Gangs’ reign of terror

Community mourns the death of latest victim (19) of violent crime Alet van der Walt

PHOMOLONG TOWNSHIP is in the grip of gangs who rule, rape and kill as they wish. The community, especially women, fear these ruthless young men who have no respect for the life of others. So says Jonas Motsumi, the uncle of Nthabeleng Sehapi, who was only 19 years old when she was killed in the township last week. She was a good student and wanted to become a train driver once she completed her matric year. Motsumi, who is a pastor of the Everlasting God Apostolic Church, says the three men who were arrested for the suspected murder of his niece are known for their criminial behaviour in the township. They were previously arrested, but it seems that they never stay behind bars very long. One of the men is the son of a teacher in

Phomolong and Motsumi alleges that she always pays for lawyers to keep her son out of jail. This time things went too far. Nthabeleng’s body was found on 6 October on the outskirts of the township. She was raped and killed. The three men were arrested the same day on charges of murder and rape. They are reportedly members of a gang called the Flywheels. Residents of the township told Vista that women are even raped in their houses when gangsters kick doors open. At night when the men visit taverns, nobody is safe on the streets. Young girls who like to go to taverns to socialise are risking their lives, but parents say it is difficult to stop them. On the night Nthabeleng was killed, she went out with friends to visit one of the many taverns in the area. The next morning her lifeless body was found by a passer-by.

The community is planning to stage a protest at the Hennenman Magistrate’s Court today when the men will apply for bail. The ANC Women’s League, the Youth League, various community groups and churches will take part in the protest. They will ask for stricter police action against gangsters and will ask that the three will be remanded in custody.
