Virginia spog met ’n splinternuwe laerskool. Die Laerskool Voluit is die enigste Afrikaanse laerskool in die dorp en het Woensdag (17/01) die heel eerste keer sy deure oopgemaak. Die samesmelting van die Virginia-Volkskool en die

Laerskool Merriespruit is deur albei skole se beheerliggame begin. Die hoofrede vir die samesmelting is dat albei skole min leerlinge het. Die Federasie vir Beheerliggame van Suid-Afrikaanse Skole (Fedsas) en die departement van onderwys het al die opsies oorweeg en die leerlinge se belange op die hart gedra. Die besluit is deur almal

goedgekeur en ondersteun, en so het die nuwe Laerskool Voluit ontstaan. Die naam Voluit is saamgestel uit die eerste drie letters van Volkskool en die laaste drie letters van Merriespruit. Die nuwe skool moes uiteraard ook ’n nuwe skoollied, wapen en spoggerige nuwe uniforms kry. Die Laerskool Voluit word op

die perseel van die ou VirginiaVolkskool bedryf, terwyl die ou Laerskool Merriespruit nou deur die Virginia High School benut sal word. JC Brummer, wat voorheen die skoolhoof van Merriespruit was, is nou hoof van die Laerskool Voluit. Die personeellede van albei skole is behou. Die skoolhoof, personeel en

Eight arrested for human trafficking Shocking revelations of human trafficking were made on Wednesday, 10 January, on a farm outside Odendaalsrus. Ten victims were rescued from the alleged human traffickers and seven suspects arrested. An eighth suspect, a businessman, handed himself over to the police on Tuesday (16/01). The police received a tip-off about possible human trafficking operations in the Goldfields area and trapped members of the sindicate. A joint operation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit, the Welkom police and Odendaalsrus police detectives was launched. This resulted in the arrest of six of the suspects, aged 21 to 68, for human trafficking. The police received information that a victim, who had allegedly been trafficked from Lesotho, was being kept against her will on a farm near Odendaalsrus. On arrival at the given address, five victims were found and rescued. A security guard and the manager on the farm were arrested. Preliminary investigation led the team to Khune Village in Welkom, where two female suspects, who are believed to be the recruiters, were arrested. Another two suspects, a receptionist and a security guard, were arrested at a lodge that apparently operates as a brothel in Welkom, and

four victims were rescued. The victims are four females and three males from Lesotho, and another three females from Bloemfontein. The victims are currently being kept at a place of safety. Six suspects appeared in the Odendaalsrus and Welkom Magistrate’s Courts on Friday (12/01) facing charges of human trafficking. They are: Moalosi Boyaphi (68), a South African citizen; Johan Mothebe (57), a South African citizen; Mpele Agnencia (40), a Lesotho citizen; Tgakholi Celesting, a Lesotho citizen; Abram Sekoleli (53), a South African citizen; and Dineo Mofana (27), a South African citizen. They were denied bail. The cases were postponed to Friday (19/01) and Monday (22/01) for formal bail application. A seventh suspect, Lebona Phumela (27), was arrested on Monday (15/01) after being pointed out by the victims. She appeared before the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (16/01) facing charges of human trafficking. The businessman, accompanied by his attorney, handed himself over at the Hawks’ office in Welkom on Tuesday (16/01). “The investigations continue and further arrests cannot be ruled out,” says Capt. S’fiso Nyakane, spokesperson of the Hawks.

Die seuns het verskeie babas se lewe gered toe die Shosholoza Meyl op hul plaas naby die Genéva-stasie in die distrik Hennenman ontspoor het. Afbeenvoël bring geluk Augnischa van Rooyen, Welkom: Die nuwe jaar het vir my met ’n wonderwerk en dankbaarheid begin. Vroeg in November vra my skoonseun of ek bereid is om een van sy teelpapegaaibabas te vat wat ’n gebreklike pootjie het. Natuurlik sê ek dadelik ja. As jy al die aangenome diere by my huis sien, sal jy verstaan hoekom hy met my “bird rehab centre” spot. Nash, soos ons die papegaai gedoop het, word daagliks gevoer en gehelp om te klim en sy been te oefen. Die gebreklike beentjie staan reguit agtertoe soos ’n vlerk. Rekkies om dit vorentoe te trek, was net ’n kortstondige oplossing, omdat papegaaie hul kloue gebruik om te klim en te eet. Kersfees gaan kampeer ons langs die Vaalrivier by Parys en Nash gaan saam om versorg te word. Alles werk mooi uit en ons het vir hom sy eie oulike klouterraam-stomp opgetel om sy been te oefen. In ’n onbewaakte oomblik buite sy hok een oggend vat Nash sy eerste vlug – en tot ons verdriet, is hy net skoonveld. Die hele kamp het die volle dag saam met ons gesoek. Langs die rivier en in bome, maar daar is geen teken van Nash nie. So is ons gesin maar baie bedruk en in die stilte verwyt ons mekaar en is almal kwaad vir almal. Ons Nuwejaarsdag is nie die geselligste nie. Ek vra stilletjies in gebed vir die Here hoe dit moontlik is dat my nuwe jaar weer op ’n laagtepunt kan begin nadat ons as gesin in 2017 soveel hartseer beleef het. Ek waag dit selfs om te twyfel of daar werklik iets soos goeie dinge in die lewe is. Ek is kwaad oor ons eie afbeen2017 en ek is kwaad oor hoe ons voel. Teen skemer, wat Nash se voertyd is, loop die trane nóg lekkerder en ek gryp instinktief na sy voerbakkie. Ek roep hom en hy antwoord ons. Ons hoor sy kermgeluidjies en almal gryp flitse. Ons roep en hy kerm. Hoog in ’n boom wat oor die rivier hang, sit Nash sowat 20 m in die lug. Hy kan nie afklim nie en ons kan nie

