Die bakkie is dieselfde dag teruggevind. Die Donderdagmiddag was die Sandrivier-padstal op die N1 ’n teiken toe twee mans ook hier ’n vuurwapen op die eienaar gerig het. Die een rower het oor die traliewerk by die toonbank gespring, maar die bejaarde eienaar kon darem daarin slaag om ’n paniekknoppie te druk. Sy het toe aan die rowers gesê daar is reeds hulp op pad waarna hulle op die vlug geslaan het. Hulle het egter die vuurwapen en ’n selfoon verloor. Danksy die doeltreffende gebruik van WhatsApp is die boere se veiligheidsnetwerk

in die omgewing blitsig geaktiveer. Die boere het saam met die polisie gewerk om vier verdagtes buite Meloding aan te keer. Vinnige en uitmuntende speurwerk van die Thabonggroep se trio-taakspan onder kapt. Ernest Hantsi het aan die lig gebring dat dieselfde groep mans ook by die rooftog in Virginia betrokke was. ’n Sekuriteitswag van Meloding is by sy huis in Meloding ondervra. More se selfoon en bakkiesleutels is in die man se besit gekry. Die polisie het ook ’n houer met gassilinders en windbukspatrone by die verdagte gekry. Dit is geskik vir die gaspistool wat deur die mans by die stalletjie laat val is. Die vyf mans is tans in aanhouding en het ook reeds in Ventersburg in die hof verskyn. Genl.maj. Lerato Molale het die boere vir hul hulp bedank en gesê sulke goeie spanwerk tussen die SAPD en plaaslike gemeenskappe sal grootliks help om misdadigers te verdryf.

DIE lopende bankrekening van die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit in Welkom is die tweede keer in net meer as drie weke met ’n lasbrief van die Vrystaatse hooggeregshof bevries, dié keer vir skuld van R10,6 miljoen. Dit kom nadat sy munisipale bestuurder, adv. Mothusi Lepheane, nie vir ’n afspraak opgedaag het om oor dié skuld aan die beslote korporasie, Prozel 105, wat as Goldfield Radiators & Mining Supplies handel dryf, te onderhandel nie. Dié BK van Jan Bezuidenhout, ’n bekende Goudveldse sakeman, het al in Oktober verlede jaar ’n vonnis by verstek vir die skuld teen die munisipaliteit gekry. Daarna het die munisipaliteit verskeie hofaansoeke ingedien, totdat hy die afgelope Donderdag (05/03) alles teruggetrek en onderneem het om Dinsdag (10/03) oor afbetaling te onderhandel. Pieter Schuurman van Hill McHardy en Herbst-prokureurs, vir Prozel, sê toe Lepheane twee uur ná die afgesproke tyd nog nie vir die onderhandelings in Welkom opgedaag het nie, het hy na Bloemfontein teruggery. Daar het hy ’n

lasbrief vir eksekusie op die Absa-rekening vir R10 696 265 plus rente en regskoste laat uitreik en deur die balju aan die bank laat beteken. Dit is die rekening waarin die munisipaliteit se inkomste uit water, elektrisiteit en belastings betaal word en waaruit bedryfsuitgawes en salarisse betaal word. Goldfield Radiators het ’n kontrak met die munisipaliteit waarvolgens hy munisipale voertuie versien en herstel. Vir dié skuld het die balju reeds werktuie van die munisipaliteit opgeskryf om verkoop te word. Bezuidenhout hou verder ook ’n klomp watertenkvragmotors, voorlaaiers, trekkers en vragmotors vir vullisverwydering, wat klaar herstel is, in retensie vir die geld wat die munisipaliteit aan hom skuld. ) Middel verlede maand het die maatskappy Down Touch Investments ook dié bankrekening van die munisipaliteit met ’n hofbevel vir R6,5 miljoen se uitstaande skuld laat bevries. Luidens ’n hofverklaring van Johan Cronjé, besturende direkteur van Down Touch, werk dié maatskappy aan ’n kontrak van R59 miljoen om die strate en sypaadjies van Matjhabeng te herseël en herstel.

