Dr Vahed redeployed Alet van der Walt

OPTIMISM about the possiblity of changing the Bongani Hospital into a success story is fading, as Dr Yusaf Vahed, who was appointed as chief executive officer (CEO) at this hospital in May, was sidelined and redeployed to forensics. Vahed’s story and the story of doctors at the Pelonomi Hospital who were suspended last week sound so similar, it is chilling. Early in August Vahed was asked to go to Bloemfontein to meet with senior officials. There he was assured of the backing of Dr Benny Malakoane, the Free State Health MEC, and again asked to bring about the change so desperately needed at the hospital. Only days later he was told to return to the forensics department in Welkom where he previously worked as a pathologist. Another CEO was instated at the Bongani Hospital, but no reasons were given as to why Vahed was suddenly redeployed. Concerns about deaths that are seen as preventable by doctors are a rising concern in the Free State. The recent death of Frank Matthyssen from Welkom is just one example of the failure of the Health Department. Matthysen died in the Universitas Hospital because there was no cardiologist available. Dr Sehularo Gaelesjwe, Universitas’s CEO, was not available to authorise the treatment of Matthysen at a private hospital. By the time permission was granted, it was too late. Personnel at the Bongani Hospital fear for their jobs as a disciplinary hearing against a senior employee seems to be the reason why Vahed was transferred. The hearing never took place as Vahed was already redeployed. People who spoke out against verbal abuse and threats are victimised and a nurse said Bongani is again in the hands of the medical mafia. ) At the time of going to press the Free State Health Department had not yet replied to enquiries from Vista.

Betaling geëis voor herstelwerk Molly Green ’n STERK stroom peperduur water stroom nou al meer as drie weke uit die hoofwaterpyp tussen Jasons- en Loisweg in Riebeeckstad. Dit stroom soos ’n rivier in Jasonsweg af na die Loisweg-afrit. Sue Douglas, ’n bekende inwoner van Welkom, het dié probleem by die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit probeer aanmeld, maar was nie suksesvol nie. “Ek het later wel uitgevind dat Matjhabeng nie die lekkasie kan regmaak nie omdat die pyp ’n T-stuk kort wat net deur ’n private maatskappy gemaak kan word. “Die maatskappy moet eers betaal word voordat die werk gedoen kan word.” Sy sê die pyp lek al meer as twee jaar. “Matjhabeng het elke keer houtproppe ingeslaan wat deur inwoners wat nie water het nie, verwyder is. Ek wil graag weet: 1. Wie gaan vir die miljoene liters water betaal? 2. Wie gaan die teerpad regmaak wat nou verbrokkel het? 3. Wie gaan die gemors opruim wat hier afspoel? 4. Wie gaan die groot gat toemaak wat al jare langs die pad is?”

Trevor Hattingh van Hennenman sê hy ry daagliks met dié pad. “Ek het daar stilgehou en gesien die water stroom by ’n gat uit waaraan iemand blykbaar gewerk het. “Ek het die stroom water sowat 2 km gevolg. “Toe doen ek ’n berekening. Sowat 20 kF water stroom per minuut by die pyp uit. Dit beteken 210 600 kF ’n week. “Teen ’n gemiddeld van R10,65/kF beteken dit ’n verlies van meer as R2 miljoen per week.” Hy sê daar is nog ’n ernstige waterlekplek sowat ’n kilometer verder. “Geen wonder Matjhabeng is bankrot nie. Ek is nie bereid om so te lewe nie. Dit is onaanvaarbaar dat belastingbetalers vir dié verliese moet betaal. “Suid-Afrika het ’n tekort aan water en kan sulke watervermorsing nie bekostig nie.” ) Teen druktyd is Vista se navraag aan die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit oor dié vermorsing nog nie beantwoord nie.

