Invaders keep on returning Marti Will mwill@volksblad.com

The continued presence of a group of illegal landgrabbers in Ward 5, Virginia, (part of the Virginia industrial area), has enraged legal residents. The landgrabbers started staking their claims on 6 May, and their numbers grow by the day, say residents in the area. On 6 May, at the onset of the landgrab, five people were arrested by the Virginia Police for trespassing. They appeared in court on 8 May. The arrests follow a charge which was made by the Matjhabeng Municipality.

This charge is still valid, but has not stopped a swarm of invaders from occupying the land. According to the acting station commander of the Virginia SAPS, Lt Col Mojalefa Edwin Hlalele, five suspects were arrested after the municipality’s security guard opened a case at the Virginia SAPS. “The suspects appeared in court on 8 May and the case was postponed to 29 May,” says Sgt Mamello Mokhuoane of the Thabong Police Cluster. The five suspects are Lerato Matona (24), Ruben Tlake (38), Molefi Mulutsi (36), Ntoagae Chabeli (32)

and Anthony Khepeng (42). Hansie du Plessis, ward committee member for Ward 9, says Steyn Badenhorst (ward councillor) confirmed that a charge was laid by the municipality. “I spoke to the station commander. He says he does not know what to do, as the people keep returning despite police action and arrests. I have asked him if there are any plans to remove these people and he said that there is currently nothing in progress,” says Du Plessis. A police spokesperson has confirmed that the invasion is being monitored where possible.
