Drugs on bus seized Police in Welkom arrest two suspects after tip-off The arresting officer, WO Evard Wasmuth, charged the men with dealing in drugs. “The suspects claimed that they met a Nigerian man at Park Station in Johannesburg who requested them to transport the boxes to Port Elizabeth. The investigation continues,” says Const. Kethabile Mofokeng, spokesperson for the Welkom Police Cluster. The two men appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on 11 July. The National Prosecuting Authority provisionally struck the case from the role, pending the forensic results of the drug seized, says Mofokeng. The case will resume when the results are made known, she says.

) Khat (Catha edulis) is believed to have originated in Ethiopia and has been grown for use as a stimulant for centuries. It can easily be mistaken for a herb picked from a garden. Khat is also known as mirra, green grass or bushmen’s tea. The leaf is mostly chewed. Fresh khat leaves contain cathinone, a schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act. The leaves typically begin to deteriorate after 48 hours, causing the chemical composition of the plant to break down. Once this occurs, the leaves contain cathine, a schedule IV drug.
