Top gliders in action at national championships in Welkom
GLIDERS like this will be seen in the skies of Central South Africa from this weekend when the South African National Championships take place. The championships will bring pilots from across the world to Welkom.
TOP-RANKED international pilots from Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Poland, Slovakia and New Zealand are among the gliders who are competing in the South African National Gliding Championships in Welkom from Saturday to 22 December. The championships will be held at the Welkom Airport. The Soaring Society of South Africa’s (SSSA) chairman, Dirk Smit, says most of the South African pilots who competed in the recent World Gliding Championships will be in action at this competition to defend their places in the national team against a strong line-up of young and upcoming pilots. The gliders will also be competing for a position on the national ranking list which will make them eligible for the next World Gliding Championships to be held in Lithuania in 2016. Amongst the international competitors are many world-and European champions which will make the competition a spectacle not to be missed for connoisseurs of this sport. A daily route has to be completed in the fastest possible time by using only wind energy. The gliders have to use the air currents or updrafts , commonly known by glider pilots as thermals , to gain height and fly from one thermal system to the next. Residents should watch the skies daily from around 11:00 and depending on the strength of these thermals, gliders should return from 16:00 onwards. According to Smit, these gliders can cover distances of up to 700 km or more daily at an average speed of up to 170 km/h.
