O tempo não é linear. Uma tábua reta com rodas de madeira, objeto primitivo anterior, quem fez isso usava como um skate? Sim, eu fiz isso, meu primeiro skate, (meu pai era marceneiro) e eu usava para aprender a me equilibrar num piso de cimento que ficou todo esburacado. A ilusão do tempo é a característica da terceira dimensão que nos mantém limitados, neste lugar onde nascemos acreditando que tudo tem princípio, meio e fim. E o que são estas fotos velhas grampeadas ou fixadas com fitas em estranhos materiais reaproveitados? Poderiam ser fragmentos de uma história coletiva conectando skatistas de lugares diferentes, formando uma outra história mais pessoal, não menos estranha.

Mas, quase 20 anos depois (como quase tudo que está fazendo 20 anos em 2017 ou 2018), muitos ainda lembram que havia uma espécie de exposição em alguma parte daquela festa, com fotos em preto e branco, onde quem olhava podia se ver registrado naquelas colagens como parte de uma cena de skate que existia mas não estava nas páginas das revistas tradicionais.

Diz a lenda que entre 1998 e 2000, houve uma festa de skate no clube Aliança, em Esteio. Em algum momento, todos na festa estavam tão fora de controle quanto a própria festa e ninguém sabe ao certo o que pode ter acontecido naquela noite.

Não há como saber se este material sobreviveria a passagem de um tempo que não é linear, ou o que representaria encontrar agora estas antigas colagens de divertidos momentos que percorreram as dimensões para surgir através de outras páginas impressas. Fotos ruins, registros afetivos, uma estética ultrapassada. Assemblagens do que já foi, e permanece. Eu nasci em Esteio e foi lá que comecei a andar de skate e fiz algumas das minhas amizades mais antigas. Na magia desta ilusão dentro ilusão, nunca será necessário saber o que significa caminhar por uma estrada de terra, sorrindo, levando na cabeça uma caixa de madeira com um eixo com rodas de skate. Preso na dimensão do tempo, apenas continuo contando histórias que nem sempre fazem sentido.

Time is not linear. A straight board with wooden wheels, an early primitive object, who used this like a skateboard? Yes, I did this, my first skateboard, (my father was a carpenter) and I used to learn how to balance myself on a cement floor covered in potholes. The illusion of time is the characteristic of the third dimension that keeps us limited, in this place where we are born believing everything has a beginning, a middle and an end. And what are these old photos stapled or taped into extraneous reused materials? They could be fragments of a collective story connecting skaters from different places forming another more personal, but no less strange. Photographs, magazines or printed pages emerge as these two-dimensional spaces that isolate the action of time, illusion within the illusion, prolonging the permanence of specific moments. Photos from the nineties, my first experiments with photography, revelations of films and paper copies, registering friends skateboarding in various places, the first skate trips between Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo.

A guy appears smiling, sitting next to several girls. This guy, Marcelo Rempel, Bixiga, studied with me in Esteio, played and sang in a punk band, and it was he who showed me a skateboard for the first time and also introduced me to several imported skateboard magazines. Looking at those magazines, those skateboard photos and riding on this guy’s skateboard, a new dimension opened up and never closed again, a life of skateboarding and photography.

one knows for sure what might have happened that night. But almost 20 years later (like almost everything that is 20 years old in 2017 or 2018), many still remember that there was a kind of exhibition somewhere in that party, with black and white photos, where anyone who looked could be seen in those collages as part of a skate scene that existed but was not on the pages of traditional magazines.

There is no way of knowing if this material would survive the passing of a time that is not linear, or what would represent now in finding these old collages of fun moments that have traveled the dimensions to appear through other printed pages. Bad pictures, affective records, an outdated aesthetic. Assemblies of what has already been, and remains. I was born in Esteio and it was there that I started to skate and made some of my oldest friendships. In the magic of this illusion, in illusion, it will never be necessary to know what it means to walk on a dirt road, smiling, carrying on his head a wooden box with an axle and skate wheels. Stuck in the dimension of time, I just keep telling stories that do not always make sense.