op nie. Ons moet deur die nag wag. Almal is voor die son op. Ons roep en Nash roep terug. Hy vlieg van boomtop tot boomtop en bly buite ons bereik. So vlieg hy met wye draai en kom sit in die boom agter ons karavaan. Ons trek die motor onder die boom. Pa klim op die dak en seun in die boom met sy visnet. Nash wil afklim, maar die gebreklike pootjie laat hom nie toe nie. In ’n oomblik van verwildering val hy, seun gryp en pa skep – en daar sit Nash in die skepnet. Die hele kamp is saam met ons bly en met trane in die oë word Nash verwelkom. Sy vlerke word onmiddellik geknip en hy word ook sommer vir die res van die vakansie gehok. En daar staan ek in ongeloof en ek raak stilletjies weg. Dankie Here, dankie Here. Ek word klein voor Hom in vergifnis en in my gedagtes is ’n terugblik na my eerste kleinkind wat in April 2017 gebore is. Ek onthou dat ons, ondanks ons mediese rekeninge, elke maand oorleef het. My opvolgbesoek ná die hartomleiding het gewys alles lyk goed. My operasie ná drie jaar se gesukkel met ’n oop wond was suksesvol en ons is tans met vakansie by ’n pragtige oord langs die Vaalrivier. Ek het onlangs weer begin werk. Ondanks môre se onsekerheid is ek dankbaar oor Nash wat ’n plekkie in ons huis het. Ek is dankbaar vir my wonderlike gesin. Ek het planne, ek het hoop – en bo dit alles, het ek geloof! Die Here gee ons vlerke om te sprei sodat ons dinge kan ervaar, maar knip ook soms ons vlerke om ons veilig te bewaar. Hiermee wens ek vir almal ’n geseënde 2018 vol dankbaarheid toe!

’n Gegewe broodjie voor ’n wiel gewerp Toe kom die ding van Black Friday en ek besef met ’n skok ek moet nog ’n geskenkie gaan koop. Ek besluit toe voor die Black Friday rooi word, sal ek gou rigting na die inkopiesentrum toe verander. Omdat ek nie ’n gereelde “mallloper” is nie, verstom ek my so dat ek amper voor motors beland. Ek sien ’n vrou wat uit ’n parkeerplek ry. Albei kante van haar kar is sleg ingeduik en vol krappe. Sy sukkel ’n paar minute om haarself uit die parkeerplek te bevry. Toe verstaan ek waarom: Sy begin ry – aan die verkeerde kant van die pad. Voor haar kom ’n ander kar aan en sy wys in baie rowwe vingertaal hy moet anderkant verby haar ry. Ek stap aan en van voor kom ’n jong man aan. Sopwaternat gesweet. Hy dra ’n pikswart rubberduikpakbaadjie in ’n allemintige 30°C. Ek sê: “Seun, hier is nou wel ’n Ocean Basket, maar daar is géén oseaan naby waar jy jou duikpakkie kan uittoets nie. Jy gaan uitdroog soos ’n bokkom voor die dag verby is.” Toe ek in sy oë kyk besef ek ek mors my asem. Hy kan nie omgee of hy ’n Iron-man pakkie dra nie; hy is

baie ver hiervandaan. Ek doen my inkopies en stap terug. Vir ’n jaar lank sit daar elke dag ’n hawelose man by die voetoorgang. Die ou lê soms met sy kop in die pad; al sy sinne weggesnuif deur die gom. Vandag sit hy regop met ’n plastiese koppie en bedel. Iemand gee vir hom ’n broodrolletjie. Hy kyk daarna asof dit pik, en slinger daai broodrol reg onder ’n verbygaande kar se wiel in. Dan hou hy die plastiese koppie na my uit. Die koppie het nie eens meer ’n bodem nie. Ek maak my inkopiesak oop, skeur die weense worsies oop en haal vir hom drie uit. Voor hy dit vat sê ek vir hom: ”Gooi nou net hierdie wors onder ’n wiel in, dan gaan jy saam, verstaan jy? Jy eet vir hulle nou!” Al drie worsies word ingeryg en ek stap aan, tree oor die vreeslike plat broodrol en dink by myself: “Hy kon nou ’n hot dog geëet het!”