Goudveld het hoop SLAGGATE, strome rou riool, werkloosheid en vuil strate is meestal die gesig van Welkom en die res van die Goudveld. Dit is moeilik om nie soms in sak en as te sit oor die toekoms van die streek nie. ’n Ernstige krisis met Eskom staar die Mathjabeng-munisipaliteit in die gesig en rou riool word nou so uitgepomp dat selfs plase bedreig word. Kort-kort hoor ’n mens van nog ’n mynskag wat sluit en mense wat werkloos en sonder heenkome is. Tussen Welkom en Riebeeckstad verdwyn lamppale wat die hoofweg verlig het die een na die ander. In Phomolong speel kinders in strate waar riool vloei. In Virginia groei gras uit die sypaadjies en sakke rommel lê dikwels vir dae op sypaadjies. Wanneer ’n mens in ’n nuuskantoor werk, is jy pynlik bewus van elke verstopte rioolpyp, moord, menslike krisis en mynskag wat sluit. Maar die Goudveld het ook ’n ander sy. Wanneer jong mense van die Goudveld op die internasionale sportterrein uitblink en medaljes huis toe bring, besef ’n mens hoe inwoners selfs in die moeilikste omstandighede nog kan uitblink. Organisasies soos die DBV, Claws, House of Hope, die Nehemia- en Sonskyn-projek en verskeie ander instansies maak elke dag ’n verskil in ’n wêreld waar ’n mens soms maklik net die donker kan raaksien. ’n Kampioenbokser van Venda en ’n hokvegter (MMA) van Nieu-Seeland het onlangs besluit om in Welkom te kom woon. Albei hierdie mans wat sportsterre is, is bereid om juis hier in Welkom ’n verskil te kom maak. Albei het besluit om hier te kom bly om ’n verskil in veral jong mense se lewe te maak. Wanneer ’n mens hoor hoe skitter ’n jong sangeres soos Lara Badenhorst van Hennenman op verhoë in Gauteng, of as Seabelo Senatla twee pragdrieë in ’n rugbywedstryd druk, kan ’n mens nie anders nie as om te besef dat selfs in die donkerste tye daar altyd sterre sal wees wat helder skyn.

Strooi vullis in dorp ’n LESERSJOERNALIS van Riebeeckstad het die foto gestuur. Die foto is geneem waar Blenheim- en Craiblaan kruis. Weens munisipale vragmotors wat nie vullis kon verwyder nie, het die onwettige storting van rommel nou dramaties in die gebied toegeneem.

Altyd trots op Goudveldskole se sport JAN MAKKINK, Welkom: DIE besluit om Saterdag ’n binne-diehuis-dag te maak is ’n maklike en voor die handliggende keuse. My skool, waarby ek trots werksaam is, het die vorige Saterdag drie spanne in die halfeindronde in die Noordwes-stadion gehad. Voorwaar ’n prestasie, maar tog sou ek graag enige van die spanne vandag in ’n eindstryd wou ondersteun. Al die spanne het waardig meegeding, maar nie een dring verder deur nie. My keuse is egter danksy die reën, koue en wind, asook die opwindende Aussie- en All Black-tweestryd, maklik gemaak. Dan kon ek ook nog uiteindelik my hande ná ’n lang soektog op Robin Williams se Dead Poets Society lê. Binne is daar opwindende dinge om te doen, ook is dit warm en gesellig. En dan kom die nuus dat ’n buurskool –

en uit die normale aard van saak, aartsvyand – pas ’n liga in die stadion gewen het. En so kom daar weliswaar ’n spyt dat ek dit nie beleef het nie, byna ’n trots as ek dit sou wou erken dat ’n beker, al is dit dan daar, tog in Welkom staan en nie in ’n ander Vrystaatse dorp nie. Dalk moet ons weer herinner word wat ons skole in Welkom aan ons kinders bied. Dalk moet ons weer kyk hoe staan ons kinders wat van die Goudveld se skole kom uit in die wêreld daar buite. Die Goudveld se skole ry na ander dorpe

en hulle hierheen sodat ons teen talent uit ons eie voedingsgebied moet deelneem. Julle wat in die Goudveld woon en werk, maak sekerlik staat op die gemeenskap; julle eie mense se ondersteuning om ’n sukses te maak. Voornemende hoërskoolouers, die Goudveld se hoërskole maak op jul talentvolle kinders staat om te doen wat ons reeds jare doen: om wenners te kweek, leiers op te wek, kinders op te voed en te onderrig om in die wêreld daar buite kop en skouers uit te staan en ’n verskil te maak. Gaan maak gerus ’n draai in die ingangsportale, gaan lees die name. Neem kennis, dit gaan jou ’n wyle besig hou. Kom ons leer ons kinders weer waar hulle vandaan kom. Kom ons maak hulle weer trots op hul herkoms. Dink mooi en doen die regte ding.

