Municipality ‘terminal’ Urgent intervention needed; vote of no confidence to be lodged Marti Will mwill@volksblad.com
Opposition parties are unanimous in their their decision to lodge a vote of no confidence against the executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Nkosinjani Speelman, this week. Vista understands a caucus meeting of all opposition parties to discuss the matter will be held before the end of business on Friday (01/06). “The current ills being experienced by the Matjhabeng Municipality should be seen for what is, namely the desperate gasps of a terminally ill municipality. The frustration of standing by and seeing the municipality falling apart is indescribable,” said André Styger of the DA. “This even more so when the solutions are so apparent. “Despite numerous submissions, advice and requests by residents, business leaders and opposition parties alike, these solutions however are still not being implemented. “The only reason for such reluctance is the lack of decisive leadership and an unwillingness to take the unpopular decisions that are required,” Styger said. Vista approached Styger for comment in the midst of the perceived total collapse of local government by residents in Matjhabeng. Vista asked the municipal manager, Thabiso Tsoaeli, for comment. He had not answered at the time of going to press. Styger said lucrative contracts and tenders for the connected, and the prevailing culture of not paying for services ,has now come full

circle. “It cannot be justified that certain creditors receive preferential treatment over others and councillors themselves owe the municipality more than half a million for unpaid services. “It is sickening to listen to unrealistic populistic promises and racially divisive speeches for the sake of political survival in an effort by the very same speakers to deviate
residents’ attention from the fact that it is indeed themselves who have the power and responsibility to fix the ailing municipality, but they have failed to do so. “The time left to save our city is running out fast. We must be reminded that the leaders of Matjhabeng have one thing in common: they are all elected,” says Styger. Susan Taljaard of the Freedom Front Plus says chaos

This reached breaking point on Monday (28/05) when remaining employees were evacuated and the building closed. An outside contractor was brought in to clean the faeces, as no municipal worker was prepared to do so,

an employee told Vista. “Matjhabeng is experiencing an extreme money crisis, and cannot afford to pay its salary bill in full. “The provincial government must urgently intervene in Matjhabeng’s monetary crisis. “The Freedom Front Plus demands that the municipal manager is fired and that National Treasury urgently intervenes to save Matjhabeng,” says Taljaard.