Essa cultura de viajar sozinho pelo mundo faz parte dos europeus e dos nórdicos, muito mais do que imaginamos, a muito tempo. O skate proporciona isso também, essa vivência real de culturas que você talvez nunca conhecesse de verdade se fosse um turista convencional, por exemplo. Com tantas imagens incríveis pra mostrar e com seu olhar delicado, convenci ela a selecionar um material pra compartilhar com as pessoas que veem a Vista. O mundo é bem pequeno para quem não se põem limites e tem a liberdade de olhar as culturas diferentes com respeito e delicadeza, coisa que a nossa grande amiga Sonia tem de sobra.

To me, the most incredible thing was learning that she wasn’t even 20 years old yet, but easily had more life experience than many 40 year old dudes. This experience of traveling the world alone has been part of the European and Northern European culture since pretty much forever, much more than we imagine. Skateboarding also provides that real experience of cultures that you might never really know if you were a conventional tourist, for example. With so many incredible images to show and with her detailed eye, I convinced her to select some of her photos to share with all of us here at Vista. The world is very small for those who do not set limits and have the freedom to look at different cultures with respect and delicacy, something our great friend Sonia has to spare. Encontrei a fotógrafa Dinamarquesa Sonia Ziegler em São Paulo/SP numa sessão com vários skatistas e começamos a conversar bastante sobre a minha experiência incrível na Dinamarca e a, até então, experiência incrível dela no Brasil. Nos encontramos várias outras vezes e ela acabou ficando uns dias comigo e minha esposa em casa e pude conhecer mais sobre ela e seu trabalho. Viajando por toda a América do Sul, literalmente, ela fez o que muitos skatistas e fotógrafos sonham em fazer,

We met several other times and she ended up spending a few days with me and my wife at our home and I got to know more about her and her amazing work. NOME: MAIKON “BK” QUARESMA IDADE: 26 ANOS DE: MANAUS/AMAZONAS Ele é mais um entre milhões de brasileiros da região Norte que carregam histórias de dificuldades e batalham diariamente para mudar essa realidade. Nascido em Manaus, a capital da Amazônia, aprendeu desde cedo que só se vence com muito trabalho, e isso ele faz diariamente com seu skate, sempre esbanjando um largo sorriso em todas as situações. Foi assim que Maikon Quaresma, também chamado de BK, nos presenteou

Norte e também chamou a atenção de skatistas do Brasil a fora. Qual o sentimento de ver esse trabalho realizado? BK: O sentimento é de querer fazer mais ainda, pra que apareça a região Norte carente de mídia e carente de vídeos. Eu quero levar cada vez mais o nosso trabalho para que o Brasil nos conheça. O skate em Manaus está forte e várias outras cidades da região Norte estão indo no mesmo caminho, então, sinto que minha missão é representar e divulgar isso. E como foi produzir o Amazônida? BK: Teve muita diversão com os colegas e ao mesmo tempo muitos e muitos momentos de superação pra vencer os picos que sempre são complicados e difíceis, mas se não fosse assim não fazia o vídeo. Pra quem não conhece Manaus tem um outro ponto negativo que é o intenso calor que em determinadas horas impede você de andar de skate e o nosso inverno é de chuvas todos os dias.

Mas por outro lado foi só alegria por poder viajar por essa Amazônia, fazer amizades e divulgar as marcas que me ajudam. Agora vendo o resultado é só alegria! No vídeo aparece muitos picos bons. Isso tudo é em Manaus? BK: Tem muitos de Manaus, mas tem muitos de cidades do interior do Amazonas como Coari que é uma cidade muito boa pra se andar no estado do Pará. São picos bonitos, mas a maioria com imperfeições, daí tem que se puxar pra voltar as manobras. Aqui o skate tem essa característica de andar nos picos difíceis.

