Virginia’s fire truck not available to fight blaze at house Marti Will
HELP arrived too late for the house at 9 Inanda Road, Virginia, that was destroyed in a fire on the afternoon of Friday, 26 June. Neighbours tried desperately to help the home owner douse the fire, but to no avail. They are up in arms as despite numerous phone calls to the Virginia and Welkom Fire Departments pleading for help, the fire truck arrived too late. Freddie Khuze, acting fire chief: Fire and Emergency Services, says on 25 June, the day before, the chairperson of the commonage Delportsrus Matjhabeng municipal farm made a request for water to be delivered to the farm. “This amounted to 20 000 litres of water. It is a crisis because the Harmony Mine does not supply the farm with water any more. “We gave them a quote for R944,83 for the required service. This included charges for personnel per hour, kilometre usage and charges for water per kilolitre,” says Khuze. He says the farmer needed the water for seven shepherds, 540 cattle, 320 sheep, 220 goats, four horses and basic services. “I instructed the Virginia fire crew to fill the reservoir on the farm with water,” says Khuze. He says the Fire Department performs special duties such as the refilling of swimming pools, the refilling of road construction trucks, draining swimming pools, rescuing trapped animals and many more. “We chose the Virginia unit because the fire engine has a bigger water tank capacity (4 500 litres). They needed to shuttle five times between the farm and the Bedelia fire hydrant (the farm is 8 km outside of Welkom on the Bultfontein Road),” he says. The Virginia control room received the 9 Inanda Road fire report on Friday, 26 June, at 14:52. The Odendaalsrus fire unit responded. They arrived on the scene at 15:50. The fire truck travels at 40 km/h. Dirk Smit, DA councillor for Virginia, says he was made aware of the fire, and also contacted the Fire Department. “I was told the fire truck was attending to a fire on a farm somewhere. Early Saturday morning (27/06) I was informed that the real reason the truck had not been available was that it had been delivering

Tot in 1986 het sy die skakelbord van die polisie in Welkom gehanteer. “Ek is daardie jaar Pretoria toe waar ek my man, Gerhard, ontmoet het. Dit was liefde met die eerste oogopslag.” Annelie kon effens sien, maar ’n dokter het per ongeluk haar retinas met ’n te sterk lig gebrand en nou is sy heeltemal blind. “Ek kan soms net ’n oomblik sien wanneer ’n lig aangeskakel word.” Omdat sy en haar broer ook ’n

Annelie (62) was in 1956 drie jaar oud toe haar ouers, Andries en Katrientjie, van Senekal na Welkom verhuis het. Wyle Andries was die eerste klavierstemmer in Welkom. Hy het die kontrak gekry om al die skoolklaviere in die Noord-Vrystaat te stem. Sy en Fanus (60) was leerlinge aan die skool vir blindes in Worcester. Hulle het in 1972 daar gematrikuleer. “Ek het daar geleer om skakelbordwerk te doen. Fanus het aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) gestudeer waar hy die graad LLB behaal het. Hy was later ’n bekende prokureur in Welkom.” Fanus se vrou, Johanna, kan
spiersiekte het, kan sy nie ’n gidshond hê nie. Sy het wel ’n loopraam. “Ek het my blindheid aanvaar. Ek was nog nooit bitter daaroor nie en ek geniet dit om met my probleem te spot.” Haar man is sowat twee weke gelede aan kanker dood. Haar buurvrou en vriendin Marina van der Merwe help haar. “Sonder haar hulp en bystand weet ek nie hoe ek die mas sou opkom nie. “Ek weet nie wat ek nou gaan doen nie. “Ek wil nie in ’n kamertjie in ’n tehuis gaan sit nie en ek kan ook nie alleen bly nie.” Haar skoonfamilie van Pretoria bly tydelik by haar. Dié klein vroutjie ken Welkom en sy sirkels baie goed. Al wat haar erg omkrap, is die gebrek aan straatname. “Dit is baie moeilik om rigting aan te dui wanneer die strate nie name het nie.” Sy is baie lief vir musiek, van klassieke tot country-musiek. Sy lees ook graag boeke in braille. Haar selfoon het ’n spraakfunksie en sy kan SMS’e ontvang.

