RPA’s petition refused Marti Will
THE executive mayor of Matjhabeng refused to accept the petition from 3 500 Matjhabeng residents, business owners and ratepayers on Tuesday. The Matjhabeng Ratepayers Association (RPA), under the leadership of its president, Evan Thorne, spent two and a half hours trying to dissuade Sebenzile Ngangelizwe, the executive mayor of Matjhabeng, and Thabiso Tsoaeli, the newly appointed chief financial officer of Matjhabeng, from tabling the IDP 2014-’15 municipal budget containing increases which the Matjha- beng community cannot afford. “I have tried tirelessly to convince senior municipal officials and councillors that the budget with proposals for increases in rates and services is unaffordable and not in the public’s best interest,” says Thorne. He says increases will hurt the consumer at a time when everyone is straining to make ends meet. “Ask anyone in business and you’ll know that consumers are stretched to their limit. Pensioners and parentless households are most vulnerable and the increases will serve to increase the misery experienced here in Matjhabeng. “Residents are encouraged to continue to sign the RPA petition forms at the RPA office in Stateway, Welkom, to voice their objection to bureaucratic hardheadedness toward this pending crisis.” “It’s time to consolidate, cut costs of services to the community and to pay serious attention to the retention of existing businesses in Matjhabeng. The councillors involved in the recent interviews
with the RPA did not know about the recent closure of Meadow Feeds and the complete closure of the ABI depot in Welkom. They do not recognise the failure of current IDP plans for the development of new industries is driving more residents to crime and vandalism to find money for basic living costs. “Municipal elected representatives are out of touch with reality in Matjhabeng. Speak to anyone and they will confirm this.” At Tuesday’s meeting Thorne and the RPA executives pointed out to the mayor and the chief financial officer that citizens living here, and businesses in Matjhabeng and the Free State Goldfields, are unable to cope with any increase in tariffs and property rates. “Altogether 40% or more of potential work seekers cannot find jobs and 40% of Matjhabeng citizens survive on government grants. Surviving businesses and citizens will leave this sinking ship if the economy isn’t boosted soon,” says Thorne. “The next Marikana could be right here in Matjhabeng.” ) See photo on p 2.
TO THE RESCUE: Thomas Lane manages to open a stormwater drain in the street to get to his neighbour’s Dalmatian. Glowy, a bitch with small pups, was trapped there. Photo: Cherriane Lane
Firemen won’t rescue dog Alet van der Walt IT seems the days of firemen bravely rescuing old ladies’ cats or dogs are long gone. Last week Thomas Lane had to open a storm-water drain in the street all by himself when the Welkom Fire Brigade decided rescuing an animal was not part of its job. Lane tells Vista he saw an SPCA truck and Welkom Fire Brigade truck parked on the corner of Starling and Finch Road. When he asked the two drivers what the problem was, they told

him a dog was trapped in the storm-water drain and they did not know how to get it out. Lane offered to help them, but both of the drivers then left the scene. Lane and his wife, Cherriane, managed to open the drain with their own garden tools. The SPCA employee returned, but the fireman never came back. According to the driver of the SPCA truck, he had left to ask for tools and to get somebody to help, but the municipal workers refused to help or lend him anything to open the drain cover with to get the dog out.

Lane says he did not mind helping the dog, but had hoped that the fire brigade would at least stay there to help him if the drain caved in. The grateful elderly owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, says the dog, a Dalmatian, went missing the day before. She started to look for it and when she heard it crying in the drain she phoned the SPCA and fire brigade, hoping they would be able to get it out. ) No comment had been received from the Matjhabeng Fire Department at the time of going to press.
