Any member who has encountered any event which he or she feels amounts to a criminal activity must visit the nearest station to talk it through with the police. It will be determined at the police station after applying relevant acts whether it is necessary to open a case. “In this case we would advise the complainant to approach the relevant designated police officer (DPO) to discuss it in line with the Firearms Control Act of 2000 and see if a case can be opened. Should a case be opened, it will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for decision.”

THE hunting which is taking place at Tikwe Lodge in Virginia is against the law. It is in contravention of the South African Firearms Control Act (60 of 2000) to discharge a weapon in a built-up area. Section 120 (7) states categorically: “It is an offence to discharge a firearm, an antique firearm or an airgun in a built-up area or any public place, without good reason to do so”. On Tuesday night Roelof Stolz, the owner of Tikwe Lodge, changed the Tikwe Lodge status on Facebook to: “Dakvleis moet da wees dit is dan winter ons jag by Tikwe.” Members of the OFS Virginia Facebook page are writing about a bakkie transporting five hunters around the camp adjacent to Highlands Avenue. Accident claims life

AN accident at the newly constructed intersection at Ventersburg claimed the life of one person while seven passengers were seriously injured. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon when a bakkie, which took the offramp from the N1 to enter Ventersburg, collided with a taxi that was travelling from Welkom to Senekal. According to eye-witnesses, the bakkie was supposed to stop at the intersection and it hit the minibus taxi on the side. Emergency personnel worked for hours to remove the injured passengers from the

His pregnant wife and their three-year-old child were travelling with him and were taken to the Bongani Hospital with five other passengers. The seven seriously injured patients were sent to the Oppenheimer Hospital. The driver of the Isuzu bakkie fled the scene after the accident. A case of culpable homicide was opened for further investigation. During the investigation it came to light that the driver was hospitalised at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Gert van Niekerk is op Vrydag 4 Julie in die hospitaal opgeneem en aanvanklik was hy en sy familie tevrede met die behandeling wat hy ontvang het. Hy moes wel redelik lank op ’n bed wag, maar oor die algemeen was daar nie probleme nie. Die Maandag, 7 Julie, het dinge egter begin skeefloop toe die weekpersoneel oorgeneem het. Van Niekerk se vrou, Dot, het aan Vista vertel pasiënte se kos word met etenstyd net op hul bedkassies neergeplak. Diegene wat nie self kan eet nie, se onaangeraakte borde word dan ná ete net weer op ’n trollie gepak en terug na die kombuis teruggeneem. Die behandeling wat pasiënte verlede Woensdag gekry het, was egter die laaste strooi en Donderdagoggend het die Van Niekerks besluit dit sal beter wees om Gert tuis te versorg. Verlede Woensdag het verpleegpersoneel geen versorging gedoen nie en Gert en nog ’n pasiënt van Saal 1 het van 11:00 tot 16:00 in sopnat beddens gelê. Volgens sy seun, Jan, het die ander pasiënt so erg geürineer dat die urine deur die matras gevloei het en ’n plas onder die bed gevorm het. Dot van Niekerk se pleidooie vir ’n skoon droë doek vir haar man is geweier. ’n Verpleegster het aan haar gesê dat sy nie self haar man se doek mag ruil nie. Dieselfde personeellid kon egter nie verduidelik waarom pasiënte so onversorg gelaat word

Die verpleegpersoneel weet blykbaar nie hoe om ’n drup in te sit wanneer ’n pasiënt se are nie duidelik sigbaar is nie. Vir die dokters wat by hierdie hospitaal werk, is daar egter meestal net lof. Vista het die hospitaal besoek. Hoewel die gebou oud en verwaarloos is, is die sale meestal skoon. Dit wil voorkom of pasiënte wat nie vir personeel “moeite” is nie, goed behandel word. Verswakte en versteurde mense is egter volgens die Van Niekerks uitgelewer aan die grille en giere van wie ook al aan diens is. Uit gesprekke met pasiënte blyk dit dat die vrouesale beter behandeling ontvang. Die gesondheidsdepartement is in die proses om ’n nuwe bestuurder by die Thusanong-hospitaal aan te stel. ) Dr. Yusaf Vahed het teen druktyd nog nie op Vista se navrae reageer nie.

Ek het nie aan my selfoon of aan die paniekknoppie langs my gedink nie. Ek het net plat gelê op die bevel: ‘Lie down, lie down, don’t look at us. We will kill you.’ “Hulle het my aanhoudend gedreig en het my hande en voete vasgebind.” Toe hulle haar vir haar bankkaarte vra het sy gesê dit is in haar voertuig. Drie van die mans is toe uit na die motor toe. Die man wat agtergebly het, het haar deurgaans met óf die dood óf verkragting gedreig. Toe hy in

haar slaapkamerkas grawe, het sy in ’n helder oomblik besef sy lê langs die paniekknoppie. Sy het dit begin druk. “Ek het nie besef dit is klankloos nie en het dit aanhoudend gedruk. Die man by die kas het omgedraai en gesien ek druk die knoppie. Hy was woedend. Hy het begin skreeu en gedreig om my aan te rand. Hy het my uit die kamer gesleep en my in die gang vasgebind. Hy is toe al skreeuend buite na sy makkers. Daar was buite ’n verskriklike argument. Ek het losgekom en is by die agterdeur uit. Ek het oor die agtermuur geklim. Ek kon my buurman wakker kry en het met sy foon die polisie gebel. Die sekuriteitsmaatskappy het toe nog nie hul opwagting gemaak nie. Ek is stilletjies terug na my huis toe. Ek het saam met die polisie daar aangekom. Die sekuriteitsmaatskappy het eers daarna hier aangekom.”