Stoffel en Magda het nadat ’n huis in Hakerstraat afgebrand het, die erf gekoop. Hulle bly in ’n buitegebou wat nie deur die brand geraak is nie. Die berg bourommel van die afgebrande huis is ’n kopseer vir die egpaar. Op ’n dag het iemand die voorstel gemaak dat hulle dalk deur die talle slaggate te vul, van die allemintige klomp rommel ontslae kan raak. Met ’n waentjie wat broer Nikkie spesiaal laat bou het, karwei hulle die bourommel en vul so die gate op. Magda, wat die beste kan sien, loop voor en lei die tweelingbroers. Die waentjie vol gebreekte bakstene en pleistersement word teen ’n flinke pas deur die dorp getrek om slaggate te vul. Soms help Niekie se vrou, Francina, hulle deur die waentjie met haar Golfie te sleep,

I AM appealing to residents of Bedelia. I like to be active and that’s why I like running. Every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday I’m on the road. I normally use Long Road, Stateway, Constantia and Riebeeckstad roads and sometimes the Odendaalrus-Allanridge road to do my training. I want to share a terrible incident that happened to me on Saterday, 21 February, as I was running along Long Road. After passing the Fredelia circle, I saw a pit bull dog coming towards me from the opposite direction. I knew immediately that I was in trouble as these dogs are vicious. As the dog charged towards me. I saw a four-plus-one taxi approacing from the same direction. I then decided to use the taxi to my advantage by crossing the road regardless of the distance between the taxi and myself. Fortunately the taxi driver saw my predicament and drove towards the dog

using the hooter to confuse it. Eventually the dog retreated. I could then continue my jog. I honestly want to thank that taxi driver for saving my life. My humble request to all the dog owners, particularly those on the main streets, is to please make sure that their gates are locked at all times – especially the pit bull dog owners. Do not risk the lives of innocent people by breeding these dogs and not keeping them under control. We really want to use this road in preparation for the Comrades ultramarathon because it is one of the safest roads for runners. Ons as inwoners het nie geweet dat dit Saterdag tot lank ná 22:00 nog so sou aangaan nie en toe ook sommer die hele Sondag deur, tot ongeveer 22:00. Van die gaste het selfs, met ’n wynglas of ander soort glase, op die sypaadjie hul gate uit geniet. Op ’n versoek of die musiek ’n bietjie sagter gesit kon word, is gesê: Nee, dit is ’n

Suspects arrested during patrol MEMBERS of the Public Order Police Task Team were busy with a routine patrol when they saw a suspicious-looking white Toyota Corolla. The car was travelling on the Kroonstad Welkom road and the police instructed the driver to stop beside the road. The driver and his four passengers got out of the car and they were all searched. The car was also searched and a Norinco firearm with a magazine, six live rounds, five cellphones and a brown envelope containing six papers were confiscated. All five suspects are between the ages of 29 and 35. They will appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Provincial commissioner, Lt. Gen. Thabethe Mpembe, congratulated the police members on a job well done.

Weapons, drugs confiscated THE Welkom Public Order Police Task Team has managed to arrest six men on two different charges. The Task Team was doing crime prevention patrols in Thabong when they noticed a male leaving a house in Ntsonga Street, Themba. He was searched and half a tablet believed to be mandrax, was found in his possession. The man was arrested and the house was approached by the police. Three men were

found inside the house and searched. All three had tablets in their possession. They were charged for possession of drugs. A total of 22 and a half tablets were seized by the police. The four suspects aged between 22 and 26 years already appeared in court. The team also arrested two men earlier that day carrying Okapi knives. The knives were confiscated and they were charged for possession of dangerous weapons.