Suspects on the loose The Welkom police are looking for three suspects after a robbery incident in Dagbreek, Welkom. Last year on Monday, 14 August, at about 10:00, the 32-year-old complainant and her family were at home when three African males with firearms forcefully entered their home. The suspects tied the complainant up with electrical cord and robbed her of three cellphones and an Acer laptop. Identikits of the three suspects were compiled. The first suspect is dark in complexion, slender, 1,65 m in height, with

shaven hair. The second suspect is light in complexion, slender, 1,8 m in height, also with shaven hair. The third suspect is dark in complexion, slender, 1,9 m in height and had a brush cut. All three suspects were speaking Sotho and can be aged 25 to 30 years. No one has been arrested yet. The police are appealing to anyone with information regarding the incident to call Det.WO Slang van Zyl of the Welkom Trio Task Team on 057-3916245 or on 073-299-6332.

The Welkom police are still looking for two armed robbery suspects who are on the loose. On Friday, 2 December, at about 22:00, Katleho Lehodi (29) was on his way home walking in Bok Street, Welkom, when he was approached by two African men. They demanded his cellphone and cash. He refused to give the cellphone and cash and one suspect stabbed him several times with a knife. Lehodi was left there

bleeding. The police were contacted and Lehodi was taken to a hospital for medical treatment. A case of robbery was opened for further investigation. An identikit was also compiled of one of the suspects. Members of the provincial anti-corruption unit arrested three police officials on charges of theft and corruption. It is alleged that the three officials visited a house in Welkom on Thursday, 11 January, and asked the owner permission to search the house. The three men also demanded the keys to the safe. They reportedly took 13 pieces of unprocessed gold

out of the safe. Furthermore, it is alleged that these police members forced the complainant to transfer an amount of R300 000 into one of their bank accounts. Two of these members, a constable and a sergeant, work at the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Welkom. The third, also a constable, works at the Hertzogville Police Station. The suspects were expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (17/01).

Dink vooruit: Beplan ’n week vooruit wat jy in die kosblik gaan pak. Dink hoeveel maaltye die kos in die kosblik moet vervang en pak daarvolgens in. Gebruik oorskietetes vir die kosblik. As jy vir ’n ete frikkadelle voorberei, maak ’n paar ekstras vir die kosblik. Speel ’n bietjie: ’n Kosblik moet kleurryk wees. Maak broodjies prettig deur dit byvoorbeeld met ’n koekiedrukker te omskep. Sny ’n appel (sprinkel ’n bietjie suurlemoensap daaroor) sodat jou haasbekkie dit makliker kan eet. Huiswerkers kry 5% verhoging Hanlie Stadler

Huiswerkers wat die minimum loon verdien, moes van begin Januarie af nagenoeg 5% meer verdien het. Die nasionale departement van arbeid het in November erken hy het gesloer met die bekendmaking van dié verhogings, wat gewoonlik begin November aangekondig word sodat werkgewers genoeg tyd het om lone aan te pas voor 1 Desember, wanneer dit gewoonlik van krag word. Dit is wel later in Desember in die Staatskoerant aangekondig. Die minimum loon vir huiswerkers is die minste wat huishulpe, tuiniers of kinderoppassers mag verdien. Die regulasies onderskei tussen stedelike gebiede en plattelandse gebiede en ook tussen mense wat minder of meer as 27 uur per week werk. Meer as 27 uur per week In stedelike gebiede en groot dorpe waar mense meer as 27 uur per week werk, is die minimum loon per uur nou R13,05 of R2 544,55 per maand vir iemand wat 45 uur per week werk. Vir nie-stedelike gebiede is dit tans R11,89 per uur of R2 318,37 per maand vir 45 uur per week. Tot 27 uur per week Vir dié wat 27 uur of minder per

week werk, is die minimum loon in stedelike gebiede R15,28 per uur of R1 787,62 per maand vir iemand wat 27 uur per week werk. In nie-stedelike gebiede is dit R14,03 per uur of R1 641,38 vir iemand wat 27 uur per maand werk. Die verhogings, wat aan inflasie gekoppel word, wissel van 5,01% tot 5,12%. Volgens die departement gebruik hy verbruikersprysinflasie uitgesluit eienaars-ekwivalente huur plus een persentasiepunt om die verhoging te bereken. Onthou van minimum loon Werkgewers moet egter daarop let dat die plan steeds is dat die nasionale minimum loon op 1 Mei 2018 in werking tree. Baie huiswerkers sal dus nog ’n verhoging moet kry wanneer dit ingestel word. Die nasionale minimum loon gaan R20 per uur beloop, maar huiswerkers sal vir eers ’n minimum van R15 per uur (75% van die nasionale minimum loon) moet ontvang. Die loon van huiswerkers in stedelike gebied wat tot 27 uur per week werk, is reeds net-net meer as R15, maar dit sal nie verminder mag word in Mei nie. Huiswerkers se lone sal só verhoog word dat huiswerkers oor twee jaar die nasionale minimum loon verdien.
