Die Bronville-kruising op die R73 het Saterdag (28/07) nóg lewens geëis toe drie mense, in ’n botsing tussen ’n vragmotor en ’n taxi, dood is. Dié kruising op die Virginia-Welkom-pad word deur padgebruikers gevrees weens die gru-ongelukke wat hier plaasvind. Saterdag omstreeks 17:30

is drie mense dood toe die taxi waarin hulle gery het teen ’n vragmotor gebots het. Die ouers van drie jong kinders, asook die taxibestuurder, is op die toneel dood verklaar. Hulle is Vuyo Gwado (36), Malerato Gwado (33) en die taxibestuurder (wie se identiteit nog nie bekend is nie), sê Mamello Mokhuane, polisiewoordvoerder. Concerns raised

The Matjhabeng municipal payment system has been offline for more than two months. DA councillor Maxie Badenhorst has approached the Free State MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Oupa Khoabane, to urgently intervene in this matter. “Residents in the greater Matjhabeng, which includes Ventersburg, Hennenman, Virginia, Odendaalsrus and Allanridge, have not received monthly accounts, nor has the municipality been able to receive account payments at their offices in these towns,” says Badenhorst. She says Thabo Panyani, the municipality’s chief financial officer (CFO), has said that the offices’ connections were disconnected by Telkom due to non-payment. “In Ventersburg, residents are requested to make their payments at Pep Stores and receive a written receipt for their payment,” says Badenhorst. “Officials must then travel to Welkom to connect their computers to the data lines in the offices there to

The DA calls on the MEC to urgently intervene and ensure that the municipality settles its account with Telkom and that their online systems are reconnected,” says Badenhorst.

Wurggreep al hoe stywer Johan de Lange, Naudeville: In ’n onlangse uitgawe van Vista word die vraag gevra of Welkom in ’n wurggreep is. Die eenvoudige antwoord is: Ja, honderdmaal ja, ons is vir seker in een. Ons is in die wurggreep van traak-my-nie-agtige politici wat geen flenter omgee vir dit wat hulle moet doen vir hul salarisse nie. Asof dit nie erg genoeg is nie, vier misdaad hoogty. Amptenare van die niemandsraad gee geen jota of titteltjie om as daar ernstige waterlekkasies by hulle aangemeld word nie. Hoe die lekkasies herstel moet word, en wanneer dit gedoen moet word, maak geen verskil aan hulle nie. Ek het drie weke gelede ’n waterlekkasie voor Dave Fredericksstraat 9 aangemeld, wat toe alreeds aangemeld was. Die persoon met wie ek gepraat het, het eenvoudig geweier om aan my ’n verwysingsnommer te gee. Die lekkasie is nog steeds besig om die stormwaterslote met miljoene liter skoon drinkwater skoon te spoel. Is dit nog die moeite werd om waterlekkasies aan te meld as jy met sulke moedswillige amptenare te doen kry? Misdadigheid vier hoogty in Welkom. Dan is daar politici wat beweer dat hulle alles net eenvoudig na hartelus gaan vat. Mnr. Speelman, ek dink dat u weer moet besin daaroor. Dit is nie net vir vat nie. Konsentreer liewer op werkskepping en nie op werkvernietiging nie. U en die niemandsraad het na die beste van my wete nog niks gedoen om Welkom op die landkaart te plaas nie. Die leë geboue in die industriële gebied en die slaggate wat die strate soos ’n slagveld laat lyk, is getuie hiervan. Veral Riana-, Derrick- en Dave Frederick-straat is ’n klinkende bewys hiervan. Dan praat ons nie eens van die rou riool in Bronville, en in Thabong ook, wat al so erg is dat dit elektriese kortsluitings veroorsaak nie. Die niemandsraad se begroting het vinniger gesink as ’n duikboot met ’n sifdeur. Jy kan eenvoudig nie, byvoorbeeld, ’n produk vir R40 koop as dit R80 kos nie. Van die niemandsraad se sogenaamde “Operasie Patala” het niks gekom nie. Eendag, miskien net eendag, sal die niemandsraad agterkom: om die begroting te laat klop, moet jy geld inkry. Nie net omtrent die helfte daarvan nie, maar al die geld. Alles in ag genome, met hierdie niemandsraad is ons dus vir seker in die grootste wurggreep waarin ons nog in die geskiedenis van Welkom was.

Met kiesers moet ’n mens nie speletjies maak nie, hulle bespeel by die volgende verkiesing ’n ander noot, En die munisipale bestuur se verbasing is groot, hulle poste het verdwyn, ’n aner party speel nou die spel. Dis ’n rowwe speletjie hierdie ou “pel”, dis die kieser se stem wat uiteindelik tel.