Rapist ‘prophet’ jailed A UGANDAN man and fake prophet, Muballak Nsamba (26), was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment after raping a woman who sought his advice. Nsamba was sentenced in the Virginia Court for Sexual Offences. The 24-year-old woman was raped in the Gauche Building in Bullion Street in July last year. She consulted with the so-called prophet earlier and went back for a follow-up consultation. When the woman entered the consultation room, it was dimly lit and she was told to undress so that he could relieve her of her problems. She obeyed the “prophet” and he then raped her. After the ordeal she heard voices inside the room and she was told that it was the ancestors telling her not to tell anyone about the incident, otherwise she would die. The woman testified that she was initially approached by a “Nigerianlooking man” who told her that he could solve her problems. On the first consultation she was told to bring along R700 with the next visit. A box filled with money was shown to her and she was promised this money. However, on the next consultation she was raped by Nsamba. The victim kept quiet about the incident until her sister realised that R700 had been withdrawn from her bank account. The sister confronted the victim who then spilled the beans on the whole incident and the case was reported to the police. WO Jeremane Motaung of the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit was assigned the docket. He arrested the suspect at his consultation rooms. Lots of flyers with different names of traditional healers, eight cellphones, a laptop and buckets with a foulsmelling watery substances which looked like muti, were found in the room. Magistrate Botsile Lefenya sentenced the Ugandan national on Monday. Pogisho Mabale prosecuted. Thabong Cluster Commander, Maj. Gen. Lerato Molale, warned the community about the many fake healers who prey on the vulnerable.

DIT was weer tyd vir die jaarlikse Kansa-shavathon by die Goudveld-Hoërskool. Die onderwysers en leerlinge moes oudergewoonte hul hare skeer en kleurvol spuit om geld vir kanker in te samel. Vanjaar het hierdie dag egter ’n ander kleurtjie gekry. ’n Groep dapper onderwysers het die skool uitgedaag om R10 000 vir Kansa in te samel. In ruil daarvoor sou hulle hul hare afskeer. Die kinders, leerkragte en die gemeenskap het saamgespan en nie net is die R10 000-kerf gehaal nie, maar hulle het nagenoeg R15 600 ingesamel – dus moes die hare waai. Karen Fourie, bemarker van die skool, sê: “Elkeen van ons ken iemand na aan ons, of in ons vriendekring, wat gebuk gaan onder chemoterapie en al die nare dinge en vrese wat met kanker gepaard gaan. Baie van ons ken ook die seer om iemand aan die dood af te staan wat die stryd teen hierdie siekte verloor het. “So, baie dankie aan al die onnies wat bereid was om hul hare vir kanker af te skeer. Aan die kinders en ander vriende van Goutieland wat bereid is om poenskop of sonder ’n poniestert rond te loop – julle is sterre. Dankie vir elke rand wat deur ons skool en gemeenskap ingesamel is. Dit is mense soos julle wat wys hoe die liefde nou eintlik behoort te wees – onbaatsugtig,” sê Fourie.

Hospice shop offers plenty SINCE the reopening of the newly-renovated Butterfly Box at the Goldfields Hospice in Welkom in October 2014, many new customers have been attracted. This hospice’s second-hand shop has been operating for almost 20 years and is situated on their premises at 58 Montague Street (Rose House), Bedelia. This “boutique” is open every Tuesday morning and is run by dedicated volunteers and staff. All goods are donated by members of the community and local stores. Profits made are used to render a free service to terminally-ill patients. If you would like to support hospice you can donate any household item (clothing, bedding, kitchenware and so on) in a re-sellable condition, or visit the shop on Tuesdays from 08:00 to 11:00. Items can be delivered at the Goldfields Hospice, 58 Montague Street, Bedelia, Welkom, between 08:30 and 15:30.

NEW poster Welkom's Got Talent 2015

THE call-back auditions for Welkom’s Got Talent will take place on Saturday (14/03) at the Goldields Casino. Over the past five weeks 70 contestants have been shortlisted to proceed to the next round of call-back auditions. They each received a special invitation to this exclusive round. It is, however, another elimination round. “It is a tough competition this year with so many amazingly talented individuals competing for the title of Welkom’s Got Talent winner, as well as the many amazing prizes lined up,” says Tanya Lloyd, Goldfields Mall general manager. The main prize this year is R20 000 in cash, R5 000 in fashion vouchers sponsored by the Just Property Group Goldfields Mall, as well as the opportunity to perform as an opening act at one of the Goldfields Casino’s scheduled concerts within six months after winning the contest. All sound requirements for this performance will be arranged by the casino, as well as any other costs relevant to the performance. This weekend’s audition is a closed round, so unfortunately only contestants may attend, but the first public rounds will take place mid-April.

