Welkom in chokehold Police encourage vigilance after spate of crime and violent incidents
In just over two months, an intensive wave of terror and crime has gripped Welkom. Four armed business robberies, three carjackings involving businesses, two home invasions, three murders, violence and gangsterism have plagued the city since May. The Welkom police have issued a warning to business people to beef up their security during opening and closing times. In an incident in the early hours of 25 May, the Sasol Garage in Jan Hofmeyr Road, Doorn, was robbed by four men armed with guns. They took cash and cigarettes. In this period two mashie clubs have been targeted by armed men in three separate incidents. During the last incident, on 6 June, a 19-year-old employee was robbed by armed men at closing time. During a home invasion by armed men on 5 June in Reitz Park, a Welkom couple and their son were robbed by two knife-wielding assailants. The man and his son were stabbed. The two perpetrators took a television set, shogun knives, cards and a gold watch. They fled the scene on foot. The victims were treated in hospital. On 14 June a Chinese businessman and his employees were forced into the freezer room at his business at Manny’s, Welkom. Seven armed men took an undisclosed amount of cash and cell phones. No-one was injured. Vista has confirmed two carjackings of business vehicles in the past week. On Thursday (05/07) a Welkom business woman was carjacked on her way home. The police cannot confirm this incident. Her son telephoned Vista. He says it was reported to the police. “The criminals probably thought my mother had the day’s takings in the car. The vehicle has since been recovered by the police,” says her son.
In another incident on the same day a vehicle from a business in Dagbreek delivered beer to Reitz Park. Const. Peter Kareli of South African Police Communication in Bloemfontein says the beer was ordered and delivered preceding the carjacking. While they were offloading, four armed men approached. The suspects fled the scene with the delivery vehicle, which was later recovered in Paballong Village. The beer has not been recovered. An incident on 23 June involved a fake case of carjacking. Members of the Welkom K9 Unit and Thabong Crime Intelligence arrested three men for conspiracy to commit crime after a truck was found with groceries valued at R800 000 at the wrong address. In two separate home invasions in 2010 Village on 3 July two women, a mother and daughter, were murdered. During the first incident a 58-year-old woman and her 85-year-old husband were asleep at home when four armed men with Lesotho accents forced entry. They demanded cash. One of the men struck the woman with a hammer, killing her. In the second incident a 40-year-old woman and her two sons were asleep when two armed men forced entry into their home. They demanded money and the woman was shot once. When leaving with an undisclosed amount of money, the woman was shot a second time, killing her. One of her sons was struck with a hammer and injured. The 40-year-old is suspected to have been a moneylender (loan shark). She is the daughter of the deceased woman in the first incident. No arrest was made. The Thabong SAPS Detectives Unit Commander, Col. Mzamo Nyamani, requests community members to assist in tracing these dangerous criminals. On 3 July members of the Welkom Public Order Police Intervention Team arrested eight men suspected to be members of the Stout Kinders gang (STK) for the murder of Themba Nqabashe (23).

A former resident of Welkom, who visited the city last week, shot several video clips of the city on Saturday (07/07). Jonathan Darker, who lives in KwaZuluNatal, visited his grandfather in Welkom. He decided to use a drone to make a video of the city and took various aerial photos. It was the famous Hoefie, which will soon be reopened after its revamp, which inspired him to make these videos. Darker’s video clips are on the Vista Facebook page, and over 25 000 people have already watched them.