Hanteer werkers versigtig WANNEER ’n mens werkers het wat nie aan dieselfde kultuurgroep as jy behoort nie, is dit belangrik om te weet hoe om hul kultuur en menswees te alle tye te respekteer. Werkgewers wat nie hierop bedag is nie, kan verhoudinge ernstig vertroebel en selfs hul veiligheid in gedrang bring. Mense wat werkers voor ander verneder, neerhalende opmerkings maak en mense se menswaardigheid so aantas, moet twee keer dink. Dit kan maklik tot vergeldingsoptrede lei. In die Afrika-kultuur is dit onaanvaarbaar om mense te pla wanneer hulle eet. Moet nooit jou werkers rondstuur tydens etenstyd nie. Waak daarteen om sommer net geld van werkers se salaris af te trek. Verduidelik aan jou werker sy salaris, wat afgetrek word en waarom. Maak seker almal is tevrede wanneer jy salarisse betaal het. Moenie geld aan werkers leen nie. Dit skep dikwels konflik met die een wat die geld geleen het. As die nood groot is en jy kan nie anders nie, maak seker dat die werker bereid sal wees om die geld terug te betaal en ook iets ekstra te doen of ’n klein rente by te betaal. Waak teen enige optrede wat jou ’n teiken kan maak van boosdoeners, al gaan dit net oor inligting oor jou doen en late wat op onskuldige wyse oorgedra kan word. Moet byvoorbeeld nooit die indruk wek dat daar geld in die huis is nie. Wees versigtig om uit jou huis handel te dryf. Kontant in die huis bly ’n groot risiko. Wees altyd bedag op mense wat oorvriendelik voorkom. Die makste hond byt dikwels die seerste. Luister na subtiele waarskuwings van werkers. Wanneer hulle vir jou iets sê soos jy moet die huis se deure sluit, kan dit ’n waarskuwing wees. Moenie spog oor vuurwapens of oor hoeveel geld jy het nie. Dit kan jou ’n teiken maak. Wanneer jy iemand moes afdank, kan jy ook ’n risiko-tyd binnegaan.

REVEREND NDUMISO WILLIAM MAKHASI, Welkom: ON Saturday, 13 June, my son Mlamli Makhasi was stabbed in the chest and sustained a head injury. He was unconscious and taken to the Bongani Hospital. He was seen by a doctor, stitched up by a male nurse and discharged by this male nurse. On Sunday, 14 June, I found my son in the emergency area with bandages, naked and only covered with a sheet. He was registered as an unknown patient and received no pain killers, no drip and no food. When I directed an enquiry to the doctor in charge at the time, Dr. M. Gomezulu, he told me that the boy had been seen by the night-shift doctor and discharged. A male nurse intervened and instructed me to bring a wheelchair so that I could take my son home as he had been discharged the previous night. I was amazed. Why is a patient with such a dangerous stab wound lying in the casualty ward with no treatment and for ± 19 hours unattended, with no treatment and no care given? At about 18:45 I went back to Mgomezulu
and explained that I could not take a patient home who had not been able to speak and respond when I talked to him. The same male nurse addressed me as “old man” and said to me there was nothing that they could do. Theys said I had to come and fetch my son on Monday, 15 June, when he would be discharged. On the Monday at about 09:00 I went back to the Bongani Hospital where I demanded to see senior management. There was no member of senior management in the office. I waited for about 30 minutes for a Mr. Kgaile. I was told he was acting chief executive officer (CEO) of the hospital. I told my story and Kagile and a matron, Mpitsi, apologised to me. After I had complained, the matron and the CEO arranged for my son to be taken to a ward. The next day I went to the ward again and was informed that my son had a brain injury. It is my understanding that this could have been avoided if my son had received proper treatment. This leaves me with no other option but to legally charge the Bongani Hospital for the damage and injury my son suffered. ) Letter shortened. all hope in the capability and commitment of police officers. Under the leadership of Capt. Ernest Hantsi, the task team revived the trust we had in the police as they worked zealously to serve justice. My house was broken into and goods were stolen (a TV set, a PlayStation 2, a laptop and an I-pad). With great precision and efficacy, Hantsi’s team recovered my I-pad and PS 2 within 48 hours. Hantsi personally left the funeral of his colleague to pursue a lead regarding my television and laptop, which were transported to Johannesburg, but ensured that they were returned to me that same day. I applaud your excellence and commitment to your cause. More police officers should follow your example. We are ever grateful for your hard workto recover our goods and arrest the perpetrators.