Sannette informed my neighbour that the new rate (R1,55) was indeed correct, but that the rate was applicable to up to 350 units at which stage the new rate (after 350 units) would be R1,65. These indicate increases of 53,36% and 63,25% respectively (considering the 2013-’14 rate of 1,0107 per unit). No mention was made of seasonal charges. These increases are accurate (so I don’t know how Vista arrives at the increases mentioned).

I have lived in many cities in South Africa and only here do ratepayers pay bills two months old. So if we paid in August for our July usage and not for the June usage, the council’s debt to Eskom would possibly be halved. If the council doesn’t have the manpower (whether in respect of numbers or quality) to get our bills out earlier, that is their problem, not ours. I’m talking about those of us that actually do pay our bills, of course.

Shocked about new municipal increases RATE RATEPAYER, Matjhabeng:

I READ with interest the comments in Vista concerning municipal increases. My neighbour went to the municipality in Hennenman to clear some account problems and I asked her to confirm with Sannette (a senior employee there, and the only one worthwhile asking about anything) the new rate of R1,55 indicated on the 27/07 statements and which rate becomes effective as of the month of July.

At Lake View the driver was tied up with a rope and his purse, two cellphones and cash were taken. One suspect took his bank cards and bank pin and drove to town to withdraw money. While the one suspect was away, the other two took turns to rape the woman. The suspect who went to town could not withdraw money, because the man had no money in his account. The robbers left the couple and instructed them to drive away. Nobody has been arrested yet and the police are appealing to the community to help. Anybody with information can call Det. Samel geld in LARISCA STEYN het die afgelope naweek huis toe gekom om ’n spesiale geldinsamelingsprojek ten bate van haar in Odendaalsrus by te woon. Larisca is in Bloemfontein in ’n rehabilitasiesentrum waar sy leer om by haar nuwe lewensomstandighede aan te pas. Hier is sy saam met van links Frikkie Meintjes, Pierre van der Sandt en Andre Olwage wat ’n tjek van R28 000 aan haar oorhandig het. Die bedrag is op die vorige Saterdag se pretloop en die afgelope naweek se motorfietsrit ingesamel. Die Moth-klub, motorfietsklubs van die Goudveld-motorfietsvereniging en stappers, asook ander klubs van sover soos Durban, het almal bygedra om die twee insamelingsprojekte suksesvol te maak.

Out of dumps for a while HOMELESS people who live on the Matjhabeng municipal dumping site were recently treated to hot soup and bread during a visit by members of the Thabong Police Cluster. The visit was an initiative by the Thabong Cluster Women’s Network and Men for Change. All six stations in Thabong Cluster were involved. Clothing was collected from members and distributed to beneficiaries. One of the men who makes a living out of the scrap, Teboho Tseisi (27), said he has a matric certificate and can’t find a decent job. “Recycling gives me a little money. I feel that what I am doing is better than committing crime,” Tseisi told the police. The Thabong Cluster commander, Maj. Gen. Lerato Molale, accompanied the members to the dumping site. Molale says the people who scavenge, should be socially developed. “They are here because of unemployment. We are appealing to the business sector and potential employers to assist in the employment of these people to enable them and their families to live better lives. As a result South Africa will grow to be a much better society,” said Molale.

Riebies maak hart oop vir Welriedal

DIE uitreik-aksie na inwoners van Welriedal het kinders van die Hoërskool Riebeeckstad ’n spesiale kykie in die lewe van die inwoners gegee.

