Breakthrough technology turns methane into power Marti Will
Pancake Tuesday THE learners of the St Andrew’s School, Welkom, celebrated Shrove Tuesday in the traditional way. Pancakes were baked from early morning and enjoyed by all. Shrove Tuesday occurs the first Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, usually 2 February or 9 March. It officially ends the season of Epiphany and is the vigil for the starting of Lent. The concept behind this practice is found in 1 Corinthians 9:27, where the Apostle Paul states: I buffet my body and make it my slave . . ." Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. As in contemporary times, food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk, and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next 40 days. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. Two kidnapped girls freed TWO young sex slaves, aged 12 and 14, who were already marked with tattoos by their captors, were released from a shack in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus, recently. The girls went missing three weeks earlier. Five men, who call themselves
the 300’s, were arrested. According to the police, the girls went missing on 26 January and police and family looked for the girls in vain. On 17 February the men released the girls. The police accompanied the girls to the shacks where they
were held and the two young girls pointed out the men. The gang targets young girls and abducts them to use them for sex. All five suspects, aged between 22 and 25 will appear in court soon. They will be charged with kidnapping and statutory rape.

IN breakthrough technology, Sibanye’s Beatrix Gold Mine outside of Welkom is transforming the silent killer, methane gas, into lifesaving free electricity. This highly explosive gas was responsible for killing 40 mineworkers between 1983 and 2001. Liemiso Molelengoane, communications officer for Beatrix Operations, says the mine has the highest methane emission rate of the mines in operation today. “This gas is unlocked during normal mining operations and released into the atmosphere where it acts as a potent greenhouse gas.” In 2006, the mine realised the potential to extract and flare the methane gas and entered into an agreement with Promethium Carbon to assist with the development and registration of a CDM project on its behalf. “This was to mitigate the global warming effects of the methane gas released by the mine,” she says. The Project Design Document (PDD), a requirement for the project registration, was approved by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in October 2008. This project was registered under the Clean Development Mechanism of the

Kyoto Protocol in April 2011. “The project had two phases, the first being the capturing and piping of the methane gas to the surface where it is flared whilst the second phase consisted of the installation and operation of an electrical power generation plant.” It was decided to capture the methane gas released by the mine’s south section. This is the area with the most active methane sources and highest methane emission rate. Molelengoane says the challenge was to capture approximately 50% of the gas released in this area and to transport it over a distance of 3 600 m underground at a depth of 866 m, and up a vertical shaft to the site where the methane gas is flared. “The mine successfully commissioned the flare, capable of burning off 400 l/s of methane gas in May 2011, flaring a constant flow of 260 l/s of methane gas. “It was always the intention of the mine to generate electricity from the methane gas. The mine commenced with the second phase of the project in 2013 after ensuring a stable methane gas flow from underground.” The electric power generation capacity is 2MW. The mine plans to increase it to 4MW during 2015 by expanding the underground methane gas capturing area.
