VISUAL present a major exhibition by Sean Lynch, Ireland’s representative at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Over the last decade, Lynch’s installations, sculptures and publications have explored the subjective layers of Irish history and offered alternative readings of the influences that shape our society today. The exhibition includes a new work commissioned by VISUAL and the Local Authorities Arts Office; For The Birds is based upon the medieval Irish myth of An Buile Suibhne, or the Frenzy of Sweeney. Cursed to be half-man, half-bird, Sweeney hopped throughout Ireland lamenting his woes in lyrical verse, until he reached a farmhouse in St. Mullins in Co. Carlow where he found a strange form of kindness – each evening he was invited to drink milk out of a bowl of cowdung. In collaboration with sculptor Tom Fitzgerald, Lynch reimagines this scene in the context of Carlow’s contemporary agricultural industry. Associated Events and Activities: Carlow Farmers Market pop-up Fri 19th Sept, 11.00am – 6.00pm, Free Come and celebrate the local farming harvest in VISUAL’s gallery spaces.

September – December 2014

Two Views of Carlow Two Views of Carlow features work by Carlow artists, Frank O’Meara (1853 – 1888) and contemporary painter Adam Bohanna. Although working in different times, both practices explore landscape as a medium that reflects place, identity and the ways in which we inhabit our environments. Frank O’Meara left Carlow for France in 1872. He became an influential figure within the Barbizon School, painting and sketching landscapes and rural life with a sympathetic realism. The influence of Carlow’s river and rural landscapes that he sketched as a young man can be seen in the work that he made at this time. Adam Bohanna’s paintings and drawings of Carlow present a contemporary viewpoint, framed by the influence of painters of landscape and life, such as O’Meara. Bohanna’s Carlow is one where similar vistas can be found but the ruins within the landscape are now of an industrial nature. Associated Events and Activities: A day-long outdoor drawing workshop with Adam Bohanna Sat 11th Oct, 11.00am – 4.00pm, €35 A day long en plein-air drawing workshop with Adam Bohanna – places limited, please book with Box Office. Living in a Coded Land (2014) A poetic and imaginative film essay that makes unexpected links between events and locations, history and contemporary life. The film revolves around the notion of a sense of place, reflecting on the traces of the past in the present and probing themes such as the impact of colonialism, emigration, the famine, land and housing, with extensive use of archive footage from RTÉ and the IFI. Screened as part of Encircling Worlds Conference (see page 20 for details).
Blood Rising (2012) In 2011 Brian Maguire presented the exhibition An Oasis of Horror in a Desert of Boredom in VISUAL, telling stories from Mexico of a culture of violence resulting in widespread murder of women. Blood Rising examines Maguire’s campaign to bring this to international attention and give a voice to the families of the women involved. The film is a celebration of the power of the human spirit to rise out of the most extreme and destructive situations, and the ability of art to describe such terrible beauty.
The Lunchbox (2013) Ila is trying to add some spice to her marriage through her cooking. Hoping that her new recipe will finally arouse a reaction from her husband, she prepares a special lunchbox to be delivered to him at work, but it is mistakenly delivered to Saajan, a lonely office worker. Curious about her husband’s lack of reaction, Ila puts a note in the following day's lunchbox, also mis-delivered. This begins an unexpected and transformative friendship that could end up jeopardising both their realities.

Al is one of the most sought after young comedians and MCs in the country. He’s been described as one of Dublin’s – if not Ireland’s – youngest, campest and most engaging comic performers. Alan’s comic talent has been described as “sharp” (Irish Times, 2011), “confident and articulate” (Irish Times, 2008), and “outrageous” (Irish Independent, 2012) – the last one is our favourite!