NEGE leerlinge aan die Hoërskool Riebeeckstad het vir ’n skoolopdrag besluit om na die Welriedal-jeugsorgsentrum in Riebeeckstad uit te reik. Die Riebies het gebruikte speelgoed, klere en ook kruideniersware ingesamel en aan die sentrum oorhandig. Die kinders het ook aan elke inwoner van die sentrum ’n sjokolade met ’n spesiale boodskap oorhandig. Die kinders se pa’s het gehelp om die dag vir almal spesiaal te maak deur wors te braai. Die huismoeders, Clotilda Hattingh en Alida Stevens, het aan die vroue gewys hoe

die huis funksioneer en wat die uitdagings by die huis is. Nadat almal saam worsbroodjies geëet het, is hulle met sjokoladekoek bederf. Hattingh het die besoekers verseker dat die kinders van die jeugsorgsentrum die besoek baie geniet het en die skenkings opreg waardeer. Enigeen wat by die jeugsorgsentrum betrokke wil raak, kan ds. This NPO is receiving regular donations of meat, bread, vegetables and building materials to restore the worn-down buildings the residents of Delta Flats in Odendaalsrus call home. “It always brings a smile to any charity organisation if they know that they have made a difference in other people’s lives. What makes the joy even greater is when the people who have been helped, have learnt to help themselves to make an even bigger difference in their own lives. Struggling to survive without a grant A POOR family in Kuthlanong was helped by the scouts from the Phehello Secondary School and the Methodist Church. The family of five was living in a tiny shack where there was not even space to move around. The children are also severely malnourished because they live from food scraps from dustbins. They received a huge gift during July when the church and the scouts built them a bigger shack and handed them some food, clothes and a bed. The mother of the family is mentally disturbed. People who wish to help, can phone Margaret Mokgothu on 083-338-7418. The family doesn’t receive any social grants or help from the Department of Social Welfare. They also request furniture and enough clothes and somebody who has the knowledge to help to register the mother for a grant.

TLB has big talent THREE students of the TLB Music School in Welkom were included in the national top six of the Soloist for Christ singing competition. Vicky Behr, Gerhard Becker and Alizma Prinsloo qualified for the national competition when they participated in the auditions at the St Helena Primary School in Welkom earlier this year. Alizma also went on to win the competition. The top 12 national performances and Alizma’s win will be televised on kykNET Musiek, channel 146, tomorrow at 17:30. Her music videos will also be aired on DStv shortly.

GERHARD BECKER, a student at the TLB Music School, was chosen as one of the top six in the Soloist for Christ competition.

VICKY BEHR was one of the top six performers at the national singing competition.

ALIZMA PRINSLOO won the Soloist for Christ competition and her music videos will soon be televised on DStv.

Youth trained in drama and poetry THE Success Cultural Group offers free drama and poetry classes to youths. Rehearsals are held daily from 16:00 to 17:00 at 17566 Shuping Circle, Rooistene. Saduma Miya acts as mentor.

The project was established to give children and young people the opportunity to develop their talents and showcase their abilities to an audience. The group recently took part at

Hulle gaan op 27 September weer ’n Mnr., Mev. en Mej. Sandrivier-kompetisie aanbied. Met ’n soortgelyke projek wat in 2013 gehou is, is genoeg kos vir drie maande vir die DBV ingesamel. Blood still scarce THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is doing its utmost to ensure that a blood shortage is avoided. However, regardless of all efforts, it seems the cold weather is keeping donors away. Winter is a difficult time due to schools and universities being closed for the holidays, as well as an increase in illnesses such as the flu. This places the SANBS under immense pressure to collect safe and good quality blood products. “The SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who rely on blood transfusions for their survival. “At the moment we don’t have enough blood available on a national level,” says

Vanessa Raju, communications manager of the SANBS. “It is only with the help of the selfless blood donors that we’ll be able to ensure that patients receive blood transfusions.” The SANBS is appealing to people, particularly to its regular donors, to not miss out on their next donation date and to other members of the public who meet the minimum requirements to become blood donors. Minimum blood donor requirements: ) You must be between 16 and 65 years old. ) You must weigh more than 50 kg. ) You must be in good health. ) You must lead a sexually safe lifestyle. THE Hussain brother and sister duo, Noor and Rahim, were crowned this year’s Mr and Miss Welkom 2014 during the pageant which was held at the Goldfields Casino. Noor (9) and her brother, Rahim (6), of the Welkom Preparatory School, have been participating in pageants since a very early age and have won big all over the Free State. According to their mother, Sylvia, they have also been participating in national pageants in Johannesburg. Noor is part of the Kidz2000 Model Agency. To play squash for Free State Included in SA side KEAGAN WAUGH, a learner of the St Dominic’ s College in Welkom, has been selected to represent the u.14 South African Schools squash team. He represented the Free State as the number one player in the u.14 team at the interprovincial squash tournament held in Johannesburg during the June holidays. All nine provinces, as well as Zimbabwe, were represented at the tournament. Of the nine matches Keagan played, he won seven. The South African rankings for squash are determined from the results of this and other tournaments throughout the year. Keagan was selected as the number six player for South Africa.

