Cansa’s Relay for Life very successful THE annual Cansa Relay for Life was held in Welkom on Friday (06/02) and Saturday (07/02). In total 14 teams participated. This year’s event was very successful. About 300 people joined in at various stages of the relay, and Welkom’s St Andrew’s School entered a spirited and enthusiastic team. After a couple of years on the back burner, the relay will once again become an annual event in Welkom. Cansa plans to have the 2016 Relay for Life at the end of March 2016. Residents battle leaks, refuse problems Alet van der Walt
SERVICE DELIVERY is virtually non-existent in the Matjhabeng Municipality, with residents struggling with refuse removal, water and electricity supply, leaking pipes and overflowing sewerage systems, to name just a few. In Virginia refuse removal came to a standstill due to a shortage of refuse trucks and the non-payment of overtime to workers. Residents regularly battle to get municipal workers to attend to water leaks. Clean water sometimes flow into the veld for days or even months before leaks are fixed. In Hospitaal Park, Odendaalsrus,
residents go without electricity on a regular basis because the cables are old and need to be replaced. The Phomolong Township sometimes have to go without drinking water for days, while the foul smell of raw sewerage hangs in the air. In Thabong houses are flooded when it rains because the drainage system does not work properly. Residents accross the whole area struggle with low water-pressure, because municipal workers restrict the water flow in pipes to prevent old pipes from bursting. Overtime payment was stopped last year because workers abused the system. DA councillor Piet Botha told Vista the entire infrastructure is
so dilapidated that it is impossible for maintenance teams to work during normal hours only. However, sources claim that workers abuse the overtime system and allegations have been made that tractors and refuse trucks are sabotaged during the week. These trucks will then be fixed by Friday, so it is claimed, in order for workers to work during the weekend when they can claim overtime. DA councillor, André Styger, believes certain teams need to be allowed to do overtime work, but that it should be regulated. ) After numerous attempts, Vista failed to get the municipality to respond to these issues.

Developments handed over
THE executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Sebenzile Ngangelizwe, has officially handed over completed development projects in Matjhabeng worth R88 095 893. Last week he handed over the waste water treatment works in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus (R24 108 537), the satellite fire station in Mmamahabane, Ventersburg (R14 320 092), the Meloding taxi rank (R20 632 193) and the
Bronville taxi rank (R15 783 430). “As a municipality we are proud to have responded to the needs of our citizens and we will continue to do so. “We have already handed over a number of completed development projects this financial year and there are more to come before the end of the 2014-’15 financial year,” says Ngangelizwe.
Summit to inspire growth THE Lejweleputswa District Municipality will be hosting the Local Economic Development Strategy Review Summit from 26 to 27 February at the Kingdom Academy. “The purpose of the summit is to provide a platform for a strategic engagement of key stakeholders for the development of strategic priorities for economic development, facilitating sustainable economic growth and reducing growing unemployment,” says Khaya Mqeke, communications manager. The strategy will be done in line with the identification and prioritisation of key economic sectors and opportunities that will be profiled and implemented by both
the Free State Growth and Development Strategy (FSGDS) and the National Development Plan (NDP). All municipalities will then be required to profile and prioritise economic development initiatives in their respective areas. “We will then engage relevant development, financial and donor institutions to assist with undertaking feasibility studies and develop bankable business plans for funding these initiatives in all the five local municipalities,” says Mqeke. Around 400 delegates from national, provincial and local development institutions are expected to attend.

JANNIE WESSELS, die eerste prokureur in Welkom, wat die naweek dood is.
’n MAN wat diep spore in die Vrystaatse Goudveld gelaat het en ’n legende in sy eie tyd was, Jannie Wessels (89), is die naweek oorlede. Dié ikoon was die eerste prokureur in Welkom en het die firma Wessels en Smith tot stand gebring. Wessels en sy vrou, Charlotte, wat in 1949 getroud is, het in 1950 op aandrang van Anglo American na Welkom verhuis. Hy het onder meer die mynreus se regsake gehanteer. “Hoewel hy hard gewerk het, was hy ook by die gemeenskap betrokke. Hy was onder meer lid van die destydse dorperaad, was president van die Rotary-klub en hy het diep spore by die Rovers-rugbyklub gelaat. Hy was ook ’n kranige gholfspeler en lid van Sages. Sy vrou sê hy was meer as tien jaar siek en moes geruime tyd voortdurend versorg word. Dit was ’n taak wat sy vrou en sy argitekseun, André, met liefde verrig
het. Hulle het egter ’n verpleegkundige gehad wat bedags gehelp het. Die egpaar het mekaar op skool in Bloemfontein ontmoet. Hy was in Grey-kollege en sy in Eunice. Albei was kranige tennisspelers. Die egpaar het drie kinders, John (63), ’n prokureur in Plettenbergbaai, André (61) en Karin Stander (54), wat ’n argitek in Australië is. Daar is ook sewe kleinkinders. Een van hulle is Steven Wessels wat op Paasmaandag 21 April 2014 dood is. Sy lyk is in die Torontopan gekry. Jannie word ook deur vier agterkleinkinders oorleef. ’n Vyfde enetjie is op pad. ’n Roudiens word volgende Woensdag (18/02) om 10:00 uit die Methodistekerk in Welkom gehou. Karin moet van Australië af kom, John is nou op ’n bootreis en keer eers volgende Maandag terug na Suid-Afrika. Jannie se suster Lucille (79) van Port Alfred sal ook die diens bywoon.