Here are a few things to remember for Saturday’s contestants: ) Call-back auditions will be hosted at the Goldfields Casino on Saturday (14/03) at 09:00. ) Contestants should report to the auditioning venue no later than 08:45. ) Contestants, including band members, may only enter once. ) Music, backtracks or instruments should be provided by the entrants themselves. ) At auditions contestants must perform one item not exceeding 45 seconds. ) All judging will be done on an equal basis, therefore groups and solos will be judged together. ) The successful contestants will be notified telephonically on Monday (16/03) and will then proceed to workshop day. The final round is scheduled for Saturday, 23 May. Vincent Bones, the winner of last year’s South African Idols,, will also be performing at the finals. Production looks at abuse THE NEWSPAPER, directed and choreographed by Tshepiso Da’Silva Phetlhu, is an African dance production with physical theatre elements. It was conceived by Motlatsi Khotle, and later developed into a 45-minute theatre production. The Newspaper is produced by Catch Fire WayaWaya, a dance group based in Thabong in Welkom, specialising in Afrofusion dance, a combination of Pantsula, hip-hop, Sbujwa, Tswana, Marabi and Kofifi styles. Pieter Jacobs, CEO of the Arts and Culture Trust (ACT), says: “We are confident that through the universal language of dance these new works will enrich the lives of not only the artists from these severely under-served areas, but the communities that live in them too. “The ACT is delighted to be in a position to offer access to the arts to South Africans who would otherwise not have had such an opportunity.” This project receives financial backing from the ACT. The Newspaper premiered as part of the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State’s (Pacofs) Tsoho International

Artist in ‘homeland’

SILENT P, or Paseka John Shelane, is a bornand-bred son of the Free State. He comes from Bothaville. After a stay on the other side of the Vaal River this artist decided to return and settle in Welkom. He sees the Free State as his “homeland”. Silent P is an entertainer and artist who knows how to bring energy to the stage.

CATCH FIRE WAYAWAYA Community Dance & Drama Festival in 2014. Phetlhu was appointed by Pacofs to intensively rework the production. The work looks at the subject of abuse in the family unit, using

the motif of a newspaper as an iconic link to the storyline. The production will be staged at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre in Welkom on 19 (19:00) and 20 March (18:30). Tickets will cost R30 each.

In Rustenburg and Klerksdorp he was known as a musician who could draw huge crowds to music festivals and street parties. In 2004 Silent P started to release singles of house music and was soon known for popular tracks like Let’s Soo . . . Sedibeng Water our Water Services Provider notied the Municipality of the presence of Taste and Odour in our Drinking water “The phenomenon leading to taste and odour problems is normally associated with the presence of certain blue-green algae. The algal blooms normally occur when temperatures are high and in waters enriched with nutrients. The water in the middle Vaal River consists of a large fraction of discharges from Wastewater Plants, Mines, Industries and agricultural practices, resulting in the water being enriched with nutrients. An earthy musty taste, associated with the presence of Oscillatoria simplicissima and Microcystis sp. (both Blue Green Algae), is currently being detected in the source water of both Balkfontein and Virginia Water Treatment Plants. Several consumer complaints, related to bad tastes and odours in the drinking water, is a phenomenon that occurs every year. This is due to the presence of Geosmin (4,8adimethyldecalin-4a-ol or 4,8a-dimethyl-decahydronaphthalen-4a-ol) and 2-Methylisoborneol (MIB) resulting from algal activities in the raw water, most notably the Blue Green algae.

Geosmin/MIB is produced by these microbes under normal circumstances but the concentration in the water is increased 25 times when these microbes die during conventional water treatment processes. Although the presence of these blue green algae in water could be associated with the presence of algal toxins, the concentrations at which the water could pose health risk are very high. Humans can detect the Geosmin/MIB levels at concentrations as low as 7 ng/l; however, at such low concentrations no health risk is posed.