Twee pak wedren Molly Green TWEE lede van Goudveld-MultiSport was vanjaar onder die sowat 1 200 fietsryers wat aan die Baviaans-bergfietswedren oor 230 km deelgeneem het. Die wentyd was 8 uur en 57 minute. Dr. Louis Stevens het die wedren in 13 uur en 20 minute voltooi en Danie Theron

in 15 uur en 43 minute. Atlete neem in spanne van twee deel. Die bergfietswedren strek van Willowmore in die Karoo verby Jeffreysbaai en deur die Baviaanskloof. Stevens is ’n gesoute fietsryer wat vanjaar die vierde keer aan dié moordende wedren deelgeneem het.

Trui vir 100ste wedstryd Molly Green DIE Griffons-agtsteman, Nicky Steyn, speel Saterdag in Wellington in sy 100ste wedstryd vir die Perstruie. Hy sal op 6 September in die Noordwes-stadion in Welkom vereer word wanneer ’n spesiale rugbytrui aan hom oorhandig gaan word. Nicky (29) het op skool aan Welkom-Gimnasium Cravenweekrugby gespeel. Hy is daarna Haaitenk toe en het ’n paar wedstryde vir die Haaie se o.20-span gespeel. In 2005 het hy teruggekeer Welkom toe en was hy kaptein van die Griffons se o.21-span. Daarna is hy Bloemfontein toe waar hy as flank 27 wedstryde vir die Cheetahs gespeel het.

In 2008 het hy teruggekeer Welkom toe en in 2009 het hy ’n kontrak met die Griffons onderteken. “Dit het nog nie behoorlik by my ingesink dat my 100ste wedstryd vir die Griffons voorlê nie. “Ek weet dit is ’n belangrike mylpaal in enige rugbyspeler se loopbaan.” Van die hoogtepunte in Nicky se loopbaan was toe hy in 2007 lid van die Cheetahs-span was wat in die Vodacombeker-eindronde gespeel het en toe die Griffons in 2008 die Curriebekereerste-liga gewen het, asook toe hy in 2012 vir die Suid-Afrikaanse Barbarianspan uitgedraf het. Nicky, ’n bourekenaar, sê rugby is sy groot liefde. “Ek sal seker maar vir die

Griffons speel totdat hulle my uitskop,” sê hy grappenderwys. Eugene van Wyk, uitvoerende hoof van die Griffons, sê die enigste ander Griffons-speler wat ’n honderdtal agter sy naam kon skryf, was Sarel Louw. Daar was wel verskeie spelers wat vir die destydse Noord-Vrystaatspan gespeel het, soos Eric Herbert, Hennie Bester en Stephan Nieuwenhuizen, wat met honderdtalle gespog het. “Ek kom ’n lang pad saam met Nicky. “Hy is ’n staatmaker, ’n ervare speler wat baie vir die span beteken.”

Charity wins in race THE annual Mediclinic Welkom Eskom Athletics Club Free State Road Race was held for the 12th time this year and it was bigger than any of the previous races. According to Hilde du Plessis, main organiser, the race was a huge success with athletes coming from all over the country to support the 1 Victory 4 Excellence race. Three beneficiaries were chosen this year. The Charlotte Moll Haven was the main financial recipient while Cansa and SANBS both had the oppurtunity to use this big platform as a means to raise awareness for their causes. The 5 km women’s race was won by Ntswaki Molahloe of the Riebeeckstad High School (19:25) with Lilian Tshabane and Mamosuwe Lephaila in second and third place. The open 10 km men’s race results were: (1) Samuel Matsepe (Eskom), 30:20, (2) William Manelo, (3) Jonas Soke, (4) Gitsemang Rancho, (5) Chabeli Nyedimane, (6) Pule Tjoane, (7) Xolisa Quiliso, (8) Pule Hlabahlaba, (9) Paul Tsipane, (10) Thapelo Modula.