Become financially responsible EVYN THORNE, president of the Matjhabeng Ratepayers Association (MRA): THE Matjhabeng Ratepayers Association is not a political organisation or an association of lobbyists, despite the vague opinion of some residents. The MRA is a concerned group of residents who, together with property owners, pay their way in society. They are extremely disturbed by the way the bureaucrats wastefully spend public money and collude with tenderpreneurs to enrich themselves at the expense of the community. Individuals who belong to the MRA volunteer their services and expertise and are not remunerated. They do so out of selflessness and love for the community. The fears and frustration being endured by all residents of Matjhabeng are: Integrity of municipal accounts. Leaking water pipes and the
cost of the losses. High electricity tariffs Sewerage problems. What really bothers Matjhabeng consumers is the lack of foresight and appreciation for the factors that are needed to turn the tide of disinvestment and decay in our towns and cities. Unemployment is rife. It is not viable for businesses to recruit and employ in an environment where there are no incentives and where the cost of electricity, rates and services are increasing at a rate greater than the return on investment. Heads of department in the municipality are out of touch with their staff needs and what it takes to maintain and grow a business. Informal one-man businesses cannot employ large workforces which will grow the local economy. The local authority X in terms of the Municipal Systems Act and the Municipal Finance Act X is
obliged to act in the public interest. Is this happening? Every municipal manager that has been employed in Matjhabeng since 2001 has either died or disappeared out of favour with the ruling party, or resigned after being involved in some form of misappropriation. Ratepayers desire honest, hardworking, well-qualified individuals who are prepared to improve the life of every resident. All that consumers expect from their political leaders are policies that are implemented in the interest of good governance. All residents of Matjhabeng are invited to attend the Ratepayers Association meeting on 19 February at the Goldfields Casino and become more responsible for the matters affecting their future financial and investment decisions. KABELDIEWE is verlede Donderdag verras en in besit van 91 kg Telkomkabel betrap. Een van die diewe is deur Pierre Kruger en Mar chant Jacobs gevang terwyl twee ander daarin geslaag het om weg te kom.
SIX suspects, wanted in connection with armed robbery, sexual offences, possession of an unlicenced firearm, business robbery and possession of suspected stolen goods, were arrested by the police. The Welkom and Cluster Trio Task Team under leadership of Capt. Ernest Hantsi managed to arrest the six men wanted for crimes committed in Bronville, Thabong, Welkom and Virginia. A firearm, a live round of
ammunition, two pairs of security trousers and jacket, a hack-saw and two blades, a pair of gloves, cellphones and a knife were also confiscated. Suspects Tsepo Victor Mothobesoane (30), Nathaniel Mosebi Mohajane (35), Tefo Hlalele (27), Mthimkhulu Paul Thobela (40), Mosa Mokoena (26) and Thabiso Letela (22) have appeared in court and will remain in custody pending their bail applications.

Two men wanted after hijacking THE police are looking for two men in connection with the hijacking of a Chinese man. The Chinese national, known as W Zhuang, was allegedly busy taking bets from local people. He would select a winning number and the person to whom the winning number belongs would receive the winning jackpot. The man stopped in front of a
house in Kutlwanong and was busy selecting the winning number when he and his assistant were attacked. One of the assailants drew a firearm and demanded cash. He then fired shots in the direction of the Chinese man before forcing him from his vehicle. The suspects then fled with the vehicle which was later found abandoned. The victim was
admitted to hospital and a case of hijacking was opened. The suspects are still at large. One of them was wearing a T-shirt with black and brown stripes and spoke Zulu, while the second one wore a blue T-shirt and was of slender build. Anybody with information can call Capt. Community work programme changes lives Alet van der Walt
EVER wondered who those workers in the orange uniforms are? They are not prisoners or municipal workers. They are CWP workers. The public is not well informed about the work of the
Community Work Programme (CCWP), says Thomas Macingwane, a CWP consultant. More than a million South Africans are part of the CWP. This programme’s main objective is to employ people who will otherwise struggle to survive financially. In Matjhabeng, 3 000 people,
mostly women, are employed by the CWP. Thomas believes the CWP helps to relieve the plight of poor communities every day. In total 5 000 people in the Lejweleputswa region work for the CWP. South Africans of all races can join this programme. CWP workers earn R76 per day and work eight days per month. This income, totalling R608 per month, makes a huge difference in the lives of impoverished people, says Thomas. These workers are active in helping schools, clinics and other community facilities to clean its premises.
Vegetable gardens are established and the products are shared amongst the needy. CWP agents identify worthy projects in communities which is then used to employ CWP workers. Providing a small income is not the only objective of the CWP. Participants also regularly attend skills development courses where they receive certificates. The aim is to help them find permanent work in the private sector. The CWP provides a safety net for poor people while it also helps
them to develop skills, says Thomas. The aim of the CWP is to provide skilled labour to the private sector while giving unemployed people valuable tools. As a CWP agent, Thomas identifies people who need to join the CWP while he also helps people to obtain social grants. Child-headed households often need assistance to get grants. Thomas says he loves his work because, through the CWP, he can make a difference in the daily lives of the less fortunate.