Então esse mercado vai dar oportunidade de skatistas manauaras se profissionalizarem? BK: É um começo. Nunca houve uma marca manauara que profissionalizasse um skatista e estamos trabalhando pra mostrar que podemos chegar lá. Eu estou entusiasmado, porque desde o início do meu projeto com a Ulyck 86 nosso foco é esse, então estamos trabalhando direito pra que a gente possa conquistar isso também. Por enquanto estamos trabalhando duro pra marca crescer cada vez mais pra que eu me profissionalize, e como já disse, mostre a força do skate do Norte. Manaus nunca teve um manauara que a representasse no skate profissional com uma grande evidência resultante de um skate baseado no regionalismo e no orgulho de ser da região. Você acha que você vai ser esse cara? BK: Estou trabalhando duro pra isso. Na história do skate amazonense tivemos vários que andavam muito e que também tentaram, chegando a morar no sudeste, e não conseguiram se profissionalizar. Eu sou de uma geração que busca se profissionalizar pra representar o Amazonas mas também com patrocinadores da minha terra. Esse vai ser o diferencial.

BK: Hoje eu vejo mais forte até mesmo por conta do vídeo e também de marcas locais que estão surgindo e criando uma consciência de independência. Em Manaus está bonito de ver a molecada cada vez mais usando material de marcas locais, pensando em produzir e até mesmo em se profissionalizarem.

Mas você sempre está por São Paulo, inclusive no Amazônida tem umas imagens de lá. Apesar da cena independente é importante estar por dentro do que acontece nos grandes centros do skate? BK: Eu já morei um tempo em São Paulo e foi muito bom pro meu crescimento, tanto por entender o game, quanto pelas grandes amizades que fiz. Como de vez enquando vou a São Paulo aproveitei pra filmar em picos que são considerados clássicos do skate mundial. Quem não quer ter uma no escorregador do Ipiranga? (risos). Mostrar um pouco do skate do Norte em sampa também né?!

Como está a cena do skate em Manaus?

nha? BK: Porque não seguir? (risos) Porque não mostrar? Somos do Amazonas e em mim os traços indígenas são evidentes. Quando fizemos esse vídeo nos desafiamos em fazer uma vídeo parte grande (8 minutos) mesmo quando neguinho dizia que esse não era o padrão comercial que o skate exige. Nos desafiamos em colocar músicas de artistas regionais que talvez muitas pessoas que assistiram o vídeo nunca teriam a chance de conhecer. Skate é cultura e essa é a nossa cultura! A gente só fez lgo que já está feito. Amazonas é isso aí. E como é a sua correria do skate em Manaus? BK: É de construção. Como a distância deixa a gente longe das mídias minha correria é pra divulgar a região norte e logicamente meu trabalho. Quero fazer isso não só em Manaus, por isso esse ano já estive no Pará e acabei de voltar de Boa Vista, em Roraima, e quero poder visitar mais estados da nossa região sempre construindo meu trabalho e uma identidade própria baseada no nosso skate. Agora que tenho um bom suporte isso é possível. Andar de skate em Manaus pra mim é vida, é onde estão meus amigos é onde está meu coração. Você é um cara conhecido pela sua energia e persistência que te faz ficar horas tentando uma manobra difícil ignorando ao extremo os limites do teu corpo. Dá onde vem essa força? BK: Vem do skate mesmo. Aqui é tudo difícil então tem que ter uma garra a mais pra valorizar a manobra. Não posso deixar passar oportunidades que por aqui já não são muitas. Aproveito pra agradecer a galera que me filma que entra na vibe da manobra comigo torrando no sol (risos) e as vezes até mesmo debaixo de chuva. O que esperar de Maikon Quaresma ainda em 2017? BK: Muito skate e muito trabalho na busca de se profissionalizar, viajar o má-