Dit is na my mening baie duidelik dat die mense van die staatsinstellings nie altyd gekwalifiseerd is vir die werk wat hulle doen nie. Daar is ook ’n knaende tekort aan dokters en personeel by die staatsinstellings. Ek bid die mense van die Naledi-kliniek seën en voorspoed toe op die goeie werk wat hulle doen. Ek hoop daar kom nog sulke plekke.
Meter readers warn residents THE contracted meter reader company Jager Tech has issued a serious warning to Matjhabeng residents about people who do illegal disconnections at homes. According to André Olivier of Jager Tech, former contractors of the company are switching off electricity at residences in the area. The contractors tell residents that their accounts are in arears and then demand a bribe to reconnect it. It seems that
residents of Dagbreek are mostly targeted. According to Olivier the men who disconnect the electricity illegally are former contractors from Jager Tech. They still wear the company’s clothing and pretend to work for the company. Many of the people who are targeted are not even in arrears. Jager Tech does not do disconnections on behalf of the municipality and is only contracted to read the
electricity and water meters, Olivier says. Members of the public can phone the company at all times to make sure meter readers are legally contracted. If a bribe is demanded or if someone is threatened by a meter reader, residents can also phone the police. People can call Jager Tech on 057-355-1789 and ask to speak with management regarding disconnections.

Police make 195 arrests THE Welkom and Thabong trio task teams, lead by Capt. Ernest Hantsi, made 195 arrests recently. Arrests were made for cases of house robberies, car hijackings, business robberies and many others. Items such electrical appliances, unlicensed firearms, cellphones, an undisclosed amount of cash and a car were confiscated during the different operations held. During May the team went to Marikana and helped with an operation there. The team helped to arrest
231 people in the area. During the Marikana operation eight firearms, knives, knob-kieries, stolen property, liquor and an SAPS belt were confiscated. Four murder suspects were also arrested and they were also linked to several murder cases registered at Bronville, Welkom and North-West. The confiscated firearms were linked to the four murder suspects. The SAPS members as well as the task team were all congratulated by their seniors.

WITH 40, 30 and 20 years of service respectively, Neumann van Rooyen is celebrating the work anniversary of three of its directors this year. Johan Fourie has been practising as an attorney for 40 years, Henri van Rooyen for 30 years and André Styger for 20 years. Fourie was born and bred in Welkom and graduated from the University of the Free State (UFS) in 1971. He returned to Welkom in 1974 to complete his articles of clerkship. He specialises in debt collection, litigation, family and divorce law, and government law. Fourie has served as a councillor in the Matjhabeng Municipality since 2000. Van Rooyen obtained his BProc and LLB degrees from the UFS in 1984. He is an admitted attorney, notary and conveyancer and has been practising as such for the past 30 years. He is also a valuator for deceased estates and
specialises in general litigation in the Magistrate’s and High Court, commercial and criminal matters. Van Rooyen served as a councillor in the Matjhabeng Municipality from 1995 to 2012. He is a former president of the Law Society of the Free State, as well as the Law Society of South Africa. In 1995, Styger was admitted as one of the youngest attorneys, notaries and conveyancers at the time. He immediately entered into private practice and joined the predecessors of Neumann van Rooyen inc. in June 1995 and has since been practising in the firm’s Conveyancing, Commercial and Estate Department. He is an international speaker on business principles and has served as a councillor in the Matjhabeng Municipality since 2000. He further serves on various school and charity boards and is very involved in local community affairs.

BILLY BIG-EARS is specifically written to deal with the issues that children face on a daily basis all over the world. Children are facing bullying, teasing, cheating and absolute disrespect towards each other, and do not always know how to deal with these problems. So, in a fun and entertaining manner, and falling directly in line with the Caps outcome for the subjects Arts and Culture and Life Orientation, Billy Big-Ears teaches children not to discriminate, tease or bully others that happen to look a little different to themselves. Over and above these problems, human trafficking and child labour have also become prevalent in society today.
This production teaches children not to be misled by strangers and to help each other in these circumstances by means of calling an adult for help. All the above-mentioned is positively illustrated through drama, song and dance, which will leave the children singing with positive attitudes towards each other. Billy Big-Ears will be presented to all schools, gr. 1 to gr. 5, at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre on 28 to 30 July at 09:00 and 11:00. Sanca helps fight addiction
Youth programme: ) The programme is specifically developed for learners in schools, by the professional nurse and social auxiliary worker. ) Preventative programmes such as discussions about drugs and alcohol, values and making the right life choices, are introduced to schools. ) Learners who have used drugs and alcohol on school premises, or at home are referred to Sanca and included in therapeutic group sessions. ) These sessions are done on a weekly basis in the afternoons, to avoid interference with class and exam schedules. ) They comprise of five session, once a week and help to give the student a better understanding about drug and alcohol abuse and the tools to cope with peer pressure and maintain sobriety. ) Peer education training is also being implemented to teach students about drugs, basic counselling skills and to be positive role models. The cost of the training is R350 per student and consists of eight to ten students per session. Training lasts a week. Certificates are issued on completion of training.