Irene het groot lof vir die polisie. Hulle was vinnig, professioneel en behulpsaam. Een polisieman het Irene na haar ouers geneem. Toe sy en haar pa na haar huis in Flamingopark in Welkom terugkeer was die mense wat vingerafdrukke neem reeds daar. Al vier mans is Vrydag voor 09:00 in hegtenis geneem. Drie is by die taxi-staanplek in Bedelia aangekeer nadat lede van die publiek die polisie gewaarsku het dat mans probeer om televisies te verkoop. Die vierde man is net daarna in Irene se voertuig in Thabong aangekeer. Die televisies, haar skootrekenaar en haar voertuig is teruggekry. Die juwele, bankkaarte en selfone is nie teruggekry nie. “Hulle het in daardie kort tyd van die gesteelde goed ontslae geraak, maar ek is ongedeerd en ek lewe. Bolla het niks oorgekom nie. God is goed.”

Friends focus on children A PROJECT called the Bubble Gum Friends (BGF) is a community project which has been developed as part of a programme called the DA Young Leaders. This is a programme designed by the DA to develop young leaders. “Part of the programme is that we have to initiate a community project,” says Zarita Naudé, one of the developers of the programme. “We have 19 wonderful, dedicated and loving volunteers who will assist me. Each child from the House of Hope project will be placed with a volunteer (Bubble Gum Friend) for three months. “The BGF has to spend a minimum of four hours a month with the child. They will assist the child in mathematics and

also have to treat the child to something special once a month,” says Naudé. This project will focus on each child’s marks for maths and to provide individual attention to each child. “We are very excited to start this project. I have a team of three people assisting me with all the arrangements. Ivana Palmer is organising the events. Selina Tabile is responsible for our finances and Hester Naudé is in charge of all the learning material. We also have a Facebook page called Bubble Gum Friends,” says Naudé. Blood scarce this winter THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is doing its utmost to ensure that a blood shortage is avoided. However, with all efforts in place it seems the cold weather is keeping donors away. Winter is a difficult time due to schools and universities being closed for the holidays, as well as an increase in illnesses such as the flu. This places the SANBS under immense pressure to collect safe and good quality blood products. “The SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival. “At the moment we don’t have enough blood available on a national level,” says

A GROUP calling themselves the Dream Girls Foundation, a non-profit organisation aimed at the empowerment of young women, has been launched in Kutloanong, Odendaalsrus. “This group aims to empower young women and girls in and around the Lejweleputswa District. The foundation is targeting young women who are faced with poverty, unemployment, crime, teenage pregnancy, HIV/Aids and socioeconomic challenges,” says Lebo Selloane, chairperson of the group. “The Dream Girls Foundation is passionate about women empowerment and the decision to embark on this journey was made because they are game changers and agents of positive change who want to contribute positively to our community.” The foundation was founded initially to help young women from her community in Kutloanong. “A lot of young women in the community need women they can look up to and this is a way to inspire and motivate them to want to do better in life. “We have touched so many lives in various small ways. We visit schools to inspire young kids and show them the importance of getting an education. “As social entrepreneurs, we have demonstrated that if people can just start by touching the lives of those around them, they can achieve a lot more. “The organisation consists of a group of young women and girls that will spearhead issues and concerns that affect young women and girls,” she says. “We are a non-profit organisation devoted to saving lives and helping the people in the community. SMILES WARM UP THE HOUSE OF HOPE PROJECT HOMES A cold winter may have hit Welkom this week but in the homes of the House of Hope Project they must have been the warmest places in town on Tuesday 08 July 2014. The Beatrix Winter CARE initiative has been able to supply new winter pyjamas, slippers and dressing gowns. The excitement levels were through the roof as they were given their gifts and became the comic book character on their new pyjamas.

It was with great sadness we learnt that the boys in the House of Joy had been omitted from the list of winter pyjamas and dressing gowns so we are now going full steam ahead to change this for them as soon as possible.

Without the support of the Beatrix employees and their huge hearts we would not have been able to show how much we CARE for our community and by doing so have made a difference.

Each home accommodates 6 children and a House Mother and we were dismayed to hear that these children did not have winter pyjamas, gowns and slippers. This was added to the list on the Beatrix 2014 winter CARE initiative and with thanks to the employees at Beatrix and a donation from Norman's Relining and AED Mining Services we have been able to fulfil some of their wishes on their wish list. The House Mothers were full of smiles as they knew that getting the children into bed on Tuesday evening was going to be easy as each one would not be able wait to put on their new winter woolies.

SHEQ Practitioner (Ventilation) C-Upper

The successful candidate will co-ordinate an Occupational Hygiene programme in order to ensure compliance of provision of the Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals Act and its regulations. This will include participating in Risk Assessments based on external and internal influences, adhering to Behavioural Expectations and participating in formal SHEQ audits. Participating in Significant Incident Investigations, co-ordinating an Occupational Hygiene programme, measuring environmental stresses and making recommendations for corrective actions (Ventilation, Dust, Water, Noise, Illumination, Temperature and Pressure) is also required. Candidates must have a Chamber of Mines Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control and 5 years’ relevant experience. A National Diploma/Degree and First Aid Certificate will be advantageous. Hy is onlangs deur Echo Catch, ’n hengelakademie, genooi waar hy ‘n werksessie aangebied het om hengelaars in die fynere kunsies van hengel touwys te maak.