Aanklagte teruggetrek Alle aanklagte van korrupsie, bedrog en geldwassery teen twee Vrystaatse LUR’e en nog sewe beskuldigdes in ’n verhoor waarby sowat R20 miljoen betrokke is, is teruggetrek nadat die staat die klagstaat teen hulle wou aanpas. Skerp kritiek is Maandag (30/07) in die hooggeregshof in Bloemfontein oor die staat se ondersoekwerk uitgespreek nadat die verhoor die afgelope vyf jaar 15 keer uitgestel is. Verder blyk dit dat die staat die “dooie” maatskappy Quipsell, handeldrywend as Gestetner in Welkom, wat reeds in 2012 finaal gelikwideer en gederegistreer is, as ’n beskuldigde in die saak aangekla het. Adv. Mvuseni Ponye het namens die staat gesê hy het twee weke gelede eers daarvan te hore gekom en wil die klagstaat wysig. Adjunk-regterpresident Cagney Musi wou weet hoekom die staat nie daarvan bewus was dat die maatskappy gelikwideer en gederegistreer is nie. “Jy kan nie ’n maatskappy hof toe neem as dit nie geregistreer is nie. Net so kan jy ’n man ook nie hof toe bring as hy nie meer asemhaal nie.” Adv. Mpho Doubada het namens die staat voor regter Musi toegegee dat daar ’n onredelike vertraging aan die

staat se kant was en het gevra dat die aanklagte teruggetrek word. Dr. Benny Malakoane, LUR vir ekonomiese ontwikkeling, toerisme, omgewingsake en kleinsake; Mathabo Leeto, LUR vir sport, kuns en kultuur; dr. Limakatso Moorosi, uitvoerende hoof van Bloemwater; asook Louis de Bruyn, Leona Nel, Dolf Kotzé, Hendrik Burger en Oupa Molete, is aangekla van die beweerde misdrywe waarin groot bedrae omkoopgeld glo tussen 2007 en 2010 in die Matjhabeng-munisipaliteit van hande verwissel het. Malakoane was in dié tyd die munisipale bestuurder van Matjhabeng en Leeto die uitvoerende burgemeester. Burger en Kotzé was aan Quipsell verbonde. De Bruyn het eers waargeneem en was later die finansiële bestuurder van die munisipaliteit. Sy verloofde, Nel, was sy sekretaresse. Molete is ’n direkteur van Pole Adds in Welkom. Advv. Johann Nel SC, Willem Edeling, Christo van Schalkwyk, Lawrence Manye en Mike Hellens SC het namens die beskuldigdes opgetree. Advv. Doubada en Ponye word deur adv. Salome Maimane bygestaan. Participate in science expo A Junior Eskom Expo was held at the St Andrew's School in Welkom in June. Five schools, the Loskuil Primary School, Diepfontein Christian School, Harmony Primary School, Theunissen Primary School and St Andrew's Welkom, sent 24 learners (Gr. 1 to Gr. 3) to take part. Learners of St Andrew's have participated in the Eskom Expo for many years, and since 2017 learners of Gr. 1 to Gr. 3 have been encouraged to also take part. The two St Andrew’s teachers involved, Anina Nel and Dominique van Schalkwyk, believe it is essential for little ones to cultivate a love for science and learning. Son thrown from car during hijacking A horrible incident occurred in Virginia when two aggressive robbers hijacked a vehicle. The police are looking for the two hijacking suspects, who threw a two-year-old boy from a car while his father was held at gunpoint. On Saturday (28/07) at about 14:00 Mazhar Hassen

visited his parents to fetch his two-year-old son in Saaiplaas. He was allegedly busy buckling up his son on the back seat, which was parked outside the yard, when two unknown African males approached him. They pointed a firearm at Hassen and threw his son out of the car. They drove off with

a white Volkswagen Polo Classic, with the registration number FVD 694 FS. The Virginia police were called to the scene and a case of carjacking was opened. The boy did not sustain any injuries. Anyone with information can call Detective WO Lesole Monye on 082-084-2401.

