the veld and told them the tent was filled with dead people and that if they screamed or cried he would kill them. Labuschagne told the court that it is not the act of penetration which causes the most trauma. “Pain goes away, the scars heal. In the minds of these children they will always be the victims of rape,” Labus-chagne told the court. Magistrate Deon van Rooyen said during sentencing that these are despicable acts which enrage communities. “We live in a sick society where parents cannot safely send their children to the shops, or even allow them to play in the streets with their friends.” Van Rooyen said it was in the community’s interest to remove Pita from society because he is a threat. Pita’s name has been entered into the register for sexual offenders.

Isaac Pita (26) was found guilty on eight charges, including rape and indecent assault, in the Welkom Regional Court on Monday (12/03). Pita was also found guilty of compelling or causing a child to witness sexual offences. His deeds were described by Charmaine Labuschagne, control prosecutor at the Court for Sexual Offences and Related Matters in Welkom, as absolutely sickening. She told the court he was one of the worst rapists she had encoun-tered. “It is concerning that the accused systematically repeated his behaviour over a long period, using the same modus operandi in each and every sexual assault.” Pita was 16 years old when he raped and sodomised his first victim. This girl was ten years old. He had abducted her from a public road by grabbing her from behind and threatening to stab her if she screamed. His second victim was nine years old. He threatened her and her 7-year-old friend (a boy) with a knife and forced them to walk with him, and not to scream, or he would kill them. He raped and sodomised the girl while the boy watched.