Baroque melodies THE Charl du Plessis Trio will bring their acclaimed Baroqueswing production to Welkom’s Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre on 22 April. Baroqueswing transfigures the music of Bach, Handel, Scarlatti and Vivaldi to the 21st Century in new arrangements for the jazz trio. The sophisticated sound of Baroque music is blended in a most subtle way with the excitement and rhythmic vitality of jazz to create a new listening experience. Famous melodies like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Bach’s Air on a G String and Handel’s popular Largo are some of the works included on the programme. Du Plessis is a Steinway Artist and was awarded Best Debut Production at the Vryfees Arts Festival in 2013 for Baroqueswing. Tours to Switzerland and China
have transported the crossover music of this ensemble, featuring Werner Spies on double bass and Hugo Radyn on drums, to new parts of the world. This musical unit was also awarded a Sama award for their Pimp My Piano CD and DVD. This concert will be presented as a fundraiser to service the theatre’s Steinway concert grand piano. This instrument is worth R2,8 million and will be taken care of by Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos from Cape Town. Baroqueswing is aimed at the classic music connoisseur and the Live CD recording of the Swiss performance will be on sale at the Welkom performance. Bookings are open at R120 per person. St Andrew’s presents musical ONE of the best-known of all musicals and arguably one of the most difficult ones on stage, West Side Story, will be presented by the St Andrew’s School, Welkom, this year. “The musical will be even more professionally presented at an even higher level than our productions in the past. We are also proud that the show’s production involves only St Andrew’s students,” says Hansie Jordaan, production manager and musical director. Rehearsals for the show have already started. Jaco Joubert is the director and the choreography will be done by Candice Charman. A breath-taking set design has been created by Dulci Harris and all art work
and set-building is being prepared by Sandy Barnard and her St Andrew’s art department and aided by parents of the school. “This production has a unique modern twist, making it excitingly relevant to the modern day lives of today’s young people,” says Jordaan. A live orchestra will accompany the show. “We are urgently looking for instrumentalists who are willing to play in the orchestra.” Any musicians who are interested, must contact Jordaan at the St Andrew’s School in Welkom. Striders’ founder sets new record Molly Green THE founder of the Virginia Striders Road Running Club, Julian Fenn (63), has set a new record by completing 900 time trials. He is now aiming for 1 000. The founding of the Virginia Striders in 1982 was the brainchild of Julian (Jules) and his wife, Sharon. The Fenns moved to Virginia from Durban where he ran for the Savages Athletics Club. He decided to form a club in Virginia so that he would not have to travel to Welkom and back each time he went to run time trials. The founders’ meeting was held on 15 July 1982 at the Harvinia Club in Virginia. The first committee meeting was held on 11 October 1982 and the Virginia Striders were out of the blocks. The first race was a 21,1 km event and was
held on 12 March 1983. A total of 184 runners took part. The club’s first Comrades runners in 1983 were Joan van Heerden, Basie Cloete, the late André Erasmus, Pat Nadauld, Eddie Prins, Nick Saaiman, Theresa Saaiman and Jules Fenn. Jules, Joan and Pat went on to run ten consecutive Comrades from 1983 until 1992 when they became members of the distinguished elite green number club. The Virginia Striders won Athletics Free State’s best administrative club treasured award on three occasions in the 1990’s and thus set the standard for other Free State clubs. Jules went on to serve on the club’s governing body for the next 20 years, of which he was chairman eight times. He was also a member of Athletics Free State’s
management committee and represented the Free State as team manager on three occasions. Jules, now an honorary lifelong member, still keeps a vigilant eye on the progress of the club and its members. Every time he runs a time trial, he sets a new club record. This now stands at 903, with each run being 8 km. He has run 467 races of various distances since 1979 of which 40 were marathons and 33 were ultra’s. He achieved permanent race numbers for the Mielie Marathon, the Cherry Mountain race in Ficksburg, the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, the Two Oceans Half Marathon and the Comrades Marathon. Jules is still fondly known in Virginia as “Flash’’ at the modern day Harmony Striders. He will celebrate his 64th bithday on 31 March and is still going strong.

Seabelo Senatla is op sy beurt as Saru se sewesspeler van die jaar aangewys. Seabelo is ook in die afdeling vir die beste drie benoem. Eugene van Wyk, hoofbestuurder van die Griffons-rugbyunie, het Boela Midrand toe gevat. Hy sê vir Boela was dit ’n trotse oomblik. “Hy het ook daar gesê hy besef nou dit is nie maklik om ’n Springbok te word nie.” Seabelo se pa, Bery Senatla, is jammer dat sy seun nie die eerbewys persoonlik kon ontvang het nie. Seabelo is by die Blitsbokke en dié span neem die naweek aan die volgende been van die HSBC-toernooi in Las Vegas deel.
