Welkom in chokehold Police encourage vigilance after spate of crime and violent incidents

In just over two months, an intensive wave of terror and crime has gripped Welkom. Four armed business robberies, three carjackings involving businesses, two home invasions, three murders, violence and gangsterism have plagued the city since May. The Welkom police have issued a warning to business people to beef up their security during opening and closing times. In an incident in the early hours of 25 May, the Sasol Garage in Jan Hofmeyr Road, Doorn, was robbed by four men armed with guns. They took cash and cigarettes. In this period two mashie clubs have been targeted by armed men in three separate incidents. During the last incident, on 6 June, a 19-year-old employee was robbed by armed men at closing time. During a home invasion by armed men on 5 June in Reitz Park, a Welkom couple and their son were robbed by two knife-wielding assailants. The man and his son were stabbed. The two perpetrators took a television set, shogun knives, cards and a gold watch. They fled the scene on foot. The victims were treated in hospital. On 14 June a Chinese businessman and his employees were forced into the freezer room at his business at Manny’s, Welkom. Seven armed men took an undisclosed amount of cash and cell phones. No-one was injured. Vista has confirmed two carjackings of business vehicles in the past week. On Thursday (05/07) a Welkom business woman was carjacked on her way home. The police cannot confirm this incident. Her son telephoned Vista. He says it was reported to the police. “The criminals probably thought my mother had the day’s takings in the car. The vehicle has since been recovered by the police,” says her son.

In another incident on the same day a vehicle from a business in Dagbreek delivered beer to Reitz Park. Const. Peter Kareli of South African Police Communication in Bloemfontein says the beer was ordered and delivered preceding the carjacking. While they were offloading, four armed men approached. The suspects fled the scene with the delivery vehicle, which was later recovered in Paballong Village. The beer has not been recovered. An incident on 23 June involved a fake case of carjacking. Members of the Welkom K9 Unit and Thabong Crime Intelligence arrested three men for conspiracy to commit crime after a truck was found with groceries valued at R800 000 at the wrong address. In two separate home invasions in 2010 Village on 3 July two women, a mother and daughter, were murdered. During the first incident a 58-year-old woman and her 85-year-old husband were asleep at home when four armed men with Lesotho accents forced entry. They demanded cash. One of the men struck the woman with a hammer, killing her. In the second incident a 40-year-old woman and her two sons were asleep when two armed men forced entry into their home. They demanded money and the woman was shot once. When leaving with an undisclosed amount of money, the woman was shot a second time, killing her. One of her sons was struck with a hammer and injured. The 40-year-old is suspected to have been a moneylender (loan shark). She is the daughter of the deceased woman in the first incident. No arrest was made. The Thabong SAPS Detectives Unit Commander, Col. Mzamo Nyamani, requests community members to assist in tracing these dangerous criminals. On 3 July members of the Welkom Public Order Police Intervention Team arrested eight men suspected to be members of the Stout Kinders gang (STK) for the murder of Themba Nqabashe (23).

A former resident of Welkom, who visited the city last week, shot several video clips of the city on Saturday (07/07). Jonathan Darker, who lives in KwaZuluNatal, visited his grandfather in Welkom. He decided to use a drone to make a video of the city and took various aerial photos. It was the famous Hoefie, which will soon be reopened after its revamp, which inspired him to make these videos. Darker’s video clips are on the Vista Facebook page, and over 25 000 people have already watched them.

The Power of One had its second monthly clean-up event in Odendaalsrus on Saturday (07/07). The volunteers participating in the clean-up grew threefold in numbers, compared to the first clean-up, held last month. A total of 31 people joined the Mandela Day Clean-Up and collected more than 110 bags

of trash. Representatives of Wessel Maree’s High School, the Brandwag Primary School’s Land Service Clubs and the Diversity Dance Studio showed up in numbers at the event. The club leaders and dance instructors hope that these events will encourage the youth to love and care for their environment. Wanda Bothma donated three large trash cans which

were permanently installed in Odendaalsrus’ Central Park. The event organiser, Igor Scheurkogel, hopes that these monthly clean-up events will inspire the residents of Matjhabeng to actively become involved in their community. The next clean-up will be on 9 August (Women’s Day), which will be combined with a 4 km fun walk. For information go to www.infoispower.co.

Hospice plans annual meeting for August The annual general meeting of the Goldfields Hospice Association will take place on 22 August at 18:00.