Hospice shop needs goods THE Goldfields Hospice’s second-hand shop has been operating for almost 20 years and is situated on their premises at 58 Montague Street (Rose House) in Bedelia. This “boutique” is open every Tuesday morning. Profits from the shop are used to render a free service to terminally-ill patients in the Goldfields. Mathematics camps held for promising learners
THE Department of Basic Education and South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) through its Thuthuka Education Upliftment Fund (TEUF) will support Maths development camps during the winter. The best of teachers will train learners and provide valuable support to tackle
problematic mathematics topics in all its ramifications. These learners are selected based on their academic performance with a minimum of 60% in Mathematics, Science and Accounting. Since the inception of the maths development school camps in 2005, more than 100
students who were part of these camps in previous years started studying towards a B Comm Accounting degree at various universities. Gugu Makhanya, project director of Transformation and Growth at Saica, says Mathematics is a gateway to many professions. “The camps consist of five- to
seven-day workshops. “Facilitators are invited to help motivate the learners and develop key skills identified as underdeveloped in African learners.” The Free State camp is held during the school holidays at the Harmony High School in Harmony, Virgi-nia.

Tshepong Clinic hosts health day AN extensive health day was recently held at the Tshepong Clinic in Thabong, concentrating mainly on counselling and testing for different conditions. Apart from the clinic staff, partners involved were HIV counselling and testing (HCT) teams, the Aurum Institute, the Anova Health Institute and the Free State Rainbow Seeds Movement. The Aurum Institute concentrates on spot screening and testing for TB. The Anova Health Institute is driving the Health4Men project, providing capacity building to health facilities with regards to same-sex and transgender health-care issues. The Free State Rainbow Seeds Movement promotes the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community. Their motto is Rooted in who we are.

Nel (33), een van die grootste senters in die land, het op Saterdag 20 Junie in Welkom sy 100ste wedstryd vir die Griffons gespeel. Hy is die 16de Griffon-speler wat hom by die 100-klub aansluit. “Dit was vir my ’n belangrike mylpaal,” sê Nel. “Rugby is die middelpunt van my lewe. Ek geniet elke oomblik daarvan.” Dié binnesenter, wat die skaal op 118 kg trek, kan enige tyd as stut of flank ingespan word. In sy skooldae het hy vir die GoudveldHoërskool se tweede span uitgedraf. Hy was ’n goeie veldatleet en het in spiesgooi uitgeblink. “Ek het later vir die Rovers-rugbyklub gespeel voordat die Griffons my gekontrakteer het.” Van 2005 tot 2010 het hy vir die Luiperds uitgedraf. Toe het Welkom en die Griffons hom teruggeroep en is hy terug na die Goudveld. Nel en sy vrou, Christine, is al sowat twee jaar getroud en het ’n agt maande oue dogtertjie, Kirsten. Hy is ’n kontrakbestuurder in diens van ’n myn naby Welkom. “Soms gaan dit maar moeilik. Ek werk elke dag van 05:00 tot 14:00. “Daarna is dit tyd vir die rugby-oefening en moet ek my haas om my dogter te gaan haal en aan haar aandag te gee.” Nel moes in 2014 reeds sy 100ste wedstryd vir die Griffons gespeel het, maar ’n knie- en handbesering het hom gepootjie. Spanne meet kragte TWEE Golden Oldies-rugbyspanne kom Saterdag (11/07) in die voorwedstryd van die stryd tussen die Griffons en Luiperds teen mekaar te staan. Dit is die eerste keer dat die Fury Golden Eagles en ’n Polisie-XV-tal in die Pelatona-stadion mekaar die stryd aansê. Die wedstryd begin om 13:15. Die ouderdomme van die Golden Oldie-spelers wissel tussen 32 en 45 jaar. Die reëls verskil om die spel vir die toeskouers aantreklik te maak. Daar sal onder meer geen wenner wees nie en daar word nie pale toe geskop nie. Volgens dr. Charles Cockeram, organiseerder van die wedstryd, gaan dit vir die spelers oor die liefde van die spel. ’n Speler wat hom aan vuilspel skuldig maak, word summier geskors. Toegang is gratis en ’n beroep word op Goudvelders gedoen om die Golden Oldies en die Griffons te gaan ondersteun.
