Discovery a bombshell Police diving unit make startling find of lethal weaponry in Sand River Marti Will mwill@volksblad.com
A large cache of lethal and illegal weaponry and explosives was discovered by the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) diving unit from Welkom and Bloemfontein in the Sand River at Tikwe, Virginia, last week. The police divers found 96 rounds of ammunition for 9 mm and R1 weapons, ATM money bags used during cash in transit heists, 44 units of commercial explosives, a mortar bomb and 198 rounds of ammunition for rifles such as R5 and similar calibres. Operation Clean Sweep started on Tuesday, 19 September, took a break for the weekend on Friday, 22 September, and continued on Tuesday, 26 September. They discovered the variety of rounds of ammunition and explosives under the water near the bridge, at a depth of about 5 m, where there is no visibility in this portion of the river. According to Capt. Conrad Fouché, who led a team of divers, these explosives are used in illegal activities such as ATM bombings. “The weaponry is lethal enough to damage the pylons of a bridge,” says Fouché. “These items were found using a regular fishing and boating method. We suspect the weapons may have been disposed of into the river by people who know that they were in possession of illegal weapons and items.” The police are investigating the matter and no arrests have been made.