Left to pollute area Raw sewage has been gushing from a pipe outside of 20 Unicor Road (insert) in St Helena, Welkom, for almost two weeks now. This raw sewage flows down the road in two solid streams of toilet paper and other waste, past the entrance and exit gates of the St Helena Primary School. The water flows for almost 2 km to the end of Unicor Road and beyond. This sewage problem has repeatedly been reported to the Matjhabeng Municipality. On Monday (30/07) Vista sent an email to the municipal manager, the director of infrastructure, the city engineer and other relevant parties, with no reaction received. On Tuesday morning (31/07) Vista took videos and photographs (see Vista Newspaper on Facebook). The sewage was still gushing out of the pipeline. Boek boeiend Pelindaba Protokol, die nuutste Afrikaanse roman deur die skrywer Wynand du Toit, speel af teen die agtergrond van die ou Suid-Afrika se kernwapenprogram in wisselwerking met die hedendaagse terrorismebedreiging. Die verhaal word teen ’n vinnige pas vertel en mense wat van ’n eenvoudige aksieverhaal hou, sal dié boek geniet. Natuurlik is daar ’n mooi vrou, Aleana Opperman, wat in dieselfde span as die held, Johannes Moller, is – en aan die ander kant is daar die bloeddorstige Moslem-terreurgroep wat graag sy hande op die laaste kernbom uit die apartheidsera wil lê. Die verhaal begin waar ’n groep kernwetenskaplikes uit die ou Suid-Afrika vermoor word kort nadat oudpresident FW de Klerk opdrag gee dat Suid-Afrika se kernprogram gestaak word. Net een man, dr. Joseph Opperman, word nie saam met sy kollegas vermoor nie. Opperman is Aleana se pa. Wanneer Opperman jare later vermoor word, keer Aleana terug uit Israel, en beland sy midde-in die ondersoek na haar pa se moord. Net Opperman het geweet dat daar ’n atoombom oorgebly het en dat dit iewers in SuidAfrika versteek word. Die terreurgroep wil die bom tot elke prys in die hande kry. Van hier maak die spanningsverhaal ’n draai in Australië, Turkye, Maputo en die Kalahari. Ivoorsmokkelaars, oudsoldate wat deesdae in Australië woon, Mossad en die Valke is alles deel van Pelindaba Protokol, en dit gee die verhaal ’n eietydse kleur. Danksy sy militêre agtergrond kan Du Toit met gesag oor die werkswyse van veiligheidsagentskappe en terreurgroepe skryf en die verhaal word oortuigend vertel. Vigue Soul is a rising star in the local music industry, and he is blazing a trail to take his place among the best of the best on the South African stage. Welkom born and bred Victor Kotoane (27) is fast becoming a singing sensation, and with his voice of gold, he is set to be a big name. On Sunday evening (29/07) he scooped a Golden Ticket during the Johannesburg auditions of Idols, being only the second Goldfielder to ever grab this honour. Victor is proud to represent his community and aims to make it big in Idols. Described by his peers as a R&B Soulful Sensation, Vigue Soul started singing in church choirs when he was a mere five years old. He has always aspired to be a top singer and in 2016 he led the S’Fiso Ncwane Choir to a fifth position in the Clash of the Choirs with his beautifully sung solo during the performance. The choir brought the house down with their performance that year. The choir master S’Fiso has since passed away. In 2017 Victor obtained a third position in the Matjhabeng Talent Search. This year he released a single music video “Grazy for You”, and is working on an EP of six R&B songs. “I want to release this through Audio Mack and Sound Cloud in October,” said Victor. Victor has already shared the stage with many top South African singers, including Teboho Moloi and Andiswe Mabastu of Jazz Celebration. “I am excited for my future, singing is my passion, and I live for my music,” said Victor.

Twee leerlinge van die Goudveld-Hoërskool is tydens die ECH-hokkiekliniek en -toernooi wat gedurende Julie plaasgevind het, vir ’n nasionale hokkietoerspan gekies wat na Duitsland en Nederland sal reis. Die toer sal van 30 September tot 11 Oktober plaasvind. Semonè Rademeyer (18) en Marunique Leach (17) van die Goudveld-Hoërskool is al twee in die toerspan ingesluit.

Hulle sien daarna uit om op internasionale vlak mee te ding. Semonè het vir vyf jaar agtereenvolgens provinsiale hokkie gespeel en speel vir die afgelope vier jaar ook vir Goudveld se eerste hokkiespan, waarvan sy die onderkaptein is. Marunique, is vir die afgelope twee jaar in provinsiale hokkiespanne ingesluit en is ook vir twee jaar al deel van Goudveld se eerste hokkiespan. Roads closed to accommodate athletes This year’s night race of the Eskom Athletic Club Free State will take place on Friday, 24 August. Motorists are requested to use alternative routes from Thursday, 23 August, due to the closure of roads. The following roads will be closed: ) Section 1 will be closed on Thursday, 23 August, from 18:00 to Friday, 24 August, till 23:00: Meulen Street from the corner of Petrus Bosch Street towards Lategan Street and the front of the main gate at Mediclinic. ) Section 2 will be closed from Friday, 24 August, from 11:00 to 23:00: Lategan Street both sides of the street left and right from the emergency entrance of Mediclinic towards Tempest Road. Three Goldfielders tackled this year’s gruelling Washie 100 Miler on 27 and 28 July in the Eastern Cape. With a lot of bravery and courage Donna Randall (Goldfields Multisport), Suzette Venter and Petrie Venter (Nedbank Running Club) from Welkom took on the 161 km.

All three completed the race. Donna’s time was 24 hours 28 minutes and 51 seconds and Suzette en Petrie completed the race in 25 hours 17 minutes and 10 seconds. Suzette completed her fourth Washie and her daughter Petrie her first. Donna dedicated her third Washie to her friend Charmaine Fedder who has cancer. “Marinda Ludick from the

practising long distances from January each year to prepare the body and mind.” “A good diet and keeping the body hydrated is essential to ensure that the runners have the stamina to complete the race,” says Donna. The Washie 100 is a ultramarathon that used to start at Port Alfred and ended in East London. This year, due to road works, the route was changed

and the race started at the Cathcart Country Club and ended at the Buffalo Club in East London. Donna said that this year’s route was tougher than other year’s, but she will be back to do her fourth Washie next year. This year was the 42nd Washie race that was presented by the Buffalo Road Runners and sponsors.
