Hughie O’Donoghue— Red Earth Reflecting on events, memories and the traces of evidence left to us from times past, O’ Donoghue uses his family history to connect with and understand the wars that have shaped our histories; and reflects on the personal experiences of his grandfather Hugh O’ Donoghue, a railway labourer and republican activist, during the First World War and his father, Daniel O’Donoghue, a conscripted soldier during the Second World War. From his richly constructed surfaces emerge fragments from the archive of his and our past, entwined with the disturbing resonance of war. Central to the exhibition is the sculpture A Distant Thunder, a reconstruction of a trench railway vehicle used to take injured men from the battlefields of World War I. The railway irons on which it runs carried the bodies of men from the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres. This work will be activated by a performance in the galleries at 3pm every day for the duration of the season. Hughie O’Donoghue is one of Ireland’s leading international artists. He was elected as a member of the Royal Academy, London in 2009 and to Aosdána in 2013. He has an honorary doctorate from University College Cork.

Stormy Petrel/Guairdeall
F Studio and Link Gallery Huong Ngo – Entrance space 31st October – 29th January 2017
Stormy Petrel/Guairdeall —Orla Ryan, Alanna O’Kelly, Brian Hand A collaboration by artists Orla Ryan, Alanna O’Kelly and Brian Hand exploring the symbolism of the Stormy Petrel, the world’s smallest seabird, as a metaphor for someone who is an avatar of change and who announces an oncoming storm. In 1916 the Stormy Petrel was an international symbol of revolution and the anticolonial imagination. The artists explore the role of women couriers who memorised the Proclamation on their journeys out of Dublin early on Easter Monday morning. The women became human telegraphs, the pressure of the despatch always with them. We rise at noon. Obey your orders. Telephone, scrap, glance. Once the rebellion had started, delivering the message and getting back to Dublin was not straightforward. Originally commissioned as part of the An Post GPO Witness History public art commissions for 2016 and then exhibited in The Vietnamese Women’s Museum in Hanoi, Stormy Petrel/ Guairdeall in VISUAL will take the form of a sculptural sound installation, publication, film and guest appearance of the work of Vietnamese American artist Huong Ngo. Kindly supported by the Institute of Technology, Carlow and Artlinks Ltd.

Tim Hetherington —Diary Tim Hetherington was a photojournalist, filmmaker, human rights advocate and artist, best known for his coverage of conflict in areas including Liberia, Afghanistan and Libya where he was killed in a mortar attack in April 2011. ’Diary’, made in collaboration with Magali Charrier, is an experimental non-narrative film that powerfully communicates his subjective experience and the duality of his existence between life in the West and life in conflict zones. It is accompanied by images from his time in Afghanistan in 2007–2008 documenting the American campaign in the Korengal Valley. Delving beneath the ‘hardware’ of war to capture the humanity and vulnerability of the soldiers, this work received the World Press Photo of the Year 2008 and led to the making of the documentary film Restrepo with Sebastian Junger, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2010. With thanks to the Tim Hetherington Trust, Stephen Mayes, Judith and Alistair Hetherington, Sebastian Junger and Goldcrest Films.
Associated Events Restrepo Saturday 12th November, 5.00pm, Free A feature-length documentary that chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soliders in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley. It focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, Restrepo, named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. Considered one of the most dangerous postings in the US military, this experiental film gives a birds-eye view of the realites of life and death on deployment.

Carlow Little Theatre Society presents
The Plough and the Stars by Sean O’Casey Set amid the tumult of the Easter Rising, The Plough and the Stars is the story of ordinary lives ripped apart by the idealism of the time. The residents of a Dublin tenement shelter from the violence that sweeps through the city’s streets. A revolution that will shape the country’s future rages around them. What kind of Ireland awaits them? When The Plough and the Stars was first performed at the Abbey Theatre in 1926 the audience rioted. Now regarded as a masterpiece, Sean O’Casey’s provocative play is an essential part of our understanding of 1916. Carlow Little Theatre Society return to VISUAL with their commemoration of the rising, some ten years after the society last performed the play and fifty years after they performed The Plough and the Stars on the 50th anniversary of the rising in 1966.

Striking Productions presents
Aladdin
Join us in a Bollywood-style pantomime this year when Striking Productions returns with their usual panache, fairy-tale innocence and show-stopping razzle dazzle. Following on from past sell-out shows, this year’s production is a riot of music, laughter, colourful sets and sparkling costumes. The magic-carpet ride is magical! The Cave of Wonders is wonderful! We enjoy the comedic presence of Widow Twankey, and Aladdin’s two sisters serve as a slapstick double act. The musical numbers are captivating, from the eye-popping opening number, “Arabian Nights” to “A Whole New World,” the enchanting romantic number that takes Aladdin and Princess Jasmine on their magic carpet ride. The newly written script features a female Genie known to her friends as Jeannie, who magically draws audiences into exotic Arabia and walks off with the show in “Friend Like Me,” a spectacular production number that is a bona fide showstopper. Come along on our adventure as we capture children’s imaginations and help to create magical family memories this Christmas.
