy eerste met ’n Suid-Afrikaanse rekord en was die algeheel beste meisieveldatleet op die byeenkoms.

KIAN KIRSTEN van die Laerskool Naudéville is in die Noord-Vrystaat se tweekampspan vir die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskapskapsbyeenkoms in Potchefstroom op 4 en 5 April.

TWEE leerlinge van die Laerskool Koppie Alleen het vanjaar uitstekend op die Suid-Afrikaanse laerskole-atletiekkampioenskapsbyeenkoms in die Paarl gepresteer. Nathan Janse van Rensburg (foto) is die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioen vir seuns o.11 in gewigstoot en hy is as die beste seunsveldatleet aangewys. Wian Muller het brons in die gewigstoot vir seuns o.11 ontvang.

ATLETE van die Welkom-Volkskool het hul goed van hul taak op die Noord-Vrystaatse atletiekbyeenkoms in Sasolburg gekwyt. Dié marathon is ’n kwalifiserende wedloop vir die Comrades-marathon wat in Junie plaasvind. Die Wildsfees-marathon word op 12 April deur Goudveld-Multisport aangebied. Die marathon is slegs vir amateurs, soos deur IAAF en ASA gedefinieer. Afstande waaraan deelgeneem kan word, is 42,2 km, 21,1 km en 10 km. Daar sal