The meeting will be held in the Doctor’s Club at the Welkom Mediclinic in Meulen Street. Hospice is a non-profit

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) calls on donors to help bolster the country’s blood supply, especially stock of Group O. A healthy blood stock is 5 000 units of Group O blood per day. Blood donations help people battling with cancer, mothers struggling during

Silent crime still leaves scars Moeti Molelekoa, Thabong: King Solomon of Israel, son of David, is my favourite musician and poet. One of my preferred works of his is in Proverbs 9:17 where he writes, “stolen water tastes best, and the food you eat in secret tastes best of all”. A few weeks ago, the Constitutional Court lifted the time limit on reporting sexual offences. All sexual offence cases have merit and the court held that it accepted that the survivors of sexual assault faced similar personal, social and structural disincentives when reporting these offences and that the harm caused by sexual assault was similar, regardless of whether it was rape or sexual assault. Many sexually molested children are vulnerable orphans and fatherless children who

look for mentors to fill the void. Unsuspecting learners and students have been subjected to sexual assault by their mentors. Also, barefooted, hungry primary school learners have also fallen victim to those who were supposed to protect them but took advantage of their vulnerability. Top politicians, pastors and top football administrators usually claim their alleged victims have implicated them in order to exhort financial gain from them. The food you eat in secret is delicious, but the consequences are bitter. My Bible advises me to walk by faith and not by sight.

Vehicle thief’s crafty scheme uncovered A cunning vehicle thief and fraudster, Sello Phillip Khumalo (27), has been found guilty of ten charges of vehicle theft and fraud in the Virginia Regional Court, and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on Friday, 29 June. Three years have been suspended for five years. Khumalo will serve four years effectively after having terrorised residents of Welkom, Thabong and Kroonstad. Members of the Welkom Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit had launched an intensive investigation which led to his apprehension. All the cases

were centralised to the Virginia Regional Court. In most cases, the crimes have been committed in 2016 and 2017. Khumalo would approach victims with an apparent intention of buying their vehicles. Victims then received bank notifications that money had been paid into their bank accounts. Believing they had been paid, victims would hand over their vehicles. When they went to the bank to make withdrawals, they would discover no money had been deposited. The SMS notifications had been fake.

Find joy in singing

A choir competition was held at the Thabong Arts and Culture Centre at the end of May. The choirs that participated are the Itumeleng Choir, the Ratanang Choir and the Thabong Two Choir. They were giving singing lessons and sang together with the help of the gospel singer Tshepiso Mpotle. The event was a huge success and each choir member received a medal for participation. Op Saterdag 30 Junie het weldoeners van onder meer motorfietsklubs en ’n veerpyltjieklub van Winburg verskeie skenkings aan die Agapetehuis in Winburg gemaak. Die Agape-tehuis vir volwasse verstandelik gestremdes in Winburg versorg tans 41 inwoners waarvan 27 mans en 14 vroue is. Klere, vars groente, vleis,

ander kosprodukte en ’n stewige bedrag is vir die tehuis ingesamel. Die tehuis ontvang geen subsidies van die staat nie en inwoners ontvang slegs ’n ongeskiktheidspensioen. Andrew van Biljon (27), een van die Agape-inwoners en ’n oud Amari-leerling, woon ook in die tehuis. Hy maak draadkarre en windpompe van staal wat hy vir ’n ekstra inkomste verkoop.

Andrew skenk ’n gedeelte van dié inkomste aan die tehuis. Fanie en Barbara Swart, die huisouers, en agt ander personeellede, staan sedert 1 Mei 2013 aan stuur van die tehuis en is dankbaar vir almal wat hulle oor die tehuis ontferm. Great excitement prevails over this year’s annual night race of the Eskom Athletic Club Free State that will take place on 24 August. Prominent women from the Goldfields support this popular race. The women participating in the race also take this opportunity to raise awareness about CANSA’s services and to encourage people to donate blood at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in Welkom. The theme of this year’s event is “Life’s Beat”. With this in mind, Rikus Erasmus of Marissa Nel Orthotists in Welkom briefly explained the importance of basic foot care at a local sports shop. He showed the women how orthotists test feet to determine the extra need for foot care, and explained how

important extra care is, especially for athletes. “Shoes, trainers and other footwear should always fit well, and should have broad fronts and low heels to avoid pressure on the toes,” said Erasmus. “Shoes should have good laces, buckles or Velcro fastening to prevent movement and rubbing of the feet,” he said. ) The start and finishing line of the night race will be at Mediclinic Welkom’s main gate. Whether you race, jog or walk, this is the race to enter.