ximo que puder, fazer novos projetos com meus patrocinadores e levantar a bandeira do Norte sempre! Muitos falam que você é o maior representante do skate manauara por ser guerreiro, enfrentar dificuldades, ser defensor de suas origens e ter um imenso orgulho do skate do Norte. É isso mesmo? BK: Os skatistas de Manaus são verdadeiros guerreiros, e isso está mudando nossa cena. E a ideia é essa mesmo, romper barreiras e dificuldades e fazer nossa história. Esse é o skate caboclo, esse sou eu. Eu sou skate, eu vivo skate, eu respiro skate! Eu sou Amazônida! (risos) AGRADECIMENTOS BK: Obrigado a todos que me fortaleceram Brasil a fora. What is the feeling of seeing this work accomplished? BK: The feeling is of wanting to do even more, so the appearance that the Northern region is lacking in media goes way. I want to show more and more of our work so that Brazil knows us. Skateboarding in Manaus is strong and becoming more strong in several other cities in the North, so I feel that it is my mission is to represent and spread this. And how was it to produce Amazônida? BK: We had a lot of fun with friends and at the same time there were many many moments spent trying to overcome the spots that are always complicated and difficult, but if it wasn’t like this we wouldn’t make the video.

He is one of millions of Brazilians in the North who carry stories of the difficulties and daily struggle to change his reality. Born in Manaus, capital of Amazonia, he learned from an early age that you only win with a lot of work, and this is what he does daily with his skateboard, always with a big smile in every situation. That’s how Maikon Quaresma, also called BK, presented us with his video part called Amazônida, a production that escapes conventional standards and brings all the natural beauty of the

For those who don’t know Manaus, there is another negative point, the intense heat that at certain times prevents you from skating and our winter is raining every day. But on the other hand I was happy to be able to travel through the Amazon, make friendships and publicize the brands that help me. Now seeing the result is just joy! There are so many good spots in the video. Is this all in Manaus? BK: There are many from Manaus, but there are many cities in the countryside of the Amazon, such as Coari, which is a very good city to skate. Also in the city of Santarém in the state of Pará. It has beautiful spots, but most with imperfections, so you have to really want the trick. Here we have this culture to skate on very difficult spots.

There is Ulyck 86 who believed in my potential and helped me, along with Fake skateboards and the Odisséia, a new Amazonian skateboard project that starts in May. So this market will give skateboarders the opportunity to become professional? BK:It’s a start. There has never been a Manauara brand that professionalized a skater and we are working to show that we can get there. I’m excited because since the beginning of my project with Ulyck 86 our focus is this, so we’re working hard so that we can conquer this too. For now we are working hard for the brand to grow more and more so that I become professional, and as I said, show the strength of the North’s skateboarding. Manaus never had a Manauara who represented it in professional skateboarding with great evidence resulting from a skateboard based on regionalism and the pride of being from the region. Do you think you’re going to be this guy? BK: I’m working hard for this. In the history of Amazon skateboarding we have had several that were really good and that also tried, arriving to live in the Southeast, but did not manage to become professional. I am from a generation that seeks to professionalize, to represent the Amazon, but also with sponsors from my region. This is going to be the different point. But you’re always in São Paulo, even in Amazônida you have a picture there. Despite the independent scene is it important to be inside what happens in the great centers of the skate?

How is the skate scene in Manaus? BK: Today I see it is even stronger because of the video as well as local brands that are emerging and creating an awareness of independence. In Ma-

BK: I already lived in São Paulo for a while and it was very good for my growth, both for understanding the game and for the great friendships I made. As I go to São Paulo from time

I do not want to do this just in Manaus, so this year I’ve been to Pará and I’ve just returned from Boa Vista, Roraima, and I want to visit more states in our region, always building my work and identity based on our skateboarding. Now that I have good support this is possible.

Skateboarding in Manaus for me is life, that’s where my friends are and where my heart is. You are a guy known for your energy and persistence that makes you spend hours trying a difficult maneuver by ignoring the extreme the limits of your body. Where does this force come from? BK: Really, it comes from the skateboarding. Here everything is difficult so you have to have one more claw to appreciate the maneuver. Opportunities are rare here, I cannot pass them up. Also, I want to take this opportunity to thank the guys who are filming me, who enter the vibe of the maneuver with me roasting in the sun (laughs) and sometimes even in the rain. What should we still expect from Maikon Quaresma in 2017? BK: A lot of skateboarding and a lot of work in the pursuit of professionalism, traveling as much as I can, doing new projects with my sponsors and raising the flag of the North always! Many say that you are the greatest representative of Manauara skateboarding for being a warrior, facing
